Universities Changing in Response to a Volatile Environment: a Case Study from Ireland
(2009)
Kelly, Kevin
Abstract:

This paper is a short summary of a research thesis submitted for a doctoral degree in education in late 2008. The substantive issue investigated was the response of a large higher education institute (HEI) in Ireland, the Dublin Institute of Technology and hereafter referred to as the Institute, to the demands for change. The research was undertaken by an experienced academic from inside the organisation. What is happening in this institute may be significant to others because change in higher education is a key debate throughout the world at present. The research study shows that stakeholders in the Institute acknowledge that change is necessary and some of the practices from both entrepreneurial and corporate universities are seen to be appropriate for certain activities. But an HEI contemplating change cannot simply lift a model that may have proven successful elsewhere and transplant it into its own organisation. The culture and power residing within the organisation mu...

Abstract:

The aim of this study is to help create an awareness of the changing milieu within which Higher Education (HE) will operate over coming decades, while concurrently exploring its possible alternative forms. The specific objectives of the study are to review literature relevant to the University of the Future in a global, European and Irish context. We have sought to determine key trends which have the potential to affect the future of Higher Education (and the institutions charged with its delivery), under the headings of Demography, Society, Technology, Governance, Economy and Environment, and to identify different possible formats for the University of the Future.

Upmixing from Mono : a Source Separation Approach
(2011)
Fitzgerald, Derry
Abstract:

We present a system for upmixing mono recordings to stereo through the use of sound source separation techniques. The use of sound source separation has the advantage of allowing sources to be placed at distinct points in the stereo field, resulting in more natural sounding upmixes. The system separates an input signal into a number of sources, which can then be imported into a digital audio workstation for upmixing to stereo. Considerations to be taken into account when upmixing are discussed, and a brief overview of the various sound source separation techniques used in the system are given. The effectiveness of the proposed system is then demonstrated on real-world mono recordings.

(2011)
Kilfeather, Eoin; Carswell, James; Gardiner, Keith; Rooney, Seamus
Abstract:

The ICING project is conducting research into eGovernment and Location Based Services and also into two-way interaction with the physical environment. The research focuses on the areas of embedded intelligence, tighter integration of operator platforms and city infrastructure to enable novel services, empowerment of citizens to evolve systems of interaction with the city via social software, input from citizens and sensors for management systems and decision modelling, and a combination of city systems and multi-modal, multi-device communications to provide enhanced services. The technology platforms are gathering indicators from the City, processing the information, proposing actions to be taken with human intervention and supervision and connecting the City with its constituency. Services and information are delivered on a range of commodity devices, providing greater reach and accessibility to local government and communities.

US Military and Civilian Surge in Afghanistan
(2010)
Clonan, Tom
Abstract:
US and British casualty figures in Afghanistan experienced a dramatic surge in 2010. A total of 499 US troops and 103 British soldiers were killed by the Taliban last year with thousands more seriously injured by improvised explosive devices (IEDs). The casualty statistics for Afghanistan paint a grim picture of the US-led International Security Assistance Force’s (ISAF) campaign against the Taliban. ISAF’s war in Afghanistan deteriorated significantly in 2007 as the Taliban re-grouped, re-organised and finessed its counter-insurgency strategy against NATO. For example, the number of US and British troops killed in action by the Taliban on an annual basis trebled between 2007 and 2009. This spike in combat deaths prompted President Obama to announce an Iraq-style troop surge to be deployed in Afghanistan during 2010. The US troop surge in Iraq in 2007 is often cited as the primary causal factor in the reduction of US casualties there by up to 90% between 2007 and 2009. Whilst...

US Missile Shield Plan Heightens European Insecurities
(2008)
Clonan, Tom
Abstract:
European Missile Shield The US Missile Defence Agency (MDA) – without recourse to NATO – is engaged in bilateral negotiations with Poland and the Czech Republic to site missile-shield silos and X-Band radar facilities in central Europe. The US intends to site 10 long-range interceptor missiles at one weapon silo - approximately the size of a football pitch - in Poland by 2011. They also intend to forward-deploy an X-Band radar station from the Marshall Islands in the Pacific to the Czech Republic in the same time period. The Russians have reacted angrily to this development with Russian Defence Minister Anatoly Serdyukov stating in advance of NATO’s Barcelona summit that ‘the deployment of the missile defence system in Eastern Europe will create conditions for higher tensions, violate strategic balance in the world and pose a threat to our national security’. The United States, by virtue of its exclusive bilateral negotiations with the Polish and Czech governments on this issue ...

US Missile Strikes On High Value Targets: Zarqawi
(2004)
Clonan, Tom
Abstract:
Wednesday’s precision air strike on Abu Musab al-Zarqawi and his spiritual advisor Sheik al-Rahman appears to have been the result of a combined Iraqi and US intelligence effort. A US special-forces team - ‘Task Force 145’ - acting on a tip-off from Iraqi sources, is said to have identified Zarqawi’s safe house 8 km north of Baquba early on Wednesday afternoon. ‘Task Force 145’ - under the direction of US Joint Special Forces Command - is a unit whose sole mission is to locate and neutralise ‘high-value’ or ‘VIP’ insurgent targets within Iraq. The unit is believed to be co-located alongside 101st Airborne units at Balad Airbase in the US Multinational Division North area of operations outside of Baghdad. It is believed that leaders of the main insurgency groups in the so-called ‘Sunni Triangle’ – predominantly Baath’ist loyalists – were incensed by recent mass killings of fellow Iraqi Sunni Muslims by fanatical foreign ‘jihadis’ loyal to Al Qaeda and Zarqawi. In response, it is ...

US Situation In Iraq: Comparison With Vietnam
(2003)
Clonan, Tom
Abstract:
The acronym METTS is familiar to military commanders the world over. METTS consists of a problem solving approach to military scenarios under the following headings; Mission, Enemy, Troops, Terrain, Space and time. When applied to the situation facing US commanders in Iraq - as the June 30th deadline for transition to power expires - many challenges become apparent. In terms of mission, the situation is complex. The military are favourably predisposed to simple mission statements that contain clearly articulated aims and objectives within a definite time-frame. The invasion phase of the war in Iraq was a classic example of such a clearly defined mission. Simply stated, the mission consisted of a rapid armoured advance on Baghdad, the removal of Saddam’s regime and the destruction of his military infrastructure. These were clearly identifiable deliverables that were quantifiable and reasonably predictable in terms of operational planning and logistical support. The resulting cam...

Usable software and its attributes: a synthesis of software quality: European Community law and human-computer interaction.
(1998)
Fitzpatrick, Ronan; Higgins, Catherine
Abstract:
Strategic managers and IS professionals who are responsible for specifying, acquiring and producing quality software products are not supported by the endless flow of new international standards, legislation and user requirements. In order to clarify the current situation for everybody concerned with software quality, and especially those interested in usability, there is a need for a new review and evaluation of the various strands that contribute to software quality. By way of review this paper recalls the original software quality factors which were defined twenty years ago by McCall et al. and presents a methodical analysis and synthesis of three modern strands which influence these factors. The three strands relate to software quality, statutory obligations and human-computer interaction. All three strands rely on well respected sources which include the European Council Directive on minimum safety and health requirements for work with display screen equipment, ISO/DIS 9241-10 ...

Use of a Single-Multiple-Single-Mode Fiber Filter for Interrogating Fiber Bragg Grating Strain Sensors with Dynamic Temperature Compensation
(2009)

Abstract:
An interrogation technique for fiber Bragg grating (FBG) strain sensors with dynamic temperature compensation using a single-multiple-single-mode (SMS) fiber filter as a temperature compensating element is presented. Experimental results show that this technique offers a resolution of better than 3:4 με for strain measurements in the range from 0 to 1667 με, and the temperature induced error is as low as 34 με in the temperature range from 10 to 60 °C. The temperature induced error could be further reduced if the temperature sensitivity (the rate of temperature induced wavelength shift) of the SMS filter was closer to that of the FBG sensor. This can be achieved by selecting a multimode fiber for the SMS filter with appropriate parameters. The proposed technique can be modified for simultaneous measurements of strain and temperature with an experimentally achieved resolution of better than 1 °C. © 2009 Optical Society of America Applied Optics, Vol.48, no. 29, p.5451

Use of Collaborative Learning Technology to Support Cross-Faculty Group Learning
(2011)
O'Kane, Colm; McDonnell, Jennifer
Abstract:

The scope of applications of computer supported collaborative learning (CSCL) has grown exponentially in recent years. This group of techniques has been found to be extremely effective as a collaborative tool to inspire scaffolding between students. It is also useful when several academic supervisors wish to view the same project work.

This paper describes the process and the motivation behind the first implementation of a campus pack-based project in Year 3 of Dublin Institute of Technology's (DIT) BSc. in Product Design programme. Issues have been encountered in previous years with this cross-faculty managed project, but this work shows the potential that exists in harnessing technology to unlock the true learning potential of collaborative work at undergraduate level. The paper reviews the collaborative learning field and continues to describe the DIT implementation. This description includes initial hurdles encountered, approaches taken to resolv...

Use of Excel to Obtain Voltammetric Information on Microelectrodes
(1999)

Abstract:

The use of curve fitting for the analysis and interpretation of voltammetric data obtained while working with micro electrodes is discussed as a useful exercise for introducing students to the principle of problem solving using least-squares curve-fitting techniques. The advantages associated with this approach to data processing over the approach where the limiting current (i L) alone is used are discussed and its limitations are highlighted. This technique was applied to the determination of unknown concentrations of ferrocyanide and the most satisfactory recovery of concentrations was found when both the va1ues of the formal potential (EO') and concentration ( C) were varied to match the experimental results with an equation characterizing the current potential curve for a reversible couple. In this case recoveries of 100% ± 5% were obtained for the concentration range 5 X 10--4 to 1 x 10-2 M. It was also found chat Solver was unable to fit the equation when the sum...

Abstract:

The aim of this research was to investigate whether the chemical changes induced by mechanical damage and aging of mushrooms can be (a) detected in the mid-infrared absorption region and (b) identified using chemometric data analysis. Mushrooms grown under controlled conditions were bruise-damaged by vibration to simulate damage during normal transportation. Damaged and non-damaged mushrooms were stored for up to 7 days post-harvest. Principal component analysis of FTIR spectra showed evidence that physical damage had an effect on tissue structure and the aging process. Random forest classification models were used to predict damage in mushrooms producing models with error rates of 5.9 and 9.8% with specific wavenumbers identified as important variables for identifying damage, PLS models were developed producing models with low levels of misclassification. Modeling post-harvest age in mushrooms using random forests and PLS resulted with high error rates and misclassif...

Abstract:

Samples of raw nanotubes are compared to those deposited from solutions to examine separation of nanotube bundles. Single wall nanotubes bundles produced by the arc-discharge and HiPco methods were solubilised in toluene, DMF and 1,2 dichloroethane. Resonant Raman spectroscopy was used to determine if debundling of the tubes sample occurred. The results showed some degree of debundling, best for the 1,2 dichloroethane solvent, which also shows long term solubility.

User Assisted Source Separation Using Non-negative Matrix Factorisation
(2011)
Fitzgerald, Derry
Abstract:

Much research has been carried out on the use of non-negative matrix factorisation for the purpose of musical sound source separation. However, a notable shortcoming of non-negative matrix factorisation is that the recovered basis functions have to be clustered to sound sources for separation to take place. This has proved to be a difficult problem to solve. As a means of overcoming this problem, we introduce an extension to non-negative matrix factorisation which allows a user to guide the sepa- ration by singing, or playing along with, the source they want to separate. This is done through the use of gamma-chain priors. Examples of user assisted separation are also presented

User Quality of Experience-aware Multimedia Streaming over Wireless Home Area Network
(2007)
Muntean, Gabriel-Miro; Cranley, Nicola
Abstract:

For multimedia streaming over wireless networks, there is a trade-off between the capacity of the wireless links and the end-user perceived-quality, which can be affected by the compression scheme used, content characteristics and adaptation algorithm (if any). In this paper, this trade-off is investigated for streaming various motion content multimedia over an IEEE 802.11b-based Wireless-Home Area Network using the Quality-Oriented Adaptation Scheme (QOAS). QOAS performance is compared to that of a non-adaptive scheme when using MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 encoding in terms of average end-user perceived quality, number of streaming sessions concurrently supported, loss rate, delay, jitter and total throughput. Simulation results show that by using QOAS and MPEG-4 encoded streams a much higher number of concurrent streams are supported at an average quality above “good” level on the ITU-T five-point quality scale in comparison with other situations. In this case all the other streami...
