A general purpose electromechanical simulator for switches used in the rehabilitation of communication-impaired people
(2004)
Connolly, Niamh; Burke, Ted; De Paor, Annraoi
Abstract:
The importance of simple mechanical switches in rehabilitation cannot be overstated, particularly in the facilitation of communication and control by people with profound physical disabilities. Many communication and control systems are designed to be operable using a single switch (or a small number of switches). A crucial step in the tailoring of a system to a patient who will operate it in this way is the selection of an appropriate switch, according to their physical abilities. We present a prototype switch simulator, capable of reproducing various types of switching action under computer control. This electromechanical device exhibits a force versus displacement characteristic (possibly incorporating hysteresis) selected by the user on the PC. In this way, the suitability of a variety of switching actions for a patient can be assessed, and the optimal choice identified. Furthermore, for patients with very particular needs, this device can implement switching actions which are d...

A Generalized Nonlinear Model for the Evolution of Low Frequency Freak Waves
(2010)
Blackledge, Jonathan
Abstract:
<p>This paper presents a generalized model for simulating wavefields associated with the sea surface. This includes the case when `freak waves' may occur through an effect compounded in the nonlinear (cubic) Schrodinger equation. After providing brief introductions to linear sea wave models, `freak waves' and the linear and nonlinear Schrodinger equations, we present a unified model that provides for a piecewise continuous transition from a linear to a nonlinear state. This is based on introducing a fractional time derivative to develop a fractional nonlinear partial differential equation with a stochastic source function. In order to explore the characteristics of this equation, we consider a separation of variables approach in order to derive governing equations for the spatial and temporal behaviour.</p> <p>Models for the source function (which, in physical terms, describes the conversion of wind energy into wave energy) are also considered on a separa...

A Generic Approach and Framework for Managing Complex Information
(2011)
Mansour, Essam, (Thesis)
Abstract:
<p>Several application domains, such as healthcare, incorporate domain knowledge into their day-to-day activities to standardise and enhance their performance. Such incorporation produces complex information, which contains two main clusters (active and passive) of information that have internal connections between them. The active cluster determines the recommended procedure that should be taken as a reaction to specific situations. The passive cluster determines the information that describes these situations and other descriptive information plus the execution history of the complex information. In the healthcare domain, a medical patient plan is an example for complex information produced during the disease management activity from specific clinical guidelines. This thesis investigates the complex information management at an application domain level in order to support the day-to-day organization activities. In this thesis, a unified generic approach and framework, called...

A Generic Approach to Computer-based Clinical Practice Guideling Managment using the ECA Rule Paradigm and Active Databases
(2009)
Wu, Bing; Dube, Kudakwashe
Abstract:
<p>The increasing demand for reduced cost and improved quality of service in healthcare has prompted the call for better management of medical knowledge. The main emphasis has been on knowledge that is acquired through experience and medical research and then formalised into Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs). This paper presents a generic approach to CPG information and knowledge management that uses the Event-Condition-Action (ECA) rule paradigm and active databases within a unified management framework. The paper focuses on an approach for facilitating the use and management of CPGs by clinicians through delivering the CPGs at the point-of-care by a computerised mechanism.</p>

A generic approach to supporting the management of computerised clinical guidelines and protocols
(2004)
Dube, Kudakwashe, (Thesis)
Abstract:
<p>Clinical guidelines or protocols (CGPs) are statements that are systematically developed for the purpose of guiding the clinician and the patient in making decisions about appropriate healthcare for specific clinical problems. Using CGPs is one of the most effective and proven ways to attaining improved quality, optimised resource utilisation, cost containment and reduced variation in healthcare practice. CGPs exist mainly as paper-based natural language statements, but are increasingly being computerised. Supporting computerised CGPs in a healthcare environment so that they are incorporated into the routine used daily by clinicians is complex and presents major information management challenges. This thesis contends that the management of computerised CGPs should incorporate their manipulation (operations and queries), in addition to their specification and execution, as part of a single unified management framework. The thesis applies modern advanced database technology t...

A Heat Pump Assisted Shower
(1983)
McGovern, Jim
Abstract:
<p>An energy-efficient water-heating system for a shower is proposed consisting of a low-powered heat pump, a storage tank and an instantaneous heater which, it is felt, may yield a favourable overall cost, in addition to reducing the primary energy consumption. Some preliminary work has been carried out in exploring this concept. It was considered at the outset that an overall coefficient of performance (COP) of 2 should be readily achieved. Values close to this have been realised with the first experimental prototype.</p>

Abstract:
A hybrid fiber optic sensor by integrating polarimetric fiber sensors and fiber Bragg grating sensors for simultaneous strain and temperature measurement is presented in this paper. Two types of polarimetric fiber sensors are used; a Panda fiber and a polarization maintaining photonic crystal fiber. The polarimetric strain sensors give the average strain and temperature information, while the fiber Bragg grating sensors give localized strain information. Two applications of the proposed configuration are also demonstrated in this paper. In the composite materials three fiber sensors are used while for other engineering applications a temperature insensitive polarimetric fiber sensor can be used together with an FBG sensor to measure strain and temperature simultaneously.

Abstract:
A novel hybrid fiber optic sensor based on integration of polarimetric fiber sensors for simultaneous strain and temperature measurement is presented in this paper. Two types of polarimetric fibers are used: a side-hole fiber and a polarization maintaining photonic crystal fiber. The disadvantage of each sensor type can be overcome by using the sensors in a complementary manner to measure temperature independently from average strain.

Abstract:
The preservation of knowledge has been a human endeavour since the dawn of time. Using whatever resources possible, humans have recorded knowledge for the purpose of bequeathing it to the next generations. With each technological advance, it would appear that the resources available for recording knowledge have improved. Not only this, but with each advance, the accessibility and availability to this knowledge has been enhanced; and in our present times, the impact of technology has made it easier than ever before. As with education, the consequence of making knowledge more available and accessible is the creation of more knowledgeable individuals - individuals who live in a modern society, which has been termed the knowledge society. The potential of these knowledgeable individuals or knowledge workers as key assets in the production of services and goods is well recognised. Knowledge management has emerged, hand in hand, with this new breed of worker. As a tool, organisations are ...

A Life Cycle Cost Analysis of Large-scale Thermal Energy Storage Technologies for Buildings using Combined Heat and Power
(2010)
Gaine, Kenneth; Duffy, Aidan
Abstract:
<p>Buildings account for approximately 40% of energy consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in developed economies, of which approximately 55% of building energy is used for heating and cooling. The reduction of building-related GHG emissions is a high international policy priority. For this reason and because there are many technical solutions for this, these polices should involve significant improvements in the uptake of small-scale energy efficient (EE) systems. However the widespread deployment of many technologies, must overcome a number of barriers, one of which is a temporal (diurnal or seasonal) mismatch between supply and demand. Costeffective thermal storage solutions have the potential to improve financial performance, while simultaneously reducing associated GHG emissions. The aim of this paper is to identify existing thermal energy storage (TES) technologies and to present and asses the economic and technical performance of each for a typical large scale ...

A Linear Finite Element Acoustic Fluid-Structure Model of Ultrasonic Angioplasty in Vivo
(2010)
Wylie, Mark; McGuinness, Garrett; Gavin, Graham
Abstract:
<p>The delivery of high-power ultrasonic energy via small diameter wire waveguides represents a new alternative therapy for the treatment of chronic totally occluded arteries (CTOs). This type of energy manifests itself as a mechanical vibration at the distal-tip of the waveguide with amplitudes of vibration up to 60 µm and at frequencies of 20- 50 kHz. Disruption of diseased tissue is reported to be a result of direct mechanical ablation, cavitation, pressure components and acoustic streaming and that ablation was only evident above the cavitation threshold. This work presents a linear finite element acoustic fluid-structure model of an ultrasonic angioplasty waveguide in vivo. The model was first verified against a reported analytical solution for an oscillating sphere. It was determined that 140 elements per wavelength (EPW) were required to predict the pressure profile generated by the wire waveguide distal-tip. Implementing this EPW count, the pressure field surrounding a...

Abstract:
<p>An experimental investigation on liquid crystal coated tapered photonic crystal fiber (PCF) interferometer is presented in this paper. The interferometer is fabricated by tapering a small section of a PCF by collapsing the air holes and thinning down the air hole collapsed region to a micron size. Several interferometers are fabricated from different types of photonic crystal fibers and the temperature dependence studies are carried out to select an intrinsically temperature insensitive interferometer that can be used with liquid crystal (LC) materials. The properties of the LC materials to be used with the tapered PCF interferometers are also discussed. Temperature tuning of the spectral response of the tapered interferometers with different waist diameters coated with high index and low index LC materials are carried out and the characteristics are presented.</p>

A Low Polarization Sensitivity All-fiber Wavelength Measurement System
(2008)
Rajan, G.; Semenova, Y.; Farrell, Gerald; Wang, Q.; Wang, P.
Abstract:
<p>A low polarization-sensitive all-fiber wavelength measurement system using a twisted macro-bend fiber edge filter together with polarization-insensitive (PI) 3-dB coupler is presented. Eliminating the polarization-dependent loss (PDL) is essential when macro-bending single-mode fiber is utilized as an edge filter. A new bending configuration to eliminate the PDL of a fiber edge filter is proposed in this letter by twisting the fiber by 90deg between two bending sections with equal length. The PDL of this configuration retains a low value even while the bending length is increased to achieve a steeper response for the edge filter. This configuration together with a PI 3-dB coupler makes the system to have very low polarization sensitivity and as a result high wavelength accuracy can be achieved.</p>

A Low-involvement Choice Model for Consumer Panel Data
(1987)
Brugha, Cathal; Turley, Darach
Abstract:
<p>The long overdue surge of interest in consumer behaviour texts in low-involvement purchasing has only begun to gather momemtum. It often takes the form of asking whether concepts usually associated with high-involvement purchasing can be applied, albeit in a modified form, to low-involvement purchasing. One such concept is evoked set, that is the range of brands deemed acceptable by a consumer in a particular product area. This has characteristically been associated with consumption involving extensive pre-purchase search and evaluation. The consumer's evoked set is thus the brands he would actually consider purchasing in advance of the purchase event. However, when it comes to regularly purchased, low cost, non durable low-involvement goods, can this evoked set concept be utilised? The authors propose a new measure to gauge brand loyalites of respondents on consumer panels. It draws on the supposition that evoked set may be applied on panels. The measure also strives t...

A macro-bend fiber based wavelength demodulation system for optical fiber sensing applications
(2008)
Rajan, Ginu, (Thesis)
Abstract:
<p>This thesis considers the design and development of a wide range all fiber interrogation system with a rapid measurement capability for extracting reliable measure and information from fiber Bragg grating sensors. Existing passive and active interrogation systems have certain limitations and do not satisfy all requirements. In this thesis a wavelength demodulation system is proposed, based on a macro-bend fiber filter employed in a ratiometric detection scheme. A theoretical model and analysis of an edge filter based ratiometric wavelength measurement (RWM) system is presented. A fiber edge filter is realized by carefully selecting an appropriate bend radius and number of bend turns of a standard single-mode fiber with an applied absorption layer. The calibration and characterization of the system are carried out experimentally and the effect of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the source is studied. It is shown that the SNR limits the measurable wavelength range of the s...

Abstract:
<p>A novel macrobending based all-fiber refractometer sensor with a simple optical configuration is proposed and investigated both theoretically and experimentally. The proposed fiber refractometer sensor consists of a single loop structure of bare macrobending standard singlemode fiber (SMF28) with a selected bending radius and reduced cladding diameter. The well-known scalar approximation theory is employed to theoretically predict the characteristics of the proposed fiber refractometer sensor. An approach to improve the resolution of the refractometer is presented, which shows that the refractometer with a reduced cladding diameter of 81 μm has an experimentally verified resolution of 5.75105 for a refractive index range from 1.4586 to 1.5396 at the wavelength of 1550 nm.</p>

Abstract:
<p>An all-fiber refractive index sensor with a simple configuration is proposed and investigated. The proposed fiber refractometer consists of a full-loop structure of bare high-bend loss singlemode fiber-1060XP, employing the well-known whispering gallery mode (WGM) effect induced by the evanescent wave excitation to measure the refractive index of an external medium. A competitive sensitivity is achieved (average 725.76nm/RIU at a bend diameter of 19.3mm) compared with other fiber-optic sensors, plus benefits resulting from simplicity, low cost and ease of fabrication.</p>

A mapping of entrepreneurship and innovation policy in Ireland.
(2008)
Cooney, Thomas M.
Abstract:
The objective at the centre of the IPREG (Innovative Policy Research for Economic Growth) project is the facilitation of a " network of networks" needed to address one of Europe's critical issues-empirically relevant research on growth policy. IPREG is an established "network of networks" encompassing researchers, policy makers and business people in twelve countries: Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Norway, Poland, Spain, Sweden and UK. The initial stage of the project was to map out the current policies and actors in each country and to develop a comprehensiveness index based upon interviews and survey feedback. This work would then facilitate the diverse debates that occur regarding the production and evaluation of research on policy and policy making in different contexts within Europe. It was envisaged that the scientific impact of the project actions would be the construction of a tanglible knowledge base on the size...

A mapping of ethnic entrepreneurship in Ireland
(2008)
Cooney, Thomas M; Flynn, Anthony
Abstract:
The research findings presented in this report represent the first major attempt to map in a systematic fashion ethnic entrepreneurial activity in Ireland. The rapid transformation of the demographic profile of Ireland in this decade through unprecedented levels of immigration has stimulated debate on the economic and social policy implications of the new multi-racial Ireland. One facet to this policy debate is the potential for non-Irish nationals to bolster indigenous business activity. It was the aim of this research to capture the essential nature of ethnic entrepreneurship in Ireland in 2008 with a view to better informing policy formulation as it concerns ethnic business activity. Two research objectives dictated the scope of this study. The first objective was to determine the rate of business ownership among the main foreign national ethnic groups in Ireland. From a nationwide survey of 1,108 foreign nationals resident in Ireland it was found that 12.6% claim ownership or pa...

A March of Moral Panic?: An Examination Of Reaction To Crime in Ireland in March 2006
(2007)
Maginn, Robin
Abstract:
Moral Panic is a concept that examines disproportionate reaction towards an event or persons. In March of 2006, several events occurred which provoked strong reactions from the media and from politicians. This thesis explores and examines those reactions, and will try to determine if a moral panic could be said to have occurred. This is accomplished through a qualitative reading of the reactions, by identifying themes running through the discourse on crime of the time in question, and by applying indicators of moral panic to the data. The study finds that though the reactions may not necessarily indicate moral panic, coverage of the event in both the political and media spheres proved unsatisfactory, and a recommendation of a need for moderation in future discourse on crime is suggested.

A Method to Measure Reference Strain in FBG Strain Sensor Interrogation System Involving Actuators

Abstract:
A method for reference strain measurement for FBG strain sensor in the testing stage while applying strain using actuators like piezo translators or micro screw is introduced. Unlike conventional methods of surface mounting, in our method the strain gauge is affixed directly to the optical fibre, which allows it to use with systems where the strain is applied directly using actuators while testing the FBG sensing system. Different bonding techniques were tested and a comparison with the results from calculated values are presented. Since the contact area between the fibre and strain gauge is very small a corrected gauge factor is calculated and is used to measure the strain transfer. As a demonstration of the developed method, the strain gauge is used as a reference in an edge filter based FBG sensors interrogation system, where the strain was applied using a micro screw. The measured strain using foil strain gauge affixed to the optical fibre and FBG sensor interrogation system are...
