A Systematic Study of the Dispersion of SWNTs in Organic Solvents
(2010)
Chen, Qiaohuan; Debnath, Sourabhi; O'Neill, Luke; Hedderman, Theresa; Gregan, Elizabeth; Byrne, Hugh J
Abstract:
<p>Dispersions of as-produced HiPco single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) in a series of organic solvents were prepared by dilution with the aid of tip sonication. Mild centrifugation (~ 945 g) was carried out to remove large bundles. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) studies revealed that the bundle size decreased as the dispersion was diluted. By measuring the UV-vis-NIR absorption before and after centrifugation as a function of the concentration, the dispersion limit of SWNTs in each solvent can be determined. Correlations between the dispersion limit and solvent solubility parameters, including the Hildebrand solubility parameter and three dimensional Hansen solubility parameters, are explored, demonstrating that SWNTs are easily dispersed in solvents with Hildebrand solubility parameter range from ~22-24 MPa1/2 and Hansen polarity component (<em>δP</em>) ~12-14 MPa1/2. No clear correlation betw...

a Systematic Study of the Effect of Silver on the Chelation of Formic Acid to a Titanium Precursor and the Resulting Effect on the Anatase to Rutile Transformation of TiO2
(2010)
Nolan, Nicholas; Seery, Michael; Hinder, Steve; Healy, Linda; Pillai, Suresh
Abstract:
<p>Anatase to rutile transition in an unmodified synthetic titania usually occurs at a temperature range of 600 – 700 °C. Various methods such as addition of metallic and non-metallic dopants and modifying the precursor have previously been reported to influence the anatase to rutile transition temperature. In the current study, the effect of addition of increasing amounts of silver to the extent of chelation of a formate group to a titanium precursor and the resulting effects on the transformation of anatase to rutile has been studied. The addition of silver (0, 1, 3 and 5 mol %) on the anatase to rutile transformation temperature has been systematically followed by FTIR, Raman, XRD, DSC and XPS. From the FTIR and Raman spectroscopy studies it was observed that the incorporation of silver caused a reduction in the intensity of the COO- stretches indicating that the titania – formate bridging complex is becoming weaker in the presence of silver. XRD studies indicated an early ...

A Systematic Study of the Effects of Naphthalene and Anthracene Substitution on the Properties of PPV Derivative Conjugated Systems
(2007)
Lynch, Patrick; O'Neill, Luke; Bradley, David; Byrne, Hugh; McNamara, Mary
Abstract:
<p>The systematic synthesis of poly(phenylvinylene) (PPV) derivatives by the Wittig-Horner reaction is reported. The phenyl units of the PPV structure are methodically substituted by naphthyl and anthryl units to form a homologous series of structures. The 2,6 attachment of the vinylene linkage on the anthryl ring provides novel structures that have not been reported before due to their synthetic inaccessibility. The introduction of naphthyl units results in a hypsochromatic shift in the absorption and emission spectra, while the introduction of anthryl units leads to a bathochromatic shift relative to the naphthalene structures. The observed structural variation of the spectroscopic properties is explained in terms of a combination of the increased conjugation of the substituent acene units and the decreased electronic contribution across the vinyl linkage.</p>

A Tale of Two Strategies for Higher Education and Economic Recovery: Ireland and Australia
(2010)
Hazelkorn, Ellen; Massaro, Vin
Abstract:
<p>As Dirk van Damme suggested (van Damme, 2009), the effects of the global financial crisis (GFC) have been manifold and complex and affected countries differently. Australia and Ireland have fared very differently in the GFC so choices will inevitably have been influenced by their relative capacity to spend on higher education. Since 1988 Australia has had a unitary, government-regulated but independent higher education system with block funding from a combination of government allocations and student contributions. In contrast, Ireland retains a government-regulated binary system dependent upon public investment and direct government control of staffing budgets. In recent years, both countries have reviewed their higher education system (Australia 2008, Ireland 2009-2010). The Australian review forms the basis of the government’s intention to further deregulate the system by removing enrolment caps, while Ireland’s higher education is caught up in a drive for efficiency...

Abstract:
<p>A method has been developed for retrieving the complete angular selectivity profile of transmission holographic gratings in one step. The method is applied to study in real time the shrinkage and changes in the effective optical thickness of a slanted holographic grating recorded in an acrylamide-based photopolymer. It can form the basis of a holographic sensor of analytes that cause a thickness change in the holographic medium. It can also be useful for the study and optimization of holographic recording materials and for quality control during production of holographic optical elements.</p>

A theory and practice of website engagibility
(2007)
Fitzpatrick, Ronan, (Thesis)
Abstract:
<p>This thesis explores the domain of website quality. It presents a new study of website quality - an abstraction and synthesis, a measurement methodology, and analysis - and proposes metrics which can be used to quantify it. The strategy employed involved revisiting software quality, modelling its broader perspectives and identifying quality factors which are specific to the World Wide Web (WWW). This resulted in a detailed set of elements which constitute website quality, a method for quantifying a quality measure, and demonstrating an approach to benchmarking eCommerce websites. The thesis has two dimensions. The first is a contribution to the theory of software quality - specifically website quality. The second dimension focuses on two perspectives of website quality - quality-of-product and quality-of-use - and uses them to present a new theory and methodology which are important first steps towards understanding metrics and their use when quantifying website quality. A Virtual-system Concept for Exergy Analysis of Flow Network Plant; Part I: Principles
(2011)
McGovern, Jim; O'Toole, Francis
Abstract:
<p>A new type of virtual system, named a flow constraint system (FCS), is proposed to facilitate, clarify, and simplify exergy analyses of plant that involve material flow networks. The need for the virtual system is outlined and the concept is demonstrated by applying it to a CHP steam cycle. The FCS concept allows the physical constraints on the exergy interactions associated with flow streams to be taken into account fully. It also simplifies the treatment of bifurcations in material flows and considerably reduces the need for absolute exergy evaluations. The new concept follows from the work already published by the authors on conceptual devices for exergy analysis and builds on this and the work of other authors relating to exergy and exergoeconomic analysis, especially using matrix methods. A bond graph type of diagram is described as an alternative to the usual Grassmann diagram. A numerical illustration is given in a separate paper — Part II.</p>

A Virtual-system Concept for Exergy Analysis of Flow Network Plant; Part II: Exergetic and Exergonomic Analysis Illustration
(2011)

Abstract:
<p>This paper is a continuation of Part I — Principles, to which it refers extensively. The virtual system concept and the methodology introduced in Part I are illustrated by means of a numerical example. This is an exergetic and exergoeconomic analysis of the CHP steam plant that was described in Part I without operating values and parameters. Matrix methods developed by Valero et al. (1986) are adapted to the new concept. It is shown that these methods are made simpler and less subjective. Bond-graph-type diagrams for exergetic and economic costs are presented.</p>

A Vocalisation-based Drawing Interface for Disabled Children
(2004)
Burke, Ted
Abstract:
<p>In our work with disabled children at Ireland’s National Rehabilitation Hospital, a problem we have experienced in the facilitation of art activities is that traditional art materials and standard computer drawing programs sometimes prove inaccessible. In this paper, an original system, called “PaintMyVoice” is presented which facilitates the creation of two or three-dimensional images using a variety of novel input modalities. In particular, vocalisations can be used to create original images of a variety of objects, including trees, flowers and landscape elements. Additional input to the system can optionally be provided via mouse, keyboard, switch interface or digital camera depending on the abilities of the user. Here, the program’s user interface is described, with an emphasis on accessibility features. The signal processing techniques used to measure various vocal characteristics including intensity, pitch and other spectral characteristics are outlined. The means of ...

A Voltage Sensor Based on a Singlemode-Multimode-Singlemode Fiber Structure
(2010)
Hatta, Agus; Semenova, Yuliya; Rajan, Ginu; Farrell, Gerald
Abstract:
A voltage sensor based on a singlemode-multimodesinglemode (SMS) fiber structure, attached to a piezoelectric (PZT), utilized in a ratiometric optical power measurement scheme is proposed. The elongation of the PZT due to an applied voltage induces a strain on the SMS fiber structure and in turn results in a change in the transmission loss response of the SMS fiber structure. It is found that at selected wavelengths, a strong voltage dependence for the transmission loss of the SMS fiber structure can be achieved. The voltage information can be obtained from the power ratio of the system, assuming the system is calibrated. The proposed voltage sensor offers a simpler configuration when compared to other fiber optic voltage sensors.

A wavelet controller for shunt active power filter
(2006)
Basu, Malabika; Basu, Biswajit
Abstract:
A wavelet-based controller for shunt active power filter (APF) has been proposed in this paper. The constructed controller based on multi resolution analysis has the advantage of better frequency bandwidth selection. The tuning parameters of the controllers are the gains to be applied to the time-frequency signals at different resolutions. This has the advantage of aiding the process of a proper choice of coefficients of tuning parameters. The developed simulation model of the APF with wavelet-based control shows satisfactory steady state and dynamic performance. A comparison with standard PI controller shows that the dynamic response of the proposed wavelet controller is much faster. This is of advantage in specific applications where the fast dynamic response of the controller is of importance to achieve a desired reference within a short duration of time. The novel technique of the generation of control signal ensures that even when the steady state error is zero, the controller ...

A Web and Mobile System for Environmental Decision Support
(2010)
Carswell, James; Gardiner, Keith; Bertolotto, Michela; Rizzine, Andrea
Abstract:
<p>Current field data collection methods for many of today’s scientific and other observer/monitor type applications are still entrenched in the “clipboard age”, requiring manual data transcription to a database management system at some (often much) later date, and only allows for visualisation and analysis of recently captured field data “back in the lab”. This chapter is targeted at progressing today’s pen & paper methodology into the spatially enabled mobile computing age of realtime multi-media data input, integration, visualisation, and analysis simultaneously both in the field and the lab. The system described is customized to the specific needs of the Canadian Great Lakes Laboratory for Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences Fish Habitat Management Group requirements for fish species at risk assessment, but is ready for adaptation to other environmental agency applications (e.g. forestry, health-pesticide monitoring, agriculture, etc.). The chapter is ideally suited to all...

Abstract:
<p>This paper describes a Web-based and mobile system specifically developed to monitor fish species at risk. Such a system integrates spatial functionality to allow users not only to visualise maps and metadata of the area of concern but also to perform context-aware queries and updating of spatial datasets. The spatial datasets are provided by the Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) and the prototype is customised to the specific needs of the Great Lakes Laboratory for Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences (GLLFAS) Fish Habitat Section requirements for fish species at risk assessment. Currently, researchers, habitat biologists and enforcement officers have access to the fisheries database, containing layers of biological information solely from the office. Delivering these data overlaid on base maps of the Great Lakes region to a GPS-enabled hand-held device and linking it to each task currently being investigated allows for mobile DFO biologists and enforcement offic...

A Wireless Traffic Probe for Radio Resource Management and QoS Provisioning in IEEE 802.11 WLANs
(2004)
Davis, Mark
Abstract:
<p>The emergence of real-time services such as voice over IP (VoIP) and video streaming imposes stringent requirements on the performance of a network if quality of service (QoS) targets are to be achieved. In the case of wireless networks, some form of radio resource management (RRM) is typically required to allocate the available resources among the contending stations in accordance with their needs and respective priorities. A critical aspect of any RRM scheme is the ability to monitor resource usage and to determine the resource requirements on a per-station basis. In this paper we describe a wireless traffic probe for IEEE 802.11 WLANs capable of obtaining this information and presenting it in a compact and intuitive format. The probe also shows how the wireless stations interact with one another in competing for the resources of the WLAN in a clear and quantifiable way. The results from the WLAN traffic probe obtained in a series of video streaming test scenarios are als...

Aberrant Expression of LIGHT and its Associated Receptors in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus and Coeliac Disease
(2011)
Dempsey, Eugene, (Thesis)
Abstract:
<p>Members of the TNF superfamily play important roles in the development and maintenance of an effective immune response. One such member of this superfamily, LIGHT, can act as a ligand for three receptors, HVEM, LT-R and DcR3. The engagement of LIGHT and HVEM, an important secondary signal for the full activation of T cells, results in a strong Th1 type response with increased production of cytokines such as INF--. The LIGHT-LT-R pathway plays a role in the recruitment of immune cells to sites of inflammation and can induce apoptosis in certain cells. DcR3, a soluble receptor, is speculated to function in modulating LIGHT’s activity by preventing it from binding with HVEM and LT-R. Two studies published in 2001 highlighted the in vivo effects of constitutive expression of LIGHT on T cells in transgenic mice. The phenotype observed in these mice indicated that there was a loss of self-tolerance leading to systemic autoimmunity as characterised by the presence of multiple auto...

Absolutism and the Confidentiality Debate: Confidentiality and Journalists Sources,
(2004)
Foley, Michael
Abstract:
Sources confidentiality is the one absolute in journalism. A guarantee never to divulge the name of a confidential sources is part of all codes of conduct and is the one clause that never contains a qualification, such as 'save where the public interest demands otherwise'. However, there are problems with this rule, especially when it is used by public relations practitioners or is used when it is clearly not in the public interest.
