A paramatric manipulation of central executive functioning

A paramatric manipulation of central executive functioning
(2000)
GARAVAN, HUGH PATRICK
Abstract:
The central executive is both an important and poorly understood construct that is invoked in current theoretical models of human cognition and in various dysexecutive clinical syndromes. We report a task designed to isolate one elementary executive function, namely the allocation of attentional resources within working memory. The frequency with which attention was switched between items in working memory was varied across different trials, while storage and rehearsal demands were held constant. Functional magnetic resonance imaging revealed widespread areas, both prefrontal and more posterior, that differentially activated as a function of a trial's executive demands. Furthermore, areas that differed as a function of executive demands tended to lie adjacent to areas that were activated during the task but that did not so differ. Together, these data suggest that a distributed neuroanatomy, rather than a specific and unique locus, underlies this attention switching executive f...

Abstract:
This paper gives a declarative speci cation of a popular inheritance system and shows how simple changes to this speci cation can result in di erent path based reasoners This parameterized de nition provides a deeper understanding of the fundamental di erences between some of the more popular path based inheritance reasoners In particular it allows the clari cation of some of the results on the complexity of reasoning in the various systems The uniform framework also allows definition of novel systems which constitute intermediate points in the space of possible reasoners and facilitates perspicuous Prolog implementation

A parametric feature extraction and classification strategy for brain-computer interfacing
(2005)
REILLY, RICHARD
Abstract:
peer-reviewed
Parametric modeling strategies are explored in conjunction with linear discriminant analysis for use in an electroencephalogram (EEG)-based brain-computer interface (BCI). A left/right self-paced typing exercise is analyzed by extending the usual autoregressive (AR) model for EEG feature extraction with an AR with exogenous input (ARX) model for combined filtering and feature extraction. The ensemble averaged Bereitschaftspotential (an event related potential preceding the onset of movement) forms the exogenous signal input to the ARX model. Based on trials with six subjects, the ARX case of modeling both the signal and noise was found to be considerably more effective than modeling the noise alone (common in BCI systems) with the AR method yielding a classification accuracy of 52.8 /spl plusmn/ 4.8% and the ARX method an accuracy of 79.1 /spl plusmn/ 3.9% across subjects. The results suggest a role for ARX-based feature extraction in BCIs based on evoked and event...

A patient adapting heartbeat classifier using ECG morphology and heart-beat interval features
(2006)
REILLY, RICHARD
Abstract:
peer-reviewed
An adaptive system for the automatic processing of the electrocardiogram (ECG) for the classification of heartbeats into one of the five beat classes recommended by ANSI/AAMI EC57:1998 standard is presented. The heartbeat classification system processes an incoming recording with a global-classifier to produce the first set of beat annotations. An expert then validates and if necessary corrects a fraction of the beats of the recording. The system then adapts by first training a local-classifier using the newly annotated beats and combines this with the global-classifier to produce an adapted classification system. The adapted system is then used to update beat annotations. The results of this study show that the performance of a patient adaptable classifier increases with the amount of training of the system on the local record. Crucially, the performance of the system can be significantly boosted with a small amount of adaptation even when all beats used for adapt...

A pattern recognition approach to the detection of single-trial event-related fMRI.
(2004)
GARAVAN, HUGH PATRICK
Abstract:
Functional magnetic resonance imaging (FMRI) is an imaging technique for determining which regions of the brain are activated in response to a stimulus or event. Early FMRI experiment paradigms were based upon those used in positron emission tomography (PET), i.e. employing a block design consisting of extended periods of ‘on’ against ‘off ’ activations. More recent experiments were based on event-related FMRI, harnessing the fact that very short stimuli trains or single events can generate robust responses. FMRI data suffer from low signal-to-noise ratios, and typical event-related experiment paradigms employ selective averaging over many trials before using statistical methods for determining active brain regions. The paper reports a pattern recognition approach to the detection of single-trial FMRI responses without recourse to averaging and at modest field strengths (1.5 T). Linear discrimi- nant analysis (LDA) was applied in conjunction with different feature extracti...

A Peer-to-Peer Architecture for Collaborative Spam Filtering
(2002)
Cottereau, Laurent
Abstract:
Over the last twenty years, the importance of electronic mail has risen to a point where it is now a critical medium for many companies and individuals. This fact has led to the emergence of a new method of invasive marketing: Unsolicited Commercial Email, otherwise known as spam. Spam is costing email users an increasing amount of time and money.
It is the act of blindly mass mailing a message that makes it spam, and not merely its content, making it harder to spot automatically. Because of this, the need for a flexible, precise, cheap and easy to use spam filter has yet to be met. A recent idea that has proved promising for accurate detection of spam is the collaborative sharing of knowledge about spam between users.
This thesis describes a distributed peer to peer architecture that allows users to store and share data about spam. This design provides a trust management model that offers both precise filtering mechanisms and protection from malevolent users. One possible i...

A Peer-to-Peer Reference Architecture
(2006)
HAAHR, MADS; SINGH, ATUL
Abstract:
peer-reviewed
Peer-to-Peer (P2P) applications are extremely popular on the Internet because they allow users to share information in a decentralised manner. Internet users use file-sharing applications (e.g., BitTorrent, KaZaA) to share and exchange files and collaboration applications (e.g., Jabber, Groove) to exchange chat messages and work on shared documents. A reference architecture for a domain provides an architecture template which can be used as a starting point for designing the software architecture of a system in that domain. Despite the popularity of P2P applications there is no reference architecture for the P2P domain. This paper presents a reference architecture for the P2P domain. The reference architecture has been designed to satisfy the concerns that a P2P application needs to address. The reference architecture takes a service-centric view of the P2P domain. The reference architecture can be used to describe the structure of existing P2P applications and mid...

A perceptual approach to trimming unstructured lumigraphs
(2007)
O'SULLIVAN, CAROL ANN
Abstract:
We present a novel perceptual method to reduce the visual redundancy of unstructured lumigraphs, an image based representation designed for interactive rendering. We combine features of the unstructured lumigraph algorithm and image fidelity metrics to efficiently rank the perceptual impact of the removal of sub-regions of input views (sub-views). We use a greedy approach to estimate the order in which sub-views should be pruned to minimize perceptual degradation at each step. Renderings using varying numbers of sub-views can then be easily visualized with confidence that the retained sub-views are well chosen, thus facilitating the choice of how many to retain. The regions of the input views that are left are repacked into a texture atlas. Our method takes advantage of any scene geometry information available but only requires a very coarse approximation. We perform a user study to validate its behaviour, as well as investigate the impact of the choice of image fidelity metric. The...

A personal account of minor activities in the British agricultural war effort with some speculations on the application of British technique in Irish agricultural conditions

Abstract:
It was my fortunate lot to see something, at first hand, of the tremendous drive for increased food production, made almost as a single individual, by the whole of that great mass of men and women in the agricultural industry of Great Britain. Can this be done in Ireland? If it cannot, what is the reason? For Ireland produces some of the best farmers in the world, and because of their climate and the productivity of their soil, they have, as I have seen for myself, much spare time to devote to the serviced of their country. That is my Speculation No. 1. Speculation No. 2 concerns itself with the age-old problem, in Ireland, of winter dairying. Speculation No. 3 : What has happened in Irish livestock circles? Part of the British war effort was to intensify the fight against disease. Is enough being done here outside the efforts of some few dozen devoted men?

An affordable personal communicator which allows full control of the voice has been designed and developed. The aid employs coded digitised speech in an efficient manner, coupled with specif- hardware in an attempt to address the problems which normally beset such communicators. Speech is recorded, digitised and compressed under ADPCM from 12 to 4-bits. The compressed waveform is transferred into a portable handheld, discreet playback unit, under the control of specif= graphic interface software, allowing complete customisation of the handheld unit for the user or application.

A pertubative approach to the Kondo effect in magnetic atoms on nonmagnetic substrates
(2011)

Abstract:
Recent experimental advances in scanning tunneling microscopy make the measurement of the conductance spectra of isolated and magnetically coupled atoms on nonmagnetic substrates possible. Notably these spectra are characterized by a competition between the Kondo effect and spin-flip inelastic electron tunneling. In particular they include Kondo resonances and a logarithmic enhancement of the conductance at voltages corresponding to magnetic excitations, two features that cannot be captured by second order perturbation theory in the electron-spin coupling. We have now derived a third order analytic expression for the electron-spin self-energy, which can be readily used in combination with the non-equilibrium Green's function scheme for electron transport at finite bias. We demonstrate that our method is capable of quantitative description the competition between Kondo resonances and spin-flip inelastic electron tunneling at a computational cost significantly lower than that of ...

Abstract:
peer-reviewed
Software license management is currently expanding from its traditional desktop environment into the mobile application space, but software vendors are still applying old licensing models to a platform where application rights will be specified, managed and distributed in new and different ways. This paper presents an open-source pervasive application rights management architecture (PARMA) for fixed network and mobile applications that supports the specification of application rights in a rights expression language (REL) based on ODRL. Our rights specification model uses aspectoriented programming to generate modularized rights enforcement behaviour, which reduces development time for rights models such as feature-based usage rights and nagware. PARMA manages vendor and customer application rights over multiple platforms using a web services architecture and a container model on the client-side. The container model also supports the integration of services such as ...

Abstract:
A spiropyran-based fluorescent and photoregenerable receptor that is selective towards zinc(II) ions over a series of biologically and environmentally relevant cations has been designed and synthesized. The complex formation gives rise to color changes that are visible to the naked eye and reversible upon visible light irradiation. 1H-NMR studies confirm that the closed form is converted to the open trans-merocyanine complex upon addition of zinc ions.

A plan for extending the jurisdiction for selling Incumbered estates to cases where a Receiver has been appointed over a life estate
(1855)
Hancock, W. Neilson
Abstract:
The chief benefit which the Incumbered Estates Act has conferred upon Ireland, has been the substitution of solvent for insolvent proprietors To appreciate the full extent of this change, we must raise our views above the notion of considering the ownership of land as a mere right for the convenience of the person who happens to possess it. It is in truth a high office, carrying with it great power and influence, and forming the basis of a large part of our arrangements for local government. This view of a landlord's position assists us in explaining the anarchy and disorganization of Ireland for the past half century. A large part of the governing classes were in a false position. Hence the want of confidence between different classes, hence the attacks on the character of the people, hence the delusive theories to account for the state of the country, and hence the opposition to all changes and improvements.

Abstract:
The embarkation of England in a war; the failure of the anticipations at first indulged in by some parties, that this contest could be carried on out of the revenue of the country; the recent addition of sixteen millions to the national debt, and the probability of its progressive augmentation during every year of the continuation of hostilities, all tend to impart interest to the question, whether any means should be taken to provide for the reduction or ultimate extinction of the debts incurred in the prosecution of past and present wars ; and if so, by what means this object can best be effected.

A platform for exploring reconfigurability in distributed and disaggregated wireless networks
(2005)
DOYLE, LINDA
Abstract:
peer-reviewed
The purpose of this paper is to present an overview of a platform for exploring reconfigurability in wireless networks. The types of networks that are particularly of interest here are distributed and disaggregated networks. The term disaggregated is used to describe networks that are not alone distributed but also non-homogenous and controlled by different and possibly competing entities. In distributed and disaggregated networks, network-wide reconfiguration, if indeed possible, will not be achieved through a co-ordinating or controlling entity as a global view or global control of the network does not exist. Therefore mechanisms for facilitating network-wide reconfiguration based on local knowledge only are needed. The platform presented in the paper combines research outcomes from ad hoc networking research and work carried out in the area of reconfigurable radio design in an effort to address these issues.

Abstract:
The first step is to have a careful mining survey made, for hitherto none has been attempted; the geological survey, about which more hereafter, was made from surface indications only, and from such mining information or traditions as the officers couid collect. For the preparation of a mining survey it is essential to make expensive boring operations, in such localities as may be advised by our mining experts, and for this diamond-drills and a large sum of money is necessary.

Abstract:
Countrymen are familiar with the practice of holding out a carrot to an obstinate type of quadruped in order to induce it to go where it would otherwise be unwilling to go. When it gets there it may possibly get some stronger nourishment than the carrot. The monopoly of the home market is held out to our dairy farmers as a means of inducing them to recapture the export market, and hold it firmly every month of the year. If this result is achieved it will mean nothing less than a revolution in the whole of our agricultural economy. The object of this paper is to examine, in the light of all the available economic facts, whether this revolution is possible and desirable.

Abstract:
There is an increasing number of applications designed to run on the Internet whose Quality of Service (QoS) requirement is higher than the current offering from the IP network that being best effort. There has been a call by many in the Internet Community to change the way in which the well trusted IP protocol works so as to provide a level of QoS better than best effort. Numerous protocols have been suggested that could enhance the QoS on the Internet. In changing the workings on the Internet we must carefully consider which is the best option. One approach to IP QoS is the use of policies to enforce QoS. One of the problems of using policies to support QoS is how to create policies on the basis of an Service Level Specification (SLS).
This dissertation describes the design and implementation of a framework which supports the creation and deployment of policies on to an IP network.
The framework consists of a number of components. The first component is a Policy Enforcemen...

Abstract:

Low maternal folate or vitamin B12 status has been implicated in numerous pregnancy complications including spontaneous abortion. The primary aim of this study was to test a polymorphism within the trifunctional folate enzyme MTHFD1 (5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate dehydrogenase, 5,10-methenyltetrahydrofolate cyclohydrolase, 10-formyltetrahydrofolate synthetase) for an association with a mother’s risk of having an unexplained second trimester pregnancy loss. We genotyped 125 women who had at least one unexplained spontaneous abortion or intrauterine fetal death between 13 and 26 weeks gestation and 625 control women with no history of prior pregnancy loss. Our study is the first to identify an association between the MTHFD1 1958GA (R653Q) polymorphism and the maternal risk of having an unexplained second trimester pregnancy loss. Women who are MTHFD1 1958AA homozygous have a 1.64-fold increased risk of having an unexplained second trimester loss compared to women wh...
