'A Fenian Pastime'?: early Irish board games and their identification with chess
(2010)
HARDING, TIMOTHY DAVID
Abstract:
Twentieth century scholars, critically re-examining Ireland’s origin myths, explained how ‘synthetic pseudo-history’ such as the Lebor Gabála Érenn arose. Sports, like nations, have need of origin myths, chess being no exception; moreover, sporting preferences have sometimes become bound up with a nation’s sense of its unique identity. In the same ancient manuscripts where Celtic revivalists found legends of the earliest people in Ireland, they often also found references to board-games. What may be called the myth of Celtic Chess then emerged. The weak version stated that the pre-Norman Irish played chess; the strong form, more rarely seen, actually claimed a native origin for the game. The myth was especially publicised during the period of re-awakening Gaelic identity from the 1880s to the First World War and persists in some quarters to this day. This article examines the role that chess, and board games of skill that were mistaken for chess, played in Irish cultural nationali...

'All I have to do is dream?' Re-greening Irish integrationism
(2010)

Abstract:
Contemporary Ireland had moved from the discovery – during the 1997 European Year against Racism – that racism is indeed an Irish problem, to euphemisms such as interculturalism, transculturalism, integration and cultural diversity. Up until the last throes of Celtic capitalism, the dominant narrative was one of failed European multiculturalism and the suggestion that ‘we’ were getting it right while other EU states were getting bogged down in assimilationism and multiculturalism – both seen as failed migrant integration technologies. However, as the economy sinks, these discourses have totally disappeared from the public radar, as integration and immigration become vague memories of better times, or discourses of renewed competition for what are clearly scarce resources. At the same time, race and racism are becoming unspeakable, spoken only by the white, settled, Christian Irish advocates of solidarity and ‘interculturalism’, making no space for the racialised to partake in the an...

'Ancora Imparo' (Still I am Learning): An Inquiry into Visual Artists' Experience of Creativity in Old Age
(2007)
Mac Eoin, Ailbhe
Abstract:
As a student of Irish Modern and Contemporary Art History, my contribution to The Lived Life project explores the topic of later-life artistic creativity amongst older visual artists. In their capacity as self-employed practioners artists are not obliged to retire at the age of 65, and as they must age like everyone else, it is likely that with the passing of time their vision and interpretatio of art might change also. An artist's skill and technical proficiency may develop throughout his or her lifetime, and although ageing may sometimes affect this proficiency in a negative sense, the experience of ageing can enrich an artist's life experience, which can then be reflected in his work. The progression of one's life is reflected in one's artistic developments.

'Genius', 'Faction' and Rescuing Intellectual Property Rights
(2005)
KINGSTON, WILLIAM
Abstract:
Intellectual property rights have been driven relentlessly towards a unitary system for the entire world, originally through passive copying of flawed United States arrangements, but more recently as a result of determined lobbying by American interests. But diversity and competition have the same beneficial potential for institutions themselves as they have for the economic development they can foster or hinder. A financial dimension in measuring grants, protecting innovation directly, compulsory technical arbitration of disputes, and some positive discrimination in favour of smaller firms could contribute to moving the balance back towards the diversity in rights that other countries need.

'He really leant on me a lot': Parents' Perspectives on the Provision of Support to Divorced and Separated Adult Children in Ireland
(2011)
TIMONEN, VIRPI; DOYLE, MARTHA
Abstract:
The literature on intergenerational transfers and divorce has paid little attention to the experiences of older adults whose son or daughter has divorced or separated. We conducted 31 qualitative interviews to explore support provision from the perspective of older adults with divorced or separated adult children. All respondents were also grandparents. Older adults whose sons and daughters have experienced divorce or separation seek to accomplish two main aims, namely (a) compensating for the perceived losses that their adult children (and grandchildren) have experienced and (b) drawing boundaries around the support that they channel in order to compensate for the losses. The findings support the relevance of both the solidarity and ambivalence paradigms in seeking to understand post-separation intergenerational relationships and transfers, and hence the argument that these frameworks are compatible and complementary.

'How Can You Just Cut Off a Whole Side of the Family and Say Move On?' The Reshaping of Paternal Grandparent-Grandchild Relationships Following Relationship Breakdown in the Middle Generation
(2010)
O'DWYER, CIARA MARY; DOYLE, MARTHA; TIMONEN, VIRPI
Abstract:
Based on a qualitative study of 31 grandparents, this article highlights how separation in the middle generation can result in an erosion of trust and quality of paternal grandparent-grandchild relationships. Despite these changes, grandparents endeavour to support and remain involved in the lives of their grandchildren by inter alia compensating for a perceived lack of their sons’ parenting skills, affirming their grandchild’s position in the paternal kin network and acting as a mediator between the separated couple to ensure continued contact with grandchildren. The findings suggest that the actions of paternal grandparents can potentially have important future implications not only for the grandparent-grandchild relationship, but also the relationship trajectories of their adult son and child in the post-separation family.

'It's nice to see someone coming in': Exploring the Social Objectives of Meals-on-Wheels
(2010)
O'DWYER, CIARA MARY; TIMONEN, VIRPI
Abstract:
Despite the fact that meals-on-wheels have both nutritional and social aspects, there is a paucity of research on the social objectives of the service. This article set out to develop our understanding of the social objectives of meals-on-wheels and to explore the extent to which they are met by services in Ireland. A literature review suggested that meals-on-wheels have the potential to meet three social objectives, namely 1) providing meals recipients with social contact, 2) helping to re-stimulate an interest in meals and regularising mealtimes, and 3) helping to develop an acceptance of the service. Interviews were conducted with 66 purposively-sampled meals-on-wheels recipients in order to explore these themes and to augment them as necessary. Respondents derived limited social contact from the service, and there was considerable variance in staff awareness of this social dimension; the objective of regularising mealtimes was not important for most recipients; and many were rel...

'National Report: Eire' in Consular and Diplomatic Protection: Legal Framework in the EU Member States
(2010)
SYMMONS, CLIVE
Abstract:
This Report contains the legal framework and national practice of Ireland on consular and diplomatic protection as of 31 May 2010. Ireland has few documents on the public record relating to practice in this regard. As will be seen, most of the Irish practice is contained in information circulars which are normally distributed only to Irish consular officials abroad.

'Pragmatic randomized controlled trial of individually prescribed exercise versus usual care in a heterogeneous cancer survivor population': a feasibility study PEACH trial: prescribed exercise after chemotherapy.
(2010)
O'DONNELL, DEARBHAILE MAIRI; WALSH, JULIE; GUINAN, EMER; HUSSEY, JULIETTE M
Abstract:
BACKGROUND: Many cancer survivors suffer a range of physical and psychological symptoms which may persist for months or years after cessation of treatment. Despite the known benefits of exercise and its potential to address many of the adverse effects of treatment, the role of exercise as well as optimum duration, frequency, and intensity in this population has yet to be fully elucidated. Many cancer rehabilitation programmes presented in the literature are very long and have tight eligibility criteria which make them non-applicable to the majority of cancer survivors. This paper presents the protocol of a novel 8-week intervention which aims to increase fitness, and address other physical symptoms in a heterogeneous cancer survivor population. METHODS/DESIGN: The aim is to recruit 64 cancer survivors 2-6 months after completion of chemotherapy, usually adjuvant, with curative intent. Subjects will be recruited through oncology clinics in a single institution and randomised to usual...

Abstract:

Laser implosion of 87-bar neon-filled glass microballoon targets produces a dense, cool plasma whose development in time and space is recorded by pulsed-x-ray shadowgraphy with soft x rays from a separate laser-produced plasma. Compressed densities of 4 g cm-3 are estimated from the data by comparison with numerical simulations of the implosion.

'Robust Self-Assembled Monolayers of Ru(II) and Os(II) Polypyridines on Gold Surfaces: Exploring New Potentials'

DRAPER, SYLVIA MARY; MURPHY, FRANCES
Abstract:
Metal complexes [M(phtpy)(pztpy)](PF6)2 (phtpy = 4'-phenyl-2,2':6',2"-terpyridine, pztpy = 4'-(Npiperazinyl)- 2,2':6',2"-terpyridine, M = Ru, Os) were prepared and examined spectroscopically and electrochemically. The piperazine attachment was found to significantly modify the photophysical and electrochemical properties compared to the parent bis-terpyridine complexes, causing a red-shift of the 1MLCT (23 nm) and a substantial cathodic shift of the redox potential (0.30 V for Ru, 0.23 V for Os). Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of the complexes on polished gold electrodes were generated simply via the in situ formation of a dithiocarbamate (DTC) anchoring group at the terminal piperazinyl nitrogen on the pztpy ligand. Cyclic voltammetry revealed that the monolayers show excellent reversible behaviour and exceptional stability. The high stability of the SAMs is attributed to the strong bidentate attachment to the gold surface of the DTC tether...

'Runsort' - An Adaptive Mergesort for Prolog
(2005)
BRADY, MICHAEL HAYES
Abstract:
This note describes a novel list-sorting method for Prolog which is stable, has O(n log n) worst-case behaviour and O(n) best-case behaviour. The algorithm is an adaptive variant of bottom-up mergesort using so-called long runs of preexisting order to improve efficiency; accordingly we have called it ‘runsort’. Runsort compares favourably with samsort, and a modification to samsort is suggested.

'The future isn't what it used to be': Technology in counselling and psychotherapy
(2008)
RICHARDS, DEREK
Abstract:
Change is prefigured in the articulation by Dr Rick Satavas: ‘the future isn’t what it used to be’. Its sentiment rings true; recently psychotherapy practitioners and researchers have begun investigating the potential of engaging new technologies, such as the internet and software programs to deliver psychological interventions (Ritterband et al, 2003). Quite a bit of work has already been done and this paper will give an overview. The paper addresses the reasons for innovation and discusses the more salient advantages and disadvantages of engaging technology. In particular the paper will focus on online counselling. Lastly, the therapeutic relationship online will be considered.

"Credit Power and Democracy," by Major C. H. Douglas, considered

Abstract:
Bishop Berkeley had the reputation in his own day of having written a book—The Principles of Human Knowledge— which no one could understand. 'His labours', said a contemporary philosopher of some eminence, 'are of little use on account of their abstruseness.' Yet Berkeley believed that by means of that book he had 'done away with the chief causes of error and difficulty in the sciences.' I am proposing now to attempt some examination of that remarkable book, Credit Power and Democracy, written, together with some other works of a kindred nature, by Major C. H. Douglas.

"I hate having nobody here, I'd like to know where they all are": Can qualitative research detect differences in Quality of Life among Nursing Home Residents with different levels of Cognitive Impairment?
(2011)
CAHILL, SUZANNE; DIAZ-PONCE, ANA
Abstract:
Objective: To ascertain if similarities or differences exist in perceptions of quality of life (QoL) amongst nursing 10 home (NH) residents with different levels of cognitive impairment (CI). Method: Face-to-face interviews using a simple 15-item semi-structured interview schedule with 61 older people with a CI (13 mild, 20 moderate and 28 severe) living in three Dublin area based NHs. Results: Four key themes of QoL with accompanying sub-themes were identified: (1) social contact, (2) attachment, (3) pleasurable activities and (4) affect. Whilst some similarities existed between the three groups, 15 results showed emerging differences, particularly between those with a mild and severe CI. In particular, the narratives of those with a severe CI reflected an absence of social contact, a quest for human contact and a lack of awareness of structured pleasurable activities. A large majority also reported feelings of loneliness, isolation and a search for home. Conclusions: Findings supp...

"It gives me a sense of independence" Findings from Ireland on the use and usefulness of assistive technology for people with dementia
(2007)
CAHILL, SUZANNE
Abstract:
This work reports Irish data emerging from the ENABLE study which trialled assistive technologies in the homes of people with dementia across five European countries and assessed their use and usefulness. The aim of this paper is to report findings on i) whether new prototype technologies could be used and were considered useful by people with dementia and their primary caregivers, ii) whether any technical difficulties were experienced by families while trialling these products, iii) whether these technologies could be better refined, and (iv) whether these products would be financially viable on the open market. Findings showed that in general, most devices trialled were used and were considered useful by people with dementia. Apart from the night lamp, each of the other devices trialled was also used and considered useful by most primary caregivers. With the exception of the night lamp which was an entirely passive device, other devices often needed a carer present to remind the ...

"The universities." II - The University of Dublin: Trinity College

Meenan, James
Abstract:
The University of Dublin, or Trinity College - by whichever name we may decide to call it - is the third University in these islands and, of course, by far the most ancient in this country. There have been so many changes in Ireland in the last forty years that some of the evidence given to the University commissions of 1901 and 1906 reads oddly now. Trinity, however, remains as the oldest and most famous of Irish universities and it still enjoys the unquestioned support of an important group in the community. We have therefore to examine its development in a time of extreme difficulty and uncertainty.

Abstract:
University education has ceased to excite more than passing interest since the Irish Universities Act of 1908. The University of Dublin, indeed, has been examined by a Royal Commission since that date; but there has been no inquiry into the developments in University education as a whole or into the degree to which the arrangements made in 1908 have justified the hopes reposed in them. The present paper, it is hoped, will be the first of a series in which the progress of the five University institutions will be examined.

“Collaborative production” and the Irish boom: work organisation, partnership and direct involvement in Irish workplaces
(2000)
Roche, William K.; Geary, John F.
Abstract:
A significant strand of recent social-scientific writing on Ireland has assigned great importance to various forms of “collaborative production”: new forms of work organisation, partnership and direct employee involvement — even suggesting that their growing diffusion might have played a major role in Ireland’s exceptional economic performance during the 1990s. This paper draws on the University College Dublin national workplace survey of employee relations to present an assessment of the degree to which new modes of collaborative production have gained ground in Ireland during the 1990s. While collaborative production is undoubtedly significant in many Irish workplaces, “exclusionary” forms of decision-making are shown to dominate the postures of establishments towards the handling of change. Arguments pointing to the “transformation”, actual or imminent, of work practices and employment relations in Ireland are rejected. Change in Ireland is shown to have much in common with devel...

“Drawing Illusions” – a case study in the incorrectness of diagrammatic reasoning
(1999)
Lemon, Oliver
Abstract:
TCD-CS-1999-17
In “Something to Reckon With” [6], a system for diagramming syllogistic inferences using straight line segments is presented (see also Englebretsen [5]). In the light of recent research on the representational power of diagrammatic representation systems (Lemon and Pratt [12, 13]) we point out some problems with the proposal, and indeed, with any proposal for representing logically possible situations diagrammatically. We shall first outline the proposed linear diagrammatic system of Englebretsen [5], and then show by means of counterexamples that it is inadequate as a representation scheme for general logical inferences (the task for which the system is intended). We also show that modifications to the system fail to remedy the problems. The considerations we present are not limited to the particular proposals of Englebretsen [5, 6]; we thus draw a more general moral about the use of spatial relations in representation systems.

“Insufficient for the support of a family”: wages on the public works during the Great Irish Famine

Abstract:
This paper presents a model of the money wage paid on the public works during the Irish Famine. The administrators are assumed to minimise a cost function that includes the divergence from the target as well as the increase compared to the wage that current information is available on. Estimation reveals a lag of four weeks existed between price changes occurring and adjustment to the money wages. Most seriously, the administrators systematically failed to take full account of the extent of price changes.

“New” and “old” social risks: life cycle and social class perspectives on social exclusion in Ireland
(2008)
Whelan, Christopher T.; Maitre, Bertrand
Abstract:
The life cycle concept has come to have considerable prominence in Irish social policy debate. However, this has occurred without any systematic effort to link its usage to the broader literature relating to the concept. Nor has there been any detailed consideration of how we should set about operationalising the concept. In this paper we argue the need for “macro” life cycle perspectives that have been influenced by recent challenges to the welfare state to be combined with “micro” perspectives focusing on the dynamic and multidimensional nature of social exclusion. We make use of Irish EU-SILC 2005 data in developing a life cycle schema and considering its relationship to a range of indicators of social exclusion. At the European level renewed interest in the life cycle concept is associated with the increasing emphasis on the distinction between “new” and “old” social risks and the notion that the former are more “individualised”. Inequality and poverty rather than being differen...
