Incorporating Smart Sensing Technologies into the Poultry Industry
(2013)

Abstract:
Increases in production input costs are driving innovation in the poultry industry in Ireland and worldwide. Integration of so called ‘Precision Livestock Farming’ techniques into the poultry industry supply chain will help producers to optimize management systems. This manuscript provides an overview of monitoring and performance sensor technologies within poultry production. It outlines traditional sensing methods and looks at the potential of novel performance related systems that could be incorporated into production facilities. Critical environmental parameters which are relevant to poultry production include inter alia air temperature, relative humidity, light, air speed and air quality (in particular CO 2 and NH 3 concentrations). Current industry practice with regard to the measurement of these parameters in addition of the effect of these parameters on bird welfare is reviewed, and improvements underpinned by novel technologies and processes are also investigated. Finally, ...

Maple and Shamrock: Seeking a Strategy for Survival in the Audiovisual Jungle
(2016)
Kenny, Colum
Abstract:
Attempting to assess what the future might hold for Irish broadcasters and producers, especially in the light of digital and multimedia developments and of increasing competition, I recently paid a visit to Ontario and Quebec, two adjacent provinces of Canada. It is a country where audiovisual matters have long been taken seriously. Canada's proximity to the U.S. 'elephant', as that neighbour is sometimes known, concentrates the northern state's collective mind on survival strategies. Previous trips to Canada, including attendance at the Toronto Film Festival and participation as a guest in the Banff Television Festival in Alberta, had induced in the author an admiration for the practical ways in which Canadians have responded to audiovisual challenges.

Abstract:
Computer Aided Process Engineering - CAPE Forum 2013, 2013
Increases in fuel and feed prices are placing a significant burden on the poultry industry in Ireland and worldwide. For producers to meet their financial targets, increased performance and output is a key issue, now more than ever. To optimise performance in broiler production houses, the effect of environmental and air quality parameters on bird performance and energy consumption must be known to allow farmers make informed management decisions. This paper concentrates on the application precision livestock farming sensors to develop recommendations for improved bird performance and energy consumption in broiler production farms in Ireland. Air temperature, relative humidity, light, air speed and air quality (in particular CO2 and NH3 concentrations) are identified as important parameters for improving bird performance and energy consumption in broiler production houses. Several of these parameters (temperature, re...

Significant Television: Journalism, Sex Abuse and the Catholic Church
(2009)

Abstract:
MOST CITIZENS OF THE Republic of Ireland describe themselves in their census returns as Roman Catholic, although attendances at church have been declining. Irish Catholics long endured religious discrimination and persecution under British Protestant rule. Partly for that reason, the Irish media tended to treat the Catholic Church very respectfully or deferentially after the foundation of the independent Irish Free State in 1921. However, by the closing decade of the twentieth century, Ireland had passed through a period of rapid and remarkable change. Economic, social and cultural factors made it more likely than before that Irish broadcasters would produce programmes critical of clergy and bishops. Irish Catholics still make a major contribution to social and educational services
