A framework for customizing public services
(2011)
Haque, Rafiqul; Richardson, Ita; Whelan, Eoin; Taher, Yehia; Van den Heuvel, Willem-Jan; Tawbi, Samar
Abstract:
Processes are the main constituents of public services and as such demand correct and complete execution. Increasingly however, governments feel the pressuring need to deliver public services more quickly and personalized to the needs of local communities or citizens. This not only jeopardizes their quality but also requires them to form teams that combine deep technical and programming knowledge with business experts. It is the aim of this research project to deliver a framework that allows non IT-experts to customize prefabricated and generic processes by parameterizing them. This customization revolves around reference guidelines that accommodate multiple-viewpoints in a consistent manner.

A multi-layer approach for customizing business services
(2011)

Abstract:
The reusability of services is a cornerstone of the Service-Oriented Architecture design paradigm as it leads to a reduction in the costs associated with software development, integration and maintenance. However, reusability is difficult to achieve in practice as services are either too generic or over-specified for the tasks they are required to complete. This paper presents our work in defining an approach for achieving service reusability in Service-Based Applications (SBAs) by decomposing the reusability requirements into two layers and then into separate views that allow the customization of business policies, quality of service, tasks and control (i.e., orchestration/choreography) parameters. The objective of defining such an approach is to provide an appropriate solution that will guide the customization of a service’s functional and non-functional properties to allow it to be reused in different business contexts.

Abstract:
Twitter is the latest social networking tool said to be reshaping political presidential campaigns. In order to maximize the influence of their messages to voters, presidential nominees often use various techniques to transmit their campaign messages in the most effective way to the electorate. However, there is little scholarship on the use of Twitter as a strategic tool for presidential political campaigns. Using a nuanced magical realism theoretical perspective, this paper seeks to fill this gap through a content analysis of several of the presidential campaign nominees tweets, Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton and Jill Stein, in the six months leading up to election day on November 8th, 2016. Consequently, this study provides a methodological contribution pertaining to the utilization of magical realism to understand how Twitter is shaping the new political landscape. Furthermore, it provides an illustration of the application of specific techniques which underpin the magical realis...

Analyzing R&D Knowledge Flows In The Flat World
(2009)
Whelan, Eoin; Donnellan, Brian; Golden, Willie
Abstract:
Previous research has firmly established the importance of informal social networks in facilitating knowledge flows in research and development (R&D) settings. However, the explosion of Web technologies in recent years have ’flattened’ the planet and dramatically altered our understanding of what constitutes a social network. Despite this, current research has neglected to examine how Web technologies have impacted knowledge flows in R&D. To address this research gap, we revisit the highly influential technological gatekeeper theory. Drawing on social network analysis (SNA) and interview evidence from a medical devices R&D group, we find that the gatekeeper role is still vital, but no longer needs to be performed by a single individual. Instead, the modern R&D group can keep abreast of the latest technological advances through a combination of Web-enabled internal and external communication specialists. A unique contribution this paper makes to the IT-enabled social ...

Applying social network analysis to discover service innovation within agile service networks
(2010)
Carroll, Noel; Whelan, Eoin; Richardson, Ita
Abstract:
The literature indicates that there is urgent need to address the significant gap in our ability to value the contributory interaction of service networks in organisational performance. This paper is primarily concerned with exploring how service (re)configuration is utilised to optimise network performance. The paper will summarise the literature review over the past year in the quest to document how we can understand the contributory value of service innovation networks. It identifies some interesting overlaps in business process management, service science, and network innovation literature. This paper will discuss how failing to account for the value of service networks inhibits our capability to discover and monitor service performance and how this complements the evolvement of service science. This prevents managers from transforming information on network activity and infrastructural capabilities into strategic knowledge. This paper demonstrates how social network analysis (S...

Applying social network analysis to monitor web-enabled business processes
(2010)
Carroll, Noel; Richardson, Ita; Whelan, Eoin
Abstract:
The unprecedented growth in service-based business processes over a short period of time has underscored the need for understanding the mechanisms and theorising the business models and business process management adopted across many organisations today. This is more evident within the Irish health sector. This research summarises a survey of the literature and argues that the inability of current Business Process Management (BPM) techniques to visualise and monitor web-enabled business processes prevents us from transforming information on network activity and infrastructures. Thus, this research sets out to propose the need to develop a framework to enhance manager's ability to monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) while improving business process restructuring practices.

Abstract:
Research suggests University students are more disposed than others to develop problematic social media use. Social media overload, the phenomenon where users are exposed to a massive amount of information and communication demands via social media that may require energy and cognitive processing beyond their capabilities, is the specific problem under investigation in this paper. Combining qualitative data with the situation organism behavior-consequence paradigm, we develop a research model of the etiology of social media overload and its consequences for student performance in higher education. Using SEM-PLS techniques to analyze survey data from 182 students revealed a fear of missing out (the situation) is associated with feelings of overload (the organism), which in turn is linked to deficient self-regulation (the behavior) and ultimately reduced performance (the consequence). Our study advances the understanding of problematic social media use among students by demonstrating ...

Digitising the R&D social network: revisiting the technological gatekeeper
(2013)
Whelan, Eoin; Golden, Willie; Donnellan, Brian
Abstract:
This paper examines how the digitisation of the social network, and the resulting interplay between its online and offline components, has impacted the role of the technological gatekeeper in research and development (R&D) settings. Previous studies have firmly established the technological gatekeeper to be a key node in the innovation process – acquiring, translating and disseminating novel information throughout the R&D social network. Drawing on social network analysis and interview evidence from a software R&D group, we find that the gatekeeper role has undergone a division of labour. Theoretically, we contribute to the body of knowledge by developing an updated technological gatekeeper conceptual framework. For practitioners, we identify the competencies exhibited by the small number of communication specialists who are largely responsible for diffusing novel information. We then advise practitioners how to maximise the contribution of these ‘stars’ to the informati...

Does a social media abstinence really reduce stress? A research-in-progress study using salivary biomarkers
(2020)
Whelan, Eoin
Abstract:
There is much scientific evidence in recent years indicating that our ‘always on’ culture powered by platforms such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, Twitter, and WhatsApp, is leading to negative health outcomes, particularly stress. To mitigate social media induced stress, people are being advised to abstain from using social media for a period of time. However, the effectiveness of such breaks is open to question. As many people are heavily dependent on social media, the inability to access these platforms for a period of time could actually create stress and anxiety. To determine if and how social media abstinence relates to stress, this project will investigate the role of passion as a mediating variable. Stress will be measured using a combination of the salivary biomarkers cortisol and alpha amylase, with psychological scales. Ultimately, this study aims to determine the boundary conditions under which an abstinence from social media use will either increase or decrease stress...

Abstract:
Purpose This paper investigates the moderating role of multitasking computer self-efficacy on the relationship between social media affordances and social media overload as well as its moderation between social media overload and social media fatigue. Design/methodology/approach The authors hypothesize that social media affordances will have a positive impact on social media overload (i.e. information and communication overload). They also hypothesize that social media overload will affect social media fatigue. In addition, they hypothesize that multitasking computer self-efficacy will attenuate the effect of social media affordances on both information overload and communication overload. Similarly, they also hypothesize that multitasking computer self-efficacy will attenuate the effects of both information overload and communication overload on fatigue. The authors test this model by collecting two-wave data from 220 professionals using PLS techniques. Findings Social media affo...

Abstract:
Many individuals are passionate for physical activity such as cycling, running, and soccer. Drawing from the dualistic model of passion, the purpose of the present study was to examine the direct and indirect relationships between passion (harmonious and obsessive) for physical activity, life satisfaction, performance, and innovativeness in organisational settings. Survey data were gathered from 272 cyclists who also occupied employment roles beyond their cycling pursuits. Data were analysed using structural equation modelling. Results indicated a direct positive relationship between harmonious passion and both performance and innovativeness at work. Moreover, results indicated that perceived life satisfaction indirectly influenced the relationships between harmonious passion and both performance and innovativeness at work. No significant relationships were found between obsessive passion for cycling and either organisational performance outcome. In sum, these findings suggest that ...

Abstract:
Modern enterprise technological landscapes are being impacted by the increasing individuation of information systems (IS). Consequently, the end-user computing phenomenon is being extended to incorporate a multitude of nascent possibilities for organizations. One promising avenue encompasses the use of business analytics. Common categories of enterprise intelligence analytics are traditionally derived from activity patterns and collaborative routines. In the scope of this paper we shall focus on another emergent category of analytics which we refer to as enterprise personal analytics which encompasses the concept of organisations enabling their employees to use their individual analytics to manage their digital working lives from descriptive, diagnostic, predictive and prescriptive points of view. This topic has been only minimally analysed in IS research. Furthermore, there have been increased calls by academics to investigate the individuation of IS which has largely gone unnoti...

Examining the Antecedents to Innovation in Electronic Networks of Practice
(2007)
Whelan, Eoin; Donnellan, Brian; Costello, Gabriel J.
Abstract:
The way in which firms innovate ideas and bring them to market is undergoing a fundamental change. Useful knowledge is increasingly dispersed outside the firm’s boundaries and the exceptionally fast time to market for many products and services suggest that some very different organising principles for innovation are needed. These developments have led to an increased interest in the electronic network of practice concept to facilitate innovation. This paper argues that innovative behaviour in electronic networks of practice is determined by three interacting systems — individual motivations, network communication structure, and the social context of the network. The theoretical position of the interactive process theory of innovation is used to support this claim.

Abstract:
The study of social networks has attracted much interest from the IS community in recent years, driven mainly by the accessibility of trace data that remain as a by-product of interactions conducted through technology-enabled platforms. Despite its rapidly growing influence, we have some concerns about the current trajectory of social network research in the IS field. Our purpose in this commentary piece is to accentuate for the new generation of social network researchers, who are au fait with mathematical techniques for analyzing massive digital datasets, how the combination of quantitative and qualitative approaches can enrich our understanding of networks. First we highlight how the social network perspective has contributed to our understanding of IS phenomena. Next we review mixed methods research in IS social network research. An agenda for future IS social network research is then presented where we suggest how qualitative approaches can best complement trace data in address...

Exploring the implications of IT-enabled relational structures on service performance.
(2011)
Carroll, Noel; Whelan, Eoin; Richardson, Ita
Abstract:
Overview: The design, management and delivery of complex service systems suggest that we must develop a scientific understanding regarding the configuration of resources to deliver service excellence. In order to ground an understanding on service delivery, there is a need to establish a theory on service formation within complex service systems to examine the value propositions which connects them. Within the service-dominant environment, organisations are faced with increasing challenges to develop their capabilities in complex service models. This is not just a phenomenon experienced within the private sector alone since the public sector continues to come under scrutiny with its level of expenditure (‘the public purse’) on implementing innovative applications of technology to improve service delivery. However, although the emerging paradigm of ‘service science’ calls for more theoretical focus on understanding complex service systems, few efforts have surfaced which apply a new ...

Previous studies have firmly established the technological gatekeeper to be a key node in the innovation process – acquiring, translating, and disseminating external information throughout the R&D unit. However, the gatekeeper concept has received modest attention in recent times. We argue that the concept needs to be re-examined in light of the recent advances in Internet technologies that have dramatically altered how knowledge workers source and share their information. Abstract:
With its increasing power and sophistication, IT plays a central role in accelerating the innovation process. As such, almost every industry today is spending billions of dollars in the race to unleash the potential of digital technologies.Yet,many companies are failing to harness their IT capabilities for innovation because of the poor relationship often existing between theirIT division and other business units. To aid in overcoming this problem, we present the innovation and IT posture framework. The framework identifies the four different levels of posture IT divisions typically adopt in enterprisesand the various stages of maturity in each posture. Our key message is that fertile ground for IT-driven innovation will only emerge when the IT posture aligns with what the rest of the enterprise expects.Based on our research and consulting work, we also offer five key lessons that will enable CIOs and innov...

Abstract:
Purpose While the positive health benefits of fitness apps, which motivate and track physical exercise, are widely acknowledged, the adverse connection between these technologies and wellbeing has received little attention. The purpose of this paper is to determine how the social dimensions of fitness apps predict the type of passion (harmonious and obsessive) one has for physical exercise, and what the resulting positive and negative implications are for wellbeing. Design/methodology/approach Drawing from the theoretical frameworks of social influence and the dual model of passion (DMP), this study develops a model depicting how fitness apps relate to the causes and consequences of harmonious and obsessive passion for exercise. Survey data were collected from 272 fitness app using cyclists and analysed with partial least squares structural equation modelling techniques. Findings Different social influence aspects of fitness apps appeal to different types of exercisers. A harmonio...

Abstract:
The drive for openness in government, with open data as a key component, has seen governments around the world devote a large amount of resources to publishing government collected and held data. Scarce resources are being devoted to this goal with the primary goals designated as economic growth and increased innovation. A somewhat overlooked aim is the creation of public value which can be deployed as an openness and trust enhancing apparatus. This preliminary work addresses this gap by aiming to develop the core knowledge of how public value can be co-created with open data. Through an extensive survey of the relevant literature, this research seeks to build an initial framework of public value as applied to co-created open data. Grounded in the structured literature review technique, the authors surveyed the pertinent literature to identify the primary factors that enable value co-creation from the citizens point of view. Furthermore, this research proposes an adapted collection ...

Abstract:
Purpose Social media overload and fatigue have become common phenomena that are negatively affecting people's well-being and productivity. It is, therefore, important to understand the causes of social media overload and fatigue. One of the reasons why many people engage with social media is to avoid boredom. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to investigate how boredom proneness relates to social media overload and fatigue. Design/methodology/approach Building on the stress–strain–outcome framework, this paper tests a model hypothesizing the relationships between a social media user's boredom proneness, information and communication overload, and social media fatigue. The study tests the model by collecting data from 286 social media users. Findings The results suggest a strong association between boredom proneness and both information and communication overload, which, in turn, are strongly associated with social media fatigue. In addition, social media usage was found...

Knowledge Exchange in Electronic Networks of Practice; Towards a Conceptual Framework
(2012)
Whelan, Eoin
Abstract:
The recently developed knowledge-based view of the firm argues that knowledge is the firm's most valuable resource. Within this field of study, informal social networks are rapidly gaining attention as mechanisms which facilitate knowledge flows. Electronic networks of practice are a special case of informal networks where the sharing of practice related knowledge occurs primarily through computer-based communication technologies. However, we know relatively little about the dynamics of knowledge exchange which occur in these electronic networks. This paper posits that there is a relationship between the structural properties of electronic networks of practice and successful knowledge exchange. The theoretical positions of social network theory and the knowledge-based view of the firm are used to support this claim.
