Abstract:
Drawing on the experiences and context of others who have already used a particular resource can greatly facili- tate that resource?s reuse. Such reuse is essential when the resources in question are digital learning assets, services and models which are expensive both in terms of time and monetary expenditure to develop and use. When these re- sources are deployed in personalised settings, where each user may be delivered a tailored sequence of resources that uniquely suits their particular needs, gathering and feder- ating a rich view of how these resources are being used be- comes important. In this article we describe an approach to facilitating the federating of contextual usage data, which is compiled over the lifecycle of a resource. Given that this data is likely to come from a range of different sources, our approach will need to be able to cope with the high level of heterogeneity expected in terms of its structure, syntax and semantics. We describe how such data may be us...

Abstract:
The majority of studies in Personalized Information Retrieval (PIR) literature have focused on monolingual IR, and only relatively little work has been done concerning multilingual IR. In this paper we propose a novel method to represent user models in a multilingual fashion. We argue that such representation would be more suitable for Personalized Multilingual Information Retrieval (PMIR). Furthermore, we outline two algorithms for query adaptation based on user information from the multilingual user model.

Personalised Learning for Casual Games: The 'Language Trap' Online Language Learning Game
(2010)

Abstract:
The features of video games that contribute to effective learning are drawing increasing attention in the world of technology enhanced learning. To date, game based learning has focussed on the learning benefits provided by the inherent motivation, rich visualizations, and low risk of failure, provided by contemporary educational games. Although these advantages create highly engaging and immersive learning environments, there remain additional techniques that can further aid the learning process. The integration of personalisation into educational games presents unique challenges, the most important being the preservation of the gaming experience. In consideration that a well designed educational game can seamlessly blend learning and gaming content, any adaptation of the learning content will ultimately affect the gaming experience. In effect all educational adaptations must be achieved in a manner that is non-invasive to the game play. In this paper we introduce the `Language Tra...

Abstract:
A key driver for next generation web information retrieval systems is becoming the degree to which a user?s search and presentation experience is adapted to individual user properties and contexts of use. Over the past decades, two parallel threads of personalisation research have emerged, one originating in the document space in the area of Personalised Information Retrieval (PIR) and the other arising from the hypertext space in the field of Adaptive Hypermedia (AH). PIR typically aims to bias search results towards more personally relevant information by modifying traditional document ranking algorithms. Such techniques tend to represent users with simplified personas (often based on historic interests), enabling the efficient calculation of personalised ranked lists. On the other hand, the field of Adaptive Hypermedia (AH) has addressed the challenge of biasing content retrieval and presentation by adapting towards multiple characteristics. These characteristics, more typically...

Abstract:
peer-reviewed
Ubiquitous computing environments have the potential to provide rich sources of information about a user and their surroundings. However, the nature of context information means that it must be gathered in an ad-hoc and distributed manner with many devices and sensors storing potentially relevant data. In an ad-hoc ubiquitous computing environment, retrieval of context information cannot rely on a fixed meta-data schema. This works shows how an ontology driven context service architecture may perform distributed open schema queries over heterogeneous context sources in a potentially decentralised manner.

Abstract:
A key impediment for enabling the mainstream adoption of Adaptive Hypermedia for web applications and corporate websites is the di#30;culty in repurposing existing content for such delivery systems. This paper proposes a novel framework for open-corpus content preparation, making it usable for adaptive hypermedia systems. The proposed frame- work processes documents drawn from both open (i.e. web) and closed corpora, producing coherent conceptual sections of text with associated descriptive metadata. The solution bridges the gap between information resources and information requirements of adaptive systems by adopting state-of-the-art information extraction and structural content analysis techniques. The result is an on-demand provision of tailored, atomic in- formation objects called #16;slices#17;. The challenges associated with open corpus content reusability are addressed with the aim of improving the scalability and interoperability of adaptive systems. This paper proposes an i...

A Late Fusion Approach to Cross-Lingual Document Re-ranking
(2010)

Abstract:
The field of information retrieval still strives to develop models which allow semantic information to be integrated in the ranking process to improve performance in comparison to standard bag- of-words based models. Cross-lingual information retrieval is an example of where such a model is required, as content or concepts often need to be matched across languages. To overcome this problem, a conceptual model has been adopted in ranking an entire corpus which normally exploits latent/implicit features of the text. One of the drawbacks of this model is that the computational cost is significant and often intractable in modern test collections. Therefore, approaches utilizing concept- based models for re-ranking initial retrieval results have attracted a considerable amount of study, in particular the latent concept model. However, fitting such a model to a smaller collection is less meaningful than fitting it into the whole corpus. This paper proposes a late fusion method which incor...

Abstract:
A key advantage of Adaptive Hypermedia Systems (AHS) is their ability to re-sequence and reintegrate content to satisfy a particular user?s need, context or requirements. However, this requires large volumes of content, with appropriate granularities and suitable meta-data descriptions, representing a major impediment to the mainstream adoption of Adaptive Hypermedia. Open- corpus content is now widely available on the web, however, traditional information retrieval (IR) approaches are an inadequate means of incorporating these external content resources within AHS. This is due to the ?one size fits all? content delivery paradigm offered by traditional IR. Slicing technology addresses these limitations by providing adaptive retrieval of open corpus resources, tailored to suit AHS specific content requirements. This is achieved through the on demand provision of tailored content called slices. This paper introduces slicing systems and details the objectives and challenges involved in...

A unified approach to adaptive hypermedia personalisation and adaptive service composition
(2006)

Abstract:
Adaptive Hypermedia is utilised in several domains, such as eLearning and professional training, where there is a growing movement towards the use of cognitively richer and more `active? approaches to user engagement. In order to support this move, it is vital that adaptive personalisation systems, in these domains, are capable of integrating adaptively composed activities into adaptively personalised content compositions [1]. Through the integration of the approaches that are used in the automated composition of web services with those found in Adaptive Hypermedia, we believe that it will be possible to support a unified approach to the adaptation of content and services through the leveraging of the characteristics that are common to both adaptive application domains.

Automatic Metadata Extraction from Multilingual Enterprise Content
(2010)
WADE, VINCENT PATRICK; SAH, MELIKE
Abstract:
Enterprises provide professionally authored content about their products/services in different languages for use in web sites and customer care. For customer care, personalization/personalized information delivery is becoming important since it re-encourages users to return to the service provider. Personalization usually requires both contextual and descriptive metadata. But current metadata authored by content developers is usually quite simple. In this paper, we introduce an automatic metadata extraction framework, which can extract multilingual metadata from the enterprise content, for a personalized information retrieval system. We introduce two new ontologies for metadata creation and a novel semi-automatic topic vocabulary extraction algorithm. We demonstrate and evaluate our approach on the English and German Symantec Norton 360 technical content. Evaluations indicate that the proposed approach produces rich and high quality metadata for a personalized information retrieval ...

Adaptive Retrieval and Composition of Socio-Semantic Content for Personalised Customer Care
(2010)
WADE, VINCENT PATRICK; STEICHEN, BEN
Abstract:
The parallel rise of the Semantic and Social Web provides unprecedented possibilities for the development of novel search system architectures. However, many traditional search systems have so far followed a simple one-size-fits-all paradigm by ignoring the different user information needs, preferences and intentions. In the last number of years, we have begun to see initial evidence that personalisation may be applied within web search engines, however little detail has been published other than adaptation based on user histories. Moreover, current implementations often fail to combine the mutual benefits of both structured and unstructured information resources. This paper presents techniques and architectures for leveraging socio-semantic content and adaptively retrieving and composing such content in order to provide personalised result presentations. The system is presented in a customer care scenario, which provides an application area for personalisation in terms of availab...

Abstract:
The evaluation of adaptive and personalised systems is a difficult, complicated and very demanding endeavour due to the complex nature of these systems and the usability issues encountered. This demonstration introduces a web-based framework to support the evaluation of end-user experience in adaptive and personalised systems. This framework has been developed based upon advice from domain experts and a review of evaluation approaches, methodologies and techniques adopted by existing adaptive systems. The benefits of the framework include: i) the provision of an interactive reference and recommendation tool to encourage the evaluation of adaptive systems; ii) the collaborative nature of the framework facilitates the sharing of evaluation information among researchers from diverse communities; iii) the identification of pitfalls in the planning process as well as in data analysis; and iv) the translation of presented information into users language of choice.

Abstract:
Legacy information systems typically form the backbone of the information flow within an organisation and are the main vehicle for consolidating information about the business. These systems also pose considerable problems - brittleness, inflexibility, isolation, nonextensibility, lack of openness etc -, the so called legacy system problem which opens up a new research topic, legacy system migration. This paper provides a brief review of the main issues involved in legacy information systems migration.

Applying Digital Content Management to Support Localisation
(2010)

Abstract:
The retrieval and presentation of digital content such as that on the World Wide Web (WWW) is a substantial area of research. While recent years have seen huge expansion in the size of web-based archives that can be searched efficiently by commercial search engines, the presentation of potentially relevant content is still limited to ranked document lists represented by simple text snippets or image keyframe surrogates. There is expanding interest in techniques to personalise the presentation of content to improve the richness and effectiveness of the user experience. One of the most significant challenges to achieving this is the increasingly multilingual nature of this data, and the need to provide suitably localised responses to users based on this content. The Digital Content Management (DCM) track of the Centre for Next Generation Localisation (CNGL) is seeking to develop technologies to support advanced personalised access and presentation of information by combining elements ...

Abstract:
peer-reviewed
Telecommunication management network (TMN) systems represent diverse telecommunication domains with wideranging functionality which frequently employ different technologies and produce isolated solutions. Yet as telecommunications become more sophisticated, there is a growing need for telecommunication management integration and interoperability. The paper presents a general TMN computing-platform architecture which is flexible and powerful enough to support contrasting TMN management applications while facilitating integration. To validate the architecture, three diverse management applications were profiled based on components of the TMN platform architecture. Core infrastructure components, required by a broad range of TMN applications, are identified and examined and TMNspecific technology is highlighted.

Abstract:
This book chapter reviews some of the challenges encountered by educators in creating personalised e-learning activities to suit students learning preferences. Technology-enhanced learning (TEL) alternatively known as e-learning has not yet reached its full potential in higher education. There are still many potential uses as yet undiscovered and other discovered uses which are not yet realisable by many educators. TEL is still predominantly used for e-dissemination and e-administration. This chapter reviews the potential use of TEL to provide personalised learning activities to suit individual students learning preferences. In particular the challenges encountered by educators when trying to implement personalised learning activities based on individual students learning preferences.

Abstract:
Efficiently locating learning content and web services for adaptive and personalized online courses is a demanding research area. This paper identifies the key challenges that need to be addressed. An approach is then presented that empowers educators to locate relevant learning resources and services through domain expertise and semantics that are meaningful to them. This approach utilizes the existing SARA, SABer and Adaptive Engine systems, in order to support an application that educators can effectively engage with to form adaptive courses. A compelling case study in the Technology Enhanced Learning domain is detailed, as well as an overview of the architecture that the AMAS project uses for supporting such a scenario.

Abstract:
peer-reviewed
Adaptive Hypermedia Systems have mechanisms for extensively modelling their domain of expertise, and reasoning over that domain to produce tailored web content. In general, these systems are supplied in advance with deep, explicit models of the relevant axes of adaptivity. Current designs in Adaptive Hypermedia therefore attempt to model the entire sphere of experience of the system deeply and without separation. Contextual input, on the other hand, is arbitrarily defined, and deep models are not separated from `shallow interest? contextual data. It is desirable to model this data separately so as to reduce the size of AH models and to encapsulate low-level sensor data as high-level interpreted concepts. This paper presents a novel method for applying contextual information to an Adaptive Hypermedia eLearning system, providing a clear boundary between `core? adaptive axes and contextual information. An outline of the architecture of an integrated Context Interpreta...
