A centrifugo-magnetically actuated gas micropump
(2006)
Haeberle, S.; Schmitt, N.; Zengerle, Roland; Ducrée, Jens
Abstract:
This paper describes a novel gas micropump on a centrifugal microfluidic platform. The pump is integrated on a passive and microstructured polymer disk which is sealed with an elastomer lid featuring paramagnetic inlays. The rotational motion of this hybrid disk over a stationary magnet induces a designated sequence of volume displacements of the elastic lid, leading to a net transport of gas. The pumping pressure scales linearly with the frequency, with a maximum observable pressure of 4.1 kPa. The first application of this rotary device is the production of gas-liquid flows by pumping ambient air into a continuous centrifugal flow of liquid. The injected gas volume segments the liquid stream into a series of liquid compartments. Apart from such multi-phase flows, the new pumping technique supplements a generic air-to-liquid sampling method to centrifugal microfluidic platforms.

A change in the transportation needs today, a better future for tomorrow – climate change review
(2013)
Ekpeni, Leonard E.N.; Olabi, Abdul-Ghani
Abstract:
No sooner than later, the world will be living hell as a result of the transportation effects on our climate now escalating. The pressure is now growing towards their resultant effects to be totally eradicated in order to save our planet otherwise, the stabilisation of these effects; global warming, greenhouse gas (GHG) emission and degradation will need to be sought after. The world all over is at it now in an effort to restore our climate, to save it from the effects of these catastrophes/disasters. On the proposition of the Kyoto Protocol in1997, the main focus was to decrease greenhouse emissions of mainly six gases – Carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, sulphur hexafluoride, Hydro fluorocarbons (HFCs) and Per fluorinated Compounds (PFCs). And transport alone, accounts for over 26% of global CO2 and has been regarded as one of the few industrial sectors wherein emissions are still on the increase, on this basis, researchers and policy makers are all at it to tackle the mena...

A cluster-based representation for multi-system MT evaluation
(2007)
Stroppa, Nicolas; Owczarzak, Karolina; Way, Andy
Abstract:
Automatic evaluation metrics are often used to compare the quality of different systems. However, a small difference between the scores of two systems does not necessary reflect a real difference between their performance. Because such a difference can be significant or only due to chance, it is inadvisable to use a hard ranking to represent the evaluation of multiple systems. In this paper, we propose a cluster-based representation for quality ranking of Machine Translation systems. A comparison of rankings produced by clustering based on automatic MT evaluation metrics with those based on human judgements shows that such interpretation of automatic metric scores provides dependable means of ordering MT systems with respect to their quality. We report experimental results comparing clusterings produced by BLEU, NIST, METEOR, and GTM with those derived from human judgement (of adequacy and fluency) on the IWSLT-2006 evaluation campaign data.

A code excited linear predictive coder: using a moments algorithm
(1993)
Meehan, David
Abstract:
A speech coding algorithm was developed which was based on a new method of selecting the excitation signal from a codebook of residual error sequences. The residual error sequences in the codebook were generated from 512 frames of real speech signals. L.P.C. inverse filtering was used to obtain the residual signal. Each residual error signal was assigned an index. The index was generated using a moments algorithm. These indices were stored on a Graded Binary Tree. A Binary Search was then used to select the correct index. The use of a Graded Binary Tree in the coding algorithm reduced the search time. The algorithm faithfully reproduced the original speech when the test residual error signal was chosen from the training data. When the test residual error signal was outside the training data, synthetic speech of a recognisable quality was produced. Finally, the fundamentals of speech coders are discussed in detail and various developments are suggested.

A combined analytical approach to studying carbon dynamics in soils and sediments.
(2014)
Murphy, Brian
Abstract:
Studying the fate of organic carbon in soils and sediments is challenging due mainly to the multiplicity of relationships that exist not only between microbial consortia but between the organic components, nutrients and break down products. Understanding what is happening to carbon in microbial systems would provide valuable information for climate change studies, agricultural planning, pollution studies and more. In this project, a method was developed using gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GCMS), isotope ratio mass spectroscopy (IRMS) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) to track 13C in soil biomass. Phospholipid fatty acids (PLFA‘s) identified using GCMS were used as biomarkers to characterise microbial populations, IRMS data revealed which microbial groups were utilizing 13C labelled substrates. NMR allowed the transformations and fate of the carbon substrates to be determined. As the project progressed and developed the techniques were applied to studying organic ...

A combined audio-visual contribution to event detection in field sports broadcast video. Case study: Gaelic football
(2003)
Sadlier, David A.; O'Connor, Noel E.; Marlow, Seán; Murphy, Noel
Abstract:
In this paper we propose novel, audio-visual analysis techniques for event detection in broadcast TV sports video content. The scope of the design is constrained to the specialized domain of 'field sport', and specifically, Gaelic Football is presented as an experimental case study. We show that a combination of speech-band energy tracking in the audio domain, coupled with colour dominance pattern recognition in the video domain, provides a useful contribution to event detection for broadcast Gaelic Football matches. It is projected that, any conclusions made therein may be extended such that they function on sports content of a similar nature such as American Football, Australian Rules, Rugby Union etc.

A combined tree growing technique for block-test scheduling under power constraints
(2001)
Muresan, Valentin; Wang, Xiaojun; Muresan, Valentina; Vladutiu, M.
Abstract:
A tree growing technique is used here together with classical scheduling algorithms in order to improve the test concurrency having assigned power dissipation limits. First of all, the problem of unequal-length block-test scheduling under power dissipation constraints is modeled as a tree growing problem. Then a combination of list and force-directed scheduling algorithms is adapted to tackle it. The goal of this approach is to achieve rapidly a test scheduling solution with a near-optimal test application time. This is initially achieved with the list approach. Then the power dissipation distribution of this solution is balanced by using a force-directed global priority function. The force-directed priority function is a distribution-graph based global priority function. A constant additive model is employed for power dissipation analysis and estimation. Based on test scheduling examples, the efficiency of this approach is discussed as compared to the other approaches.

A compact and scalable encoding for updating XML based on node labeling schemes
(2013)
O'Connor, Martin F.
Abstract:
The eXtensible Markup Language (XML) has been adopted as the new standard for data exchange on the World Wide Web. As the rate of adoption increases, there is an ever pressing need to store, query and update XML in its native format, thereby eliminating the overhead of parsing and transforming XML in and out of various data formats. However, the hierarchical, ordered and semi-structured properties of the tree structure underlying the XML data model presents many challenges to updating XML. In particular, many of the tree labeling schemes were designed to solve a particular problem or provide a particular feature, often at the expense of other important features. In this dissertation, we identify the core properties that are representative of the desirable characteristics of a good dynamic labeling scheme for XML. We focus on four features central to the outstanding problems in existing dynamic labeling schemes; namely a compact label encoding, scalability, deleted node label re...

A comparative analysis of bank lending to small enterprises in Ireland and Germany
(1997)
Hanley, Aoife
Abstract:
The issue of whether the Irish banking system compares favourably or more adversely with other banking systems in the provision of finance to small businesses and in particular enterprises with a riskier profile such as those with higher volumes of current or intellectual assets to fixed assets has been addressed by several authors to date. Foley and Griffith, 1993. Kinsella ,1992 (Culliton Report). Deloitte and Touche, 1994. Bannock and Albach, 1991 (Germany). Burns and Clements, 1992 (UK). Bank specific studies such as the above are complemented by studies which examine the performance of entrepreneurs and where the issue of banking comprises an ancillary issue rather than main focal point. Carpenter, 1993. Kinsella, Clarke, Storey, Mulveanny and Coyne, 1994. Cosh and Hughes, 1994 (UK). SBRC, 1992 (UK). Hogan, 1995. Kenny, 1994. Aston Business School, 1991. A Comparative analysis: QA evaluation questions versus real-world queries
(2010)
Leveling, Johannes
Abstract:
This paper presents a comparative analysis of user queries to a web search engine, questions to a Q&A service (answers.com), and questions employed in question answering (QA) evaluations at TREC and CLEF. The analysis shows that user queries to search engines contain mostly content words (i.e. keywords) but lack structure words (i.e. stopwords) and capitalization. Thus, they resemble natural language input after case folding and stopword removal. In contrast, topics for QA evaluation and questions to answers.com mainly consist of fully capitalized and syntactically well-formed questions. Classification experiments using a na¨ıve Bayes classifier show that stopwords play an important role in determining the expected answer type. A classification based on stopwords is considerably more accurate (47.5% accuracy) than a classification based on all query words (40.1% accuracy) or on content words (33.9% accuracy). To simulate user input, questions are preprocessed by case folding and...

A comparative critique of the practice of Irish neutrality in the 'unneutral' discourse
(2008)
Devine, Karen
Abstract:
This article takes a comparative, empirical look at the practice of Irish neutrality during World War II. It critiques a model of neutrality presented in a thesis on Irish neutrality called Unneutral Ireland, consisting of factors derived from an analysis of three states regarded as well-established European neutrals—Austria, Sweden and Switzerland—that reflect the practice of neutrality. That model focused on the rights and duties of neutrality; the recognition of Ireland's status by belligerents and others; the disavowal of external help; and freedom of decision and action. This present article focuses on the factors flowing from these latter obligations that are cited in an analysis of the practice of Irish neutrality in the Unneutral thesis as proof of Ireland's 'unneutral' status, i.e. ideology; involvement in economic sanctions; partiality; the practice of Irish citizens joining the British army; and post-World War II factors such as Ireland's EEC memb...

A comparative evaluation of deep and shallow approaches to the automatic detection of common grammatical errors
(2007)
Wagner, Joachim; Foster, Jennifer; van Genabith, Josef
Abstract:
This paper compares a deep and a shallow processing approach to the problem of classifying a sentence as grammatically wellformed or ill-formed. The deep processing approach uses the XLE LFG parser and English grammar: two versions are presented, one which uses the XLE directly to perform the classification, and another one which uses a decision tree trained on features consisting of the XLE’s output statistics. The shallow processing approach predicts grammaticality based on n-gram frequency statistics: we present two versions, one which uses frequency thresholds and one which uses a decision tree trained on the frequencies of the rarest n-grams in the input sentence. We find that the use of a decision tree improves on the basic approach only for the deep parser-based approach. We also show that combining both the shallow and deep decision tree features is effective. Our evaluation is carried out using a large test set of grammatical and ungrammatical sentences. The ungrammatical t...

A comparative evaluation of interactive segmentation algorithms
(2010)
McGuinness, Kevin; O'Connor, Noel E.
Abstract:
In this paper we present a comparative evaluation of four popular interactive segmentation algorithms. The evaluation was carried out as a series of user-experiments, in which participants were tasked with extracting 100 objects from a common dataset: 25 with each algorithm, constrained within a time limit of 2 min for each object. To facilitate the experiments, a “scribble-driven” segmentation tool was developed to enable interactive image segmentation by simply marking areas of foreground and background with the mouse. As the participants refined and improved their respective segmentations, the corresponding updated segmentation mask was stored along with the elapsed time. We then collected and evaluated each recorded mask against a manually segmented ground truth, thus allowing us to gauge segmentation accuracy over time. Two benchmarks were used for the evaluation: the well-known Jaccard index for measuring object accuracy, and a new fuzzy metric, proposed in this paper, designe...

A Comparative Evaluation to Determine the Effectiveness of the Behaviour Support Classrooms and other Positive Behaviour Management Interventions in Designated Disadvantaged Schools
(2010)

Abstract:
Twelve designated disadvantaged secondary schools were involved in the research, which looked at the different approaches for dealing with inappropriate student behaviour. Six of the schools are currently involved with the National Behaviour Support Service (NBSS) in the piloting of the Behaviour Support Classrooms (BSCs) for seriously disruptive students. For comparative purposes six other schools who did not have this additional resource were studied, to determine how they go about dealing with student misbehaviour. The aim of my study is to evaluate whether the BSCs are the best way forward for schools experiencing high levels of disruptive student behaviour, and to determine how the schools without this facility manage to deal with serious behavioural incidents. My research participants included principals, year heads and personnel working in the BSCs. After considering the different research paradigms, I decided that pragmatism was the most suitable for answering my research qu...

A comparative framework: how broadly applicable is a 'rigorous' critical junctures framework?
(2009)
Hogan, John William; Doyle, David
Abstract:
The paper tests Hogan and Doyle's (2007, 2008) framework for examining critical junctures. This framework sought to incorporate the concept of ideational change in understanding critical junctures. Until its development, frameworks utilized in identifying critical junctures were subjective, seeking only to identify crisis, and subsequent policy changes, arguing that one invariably led to the other, as both occurred around the same time. Hogan and Doyle (2007, 2008) hypothesized ideational change as an intermediating variable in their framework, determining if, and when, a crisis leads to radical policy change. Here we test this framework on cases similar to, but different from, those employed in developing the exemplar. This will enable us determine whether the framework's relegation of ideational change to a condition of crisis holds, or, if ideational change has more importance than is ascribed to it by this framework. This will also enable us determined if the framework...

A comparative test of Inglehart's theory of postmaterialism
(2004)
McKenzie, Kenneth
Abstract:
Ronald Inglehart’ s theory of postmaterialism contends that since the late nineteen sixties, a new type of politics is progressively taking over from the ‘old politics’ system. Inglehart’s case is built on steady changes in the postmaterialist index (PMI), where changes in public values are regularly assessed. Whereas ‘old politics’ consisted of debates over the place and scale o f redistribution and pitted class-based parties of left and right against each other, the new politics pivots on lifestyle issues, which do not fit clearly into the left and right camps. This thesis looks at the political implications of this detected value change, gathering new and existing criticisms of Inglehart’s model, and empirically tests his claims by means of a small-n case study with France and Ireland as comparators. We test four hypotheses derived from his works: (i) that class is less predictive of vote choice; (ii) that voter discontent has been increasing; (iii) that new parties have prospere...

Abstract:
This study compared levels of inter limb asymmetry between field sports players with athletic groin pain and international rugby union players. Three dimensional kinematics and kinetics were recorded for the single leg hurdle hop and side cut movement. Analysis of characterising phases was utilised to identify significant differences in asymmetry between the two groups. The rugby union group had significantly greater asymmetry in some kinematic variables and hip kinetic variables at the beginning of the exercises. Overall however, the athletic groin pain group displayed greater asymmetry, particularly in hip moments compared with the rugby union group. These results suggest that an aspect of rehabilitation for athletic groin pain should focus on reducing asymmetric hip moments.

Abstract:
Classical scheduling approaches are applied here to overcome the problem of unequal-length block-test scheduling under power dissipation constraints. List scheduling-like approaches are proposed first as greedy algorithms to tackle the fore mentioned problem. Then, distribution-graph based approaches are described in order to achieve balanced test concurrency and test power dissipation. An extended tree growing technique is also used in combination with these classical approaches in order to improve the test concurrency having assigned power dissipation limits. A comparison between the results of the test scheduling experiments highlights the advantages and disadvantages of applying different classical scheduling algorithms to the power-constrained test scheduling problem

Abstract:
This paper deals with a recently proposed nonparametric approach to camera calibration, which is applicable to any type of sensor design. Currently, no relative quantitative performance data is available for this method. This paper addresses this issue, by providing a comprehensive evaluation with respect to the standard planar calibration technique in the literature. Experiments are conducted on simulated and real data, with the firm conclusion that the generic calibration method has the capability to outperform the standard parametric approach for imaging systems with significant distortion. The results provide important practical information for the vision community at large.

Abstract:
While cloud computing has certainly gained attention, the potential for increased uptake of the technology is still large. As a consequence, how to move and migrate to the cloud is an unanswered question for many organisations. Gaining an understanding of cloud migration processes from on-premise architectures is our aim here. For this purpose, we look at three provider-driven case studies based on the common three layers of cloud computing: Infrastructure (IaaS), platform (PaaS) and software (SaaS) as a service. These shall be complemented by a fourth, independent systems integration perspective. We extract common migration process activities for the layer-specific processes and discuss commonalities, differences and open issues. The results presented are based on expert interviews and focus groups held with major international cloud solution providers and independent consultants.

Abstract:
Background: It has been reported in the literature that people with an intellectual disability (ID) are less physically active, live more sedentary lives, have lower fitness levels and are more likely to be overweight or obese than the general population. Nine thousand people with ID are participating in Special Olympics Ireland (SOI). To date, no evidence exists on the impact of SOI participation on physical activity (PA) and physical fitness levels of adults with ID’s in Ireland. Methods: Adults with ID (16-64 years) were recruited from 4 ID services and SOI clubs throughout Ireland (n=146, male 85, female 61). Both SOI participants and non SOI participants were invited to participate. Physical measures included waist circumference, height, weight, blood pressure, heart rate and the Six Minute Walking Test. Self-report questionnaires were administered to study participants to gather data on PA levels. To get an objective measure of PA, participants were asked to wear an Actigrap...
