Abstract:
Meeting, socializing and conversing online with a group of people using teleconferencing systems is still quite differ- ent from the experience of meeting face to face. We are abruptly aware that we are online and that the people we are engaging with are not in close proximity. Analogous to how talking on the telephone does not replicate the experi- ence of talking in person. Several causes for these differences have been identified and we propose inspiring and innova- tive solutions to these hurdles in attempt to provide a more realistic, believable and engaging online conversational expe- rience. We present the distributed and scalable framework REVERIE that provides a balanced mix of these solutions. Applications build on top of the REVERIE framework will be able to provide interactive, immersive, photo-realistic ex- periences to a multitude of users that for them will feel much more similar to having face to face meetings than the expe- rience offered by conventional teleconfere...

A framework for robust control of uncertainty in self-adaptive software connectors
(2014)
Jamshidi, Pooyan
Abstract:
Context and motivations. The desired behavior of a system in ubiquitous environments considers not only its correct functionality, but also the satisfaction of its non-functional properties, i.e., its quality of service. Given the heterogeneity and dynamism characterizing the ubiquitous environments and the need for continuous satisfaction of non-functional properties, self-adaptive solutions appear to be an appropriate approach to achieve interoperability. In this work, self-adaptation is adopted to enable software connectors to adapt the interaction protocols run by the connected components to let them communicate in a timely manner and with the required level of quality. However, this self-adaptation should be dependable, reliable and resilient to be adopted in dynamic, unpredictable environments with different sources of uncertainty. The majority of current approaches for the construction of self-adaptive software ignore the uncertainty underlying non-functional requirement veri...

A framework for selecting deep learning hyper-parameters
(2015)
O'Donoghue , Jim ; Roantree, Mark
Abstract:
Recent research has found that deep learning architectures show significant improvements over traditional shallow algorithms when mining high dimensional datasets. When the choice of algorithm employed, hyper-parameter setting, number of hidden layers and nodes within a layer are combined, the identification of an optimal configuration can be a lengthy process. Our work provides a framework for building deep learning architectures via a stepwise approach, together with an evaluation methodology to quickly identify poorly performing architectural configurations. Using a dataset with high dimensionality, we illustrate how different architectures perform and how one algorithm configuration can provide input for fine-tuning more complex models.

A framework for sign language recognition using support vector machines and active learning for skin segmentation and boosted temporal sub-units
(2007)
Awad, George M.
Abstract:
This dissertation describes new techniques that can be used in a sign language recognition (SLR) system, and more generally in human gesture systems. Any SLR system consists of three main components: Skin detector, Tracker, and Recognizer. The skin detector is responsible for segmenting skin objects like the face and hands from video frames. The tracker keeps track of the hand location (more specifically the bounding box) and detects any occlusions that might happen between any skin objects. Finally, the recognizer tries to classify the performed sign into one of the sign classes in our vocabulary using the set of features and information provided by the tracker. In this work, we propose a new technique for skin segmentation using SVM (support vector machine) active learning combined with region segmentation information. Having segmented the face and hands, we need to track them across the frames. So, we have developed a unified framework for segmenting and tracking skin objects an...

A framework for the assembly and delivery of multimodal graphics in E-learning environments
(2011)
McMullen, Declan
Abstract:
In recent years educators and education institutions have embraced E-Learning environments as a method of delivering content to and communicating with their learners. Particular attention needs to be paid to the accessibility of the content that each educator provides. In relation to graphics, content providers are instructed to provide textual alternatives for each graphic using either the “alt” attribute or the “longdesc” attribute of the HTML IMG tag. This is not always suitable for graphical concepts inherent in technical topics due to the spatial nature of the information. As there is currently no suggested alternative to the use of textual descriptions in E-Learning environments, blind learners are at a significant disadvantage when attempting to learn Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematical (STEM) subjects online. A new approach is required that will provide blind learners with the same learning capabilities enjoyed by their sighted peers in relation to graphics. Mul...

Abstract:
The engineering body of knowledge contains an array of methodologies and techniques to address the effectiveness and efficiency of operational activities within a manufacturing environment. One such example is simulation modelling, a powerful analytical tool that can potentially be valuable in assisting decision makers, managers and engineers to gauge improvement opportunities and achieve process advancements. However, the cost of ownership for simulation models is not insignificant even for large multinationals, this stems from the requirements for specialist skills in simulation software, model development, data mining and statistical analysis. Simulation projects typically require a large investment to develop and usually are used-once-and-thrown-away. To reuse the model, it would require repeating a large portion of the development cycle. In order for simulation modelling to achieve wider recognition as a decision support tool there is a necessity to reduce the cost of model mai...

A framework for user-assisted knowledge acquisition from sensor data
(2013)
Conroy, Kenneth
Abstract:
The availability of a new generation of accurate, low-cost sensors to scientists has resulted in widespread deployment of these sensors in a variety of environments. Data generated by these devices are often in a raw, proprietary or unstructured format. As a result, it is difficult for scientists to analyse or query across various biological and physiological sensor data values. There exists both a physical-digital divide between sensor data with related real-world conditions, and a knowledge divide between the information needs of domain specialists. A key challenge is to bridge these divisions in order to allow scientists to make better decisions based on the sensed in- formation. The goal of this research is to show that low level data collection resources such as sensors can be used for high level query expressions and knowledge extraction, without the need for expensive human based operations. To achieve this goal, it was necessary to deliver a generic approach to enriching raw...

Abstract:
This paper describes the development of a platform where a silicon photo-multiplier (SiPM) sensor co-rotates with a “Lab-on-a-Disc” (LoaD). This platform includes a modular data-logger and, to avoid the need for electrical slip rings, it is wirelessly powered. This system is optimized for the detection of chemiluminescence. It is characterized on-disc using dilutions of HRP tagged antibodies and shows good agreement with a commercial luminometer. Additionally, preliminary work towards developing a fully integrated on-disc ELISA assay for CVD detection is presented.

A fully automatic CAD-CTC system based on curvature analysis for standard and low-dose CT data
(2008)
Chowdhury, Tarik A.; Whelan, Paul F.; Ghita, Ovidiu
Abstract:
Computed tomography colonography (CTC) is a rapidly evolving noninvasive medical investigation that is viewed by radiologists as a potential screening technique for the detection of colorectal polyps. Due to the technical advances in CT system design, the volume of data required to be processed by radiologists has increased significantly, and as a consequence the manual analysis of this information has become an increasingly time consuming process whose results can be affected by inter- and intrauser variability. The aim of this paper is to detail the implementation of a fully integrated CAD-CTC system that is able to robustly identify the clinically significant polyps in the CT data. The CAD-CTC system described in this paper is a multistage implementation whose main system components are: 1) automatic colon segmentation; 2) candidate surface extraction; 3) feature extraction; and 4) classification. Our CAD-CTC system performs at 100% sensitivity for polyps larger than 10 mm, 92% s...

Abstract:
Although there are various kinds of processes designed to manage the complexities of software development, it is still a challenging endeavor. Recently, a significant number of researchers have started to investigate social problems such as incompatibilities with respect to personality that is likely to be encountered in all stages of the software development process. However, there is no computer-based artifact to reveal the personality types of software practitioners. To bridge this gap, a virtual 3D assessment environment is developed with the ability to immerse individuals similar to a realistic model of the assessment. The interactive questionnaire is based on previous interactive personality assessment framework, which was specifically designed for software engineers. Based on the developed tool, a study was conducted on software practitioners. The data gathered via a survey study from software practitioners is analyzed to observe the difference between the results of paper-ba...

Timmons, Michelle
Abstract:
One o f the most important stages in the localisation process is the provision of high quality help and documentation in the target languages. Translation of computer manuals and Help files consists of: (i) translating the text (ii) maintaining the formatting of the source. Although many tools are available to translators, the greatest need for standardised tools exists in the area of formatting and layout of documentation. At present a significant proportion of time allocated to this stage is spent checking that the formatting has not changed as a consequence of translation. For example, properties such as font type, font size and style (e.g. bold, italic) may accidentally be changed during translation. It is also possible that two paragraphs are combined into one, or even deleted altogether from the text. The aim of this research is to assess the viability of developing a generic comparison process for documentation files. This process should be able to take two text-based docum...

A generic framework for colour texture segmentation
(2004)
Nammalwar, Padmapriya
Abstract:
This thesis proposes a novel method to combine the colour and the texture for colour texture segmentation. The objective of this research work is to derive a framework for colour texture segmentation and to determine the contribution of colour in colour texture analysis. The colour texture processing is based on the feature extraction from colour-textured images. The texture features were obtained from the luminance plane along with the colour features from the chrominance planes. Based on the above mentioned approach, a method was developed for colour texture segmentation. The proposed method unifies colour and texture features to solve the colour texture segmentation problem. Two of the grey scale texture analysis techniques, Local Binary Pattern (LBP) and Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) based filter approach were extended to colour images. An unsupervised fc-means clustering was used to cluster pixels in the chrominance planes. Non-parametric test was used to test the similarity ...

Abstract:
The paper presents an approach to segmenting broadcast TV news programmes automatically into individual news stories. We first segment the programme into individual shots, and then a number of analysis tools are run on the programme to extract features to represent each shot. The results of these feature extraction tools are then combined using a support vector machine trained to detect anchorperson shots. A news broadcast can then be segmented into individual stories based on the location of the anchorperson shots within the programme. We use one generic system to segment programmes from two different broadcasters, illustrating the robustness of our feature extraction process to the production styles of different broadcasters.

A graduate capability focused top down approach for developing third level programmes
(2008)
Hashmi, Saleem
Abstract:
Employers of engineering graduates are looking for what exactly the new recruits can do as opposed to just what knowledge base they have. For any Engineering Programme it has to become more important to ensure that each subject taught identifies a definite link to a set of “Learning Outcomes” or “Ability Markers” which the student completing that subject/module will acquire. When developing a new programme, the approach taken can be top down in which the graduate’s capabilities are identified first. This follows selection of subjects/modules with associated “Learning Outcomes” which provide the foundation for the competence and capability of the graduates. The alternative is the “Bottom Up” approach in which all the modules are compiled and the Learning Outcomes of each module are established and listed. The Programme Learning Outcomes are then synthesised from the global list of the module Learning Outcomes. This approach suits better for reformatting existing programmes which have...

A grating-tunable external-cavity laser based on a semiconductor laser diode
(1993)
Hurley, Brian Kevin
Abstract:
Conventional semiconductor laser diodes have found limited applications in the areas of spectroscopy and sensors due to their multimode output and relatively large linewidth. Although single mode operation is possible with the use of distributed feedback techniques this tends to be at the expense of tunability. However operation of a laser diode in an external cavity gives a tunable narrow-linewidth source ideal for spectroscopic and sensing applications. This work details the design and construction of a tunable extemal-cavity semiconductor diode laser. The external reflector used is a diffraction grating operating in the Littrow geometry. The collimated first order diffracted beam is focused on the antireflection coated facet of a British Telecom Research Laboratory 1 3fjm laser chip 55cm away. The cavity has been characterised using a lm focal length grating monochromator and a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer. The laser behaved in the predicted manner exhibiting a great...

A Green Chemical Approach for the Synthesis of Gold Nanoparticles: Characterization and Mechanistic Aspect

Das, Sujoy K; Marsili, Enrico
Abstract:
This IRCSET-EMPOWER (Irish Research Council for Science, Engineering and Technology Postdoctoral Research Grant) project aims to improve current methodology for the synthesis of metal nanoparticles (NPs). The development of efficient methodology for metal nanomaterials synthesis is an economical and environmental challenge. While the current methods for NPs synthesis are often energy-intensive and involve toxic chemicals, NPs biosynthesis can be carried on at circumneutral pH and mild temperature, resulting in low cost and environmental impact. Nanomaterial biosynthesis has been already observed in magnetotactic bacteria, diatoms, and S-layer bacteria, however, controlled NPs biosynthesis is a relatively new area of research with considerable potential for development. A thorough understanding of the biochemical mechanism involved in NPs biosynthesis is needed, before biosynthetic methods can be economically competitive. The analysis and identification of active species in the nucle...

A grounded theory of football fan community identity and co-production: Consumer roles in brand culture, meaning, and value co-creation in virtual communities

Healy, Jason C.
Abstract:
This study theorizes why and how consumers consume. Using a combined methodology, drawing upon Netnography and Grounded Theory, to study an online fan forum called RedAndWhiteKop, this thesis considers brand culture/meaning and value co-creation. The research site is a VC containing football fans who are views as stakeholders of the organisation Liverpool Football Club. Following emergent fit with woven in literature streams found in managerial marketing as Service-Dominant Logic and the consumer research field known as Consumer Culture Theory (CCT), analysis is conducted on fan consumer behaviours leading to submission of a Typology of Seven Consumer Community Cultural Co-creative Roles. The author reflects on existing theoretical consumer responses to market offerings of exit, voice, loyalty, and twist, found in literature; adopting these as four co-creative roles. This study contributes three new consumer co-creative roles of entry, re-entry, and non-entry. This study's fin...

A grounded theory of requirements documentation in the practice of software development
(2002)
Power, Norah M.
Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with the concept of a “ good enough” requirements document. It takes the position, based on empirical observations, that standard prescriptive approaches have failed to identify the necessary and sufficient characteristics of a good requirements document, because what is good enough in one situation may not be desirable or acceptable in another. Therefore, no single set o f criteria can define “a good requirements document”. The thesis presents a grounded theory which attempts to explain the diversity of styles of requirements documents found in practice, in relation to the variety of situations in which software products and systems are developed. It identifies the factors that might be useful to categorise situations from the point of view of requirements documentation. Requirements documents are widely used in software development, an activity typically carried out in an organisational context. Organisational theory suggests that the best approach in an...

A grounded theory of the role of the directors of nursing in band one teaching hospitals in Ireland
(2006)
Hogan, Jennifer Margaret
Abstract:
It is commonly believed that concepts of power, authority and influence are synonymous. Luthans (1992) suggests that power and authority are separate but related concepts. He identifies power as the ability to get an individual or group to do something, while authority gives the person attempting to wield the power legitimacy and is actually a source of power. Unlike authority, power is not always nor does it need to be legitimate. Theories of power will be discussed and integrated into the final theory. A grounded theory methodology was used to explore the role of a sample of the Directors of Nursing in the Band One Teaching Hospitals in Ireland. In-depth interviews were held with eleven Directors of Nursing. A grounded theory of 'Powerless Responsibility’ was identified. The level of responsibility for keeping the hospital functioning is not commensurate with the level of influence and/or power that Directors of Nursing exert. Directors of Nursing in Band One Hospitals in I...

A hermeneutic phenomenological enquiry into homelessness
(2014)
Eustace, Susan
Abstract:
Research into homelessness has been predominantly quantitative in design, solution-focused and may have effectively concealed the phenomenon itself. This study utilised a hermeneutic phenomenological methodology, based on Martin Heidegger’s philosophy, to reveal some essential, constitutive characteristics of homelessness. In-depth qualitative interviews were conducted with six participants accessed through a service provider for homeless persons. Passing Time and Taking Care emerged as essential, constitutive characteristics and were examined to deepen our understanding of the meaning and ground of homelessness itself (Heidegger, 1962). Passing Time revealed boredom as the mood of homelessness and disclosed the daily challenges faced in filling or wasting time when homeless. It is revealed that through profound boredom, homeless persons exist as an empty self, suspended in an empty world. Taking Care disclosed something of the participants’ capacity to take care of themselves and t...

A hierarchy of SPI activities for software SMEs: results from ISO/IEC 12207-based SPI assessments

Abstract:
In an assessment of software process improvement (SPI) in 15 software small- and –medium-sized enterprises (software SMEs), we applied the broad spectrum of software specific and system context processes in ISO/IEC 12207 to the task of examining SPI in practice. Using the data collected in the study, we developed a four-tiered pyramidal hierarchy of SPI for software SMEs, with processes in the higher tiers undergoing SPI in more companies than processes on lower level tiers. The development of the hierarchy of SPI activities for software SMEs can facilitate future evolutions of process maturity reference frameworks, such as ISO/IEC 15504, in better supporting software development in software SMEs. Furthermore, the findings extend our body of knowledge concerning the practice of SPI in software SMEs, a large and vital sector of the software development community that has largely avoided the implementation of established process maturity and software quality management standards.

A high-speed optical star network using TDMA and all-optical demultiplexing techniques
(1996)
Barry, Liam P.; Guignard, Celine; Debeau, J.; Boittin, R.; Bernard, M.
Abstract:
The authors demonstrate the use of time-division multiplexing (TDM) to realize a high capacity optical star network. The fundamental element of the demonstration network is a 10 ps, wavelength tunable, low jitter, pulse source. Electrical data is encoded onto three optical pulse trains, and the resultant low duty cycle optical data channels are multiplexed together using 25 ps fiber delay lines. This gives an overall network capacity of 40 Gb/s. A nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM) is used to carry out the demultiplexing at the station receiver. The channel to be switched out can be selected by adjusting the phase of the electrical signal used to generate the control pulses for the NOLM. By using external injection into a gain-switched distributed feedback (DFB) laser we are able to obtain very low jitter control pulses of 4-ps duration (RMS jitter <1 ps) after compression of the highly chirped gain switched pulses in a normal dispersive fiber. This enables us to achieve excell...

A high-speed router featuring minimal delay variation

Collier, Martin
Abstract:
This paper describes a technique for implementing the switch fabric of a high-speed router (with a throughput in excess of 600 Gb/s based on the current slate of the art), with the following properties. Delay performance is virtually identical to that of a standard output-buffered switch, and the switch fabric preserves the packet sequence, so that no resequencing is required for segmented packets. Clock rates are moderate except at ingress and egress points. This is achieved by distributing traffic across a number of crossbar switches operating at a low bit rate. The techniques used to resolve contention in the crossbar switches are described, and the bottlenecks limiting the capacity of the switch are discussed.
