Between common and college knowledge: Exploring the boundaries between adult and higher education
(2000)
Fleming, Ted; Murphy, Mark
Abstract:
The debate about access to higher education in Ireland has been linked to the debate about educational equality and socio-economic disadvantage. Most of the discussion so far has centred on mechanisms for gaining entry to higher education institutions â establishing access and foundation courses, increasing numbers of non-traditional entrants, generating modular and credit-based programmes. The findings from research undertaken at both the National University of Ireland at Maynooth and Dublin, explored the experience of mature students returning to university. The findings indicate that questions of equality and disadvantage in the university are not only concerned with access, but also with accessibility â what happens to mature students when they arrive in college. This paper goes on to reconstruct the conflict between the common sense knowledge of the returning student and the college knowledge of the academy in a way that identifies a collaborative and democratic discourse a...

College Knowledge: Power, Policy and the Mature Student Experience of University
(2002)
Fleming, Ted; Murphy, Mark
Abstract:
The characteristics and experience of mature students at the National University of Ireland Maynooth were examined in a study in which data were collected from the following: detailed questionnaire mailed to all 298 mature students registered at NU1 Maynooth and returned by 164 (55%) of them; semistructured interviews with a sample of 20 individuals selected from the 164 respondents based on certain demographic characteristics; and 4 focus groups. Policy regarding national and international changes in higher education (HE) was reviewed along with the literature on financial issues affecting mature students in HE, mature students' relationships and external commitments, and the learning process. The typical mature student was young, single, and childless. Although finance was not the most crucial issue for the respondents, it always lay close to the surface. The main motivations cited for entering the university were to obtain a qualification that would jump-start their careers...

Leadership the Key Ingredient: an Overview of an Exploration Study of the Issues Surrounding Implementation of Culinary Tourism Strategy on the Dingle Peninsula
(2012)
Murphy, Mark
Abstract:
This paper presents an overview of the author’s research thesis which was part of a M.Sc. in Culinary Innovation and New Food Product Development in D.I.T. The research paper explored the issues surrounding implementing a culinary tourism strategy on the Dingle Peninsula in County Kerry. The Dingle Peninsula has been selected by Ireland’s national tourism development agency (Fáilte Ireland) as a region with potential to become a leading food destination. The research methods consisted of a wide review of literature relevant to the field of culinary tourism. In addition, qualitative research methods including semi-structured interviews of tourism stakeholders on the Dingle Peninsula and through the collection of data from observation were employed. The findings of this research study illustrates that there is potential for culinary tourism on the Dingle Peninsula and that the stakeholders are aware of the impact this would have on the region, while accepting that several challenges a...

Partners in Participation: integrated approaches to widening access in higher education
(2003)
Fleming, Ted; Murphy, Mark
Abstract:
Detailed in this article are two case studies carried out over the last two years in the UK and Ireland which embody the objectives of tackling social exclusion and widening access to education via a partnership and integrated approach. One was completed as part of a Scottish Executive-funded study on widening participation in HE, and the other was funded by Integra and carried out in Ireland. The aim of outlining the findings of these case studies is to shed some light on the usefulness of the partnership approach to widening access. Whilst such an approach sounds eminently reasonable on paper, particularly the focus on de-centralisation, integrated services and grassroots development, in classic policy research terms, does the rhetoric match up with the reality? Do partnership-based out-reach programmes reach the parts other less innovative initiatives cannot?

Abstract:
Background: Termination of pregnancy (ToP) is currently illegal in Ireland. In 2010, more than 4000 women travelled from Ireland to the UK for a ToP. Objectives: The aims of this study were to assess the attitudes and clinical experiences of Irish General Practitioners (GPs) and GPs-in-training (GPRs) towards ToP. Methods: A postal survey was sent to 500 GPs in Ireland. An internet-based survey was sent to 244 GPRs. Quantitative and qualitative analysis was performed. Results: Overall response was 44%. Four groups of doctor's opinions could be identified: (A) abortion can never be allowed (10%); (B) abortion can be allowed in limited circumstances (25%); (C) abortion should be available to all women (51%); and (D) no definite opinion (14%). Doctors in groups (A) and (B) were older and more often Catholic. Of doctors in group (C), 66% indicated an upper gestational limit of maximum 16 weeks. More than 40% of all respondents had at least one consultation specifically dealing with...
