Abstract:
In traditional biomedical diagnostics blood samples have predominantly been used as the test specimen for detection of various conditions. Recent advances in sensor technology, combined with the need for non-invasive diagnostics, has led to the development of methods and devices which target more easily accessible biological specimens such as sweat, saliva and breath [1]. These advances and the success of wearable devices monitoring physiological and environmental parameters have led to interest from large companies such as Google and Apple in the production of wearable biochemical sensors. Advances in electrochemical sensing have led to breakthroughs in wearable sensing, including a wearable sensor for monitoring of multiple biomarkers in exercise induced sweat [2]. This work presents a fully integrated watch-type platform for harvesting and analysing the sodium content of sweat in real-time. This has been achieved through the combination of miniaturised all solid-state ion select...

‘The teacher is here to ask for your help’: A story of schools, employers and networks.
(2005)
Kamp, Annelies
Abstract:
This paper explores the development of the Jobs4Kids (J4K) campaign, a joint initiative of the SGR LLEN Employer Reference Group and the Beacon Foundation. Involving a three-year business plan, the J4K campaign aims to broker young people into employment in local jobs in the region. The campaign is the result of the intersection between an evolving project within the LLEN and the growth of an established program of the Beacon Foundation. The paper will use a Deleuzian lens to explore the ground shifts that have occurred in the process of forming this connection; I am concerned with the intersecting movements of different orders that have created a necessary transitory coordination. Within such a ‘rhizome’ there are only lines: dimensional lines of segmentarity and stratification and lines of flight as ‘the maximum dimension after which the multiplicity undergoes metamorphosis, changes in nature’ (Deleuze & Guattari 1987 p.21). My perspective of this metamorphosis is specif...

‘To protect my health, or to protect my health data?’ Eexamining the influence of health information privacy concerns on citizens’ health technology adoption.
(2016)
Kenny, Grace
Abstract:
This study conducts a holistic investigation of citizens’ health information privacy concerns (HIPC). Specifically, it develops a framework for examining the drivers, dimensions, and outcomes of HIPC. It is proposed that HIPC are formed from individuals’ characteristics, perceptions, and experiences. HIPC are expected to reduce individuals’ intentions (1) to accept Electronic Health Records (EHRs) and (2) to adopt mobile health (mHealth) solutions. To explore these assumptions, the study utilises a three-stage sequential mixed methods approach. In the first stage, exploratory interviews were conducted to refine the proposed framework. In the second stage, the hypothesised relationships in the framework were empirically tested, using a survey of 445 citizens in Ireland and the United States. In the third stage, in-depth interviews were conducted with 50 citizens in both countries to further explore these relationships. The quantitative and qualitative findings were then integrated to...

‘Water, water, every where, Nor any drop to drink’
(2014)
Diamond, Dermot
Abstract:
Despite decades of research and huge investment, remote monitoring of the state of fresh and sea-water using all but the simplest sensors remains prohibitively expensive. As water metering and charges are increasingly implemented across Europe, can the ordinary person expect to obtain devices that can enable them to independently check the quality of their drinking water? Will citizens be able to share this data, and access other data related to their environment, like air quality? The signs are that they will, but the path forward is not straightforward. In this lecture I will discuss the current status of autonomous sensors for environmental monitoring, and speculate on the key breakthroughs that could drive a sensor 'revolution', which has the potential to place a vast amount of environmental information in the public domain.

‘You’ve got to teach people that racism is wrong and then they won’t be racist’: Curricular representations and young people’s understandings of ‘race’ and racism.
(2012)
Bryan, Audrey
Abstract:
This paper critically examines the discursive (mis) representation of ‘race’ and racism in the formal curriculum. Combining qualitative data derived from interviews with 35 young people who were enrolled in a Dublin-based, ethnically diverse secondary school, with a critical discursive analysis of 20 textbooks, the paper explores parallels between young people’s understandings of ‘race’ and racism and curricular representations of these constructs. It is argued that the formal education system reinforces, rather than challenges, popular theories of racism, and endorses the ideological framework of colourblind racism by providing definitions and explanations which individualize, minimize, and naturalize racism. The analysis centres around four major inter-related themes: (1) the individualization of racism; (2) the attribution of racism to difference; (3) the role of narratives of denial and redemption in the construction of an ‘anti-racist’ state; and (4) the reification of ‘race’. ...

"cba to check the spelling" investigating parser performance on discussion forum posts
(2010)
Foster, Jennifer
Abstract:
We evaluate the Berkeley parser on text from an online discussion forum. We evaluate the parser output with and without gold tokens and spellings (using Sparseval and Parseval), and we compile a list of problematic phenomena for this domain. The Parseval f-score for a small development set is 77.56. This increases to 80.27 when we apply a set of simple transformations to the input sentences and to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) training sections.

"En cada linaje el deterioro ejerce su dominio": an examination and evaluation of the domesticating versus foreignisation translation strategy as proposed by Lawrence Venuti in light of the English language translation of 'La ciudad y los perros' by Mario Vargas Llosa
(1997)
Horgan, Nicola Patricia
Abstract:
This thesis is an examination of the field of translation theory through practical application. The aim of the thesis is to provide a detailed and accurate account of the history of and effectiveness of the translation strategy proposed by Lawrence Venuti - namely Fluent versus Resistant translation strategy. The translation strategy will be exemplified by an examination of a published translation of ‘La ciudad y los perros’ by Mario Vargas Llosa translated by Lysander Kemp, and a comparison with my own translation. Both of the texts will be examined under the headings detailed in Venuti’s proposed translation strategy. The thesis consists of four mam chapters, the first being an examination of the various translation theories preceding Venuti’s proposed translation strategy, tracing the development of translation theory as a practical science across various schools of thought through time, culminating in a detailed exposition of Venuti’s proposed translation strategy and thus the ...

"From Here to the Rest of the World": Crime, class and labour in David Simon's Baltimore
(2013)
Sweeney, Sheamus
Abstract:
Despite the systemic societal critique apparent in The Wire, David Simon rejects the label of marxist. However he defines himself, he is worthy of analysis as a dramatist, by virtue of the relative coherence of the left-leaning arguments expressed within his work. This thesis explores, and attempts to define this worldview, through analysis of three dramas based in Baltimore, Maryland. Homicide: life on the street and The Corner are based on books of narrative journalism, respectively authored and co-authored by David Simon. The books also inform the narrative of The Wire. I attempt to track the worldview expressed through their intersecting representations of crime, class and the nature of work. All dramas are critiqued from the perspective of textual analysis rooted in literary and television studies, and influenced by, but not limited to, left critical theory. As a secondary thread, I consider the historical and political economic context of US television, and limitations placed...

"I'm a doctor for God's sake" The GP as Manager: A multi-theory perspective
(2014)
O'Riordan, Chris
Abstract:
The primary care sector is nationally and globally recognised as being important in the efficient and effective delivery of healthcare. A key component of this sector is the General Practitioner, or GP. As a clinical professional, the GP has a traditional focus on the needs of patients. While this may constitute their primary role, GPs are also in business, creating other needs as well. Therefore, the GP – and owner specifically – is not just a clinician but is also a business manager. While previous studies have examined this latter role empirically, further theory-informed research is needed to acquire a deeper understanding of both the role itself and the context within which it exists. This study is based on semi-structured interviews with 35 GPs, thematically analysed and underpinned by literature from management, professions and role theory. The research finds that GPs manage principally at an operational oversight level, where the owner is a dominant force and in close contr...

"I’m Eating a Sandwich in Glasgow": Modeling locations with tweets
(2011)
Kinsella, Sheila; Murdock, Vanessa; OHare, Neil
Abstract:
Social media such as Twitter generate large quantities of data about what a person is thinking and doing in a partic- ular location. We leverage this data to build models of locations to improve our understanding of a user’s geographic context. Understanding the user’s geographic context can in turn enable a variety of services that allow us to present information, recommend businesses and services, and place advertisements that are relevant at a hyper-local level. In this paper we create language models of locations using coordinates extracted from geotagged Twitter data. We model locations at varying levels of granularity, from the zip code to the country level. We measure the accuracy of these models by the degree to which we can predict the location of an individual tweet, and further by the accuracy with which we can predict the location of a user. We find that we can meet the performance of the industry standard tool for pre- dicting both the tweet and the user at the country,...

"Resigned to take the bill with its defects" : The Catholic Church and the third Home Rule bill
(2014)
Ó Corráin, Daithí
Abstract:
For the Irish Roman Catholic hierarchy the possibility of Irish self-government in 1912-14 presented both potential benefits and lurking dangers. Their responses to the third home rule bill and the deepening crisis of 1913 and 1914 were conditioned by two overarching factors. The first was their level of confidence in the leadership of the Irish Party. The second applied chiefly to the Ulster bishops: the prospect of exclusion from an Irish parliament imperilled their religious and educational interests. By the onset of the First World War, the spectre of partition had stretched their trust in the Irish Party and support for a Home Rule settlement to breaking point.

"Such friends": effects of extensive cluster group interaction on the development of creative writers
(1997)
Donnelly, Kathleen V
Abstract:
Four writers and their associated cluster groups were studied through content analysis of numerous biographies. These include W. B. Yeats and the Irish Literary Renaissance (1897-1906), Virginia Woolf and the Bloomsbury Group (1907-1915), Gertrude Stein and the American Expatriates in Paris (1921-1930), and Dorothy Parker and the Algonquin Round Table (1919-1928). The groups were analysed with reference to the social psychological research on group roles, structure, and interaction patterns; climate, goals and values; and cohesiveness. The writers’ development was analysed with reference to identity, differentiation, productivity and risk-taking. The analyses of all four groups-despite their diversity of membership, nationality and location-revealed remarkably similar structuring of roles and interaction patterns. The core of each group consisted of the writer and a co-dependent who hosted the group and supported the writer. Closely associated with these two roles were three other...

"Tha' sounds like me arse!": a comparison of the translation of expletives in two German translations of Roddy Doyle's "The commitments"
(2009)
Ghassempur, Susanne
Abstract:
The present study is a quantitative as well as qualitative investigation into the translation of swearwords in the dialogue of two German versions of Roddy Doyle's The Commitments (1987). The novel was first translated into German in 1990 by Oliver Huzly and retranslated in 2001 by Renate Orth-Guttmann. The main question of interest in the present study may be formulated as follows: 'How do two different translators deal with swearwords in the dialogue of an Irish-English literary work and what are the results of their decisions?' More precisely, the main primary impression was that Oliver Huzly had a more source-text oriented approach when translating swearwords and did not consider their functions in Irish-English colloquial speech. An initial quantitative analysis comprises a comparison of frequencies and distribution of swearwords in the source text and its two translations. It was revealed that, from a quantitative point of view, the two German versions appear to...

"They blew up the best portion of our city and ... it is their duty to replace it" : Compensation and reconstruction in the aftermath of the 1916 Rising
(2014)
Ó Corráin, Daithí
Abstract:
The most visible consequence of the 1916 Rising was the destruction of Sackville Street and the adjoining thoroughfares. Witnesses likened the ruined city centre to a scene from the Western Front. The damage resulted in significant material loss for the citizens and property owners of Dublin. This article will explain why the British government accepted liability for loss of property of all kinds from buildings to personal items. It will describe the nature of the compensation process, municipal concerns about town planning and reinstatement in an improving style, and the material impact of the restitution on the city and its people.

"Une représentation une fois pour toutes et pour toujours"? Un cirque passe de Modiano et Des gens qui passent de Nahum
(2012)
Cooke, Dervila
Abstract:

“Ambiguous State of Being”: identity construction in contemporary Arab-American (post-9/11) poetry
(2016)
Baz Radwan, Omar
Abstract:
This study examines poetry written by Americans of Arab descent and the manifold ways in which ―national identity construction and belonging in terms of Race, Cultural Politics, and Feminism are portrayed in the discourse of various prominent, contemporary Arab-American poets. Using literary imagology as a methodological tool, the study investigates the various representations of identity/alterity expressed in these works. As such, the primary focus of the study is on the image of the Arab community in post-9/11 America, and the various cultural concerns of the spected community as portrayed in the literature (i.e. from an aesthetic, subjective perspective). Moreover, this study addresses the subsequent tensions and exilic notions encountered in contemporary Arab-American poetic discourse in its attempt to redefine and invalidate the image of being Arab, and by extrapolation, Muslim, in America after the incidents of the 9/11 attacks. This research focuses on sociopolitical readings...

“Braxton Hick’s” or the birth of a new era? Tracing the development of Ireland’s abortion laws in respect of European Court of Human Rights Jurisprudence
(2011)
Daly, Brenda
Abstract:
In Ireland, Article 40.3.3° of Bunreacht na hÉireann (the Irish Constitution) guarantees the right to life of the unborn child and the equal right to life of the mother. Abortion in Ireland is permissible only where there is a real and substantial risk to the mother’s own life. Since Ireland became a signatory to the European Convention on Human Rights in 1950, there have been concerns that it could result in Ireland being compelled to introduce a right to abortion. This article commences with a review of the extant law on abortion in Ireland, tracing the Constitutional protection afforded to the unborn child. The article will discuss the impact of the European Court of Human Rights’ jurisprudence in regard to access to abortion and to information on abortion services in Ireland in an effort to ascertain if it really has resulted in a radical change to Irish abortion laws. As such, it will also be necessary to examine the more recent decisions of the ECtHR such as Tysiac v. Po...

“Calixarenes as ionophores in ion- selective electrodes: The Past and The Future of Chemical Sensing”
(2014)
Diamond, Dermot
Abstract:
This paper focuses on the context of early research into the use of calixarenes as ionophores in ion-selective electrodes and explains the basis for their exquisite selectivity in terms of the 3D arrangement of polar binding sites [1]. However, in order to make chemical sensors with long effective lifetimes, this polar cavity must be associated with an overall non-polar molecular character, in order to ensure that that the binding sites do not leach rapidly into aqueous sample media. Furthermore, while selectivity demands a significant binding constant (at least for the primary target ion), this cannot be too large, or binding becomes irreversible, leading to device failure. I will also review the trend towards solid-state sensor configurations compatible with printing technologies and low-cost mass production. To achieve this goal, the electrode internal-filling solution must be replaced with a solid material capable of emulating the mixed conductance behaviour that (in convent...

“If you went out it would stick”: Irish children’s learning in their local environments
(2011)
Pike, Susan
Abstract:
This paper reports on the findings of a research project investigating children’s experiences of their local environments. Children’s experiences of spaces and places and the interaction of such experiences and their learning were investigated, using mixed research methods, informed by phenomenological and participatory methodologies. Through these activities including discussion, interviews and drawing, children described how they experienced affordances of spaces, places and people in a range of ways. The children also revealed varied and dynamic attitudes to their local environments. Children’s use and opinions of the environment were influenced by temporal, physical, social and economic factors. As well as expressing that such local experiences enhanced their current lives, the children also described how experiences in their local environment contributed to the different areas of their development, including their learning. For most children, such experiences emanated from outs...

“It’s the one-size-fits-all approach”: differing experiences of formal dementia home and community care in Ireland.
(2015)
Hopper, Louise; Joyce, Rachael; Stephan, Astrid; Bieber, Anja; Irving, Kate; Verhey, Frans
Abstract:
Background: Access to formal dementia care services varies widely within and across European countries. This paper presents Irish data from one study within the Access to Timely Formal Care (Actifcare) JPND-funded research project. The study explored the personal experiences, and perceived barriers or facilitators in accessing formal home- and community-based health and social care systems from the perspectives of people with dementia. Methods: An exploratory qualitative design with purposive sampling was used. Two focus groups were conducted with people with dementia already using, or having previously tried to access, formal care. The first took place with older participants who attended a dementia-specific day centre in a central Dublin neighbourhood (n=3; mean age = 83.7). The second comprised of younger participants with early onset dementia from urban and rural locations in Ireland (n=4, mean age = 57.3). Discussions followed an agreed structure, were tape-recorded, transcrib...

“Mirror, mirror, here I stand”: the representation of women in the Vietnamese translation of Irish chick lit
(2016)
Nguyen, Nhat Tuan
Abstract:
The present study investigates the translation of the representation of women in Chick Lit written by Irish writers. The study makes use of a set of Irish contemporary women-centered fictional texts written by Marian Keyes, Cecelia Ahern and Cathy Kelly and their Vietnamese translations. The research argues that the representation of women in the translations is a synthesis of paratextual elements, cultural references, and cultural gender-behaviour norms associated with women. Applying the framework of Descriptive Translation Studies and using Toury’s (1995) coupled-pairs method, the research aims to investigate the translation of the representation of women in Chick Lit in Vietnamese translation and observe the translation strategies used in the translation process. The translated representation in this thesis was analysed from the Vietnamese concept of Four Virtues namely diligence, self-representation, speech, and courtesy. This approach has revealed subtle differences between th...

“Reframing” the postwar moment: the impact of UNSCR 1325 (2000) on gender relations in post-conflict states – the case of Sierra Leone
(2015)
Sicard, Aurelie
Abstract:
This thesis analyses the impact of UNSCR 1325 on post-conflict states using Sierra Leone as a case study. It employs the concept of the “postwar moment” defined as a period of fluidity with the potential to be a time of change, particularly in gender relations. This period has historically been negative for women. UNSCR 1325, which implicitly recalls this negative moment, has been prominent in international discourse on post-conflict reconstruction since its creation in 2000. It is credited with improving the position of women in conflict and in peace processes, and by implication, in post-conflict reconstruction, in this way ameliorating the impact of the postwar moment on women. The study uses a word-counting analysis of two Sierra Leonean newspapers covering 2002-2008 and of national policies documents from 2004-2012 to examine elite discourse on gender. The analysis uses frames drawn from a word-counting analysis of 1325 and related texts. The thesis finds that 1325 has had virt...
