A coordination protocol for user-customisable cloud policy monitoring
(2013)
Wang, MingXue; Xu, Lei; Pahl, Claus
Abstract:
Cloud computing will see a increasing demand for end-user customisation and personalisation of multi-tenant cloud service offerings. Combined with an identified need to address QoS and governance aspects in cloud computing, a need to provide user-customised QoS and governance policy management and monitoring as part of an SLA management infrastructure for clouds arises. We propose a user-customisable policy definition solution that can be enforced in multi-tenant cloud offerings through an automated instrumentation and monitoring technique. We in particular allow service processes that are run by cloud and SaaS providers to be made policy-aware in a transparent way.

A corpus-based study of translator style: Oeser’s and Orth-Guttmann’s German translations of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Beautiful and Damned
(2005)
Winters, Marion
Abstract:
The present thesis comprises a corpus-based study of translator style, comparing two German translations of the novel The Beautiful and Damned by Francis Scott Fitzgerald. The translations, by Hans-Christian Oeser and Renate Orth-Guttmann, were both published in 1998. The study isolates linguistic features in which the individual styles of the translators manifest themselves on the textual level and investigates the influence these microlevel linguistic choices have on the macrolevel of the novel. An electronic corpus was compiled, comprising The Beautiful and Damned and its two translations, both entitled Die Schdnen und Verdammten. An initial data-driven exploration of the corpus suggested that the use of modal particles could be a feature of translator style. A quantitative analysis was carried out to discover potential patterns of the use of modal particles by the translators, and the results showed that while both translators use modal particles to the extent and in the general...

A cost benefit operator for efficient multi level genetic algorithm searches
(2007)
Mitchell, George G.; McMullin, Barry; Decraene, James
Abstract:
In this paper we present a novel cost benefit operator that assists multi level genetic algorithm searches. Through the use of the cost benefit operator, it is possible to dynamically constrain the search of the base level genetic algorithm, to suit the user’s requirements. Initially we review meta-evolutionary (multi-level genetic algorithm) approaches. We note that the current literature has abundant studies on meta-evolutionary GAs. However these approaches have not identified an efficient approach to termination of base GA search or a means to balance practical consideration such as quality of solution and the expense of computation. Our Quality time tradeoff operator (QTT) is user defined, and acts as a base level termination operator and also provides a fitness value for the meta-level GA. In this manner the amount of computation time spent on less encouraging configurations can be specified by the user. Our approach has been applied to a computationally intensive test problem...

A course agnostic approach to predicting student success from VLE log data using recurrent neural networks
(2017)
Corrigan, Owen; Smeaton, Alan F.
Abstract:
We describe a method of improving the accuracy of a learning analytics system through the application of a Recurrent Neural Network over all students in a University, regardless of course. Our target is to discover how well a student will do in a class given their interaction with a virtual learning environment. We show how this method performs well when we want to predict how well students will do, even if we do not have a model trained based on their specific course.

A critical investigation into the spray-drying of hydroxyapatite powder for thermal spray applications
(2006)
Murtaza, Qasim
Abstract:
This work examines the investigation of the spray drying process of Hydroxyapatite powder (HA) used as a thermal spray deposit in the application of orthopaedic femoral implants. In this research, the Niro- Minor™ mixed spray dryer was used for both modelling and experimental studies. The process parameters investigated included HA slurry viscosity, temperature, and air flowrate. Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) modelling and validation of the spray drying of HA powder was performed. An analysis of the spray drying of the HA slurry, was performed using the UMETRI AB, MODDE 7 software. For the CFD analysis, the Spray dryer was divided into the three parts; two-fluid nozzle, the drying chamber, and atomisation. The Standard K-e, Reliable K-e and Reynolds Stress Model models were used to predict velocity profiles of the air, feed pipe of the two external nozzle and temperature profile for the drying chamber. Different model results were compared, studied and compared with experimenta...

A cross-cultural study of humour in magazine advertising
(1993)
Browne, Deirdre
Abstract:
This thesis looks at the fascinating issue of cross-cultural differences in the perception and portrayal of humour in magazine advertisements, with specific reference to Ireland, Germany and Austria. The primary objective of this research is to investigate whether the way people perceive humour in advertising is conditioned by culture and/or gender. The secondary objective is to analyse the portrayal of humour in specific current magazine advertisements. It is hoped that the research will be of value for academics and practitioners in the cultures under investigation and will form the basis of further research in this field. By way of introduction, the thesis attempts to define the concept of humour and discusses three of the most popular theories of humour. This is followed by a review of the existing literature and studies on humour m advertising which, on the whole, have concentrated on the effectiveness of humour and have yielded far from consistent results. This overall review...

A cross-layer quality-oriented energy-efficient scheme for multimedia delivery in wireless local area networks
(2014)
Song, Yang
Abstract:
Wireless communication technologies, although emerged only a few decades ago, have grown fast in both popularity and technical maturity. As a result, mobile devices such as Personal Digital Assistants (PDA) or smart phones equipped with embedded wireless cards have seen remarkable growth in popularity and are quickly becoming one of the most widely used communication tools. This is mainly determined by the flexibility, convenience and relatively low costs associated with these devices and wireless communications. Multimedia applications have become by far one of the most popular applications among mobile users. However this type of application has very high bandwidth requirements, seriously restricting the usage of portable devices. Moreover, the wireless technology involves increased energy consumption and consequently puts huge pressure on the limited battery capacity which presents many design challenges in the context of battery powered devices. As a consequence, power managemen...

Abstract:
In an industrial context all process models require a certain amount of tailoring to fit to the business environment of any specific organization in which the model is to be deployed. Process models should therefore be accompanied by tailoring guidelines and approaches to assist with strategic and operational goal alignment that support their use in industry. This paper explores shortcomings of process improvement and the existing process models, suggesting that a more holistic approach should be taken to process improvement in the modern organization. The paper provides an overview of systems thinking and the Cynefin framework that organizations can use to detect the characteristics of the domain in which they are operate. Knowing their domain helps the organization realize the amount of tailoring and goal alignment necessary to benefit from implementing process model guidance.

Abstract:
Ambient systems generate large volumes of data for many of their application areas with XML often the format for data exchange. As a result, large scale ambient systems such as smart cities require some form of optimization before different components can merge their data streams. In data warehousing, the cube structure is often used for optimizing the analytics process with more recent structures such as dwarf, providing new orders of magnitude in terms of optimizing data extraction. However, these systems were developed for relational data and as a result, we now present the development of an XML dwarf to manage ambient systems generating XML data.

Abstract:
We introduce a new image dataset for Irish Sign Language (ISL) recognition. We filmed human subjects performing ISL hand-shapes and movements, resulting in 468 videos. Then, we extracted frames from the videos. This resulted in a total of 58,114 images for the 23 common hand-shapes from the ISL language. This dataset is a part of our ongoing work on ISL recognition using pattern recognition methods. In addition to the dataset, we report experiments using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) where we reached 95% recognition accuracy.

Abstract:
Brain tissue segmentation is a prerequisite for many subsequent automatic quantitative analysis techniques. As with many medical imaging tasks, a shortage of manually annotated training data is a limiting factor which is not easily overcome, particularly using recent deep-learning technology. We present a deep convolutional neural network (CNN) trained on just 2 publicly available manually annotated volumes, trained to annotate 8 tissue types in neonatal T2 MRI. The network makes use of several recent deep-learning techniques as well as artificial augmentation of the training data, to achieve state-of-the- art results on public challenge data.

A design methodology to enable sampling PLLs to synthesise fractional-N frequencies
(2011)
Xu, Tao; Linigyong, Shen; Condon, Marissa
Abstract:
A novel design methodology is proposed to enable sampling phase-locked loops (SPLL) to synthesise fractional-N frequencies. To date, SPLL can only generate integer-N frequencies. The benefit is that the proposed SPLL has the advantages of both fractional-N phase-locked loop (FN-PLL) and SPLL, such as the faster frequency switching, a smaller phase jump and a larger loop gain. Since the frequency divider can be omitted in SPLL, the associated phase noise, power and hardware consumption can be ignored. Also, the design work is simplified, since the complex multi-phase frequency divider is not needed in the proposed fractional-N sampling phase-locked loop (FN-SPLL).

A detailed analysis of phrase-based and syntax-based machine translation: the search for systematic differences
(2012)
Kaljahi, Rasoul Samed Zadeh; Rubino, Raphael; Roturier, Johann; Foster, Jennifer
Abstract:
This paper describes a range of automatic and manual comparisons of phrase-based and syntax-based statistical machine translation methods applied to English-German and English-French translation of user-generated content. The syntax-based methods underperform the phrase-based models and the relaxation of syntactic constraints to broaden translation rule coverage means that these models do not necessarily generate output which is more grammatical than the output produced by the phrase-based models. Although the systems generate different output and can potentially be fruitfully combined, the lack of systematic difference between these models makes the combination task more challenging.

A detailed study of desalination exergy models and their application to a semi-conductor ultra-pure water plant
(2011)
Fitzsimons, Lorna
Abstract:
Ultra-Pure Water (UPW) is a high energy raw material used in the semiconductor manufacturing industry. However, to date, the production of UPW has received little focus in terms of energy consumption mitigation. Exergy analysis is perhaps the most powerful tool available in the search for industrial energy efficiency. The objective of this research was to develop an approach for the exergy analysis of Semiconductor UPW plants in an effort to characterise energy consumption. However, following an extensive literature review, it became evident that several desalination exergy models were in current use, and it was unclear which model was the most appropriate, presenting a serious challenge to researchers seeking to apply exergy analysis to water purification processes. A detailed study and comparison of two predominant desalination exergy models was undertaken to determine the most appropriate model for UPW and other water purification applications. Neither of these models was deemed ...

A dialogical approach to developing professional competence in assessment

Abstract:
Improving the students learning experience is closely connected with the promotion an implementation of an assessment strategy whose effectiveness relies on the quality of the formative aspect. Assessment can promote or hinder learning and it is therefore a powerful force to be reckoned within Education. The literature on assessment makes it quite clear that assessment shapes and drives learning in powerful, though not always helpful, ways (Ramsden, 1997). If we assume that assessment should maximise the opportunities for those assessed to learn and develop, the tendency to reduce assessment purely to a classification device should be counteracted. The demonstration of knowledge should reflect deeper forms of learning rather that regurgitation and parroting of undigested information. Furthermore while traditional forms of assessment such as essays and end of term examinations -which are still predominantly used in higher education in Ireland as the sole assessment methods- may be ...

A Dirichlet problem for a coupled system of two singularly perturbed convection-diffusion ordinary differential equations
(2003)
Bellew, Seamus
Abstract:
A Dirichlet problem for a system of two singularly perturbed convection-diffusion ordinary differential equations is examined where th e two singular perturbation parameters can be of a different order. A finite difference numerical method whose solutions converge pointwise independently of the singular perturbation parameters is constructed. A full theoretical analysis is provided which shows that the numerical method is robust. This is done over a piecewise uniform fitted mesh involving two transition points. The first differential equation has only one dependent variable while the second equation has two dependent variables. The solution to the first differential equation is present in the second differential equation and th is introduces coupling which is examined in this thesis. The solution of the first differential equation is decomposed into regular and singular components. The numerical solution is decomposed in an analogous manner. The convergence of the numerical method...

A discourse analysis of interactions from an online pro-anorexia forum
(2013)
Ascari, Manuela
Abstract:
My research takes a look at the phenomenon of pro-anorexia websites by focusing on conversations from a public pro-anorexia forum. There is pressure on health experts and Internet hosts to oppose this controversial phenomenon because of the concern, shared by experts and lay people alike, that these websites encourage eating disorders and provide a dysfunctional, anti-recovery type of social support to those who are struggling with this problem. However, to conceive of these online spaces as yet another manifestation of a psychopathology is to overshadow the socio-cultural context in which the phenomenon has emerged, which includes: the silencing of the experiences of eating disordered individuals and their stigmatization as irrational or mentally disturbed; the dynamics of socialization and community-building in an increasingly online world; and, crucially, the fact that, in Western societies, a concern with dieting and thinness is not exclusive to women with an eating disorder, bu...

A discourse analysis of psychotherapists’ account of their work with people who are taking prescribed anti-depressant medication.
(2015)
Mulligan, Nigel
Abstract:
Rates of depression are growing worldwide. Depression usually involves symptoms such as negative thinking, feelings of helplessness and a loss of energy and it can also affect physical ill health. The causes of depression can be attributed to a number of interrelated factors including biological, psychological and social elements. Recommended treatment interventions for symptoms of depression include anti-depressant medication and psychotherapy. Certain anti-depressants can cause unpleasant side effects with some people. There is little research or literature investigating the clinical observations and insights of psychotherapists regarding the impact of anti-depressant medication on their work and the potential issues therein. Within this Discourse Analysis study, individual interviews were carried out with seven psychotherapists from varied therapeutic orientations. The semi-structured interviews enquired as to whether and how psychotherapists make any adjustments to their therape...

A discrete simulation model for heterogeneous traffic including bicycles on urban road networks
(2014)
Vasic, Jelena
Abstract:
Environment and health-related concerns mean that pedal-bicycles as an alternative mode of urban transport are gaining ground, with study of motorised/non-motorised traffic mix a topic of practical interest in transportation science and traffic modelling. This thesis reports on a simulation model, developed for heterogeneous traffic on city networks with AD HOC lane-sharing, characteristic of Dublin streets. While based on simple cellular automaton rules, the vehicle movement model also accounts for vehicle type heterogeneity and network-specific factors, including the resolution of conflicts and effects of driver decisions on movement dynamics. The model has been implemented as an agent-based simulation framework. Its spatial component is based on a modular design that facilitates straightforward scenario configuration and scalability. In order to perform large network simulations, the framework has been adapted for parallel processing. Issues of both static and dynamic load balanc...

A discriminative latent variable-based "DE" classifier for Chinese–English SMT
(2010)
Du, Jinhua; Way, Andy
Abstract:
Syntactic reordering on the source-side is an effective way of handling word order differences. The (DE) construction is a flexible and ubiquitous syntactic structure in Chinese which is a major source of error in translation quality. In this paper, we propose a new classifier model — discriminative latent variable model (DPLVM) — to classify the DE construction to improve the accuracy of the classification and hence the translation quality. We also propose a new feature which can automatically learn the reordering rules to a certain extent. The experimental results show that the MT systems using the data reordered by our proposed model outperform the baseline systems by 6.42% and 3.08% relative points in terms of the BLEU score on PB-SMT and hierarchical phrase-based MT respectively. In addition, we analyse the impact of DE annotation on word alignment and on the SMT phrase table.
