Abstract:
The study of sexual health among the population in Ireland is at a relatively early stage. Before the ISSHR survey, there was little understanding of the relationship between sexual knowledge, attitudes and behaviours (KAB). A number of groups and organisations – such as the National AIDS Strategy Committee, the Department of Health and Children (DoHC) and the Crisis Pregnancy Agency (CPA) – recognised this lack. As a result, a scoping study for a national survey of KAB issues was commissioned in autumn 2002. The scoping study, having consulted widely with stakeholders in the area of sexual health and education, made a number of recommendations for a national KAB survey for Ireland. On July 17th 2003, the CPA and the DoHC published a tender document which requested proposals for the first national sexual KAB survey. The primary aim of the project, as set out in the tender document, was the collection of reliable nationally representative baseline information that would: • build a re...

Abstract:
Objective: There has been an increased interest in the role of the childhood social environment in the etiology of adult diseases in recent years. The present study examines whether the experience of adversity during childhood increases risk for disease in later life independent of later life socioeconomic, behavioral, and psychosocial factors. Method: The study involved a nationally representative sample of 6,912 persons aged 50 years and older who were participating in the first wave of the Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing. Childhood adversity was indexed using a 4-item measure that captured challenging and potentially noxious childhood environmental exposures including, socioeconomic disadvantage, substance abuse among parents, physical abuse, and sexual abuse. A doctor diagnosis of disease across 9 chronic disease types represented the primary outcome variables. Results: The experience of adversity during childhood was associated with increased risk of disease in midlife and o...

Abstract:
BACKGROUND: The use of dietary quality scores/indices to describe diet quality in children has increased in the past decade. However, to date, few studies have focused on the use of these scores on disease outcomes such as childhood obesity and most are developed from detailed dietary assessments. Therefore, the aims of this study were: firstly to construct a diet quality score (DQS) from a brief dietary assessment tool; secondly to examine the association between diet quality and childhood overweight or obesity; thirdly we also aim to examine the associations between individual DQS components and childhood overweight or obesity. METHODS: A secondary analysis of cross sectional data of a sample of 8,568 9-year-old children and their families as part of the Growing Up in Ireland (GUI) study. Subjects were drawn from a probability proportionate to size sampling of primary schools throughout Ireland over the school year 2007–2008. Height and weight were measured by trained researchers ...

Unemployment, welfare benefits and the financial incentive to work

Abstract:
Although disincentive effects associated with payments have been regulaly found in research in the US and UK, the UK research is disputed and effects have been notable by their absence in studies from Continental Europe. However, much of this research has been hindered by inadequate models of the structure of payments and estimates of in work incomes. In this paper we explicitly model the structue of benefit payments over time and estimate in work income using the SWITCH tax/benefit model. We find that the hazard of exit from unemployment is negatively related to unemployment payments, but distinctive effects appear to influence only those receiving Unemployment Benefts (UB) and are small when compared internationally. Moreover, the exit rate increases for this group as exhaustion approaches at 15 months duration. We find no significant distinctive effects amongst those receiving Unemployment Assistance (UA).
