Evaluating the structural capacity of concrete elements through in-situ instrumentation
(2013)
Byrne, David; Goggins, Jamie
Abstract:
The difficulty in predicting the long term load capacity of concrete elements is well documented. Time dependent effects such as creep and shrinkage coupled with varying loading events, particularly during construction, can all have an adverse effect on the long term performance of a concrete structure. This paper proposes a method that utilises in-situ instrumentation to predict the load carrying capacity of concrete members. During the construction of the Engineering building at the National University of Ireland, Galway over 260 sensors were embedded in a number of key concrete elements. The sensors are being continually monitored with the use of automatic datalogging equipment and the data is being used to monitor changes in geometric and material properties along with the subsequent time dependent deterioration of the elements. The paper will illustrate how the in-situ data from the demonstrator building can be used to estimate the real time behaviour of the concrete elements a...

Abstract:
The SSIX (Social Sentiment analysis financial IndeXes) project is a European Innovation Project sponsored by the European Commission under the Horizon 2020 framework. SSIX aims to provide European SMEs with a collection of easy to interpret tools to analyse and understand social media sentiment for any given topic regardless of locale or language. The United Kingdom’s recent referendum on European Union membership i.e. staying (“Bremain”) or leaving the EU (“Brexit”) was selected for the initial real-world test case for the validating the SSIX methodology and platform. In this paper, we describe the SSIX architecture in brief as well as analysis of the platforms X-Scores metrics and their application to Brexit, our initial experimental results and lessons learned.
This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 645425 and Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) under Grant Number SFI/12/RC/2289.

Abstract:

Energy provides safety, comfort and mobility to people, and is essential for industrial, commercial and societal growth. However, generation and consumption of energy give rise of greenhouse gases and various air pollutants, which have a negative impact on the natural environment and global climate. The building sector is responsible for about 40% of the energy consumption and related CO2 emissions worldwide. In order to reduce the environmental impact of buildings, energy efficient measures must be taken into account when designing, operating and retrofitting buildings. It is imperative that holistic consideration is given to the structural, environmental and energy aspects in buildings through their life. In order to maintain safe, healthy and comfortable sustainable buildings, assurance of the structural and environmental building performance must be given not only at the design, but also commissioning and operation stages of its life cycle. This paper presen...

Abstract:
We describe a case of symptomatic primary Cytomegalovirus infection in a HIV-positive pregnant woman on antiretroviral treatment with a CD4 count >200 × 10(6)/l requiring intravenous ganciclovir. No adverse consequences from ganciclovir or evidence of congenital Cytomegalovirus infection were found.

The impact of changes in educational attainment on life expectancy in Ireland
(2013)
FitzGerald, John; Byrne, David; Znuderl, Nusa
Abstract:
This article looks at scenarios quantifying the potential contribution of increasing educational attainment to the prospective improvement in life expectancy in Ireland over the next 50 years. This analysis uses recently published information for Ireland on life expectancy by level of education. This article also considers the implications of the new data on life expectancy for differences in death rates by level of education for different groups in the population today.
