A Monte Carlo Investigation in External Beam Radiotherapy
(2011)
Conneely, Elaine
Abstract:
Monte Carlo techniques have been shown to be the most accurate method of modelling radiation transport and dose deposition. With increasingly complex radiotherapy techniques being employed in the continuing fight against cancer, Monte Carlo techniques provide a de finitive method to assess the accuracy of these techniques and the accuracy of the procedures used to test them. This thesis established a method to tune a linear accelerator model, in an efficient process. This model was then employed to examine two techniques used currently in the measurement of the absolute dose for the quality assurance of individual patient IMRT plans.

A national general practice census: characteristics of rural general practices
(2001)
Nic Gabhainn, Saoirse; Murphy, Andrew W.; Kelleher, Cecily
Abstract:
Objectives. The aim of the present study was to describe, using a national census, the characteristics of rural general practices and compare these with city and town general practices. Methods. A previously piloted, anonymous but linked, questionnaire was issued to all GPs in Ireland. A liaison network covering the country was developed to increase the response rate. Respondents were asked to designate the location of their main surgery as being city (>20 000 population), town (>5000) or rural (<5000). Each responding practice was asked to nominate one partner to complete a specific section on practice information. Results. Completed individual questionnaires were returned from 2093 GPs (86% response rate). Information on 1429 practice centres was provided; 488 (34%) of these were designated as city, 405 (28%) as town and 536 (38%) as rural. Rural practices reported fewer private patients (P < 0.001) and more socio-economically deprived patients (P < 0.001) than th...

A novel hybrid filter for the treatment of septic tank effluent.
(2006)
Rodgers, Michael; Healy, Mark G.; Prendergast, John
Abstract:
Intermittent sand filtration is a common and effective method for treating septic tank effluent. However, if the loading rate is too high, clogging and ponding of the sand filter surface layer can occur due to the accumulation of excessive biomass and the deposition of suspended solids. This ponding limits the practicality of sand filtration as it makes it necessary to take the filter out of service for maintenance. The objective of this study was to develop and test, on-site, a new hybrid filter system that would reduce the risk of clogging at an organic loading rate substantially greater than the maximum recommended loading rate for intermittent sand filters. The system comprised a 0.6 m deep horizontal flow biofilm reactor (HFBR) over a 0.85 m deep stratified sand filter. The HFBR consisted of a stack of 20 horizontal corrugated polyvinyl chloride (PVC) sheets, at 32 mm vertical spacings. The sheets were arranged so that the wastewater flowed over and back along alternate sheets ...

Abstract:
Background: Tuberculosis (TB) is the leading cause of death worldwide from a single infectious agent. An ability to detect the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTC) in clinical material while simultaneously differentiating its members is considered important. This allows for the gathering of epidemiological information pertaining to the prevalence, transmission and geographical distribution of the MTC, including those MTC members associated with zoonotic TB infection in humans. Also differentiating between members of the MTC provides the clinician with inherent MTC specific drug susceptibility profiles to guide appropriate chemotherapy. Methodology/Principal Findings: The aim of this study was to develop a multiplex real-time PCR assay using novel molecular targets to identify and differentiate between the phylogenetically closely related M. bovis, M. bovis BCG and M. caprae. The lpqT gene was explored for the collective identification of M. bovis, M. bovis BCG and M. caprae, ...

A Paradoxical Perspective on Contradictions in Agile Software Development
(2008)
Wang, Xiaofeng; O'Conchuir, Eoin; Vidgen, Richard
Abstract:
An ongoing debate on agile methods focuses on the contradictions in software development, especially responding to change vs. following a plan, and people vs. processes. Unlike the ¿either-or¿ perspective adopted in the existing agile literature, this paper introduces a paradoxical view on the contradictions in agile software development and uses two agile processes to illustrate it, arguing that a paradoxical perspective can help to gain a better understanding of the nature of and ways of dealing with the contradictions in agile software development. Taking a paradoxical perspective on responding to change vs. following a plan, and people vs. processes, this paper reveals that an agile process is a planning-driven process geared to responding to change, and it is a process that provides a supporting structure for people to learn and to improve their competences.

A Primer on the Tools and Concepts of Comutable Economics.?
(2004)
Velupillai, K. Vela.
Abstract:
Computability theory came into being as a result of Hilbert s attempts to meet Brouwer s challenges, from an intuitionistc and constructive standpoint, to formalism as a foundation for mathematical practice. Viewed this way, con- structive mathematics should be one vision of computability theory. However, there are fundamental di¤erences between computability theory and construc- tive mathematics: the Church-Turing thesis is a disciplining criterion in the former and not in the latter; and classical logic - particularly, the law of the excluded middle - is not accepted in the latter but freely invoked in the former, especially in proving universal negative propositions. In Computable Economics an eclectic approach is adopted where the main criterion is numerical content for economic entities. In this sense both the computable and the constructive traditions are freely and indiscriminately invoked and utilised in the formaliza- tion of economic entities. Some of the mathematical meth...

A Privacy-enhanced Usage Control Model
(2010)
Slawomir, Grzonkowski
Abstract:
Recently we have observed a growing demand for secure technologies for e-commerce that do not put customers at risk of identity theft. We have also experienced the advent of Web 2.0 which has led to new business models and which has changed the way users interact with the Web. This thesis proposes a set of strategies and enhancements towards providing improved security and privacy in such new settings. We introduce a novel concept: Fair Rights Management (FRM). It can be classified as a usage control solution. FRM enables a flexible way of managing digital content. There was a need to provide additional security extensions to keep such a flexible model applicable. Thus, in our approach we take advantage of trust obtained from social networks. This is also the reason why we created an efficient zero-knowledge proof protocol that is lightweight enough to be deployed within existing web-applications. The proposed protocol is also successfully integrated with Semantic Web architectu...

A process evaluation of the National drug awareness campaign.
(2008)
Sixsmith, Jane; Nic Gabhainn, Saoirse
Abstract:
In response to the National Drugs Strategy 2001-2008 a national mass media awareness campaign was undertaken from May 2003 to December 2005 with the aim of highlighting the facts about drug misuse and increasing awareness of drugs problems. The campaign slogan was 'Drugs - there are answers' and messages were disseminated via electronic and hard copy communication mechanisms and a community-based initiative. While the mass media may have been used extensively to communicate drug misuse prevention and harm reduction messages the effect that these campaigns have on audiences has long been debated and warrants evaluation to inform future developments.

Abstract:
In this document, we present the challenges faced to develop a plug-in for Protégé that supports requirements for the NEPOMUK1 Representational Language (NRL). NRL is a language built on top of RDF/S and although it was designed to fulfill requirements for the NEPOMUK Social Semantic Desktop project, it is available for global use due to its novel improvements over the RDF model and given its independence of the domain for which it was initially designed.

Abstract:
The SIOC Ontology can be used to express information from the online community sites in a machine readable form using RDF. This rich data structure allows us to easily analyse and extract social relations from these community sites. We use SIOC information to analyse the social relations between users through the content that they create. We introduce metrics for social neighbourhood and social reputation, formally expressed as SPARQL queries over SIOC data. Finally, we demonstrate these algorithms in our Social SIOC Explorer prototype.

A quiver presentation for Solomon's descent algebra
(2009)
Pfeiffer, Götz
Abstract:
The descent algebra S(W) is a subalgebra of the group algebra of a finite Coxeter group W, which supports a homomorphism with nilpotent kernel and commutative image in the character ring of W. Thus S(W) is a basic algebra, and as such it has a presentation as a quiver with relations. Here we construct S(W) as a quotient of a subalgebra of the path algebra of the Hasse diagram of the Boolean lattice of all subsets of S, the set of simple reflections in W. From this construction we obtain some general information about the quiver of S(W) and an algorithm for the construction of a quiver presentation for the descent algebra S(W) of any given finite Coxeter group W.

A reliable method for detecting complexed DNA in vitro

Abstract:
Quantification of eluted nucleic acids is a critical parameter in characterizing biomaterial based gene-delivery systems. The most commonly used method is to assay samples with an intercalating fluorescent dye such as PicoGreen®. However, this technique was developed for unbound DNA and the current trend in gene delivery is to condense DNA with transfection reagents, which interfere with intercalation. Here, for the first time, the DNA was permanently labeled with the fluorescent dye Cy5 prior to complexation, an alternative technique hypothesized to allow quantification of both bound and unbound DNA. A comparison of the two methods was performed by quantifying the elution of six different varieties of DNA complexes from a model biomaterial (collagen) scaffold. After seven days of elution, the PicoGreen® assay only allowed detection of three types of complexes (those formed using Lipofectin¿ and two synthesised copolymers). However, the Cy5 fluorescent labeling technique enabled det...

Abstract:
Although ethical issues related to the Internet has been a widely debated topic, little has been written on subtle ethical questions such as the exploitation of Web technologies to inhibit customer service. Increasingly, some firms are using Websites to create distance between them and their customer base in specific areas of their operations while simultaneously developing excellence in sales transaction completion via self-service. This paper examines the low-cost, Web-based self-service airline industry in Ireland.

Abstract:
This paper presents an overview of a number of classical face recognition techniques, including an assessment of their suitability for applications in real-time embedded systems such as digital cameras, and a generalized discussion of the training requirements for different face recognition techniques. Also, an introduction to face recognition approaches based on hidden Markov models (HMM) is made, and their advantages and benefits are shown, particularly their ability to provide acceptable levels of accurate recognition for unseen collections of facial images. Finally, a detailed description/implementation of a working HMM test bed is done, together with a presentation of some preliminary results.

A review of phosphorus and sediment release from Irish tillage soils, the methods used to quantify losses and the current state of mitigation practice.
(2012)
Regan, J.T.; Healy, Mark G.
Abstract:
Throughout the European Union (EU), agricultural soils with high phosphorus (P) status due to a surplus input of fertiliser have been identified as a landscape pressure impacting on water quality. In the Republic of Ireland, approximately 80% of agricultural land is devoted to grass, 11% to rough grazing, and 9% to arable cereal and crop production. Consequently, the majority of erosion research has focused on quantifying nutrient and sediment losses from grassland. Tillage soils are, however, more susceptible to erosion than grassland soils and, in general, have higher levels of soil P. This paper reviews the current state of research, and the regulatory regime relating to diffuse P and sediment loss for tillage soils. It identifies the key threats to soil quality associated with cultivated soils, and proposes the targeting and remediation of critical source areas for effective mitigation of P losses from tillage soils. A multi-scaled approach is recommended, in which catchment and...

A review of remediation and control systems for the treatment of agricultural wastewater in Ireland to satisfy the requirements of the Water Framework Directive
(2008)
Fenton, O.; Healy, Mark G.; Schulte, R.P.O.
Abstract:
In Ireland, agricultural activities have been identified as major sources of nutrient input to receiving waters and it has been estimated that these activities contribute 75.3% of the nitrogen (N) and 33.4% of the phosphorus (P) in these waters. Strategy at European level focuses on the prevention of nutrient loss by improved farm management. However, it does not focus on nutrient remediation or incidental nutrient loss of farmyard manures to surface and groundwater. This review describes the impact of agriculture on the environment in Ireland and examines emerging technologies for agricultural wastewater treatment. An integrated approach at pre-treatment and field stages for nitrate (NO3) remediation and P control is recommended.

A review of the international literature on health promotion competencies: identifying frameworks and core competencies
(2009)
Barry, Margaret M.
Abstract:
Building a competent health promotion workforce with the necessary knowledge and skills to develop, implement and evaluate health promotion policies and practice is fundamental to mainstreaming and sustaining health promotion action. This paper reviews the international literature on competencies in health promotion, examines the competencies developed to date, identifies the methods used in their development and considers what can be learned from the experience of others when establishing international core competencies. The paper considers the advantages and disadvantages of employing a competency approach and the extent to which the competencies identified to date can enhance the quality of practice and update the skill set required to work within changing social, cultural and political contexts.
