'Letting go of control' to embrace open source : implications for company and community
(2010)
Shaikh, Maha; Cornford, Tony
Abstract:
It is increasingly understood across the information technology and services sector that engagement with the open source software model can serve as a means for firms to capture intellectual energy, learn about productive software processes, access relevant technical skills, identify and recruit staff, as well as obtain valuable resources including code. This paper reports a study undertaken within two large global IT companies that have been actively involved with open source for more than ten years. The study involved over 30 semi-structured interviews with employees of the companies drawn from top, middle, and lower level management, and included active and experienced developer as well as open source community members. Our findings indicate how these companies have adapted their day-to-day management practices to take into account the need for flexibility and freedom expected by open source communities. This paper focuses on how they ‘let go of control’ and what the implication...

'Loosely-coupled' consistency between agent-oriented conceptual models and Z specifications
(2005)
Krishna, Aneesh; Ghose, Aditya K.; Vilkomir, Sergiy A.
Abstract:
Agent-oriented conceptual modelling (AOCM) is a relatively new technique that offers significant benefits in the modelling and development of complex computer systems. It is highly effective in answering questions such that what are the main goals of the system, how key actors depend on each other, and what alternatives exist. A formal method can benefit any stage of the software development lifecycle and improves the quality of the computer systems. The paper defines an approach that allows to complement requirements modelling notations with formal specifications, while preserving the consistency between them.

"Crisis" or Wonderland: an appraisal of hypermedia systems development practice
(2004)
Lang, Michael
Abstract:
With the advent and growth of the Web, hypermedia information systems have propagated within and beyond organisations. Much concern has been expressed about the quality of hypermedia systems being developed and the apparent absence of disciplined development practices. There has been talk that the infamous “software crisis” is afflicting hypermedia systems development, allegedly characterised by shoddy project management, inadequate requirements analysis and planning, and ad hoc “quick and dirty” development approaches. This paper reports on the findings of a survey of 438 organisations in Ireland, the objectives of which were to test the validity of assertions of a “hypermedia crisis”, and to explore what mechanisms if any are being used to guide and control hypermedia systems development. The preliminary conclusions are that hypermedia development is much more disciplined than popularly believed, and the state of practice is much healthier than depicted by many academic researchers.

Abstract:
Security of software systems is of general concern, yet breaches caused by common vulnerabilities still occur. Software developers are routinely called upon to ”do more” to address this situation. However there has been little focus on the developers’ point of view, and understanding how security features in their day-to-day activities. This paper reports preliminary findings of semi-structured interviews taken during an ethnographic study of professional software developers in one organization who are not security experts. The overall study aims to understand how security features in day-to-day practice, while analysis of the interview data asks whether developers are responsible for security. The study reveals that awareness around security matters is raised through several paths including processes, standards, practices and company training and that a focus on security is driven by contextual factors. Security is taken care of with policies and through safeguards, and is handled ...

"In situ" hard mask materials: a new methodology for creation of vertical silicon nanopillar and nanowire arrays
(2012)
Ghoshal, Tandra; Senthamaraikannan, Ramsankar; Shaw, Matthew T.; Holmes, Justin D.; Morris, Michael A.
Abstract:
A novel, simple and in situ hard mask technology that can be used to develop high aspect ratio silicon nanopillar and nanowire features on a substrate surface is demonstrated. The technique combines a block copolymer inclusion method that generates nanodot arrays on substrate and an inductively coupled plasma (ICP) etch processing step to fabricate Si nanopillar and nanowire arrays. Iron oxide was found to be an excellent resistant mask over silicon under the selected etching conditions. Features of a very high aspect ratio can be created by this method. The nanopillars have uniform diameter and smooth sidewalls throughout their entire length. The diameter (15–27 nm) and length of the nanopillars can be tuned easily. Different spectroscopic and microscopic techniques were used to examine the morphology and size, surface composition and crystallinity of the resultant patterns. The methodology developed may have important technological applications and provide an inexpensive manufactu...

"Leagile” software development: an experience report analysis of the application of lean approaches in agile software development
(2012)
Wang, Xiaofeng; Conboy, Kieran; Cawley, Oisín
Abstract:
In recent years there has been a noticeable shift in attention from those who use agile software development toward lean software development, often labelled as a shift “from agile to lean”. However, the reality may not be as simple or linear as this label implies. To provide a better understanding of lean software development approaches and how they are applied in agile software development, we have examined 30 experience reports published in past agile software conferences in which experiences of applying lean approaches in agile software development were reported. The analysis identified six types of lean application. The results of our study show that lean can be applied in agile processes in different manners for different purposes. Lean concepts, principles and practices are most often used for continuous agile process improvement, with the most recent introduction being the kanban approach, introducing a continuous, flow-based substitute to time-boxed agile processes.

Abstract:
We describe the “Privacy-Shake”, a novel interface for managing coarse grained privacy settings. We built a prototype that enables users of Buddy Tracker, an example location sharing application, to change their privacy preferences by shaking their phone. Users can enable or disable location sharing and change the level of granularity of disclosed location by shaking and sweeping their phone. In this poster we present and motivate our work on Privacy-Shake and report on a lab-based evaluation of the interface with 16 participants.

“Lots done, more to do”: the current state of agile systems development research
(2009)
Abrahamsson, Pekka; Conboy, Kieran; Wang, Xiaofeng
Abstract:
Agile systems development methods emerged as a response to the inability of previous plandriven approaches to handle rapidly changing environments (Highsmith 2002). Originating from so-called “light-weight” methods and promoted through the publication of the Agile Manifesto (2001), the agile method family have become highly prevalent in recent years. Meantime, agile system development research has gained momentum, as is evident from the increasing number of dedicated journal special issues, conferences, conference tracks and workshops. However, practitioners and consultants have largely driven the creation and dissemination of these methods. Agile research has lagged behind practice, as is often the case with new and emerging phenomena in Information Systems Development (ISD)

(2+1)-dimensional photonic crystals from Langmuir-Blodgett colloidal multilayers

Romanov, Sergei G.; Bardosova, Maria; Pemble, Martyn E.; Torres, C. M. Sotomayor
Abstract:
Angle-resolved transmission spectra of multilayers of two-dimensional colloidal crystals prepared by the Langmuir-Blodgett technique have been studied. In contrast to the light diffraction in three-dimensional colloidal crystals, optical spectra revealed only very weak correlation between layers in the Langmuir-Blodgett multilayers. Two reasons for the observed transmission minima have been identified: the diffraction at a stack of layers and the scattering of the incident beam by guided modes of the two-dimensional colloidal crystals. (Solid plus liquid) solubility of organic compounds in organic solvents - correlation and extrapolation
(2014)
Svärd, Michael; Rasmuson, Åke C.
Abstract:
A semi-empirical model is developed for the regression of (solid + liquid) solubility data with temperature. The model fulfils the required boundary conditions, allowing for robust extrapolation to higher and lower temperatures. The model combines a representation of the solid-state activity which accommodates a temperature-dependent heat capacity difference contribution with a scaled three-parameter Weibull function representing the temperature dependence of the solution activity coefficient at equilibrium. Evaluation of the model is based on previously published experimental calorimetric and solubility data of four organic compounds, fenoxycarb, fenofibrate, risperidone and butyl paraben, in five common organic solvents, methanol, ethyl acetate, acetone, acetonitrile, and toluene. The temperature dependence of the van't Hoff enthalpy of solution and its components is analysed and discussed. Among the four compounds the influence of temperature on the enthalpy of fusion varies...

1/f noise in MgO double-barrier magnetic tunnel junctions
(2011)
COEY, JOHN MICHAEL DAVID
Abstract:
Low frequency noise has been investigated in MgO double-barrier magnetic tunnel junctions (DMTJs) with tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) ratios up to 250% at room temperature. The noise shows a 1/f frequency spectrum and the minimum of the noise magnitude parameter is 1.2 x 10(-10) mu m(2) in the parallel state for DMTJs annealed at 375 degrees C. The bias dependence of noise and TMR suggests that DMTJs with MgO barriers can be useful for magnetic field sensor applications.

Abstract:
We design and fabricate the packaging of 128 × 128 silicon photonic MEMS switch device using through glass via (TGV) interposer and pitch reducing fibre array. The switch device contains 16384 MEMS switch cells and 272 grating couplers spaced at 63.5 μm in a compact footprint of 17.4 mm × 16 mm. The apodised grating couplers designed for 1300 nm have an insertion loss of 2.5 dB/facet at 10° coupling angle. The 0.5 mm thick glass interposer contains 512 electrical vias while the pitch reducing optical coupling array is polished to 40° for planar coupling.

Abstract:
Drawing on the experiences and context of others who have already used a particular resource can greatly facili- tate that resource?s reuse. Such reuse is essential when the resources in question are digital learning assets, services and models which are expensive both in terms of time and monetary expenditure to develop and use. When these re- sources are deployed in personalised settings, where each user may be delivered a tailored sequence of resources that uniquely suits their particular needs, gathering and feder- ating a rich view of how these resources are being used be- comes important. In this article we describe an approach to facilitating the federating of contextual usage data, which is compiled over the lifecycle of a resource. Given that this data is likely to come from a range of different sources, our approach will need to be able to cope with the high level of heterogeneity expected in terms of its structure, syntax and semantics. We describe how such data may be us...

Extending a Knowledge-based Network to support Temporal Event Reasoning
(2010)
O'SULLIVAN, DECLAN; KEENEY, JOHN
Abstract:
While the polling or request/response paradigm adopted by many network and systems management approaches form the backbone of modern monitoring and management systems, the most important and interesting events, faults, alerts and log messages arrive at the management agent in a push-based asynchronous manner. However, in the management infrastructure itself, at the point where events are initially processed and matched to subscribers, there have been few attempts to identify relationships or dependencies between events. This means that most of this burden is placed on the management application, or indeed the managers themselves. This research investigates enhancing the expressiveness of a knowledge-based networking middleware with the addition of three temporal operators to be used in subscriptions to select matching events. A prototype design is presented and a number of implementations are compared. The approach is also motivated using two scenarios for temporal correlation of wa...

1550 nm superluminescent diode and anti-stokes effect CCD camera based optical coherence tomography for full-field optical metrology
(2015)

Abstract:
Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is a well-established non-invasive imaging technology capable of carrying out 3D high-resolution cross-sectional images of the internal microstructure of examined material. However, almost all of these systems are expensive, requiring the use of complex optical setups, expensive light sources and complicated scanning of the sample under test. In addition, most of these systems have not taken advantage of the competitively priced optical components available at wavelength within the main optical communications band located in the 1550 nm region. A comparatively simple and inexpensive full-field OCT system (FFOCT), based on a Superluminescent Diode (SLD) with an Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifier (EDFA) light source and anti-stokes imaging device was constructed, to perform 3D cross-sectional imaging. This kind of inexpensive setup with moderate resolution could be applicable in low-level biomedical and industrial diagnostics. This work involves assembly, ...

Abstract:
Background: Next-generation sequencing platforms have revolutionised our ability to investigate the microbiota composition of complex environments, frequently through 16S rRNA gene sequencing of the bacterial component of the community. Numerous factors, including DNA extraction method, primer sequences and sequencing platform employed, can affect the accuracy of the results achieved. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of these three factors on 16S rRNA gene sequencing results, using mock communities and mock community DNA. Results: The use of different primer sequences (V4-V5, V1-V2 and V1-V2 degenerate primers) resulted in differences in the genera and species detected. The V4-V5 primers gave the most comparable results across platforms. The three Ion PGM primer sets detected more of the 20 mock community species than the equivalent MiSeq primer sets. Data generated from DNA extracted using the 2 extraction methods were very similar. Conclusions: Microbiota composit...

Abstract:
The majority of studies in Personalized Information Retrieval (PIR) literature have focused on monolingual IR, and only relatively little work has been done concerning multilingual IR. In this paper we propose a novel method to represent user models in a multilingual fashion. We argue that such representation would be more suitable for Personalized Multilingual Information Retrieval (PMIR). Furthermore, we outline two algorithms for query adaptation based on user information from the multilingual user model.

Abstract:
This perspective reviews recent advances in inverse opal structures, how they have been developed, studied and applied as catalysts, catalyst support materials, as electrode materials for batteries, water splitting applications, solar-to-fuel conversion and electrochromics, and finally as photonic photocatalysts and photoelectrocatalysts. Throughout, we detail some of the salient optical characteristics that underpin recent results and form the basis for light-matter interactions that span electrochemical energy conversion systems as well as photocatalytic systems. Strategies for using 2D as well as 3D structures, ordered macroporous materials such as inverse opals are summarized and recent work on plasmonic–photonic coupling in metal nanoparticle-infiltrated wide band gap inverse opals for enhanced photoelectrochemistry are provided.

Abstract:
High quality 2D and 3D inverse opals and hollow sphere arrays of vanadium oxide are grown on conductive substrates from colloidal polymer sphere templates formed by electrophoretic deposition or surfactant-assisted dip-coating. Inverse opals (IOs) are formed using variants of solution drop-casting, N2-gun assisted infiltration and high-rate (200 mm min−1) iterative dip-coating methods. Through Raman scattering, transmission electron microscopy and optical diffraction, we show how the oxide phase, crystallinity and structure are inter-related and controlled. Opal template removal steps are demonstrated to determine the morphology, crystallinity and phase of the resulting 2D and 3D IO structures. The ability to form high quality 2D IOs is also demonstrated using UV Ozone removal of PMMA spheres. Rapid hydrolysis of the alkoxide precursor allows the formation of 2D arrays of crystalline hollow spheres of V2O5 by utilizing over-filling during iterative dip-coating. The methods and cryst...

Abstract:
Embedding 2D layered materials into polymers and other materials as composites has resulted in the development of ultrasensitive pressure sensors, tunable conductive stretchable polymers, and thermoelectric coatings. As a wettable paint or ink, many 2D materials may be penciled, printed, or coated onto a range of surfaces for a variety of applications. However, the intrinsic conductive properties of painted coatings using 2D and layered materials are not completely understood, and conductive polymer additives may mask underlying properties such as directional conductivity. We report a process for making a paint from solvent-exfoliated Bi2Te3 into solution-dispersible 2D and few-layer (multiple quintuple) nanosheet inks, that form smooth, uniform paint blends at several concentrations of Bi2Te3. The individual solvent-exfoliated nanosheets are edge-coated by (poly)ethylene glycol to produce a paint, stable over extended period in solution. Electrical transport is found to be sensitiv...

A Semantic Model for Integrated Content Management, Localisation and Language Technology Processing

Abstract:
Providers of products and services are faced with the dual challenge of supporting the languages and individual needs of the global customer while also accommodating the increasing relevance of user-generated content. As a result, the content and localisation industries must now evolve rapidly from manually processing predicable content which arrives in large jobs to the highly automated processing of streams of fast moving, heterogeneous and unpredictable content. This requires a new generation of digital content management technologies that combine the agile flow of content from developers to localisers and consumers with the data-driven language technologies needed to handle the volume of content required to feed the demands of global markets. Data-driven technologies such as statistical machine translation, cross-lingual information retrieval, sentiment analysis and automatic speech recognition, all rely on high quality training content, which in turn must be continuall...

Improving Query and Result List Adaptation in Personalized Multilingual Information Retrieval
(2011)

Abstract:
This research study aims to improve personalization in MIR systems, by improving the relevance of multilingual search results with respect to the user and not just the query. The study investigates how to model different aspects of a multilingual search user. Information about users can be demographic information, such as language and country, or information about the user?s search interests. This information can be gathered explicitly by asking the user to supply the required information or implicitly by inferring the information from the user?s search history. The study will then investigate how to exploit the modeled user information to personalize the user?s multilingual search by performing query and result list adaptation. The main research questions that are addressed in this study are: how to improve the relevance of search results with respect to individual users in PMIR and how to construct profiles that represent aspects and interests of a multilingual search user.
