Analyzing R&D Knowledge Flows In The Flat World
(2009)

Abstract:
Previous research has firmly established the importance of informal social networks in facilitating knowledge flows in research and development (R&D) settings. However, the explosion of Web technologies in recent years have ’flattened’ the planet and dramatically altered our understanding of what constitutes a social network. Despite this, current research has neglected to examine how Web technologies have impacted knowledge flows in R&D. To address this research gap, we revisit the highly influential technological gatekeeper theory. Drawing on social network analysis (SNA) and interview evidence from a medical devices R&D group, we find that the gatekeeper role is still vital, but no longer needs to be performed by a single individual. Instead, the modern R&D group can keep abreast of the latest technological advances through a combination of Web-enabled internal and external communication specialists. A unique contribution this paper makes to the IT-enabled social ...

Challenges for aided online shopping and product selection - a decision making perspective.
(2010)
Dabrowski, Maciej; Acton, Thomas; Golden, Willie
Abstract:
Consumers often face a task to select a best option from a large set of alternatives, such as choosing a car to buy1, an apartment to rent2, or an unforgettable trip to book3. E-commerce sites frequently provide the possibility to search for structured items, usually by asking a user to fill in a form asking about the requirements that a desired product has to satisfy (preferences). This process is used, for example, when searching for a used car, or a flight on popular websites, and is also referred to as preference- based search or parametric search. Although such choice-based approaches are prevalent, both users and retailers can find them unsatisfying. One of the major reasons is that users are often not able to correctly transform their preferences into requirements using online forms, and thus they are rarely provided with the information they need. On the other hand, consumers making purchase decisions in online shops are often unable to evaluate all available alternatives in...

Abstract:
InterTradeIreland All-Island Innovation Programme 2012 Annual Conference: Exploiting Industry and University Research, Development and Innovation: Why it Matters, Institute for Business, Social Sciences and Public Policy National University of Ireland, Galway, 12 - 13 June 2013
Agile methods are a recent but widely diffused innovation in Information Systems development (ISD). Agile methods call for the creation of organic, flexible and empowered teams who work in active and close collaboration with customers over a series of rapid development iterations. Agile methods can deliver productivity and quality gains by improving task prioritisation, design flexibility, and communication and coordination within and across teams. However, teams must overcome a range of obstacles if these advantages are to be realised. In particular, decision-making in agile settings is challenging, decentralised and pluralistic, frequent and short-term, dynamically complex (decisions are highly interrel...

Digitising the R&D social network: revisiting the technological gatekeeper
(2013)
Whelan, Eoin; Golden, Willie; Donnellan, Brian
Abstract:
This paper examines how the digitisation of the social network, and the resulting interplay between its online and offline components, has impacted the role of the technological gatekeeper in research and development (R&D) settings. Previous studies have firmly established the technological gatekeeper to be a key node in the innovation process – acquiring, translating and disseminating novel information throughout the R&D social network. Drawing on social network analysis and interview evidence from a software R&D group, we find that the gatekeeper role has undergone a division of labour. Theoretically, we contribute to the body of knowledge by developing an updated technological gatekeeper conceptual framework. For practitioners, we identify the competencies exhibited by the small number of communication specialists who are largely responsible for diffusing novel information. We then advise practitioners how to maximise the contribution of these ‘stars’ to the informati...

E-tailing in Ireland: a review of Ireland's top 25 retailers
(2011)
Hughes, Martin; Golden, Willie; Scott, Murray
Abstract:
Electronic commerce provides a new sales channel for traditional retailers (Gulati and Garino, 2000, Griffith and Krampf, 1998). Yet, many traditional retailers have been slow to embrace the new technology (Bellman, 2001, De-Kare Silver, 2000, Maruca, 1999). However, others 'Clicks & Bricks' retailers have successfully integrated physical operations with online stores (Enders and Jelassi, 2000, Willcocks and Plant, 2001). This paper assesses the current state of cyber retailing in Ireland and seeks to evaluate the impact electronic commerce has had on the retail sector. The top 25 Irish retail firms were identified and the web site (if existing) of these companies were then accessed and evaluated based on factors relating to web site functionality, technical sophistication and information provision. The research found the cyber retailing market in Ireland to be buoyant and growing. The high incidence of web presence amongst the top twenty-five ...

Abstract:
Modern enterprise technological landscapes are being impacted by the increasing individuation of information systems (IS). Consequently, the end-user computing phenomenon is being extended to incorporate a multitude of nascent possibilities for organizations. One promising avenue encompasses the use of business analytics. Common categories of enterprise intelligence analytics are traditionally derived from activity patterns and collaborative routines. In the scope of this paper we shall focus on another emergent category of analytics which we refer to as enterprise personal analytics which encompasses the concept of organisations enabling their employees to use their individual analytics to manage their digital working lives from descriptive, diagnostic, predictive and prescriptive points of view. This topic has been only minimally analysed in IS research. Furthermore, there have been increased calls by academics to investigate the individuation of IS which has largely gone unnoti...

Abstract:
Previous studies have firmly established the technological gatekeeper to be a key node in the innovation process – acquiring, translating, and disseminating external information throughout the R&D unit. However, the gatekeeper concept has received modest attention in recent times. We argue that the concept needs to be re-examined in light of the recent advances in Internet technologies that have dramatically altered how knowledge workers source and share their information. Drawing on social network analysis and interview evidence from a medical devices R&D group, we find that the gatekeeper role is still vital, but no longer needs to be performed by a single individual. Instead, the modern R&D group can keep abreast of the latest technological advances through a combination of Internet-enabled internal and external communication specialists. This study makes a number of important contributions. The gatekeeper theory is extended through the development of an updated conce...

Abstract:
2012 International Conference On Information Systems Development (ICIS 2012), Orlando, Florida, USA, 16 19 December 2012
The emergence and widespread adoption of agile methodologies is often explained by the need to improve time management in Information Systems Development (ISD). Indeed, a growing body of evidence supports the view that agile methodologies are an effective means of delivering productivity gains through time savings. That is to say, agile methodologies can be used to increase speed and efficiency in ISD projects. In addition, lightweight agile methodologies are designed, by definition, to minimise wastes in the design and delivery of Information Systems and can therefore be used to support sustainability in IS projects (cf. Schmidt et al., 2009). However, the impact of agile methodologies on ISD project outcomes is less clear. In addressing this question, this research-inprogress paper uses a combination of existing literature and empirical data to construct a c...

Linking threat avoidance and security adoption: a theoretical model For SMEs
(2018)
Browne, Sean; Lang, Michael; Golden, Willie
Abstract:
A deficiency exists in the Information Systems Security literature because of the tendency to regard IT threat avoidance and IT security adoption as separate behaviours. In addressing the deficiency this research in progress focuses on SMEs, for several reasons including their strategic importance globally, the current trend among cybercriminals to conduct more high volume, low risk attacks against weaker targets and also because of the individualistic behavioural patterns in SMEs. Drawing on several well-established behavioural theories, this paper synthesises elements of these theories into a holistic model, with coping theory placed firmly at is centre. This study will make several contributions to the field, initially creating an empirically validated model for behaviours surrounding both avoidance and preventative actions in small firms and also in presenting and prioritising a specific view of the external factors influencing how threats are appraised, assessed and dealt with.

Abstract:
There is growing evidence that organisations are increasingly using the concept of lean supply to foster innovation. This paper considers key factors that influence this management approach in the context of the cross-cultural transfer of both codified and tacit knowledge embedded in a manufacturing process. It reports current empirical research on a multi-national company American Power Conversion (APC)'s production line transfer from Galway, Ireland to Suzhou, P. R. China. It aims to explore the key factors influencing APC's lean manufacturing and knowledge transfer, and further provide a base-line from which pragmatic advice can be given to companies pursuing manufacturing or supply strategies. The research proposes to make a contribution on examining the key factors that influence the effective transfer of knowledge between two important countries in the global manufacturing landscape.
