A Stochastic Model of the Visual Evoked Response

A Stochastic Model of the Visual Evoked Response
(2000)
Ward, Tomas
Abstract:
A stochastic model for visual evoked response generation is proposed based on a compound neurological generator approach. Participation of individual generators is stochastically modelled in a physiologically realistic manner that captures the inherent variability in latencies and amplitudes associated with the component phases of the response. The model is invertible such that decomposition of real responses to reveal individual unit generator participation is possible and suggests that conventional averaging techniques may provide a truer picture of the visual evoked response than previously thought.

A Strategy for Fair Coexistence of Loss and Delay-Based Congestion Control Algorithms

Abstract:
Delay-based TCP variants have attracted a large amount of attention in the networking community because of their ability to efficiently use network resources, control queuing delays, exhibit virtually zero packet loss, etc. One major issue that discourages the wider deployment of delay-based TCP variants is their inability to co-exist fairly with standard loss-based TCP. In this note we propose a simple mechanism that allows delayand loss-based (AIMD) TCP flows to compete fairly with each other. Further, our approach ensures that delay-based flows automatically (and swiftly) switch to a low-delay regime if no lossbased flows are present. We provide analytical and simulation results to validate presented algorithm.

A Study of Heat Transfer and Heat Flow Asymmetry through Water in the presence of the Density Maximum
(2007)
Mooney, Priscilla A.
Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with heat flow asymmetry through composites of water and aqueous solutions. Central to this exploration are the behaviour of heat transfer in the vicinity of the density maximum and the behaviour of the temperature of maximum density of aqueous solutions. Both of these topics are investigated by cooling a rectangular enclosure of the test fluid in a quasi-steady state manner. During cooling, the temperature at select points within the liquid is monitored and the flow of heat at both isothermal walls is measured. As the liquid cools through its density maximum the normal single-cell convection that occurs in the presence of a horizontal temperature gradient changes to a double cell configuration in the vicinity of the density maximum. This transition manifests itself in changes in the horizontal temperature profile across the cavity and in the rate of cooling of the fluid. A measurement technique to study the behaviour of the temperature of maximum density of...

A Study of the Change in the Temperature of Maximum Density of Water and Aqueous Solutions as a function of Pressure
(2010)
Cotter, Gerard
Abstract:
The aim of this research is to study the shift in the temperature of maximum density of water and aqueous solutions as a function of pressure. One of the many anomalous properties of water is that it passes through a maximum in density in the liquid state. In order to accurately measure the temperature of maximum density (Tmd), convective flow is monitored in a rectangular container containing the fluid. A temperature gradient is held across the chamber and it is cooled and heated in a quasi-steady state manner. A double cell convection pattern forms in the vicinity of the density maximum. This double cell is tracked by monitoring the temperature at selected points in the fluid. The change in temperature of maximum density due to concentration and applied pressure can be investigated using this technique. At a pressure of one atmosphere, this density maximum occurs in pure water at a temperature of 3.98 C. It is known that the temperature of maximum density decreases as the pressur...

A Study of the Development and Significance of the Idea of the 'Image of God' from its Origins in Genesis through its Historical-Philosophical Interpretations to Contemporary Concerns in Science and Phenomenology
(2010)
Gurmin, John Haydn
Abstract:
This thesis investigates the development and significance of the idea of the human being as made in the 'image of God', from its origin in the book of Genesis through its historical and philosophical unfolding. There are, however, many interpretations of what this means, giving rise to problems regarding what precisely is being conveyed by this idea, The issue of the existence of God became particularly problematic after Hume and Feuerbach's scepticism and, in more recent times, in light of criticisms stemming from Darwin's theory of evolution and by some neo-Darwinists who claim to prove in particular that God does not exist. This study argues that the natural-scientific theory of evolution does not, in fact, prove the non-existence of God. It also argues that the phenomenological method of enquiry is a more appropriate method for addressing the question of what it is to be a human individual made in the 'image of God'. Because the idea of the 'im...

A Study of the Non-linear Variation in the Temperature of the Water Density Anomaly as a Function of Solute Concentration
(2010)
Stewart, Allan
Abstract:
In this study an experimental technique which permits detailed study of the temperature of maximum density of pure water and aqueous solutions is presented. The density of water as a function of temperature passes through a maximum at 3.98C. This temperature of maximum density (Tmd) changes when solutes are added to the water. This investigation is carried out by cooling a rectangular chamber containing a test fluid. Throughout the tests a 4°C temperature gradient is maintained. As the test fluid is cooled through its density maximum the normal single cell convection that occurs in the presence of a temperature gradient is replaced by a double cell. Monitoring this double cell is the basis of all tests carried out in this study. For solutes such as ionic salts and sugars, the temperature of maximum density decreases in a linear manner as the solute concentration increases (‘Despretz law’). It had been noted, however, in previous work that for monohydric alcohols such as methanol and...

A Study of the Prediction Requirements in Real-Time Control of Wave Energy Converters
(2012)
Fusco, Francesco; Ringwood, John
Abstract:
It is widely acknowledged that real-time control of wave energy converters (WECs) can benefit from prediction of the excitation force. The prediction requirements (how far ahead into the future do we need to predict?) and the achievable predictions (how far ahead can we predict?) are quantified when unconstrained reactive control is implemented. The fundamental properties of the floating system that influence the length of the required forecasting horizon, as well as the achievable prediction, are characterized. The possibility of manipulating the control, based on prior knowledge of the wave spectral distribution, is also proposed for the reduction of the prediction requirements, such that they are within the range of predictability offered by simple stochastic predictors. The proposed methodology is validated on real wave data and heaving buoys with different geometries.

A Study on Data Aggregation and Reliability in Managing Wireless Sensor Networks
(2007)
Brown, S.; Sreenan, C.J.
Abstract:
Using data aggregation to reduce power consumption is a well studied area. In this paper we show a new result: data aggregation can also be used to increase reliability. In scenarios where status is being collected from every node (e.g. network management), one measure of reliability is the completeness (nodes included). Using some of the power savings from aggregation to increase the retransmission limit for aggregated data gives significant improvements in completeness. The contribution of this paper is in providing a detailed comparison of the completeness and energy efficiency for aggregated and nonaggregated data. Results, derived by numerical analysis and simulation, show that with data aggregation and increased retransmission limits, reliability can be substantially improved, while still saving power. These results are applicable to designing network management protocols for Wireless Sensor Networks, as well as for other scenarios where high completeness is required for netwo...

A study on Prediction Requirements in time-domain Control of Wave Energy Converters
(2010)

Abstract:
Wave energy converters (WECs) based on oscillating bodies or oscillating water columns would earn huge benets from a time-domain control on a wave by wave basis. Such a control would allow ecient energy extraction over a wider range of frequencies than what could possibly be achieved when no real-time control is adopted, thus increasing the economical attractiveness of the WECs. Almost every control strategy that showed some potential, however, suers from the problem that future knowledge of the incident wave elevation, or wave excitation force, is required. In this paper a general control framework for oscillating WECs is presented and a methodology to understand and quantify the wave excitation force prediction requirements, along with the achievable prediction accuracy, is discussed. The two features are compared against each other and linked to the dynamic characteristics of a device. Along with the qualitative discussion, the methodology is applied to some heaving cylinders whe...

A Study on Short-Term Sea Profile Prediction for Wave Energy Applications
(2009)
Fusco, F.; Ringwood, J.
Abstract:
Control of wave energy converters requires knowledge of some seconds of the future behavior of certain physical quantities, in order to approach optimality. That is why short time prediction of the oncoming waves is a crucial problem in the field of wave energy, whose solution could bring great benefits to the effectiveness of the devices and to their economical viability. This study is proposed as a preliminary approach to cope with this necessity, where wave forecasts are computed on the basis of past observations collected at the prediction site itself. Working on single point measurements allows the treatment of the wave elevation as a pure time series, so that a wide range of well established techniques from the stochastic time series modelling and forecasting field may be exploited. Among the proposed solutions there are some cyclical models, based on an explicit representation of the a priori knowledge about the real process. It is then shown how a lot simpler and more effect...

A Suitable MAC Protocol for Transmit-Only Sensor Nodes in a Housing Community Wireless Network
(2007)
Maloco, John; McLoone, Seamus
Abstract:
This paper investigates the development of a suitable Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol for a housing community wireless network that consists of both wireless infrastructural mesh nodes and wireless sensor nodes. In this network, transmit-only sensor nodes are employed in order to obtain a low cost, easy to deploy and low power solution. However, such sensor nodes have no way of verifying successful data transfer and it is, therefore, imperative that the associated MAC protocol provides a high level of confidence for transferring this data. In this paper, we examine methods of packaging and transmitting sensor node data in order to obtain such a MAC protocol for the aforementioned housing community wireless network. Microchipâs rfPIC is used as the platform for the sensor node. Some preliminary analysis and results are presented within.

Abstract:
Anatomical intra operative deformation is a major limitation of accuracy in image guided neurosurgery. Approaches to quantify these deforamations based on 3D reconstruction of surfaces have been introduced. For accurate quantification of surface deformation, a robust surface registration method is required. In this paper, we propose a new surface registration for video-based analysis of intraoperative brain deformations. This registration method includes three terms: the first term is related to image intensities, the second to Euclidean distance and the third to anatomical landmarks continuously tracked in 2D video. This new surface registration method can be used with any cortical surface textured point cloud computed by stereoscopic or laser range approaches. We have shown the global method, including textured point cloud reconstruction, had a precision within 2 millimeters, which is within the usual rigid registration error of the neuronavigation system before deformations.

Abstract:
During 2002-2004, a survey of entomopathogenic nematodes was conducted for the first time in Iran throughout the three provinces in the north-west of the country. Soil samples were tested for the presence of steinernematid and heterorhabditid nematodes by baiting with Galleria mellonella larvae. Of the 833 soil samples studied 27 were positive for entomopathogenic nematodes (3.2%), with 17 (2.0%) containing Heterorhabditis and ten (1.2%) Steinernema isolates. Morphological and molecular studies were carried out to characterise isolates. The Heterorhabditis isolates were identified as Heterorhabditis bacteriophora and Steinernema as Steinernema carpocapsae, S. bicornutum and S. feltiae. Heterorhabditis bacteriophora was the most common species, which was isolated from 17 sites across the three provinces. Steinernema feltiae was the most common species of Steinernema, which was isolated from eight sites but in only two provinces. Steinernema carpocapsae and S. bicornutum were each iso...

A Test for the Number of Factors in an Approximate Factor Model

Abstract:
An important issue in applications of multifactor models of asset returns is the appropriate number of factors. Most extant tests for the number of factors are valid only for strict factor models, in which diversifiable returns are uncorrelated across assets. In this paper we develop a test statistic to determine the number of factors in an approximate factor model of asset returns, which does not require that diversifiable components of returns be uncorrelated across assets. We find evidence for one to six pervasive factors in the cross-section of New York Stock Exchange and American Stock Exchange stock returns.

A Transfer of Sequence Function Via Equivalence in a Connectionist Network

Abstract:
Connectionist networks may provide useful models of stimulus equivalence and transfer of function phenomena. Such models have been applied to a range of behavioral tasks and have demonstrated transfers of function via equivalence relations following appropriate training, with networks accurately simulating the behavior of human subjects. In the current study, a connectionist network was pretrained on a series of equivalence and sequence tasks to simulate the preexperimental experience of an adult subject. It was then exposed to the equivalent of six conditional discriminations, and was tested for the formation of three 3-member equivalence classes (corresponding to A 1-A2-A3, B1-B2-B3, C1-C2-C3). It was subsequently trained to produce a pair of four part sequences (corresponding to B1 -+B2-+Ct1 -+B3 and B3-+ B2-+Ct2-+ B1 , where Ct1 and Ct2 represented contextual cues) before being tested for transfer, through equivalence, of the sequence responses to the C stimuli. Following approp...

Abstract:
We present a universal Dirac operator for noncommutative spin and spinc bundles over fuzzy complex projective spaces. We give an explicit construction of these bundles, which are described in terms of finite dimensional matrices, calculate the spectrum and explicitly exhibit the Dirac eigenspinors. To our knowledge the spinc spectrum for CPn with n ≥ 3 is new.

A wavelet transfer model for time series forecasting
(2007)
Fay, Damien; Ringwood, John
Abstract:
This paper is concerned with the case of an exogenous system in which a model is required to forecast a periodic output time series using a causal input. A novel approach is developed in which the wavelet packet transform is taken of both the dependent time series and causal input. This results in two sets of basis dictionaries and requires two bases to be chosen. It is proposed that the best bases to choose are those which maximize the mutual information. Input selection is then implemented by eliminating those coefficients of the selected input basis with low mutual information. As an example, a model is constructed to forecast short-term electrical demand.

A Woman’s Model For Social Welfare Reform
(2003)
Murphy, Mary
Abstract:
The National Women’s Council of Ireland (NWCI) commissioned this research because of its concern that the social welfare system continues to deny women full independence. Even now, in 2003, the system reinforces a notion of women as adult dependants, rather than as individuals entitled to benefits in their own right. Furthermore, the social welfare system fails to give adequate recognition to women’s unpaid caring work. The consequences of this failure are the higher-than-average risks of poverty experienced by certain categories of women who are, or have been, engaged in caring work for long periods, particularly lone parents and older women. We are seeking in this research to advance a model of social welfare reform that promotes the economic independence of women within the social welfare code and enables individual (non-derived) rights to social welfare. The NWCI strongly advocates a rights approach that recognises economic independence within the family as an essential precurso...

Abstract:
Abstract Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore the benefits of a writing support programme in developing the skills and motivation of librarians to write for academic publication. Design/methodology/approach – A brief review of the literature is presented. The model developed and implemented by this author is outlined. Findings from a survey of participants are discussed. Research limitations/implications – The formal programme commenced in 2007. The publication process takes time, particularly in the case of peer-reviewed journals. This is exploratory work. It will take time to build up a body of information and a community of librarians writing for publication. Initial evidence indicates there is significant value to the programme. Practical implications – The model is transferable and could help in building skills and confidence in academic writing. In addition academic writing could serve as a bridge between lecturing and library staff, addressing issues of common co...

Abandon Hope All Ye Who Enter Here? (N217-11)

Abstract:
Hope plays an important role in all individuals’ lives both today and in the future. While hope and hopelessness are important concepts and the subjects of much theorizing in psychology, theology, philosophy, political science, nursing, as well as in literature and the arts, it is absent from economics. This silence on hope is notable since hope is fundamentally at the centre of choice, especially intertemporal choice, which is at the centre of economic analysis. To place hope at the centre of intertemporal choice, it is important to clearly define what hope is and what it is not. What hope is not is constant. Hope is not optimism; hope is not unfounded dreams divorced from reality; hope is not irrational. I distil what hope is from its characterization in a number of different disciplines. A comparison of characterizations identifies a number of commonalities and common definitions. Using the derived set of definitions, I incorporate hope into economic analysis, consider what impli...
