(Le)agility in Humanitarian Aid Supply Chains
(2010)
Scholten, Kirstin; Sharkey Scott, Pamela; Fynes, Brian
Abstract:
Purpose - This paper explores the concept of agility in the context of supply chains of humanitarian aid (HA) organizations, particularly Non Government Organizations (NGOs). This responds to the increasing pressure on NGOs to use their resources more strategically if they are to gain donor trust and long term commitment. Design/ Methodology/Approach - A literature based approach that extends the commercial supply chain concept of agility to NGOs is combined with the first exploratory semi structured interviews of these concepts with five NGO supply chain directors. Findings – The commercial concept of agility when responding to disaster relief holds strong potential for increasing efficiency and effectiveness, but this application is restrained by the absence of supporting Information Technology (IT) and the relegation of supply chain management (SCM) to the ‘back office’ by NGOs. This has potential implications for NGOs and other humanitarian aid agencies. Research Limitations - ...

Griffin, Kevin A., Dr.; Flanagan, Sheila, Dr.; Kennedy-Burke, Elizabeth; Morrissey, Maeve
Abstract:
The DIT-ACHIEV Model for the Sustainable Management of Tourism has been developed by the School of Hospitality Management and Tourism, Dublin Institute of Technology and is endorsed by the Environmental Protection Agency and Fáilte Ireland. It explores six areas of investigation - Administration, Community, Heritage, Infrastructure, Enterprise and Visitor. The purpose of piloting this DIT- ACHIEV model in Killarney is to test its use with the objective to refine and adjust its methodology, so that it can be applied in any Irish tourism destination. Early indications are that The Model will provide the Irish tourism Industry with a valuable tool for making its product and management far more sustainable. In addition to data such as environmental measurements, information on water, waste, energy, transport, examination of local cultural, environmental and employment statistics, the model requires the undertaking of three dedicated surveys: A Resident Survey A Business Survey A Vi...

3DQ: Threat Dome Visibility Querying on Mobile Devices
(2010)
Carswell, James
Abstract:

3DQ (Three Dimensional Query) is our mobile spatial interaction (MSI) prototype for location and orientation aware mobile devices (i.e. today's sensor enabled smartphones). The prototype tailors a military style threat dome query calculation using MSI with hidden query removal functionality for reducing “information overload” on these off-the-shelf devices. The effect gives a more accurate and expected query result for Location-Based Services (LBS) applications by returning information on only those objects visible within a user’s 3D field-of-view. Our standardised XML based request/response design enables any mobile device, regardless of operating system and/or programming language, to access the 3DQ web-service interfaces.

A Review of the Different Methods for Assessing Standing Balance
(2001)
Browne, Jacinta; O'Hare, N. J.
Abstract:

This paper is a review of the balance assessment methods currently used to evaluate standing balance. Most of the presently available instrumentation appears to be more suited to research laboratories than to routine clinical situations. Functional assessments of balance appear to be the quickest test to administer and do not require expensive equipment however only gross changes in balance can be detected making them suitable as a screening tool for identifying subject’s needing more thorough evaluation. Force platforms appear to be most suited balance assessment instrumentation to the clinical situation since it produces a real time display and can detect small changes in subject’s ability to maintain their balance making them suitable for thorough evaluations of balance and for monitoring patient’s progress.

A Bandwidth Aware Modification to the DSR Routing Protocol for Wireless Mesh Networks
(2009)
Ramadhan, Mustafa; Davis, Mark
Abstract:

This work proposes a bandwidth aware cross-layer modification to the DSR routing protocol. We include the Access Efficiency Factor (AEF) parameter in addition to the hop-count in the routing discovery mechanism. AEF is a measure to the local availability of bandwidth at a node. Employing the AEF as a metric in the routing discovery mechanism attempts to avoid routing through a congested area in the network. In this modification, we impose a limit on the hop-count in order to control the delay time in the network. The path selection procedure operates by finding a path with the highest minimum AEF value. We have utilized the OPNET modeler simulator to investigate the performance of the modified DSR protocol on a series of randomly generated network topologies of different hopcount limits. The simulator was run twice for each network topology. The first run implemented the standard DSR algorithm while the second implemented the modified DSR protocol. The average global throug...

A Bend Loss Based Singlemode Fiber Micro-displacement Sensor
(2010)
Wang, Pengfei; Semenova, Yuliya; Wu, Qiang; Farrell, Gerald
Abstract:

An all-fiber displacement sensor with a simple configuration is proposed and investigated theoretically and experimentally. The proposed fiber displacement sensor consists of a half-loop structure of high-bend loss singlemode fiber-1060XP. A ratiometric power measurement system for interrogating the proposed sensor is also presented. By measuring the change in ratio of bend loss in the ratiometric measurement system, a change in displacement can be measured assuming the ratiometric system is calibrated. The proposed macrobending fiber based displacement sensor achieves a competitive resolution of circa 0.33 μm and also benefits from simplicity compared with the conventional fiber Bragg grating based displacement sensor. The bend loss fiber based displacement sensing system is sensitive to temperature, but the ratio response has a linear variation with temperature, which can be corrected by a suitable displacement correction process. Corresponding investigation on the temper...

A biochemical study of Atlantic salmon (salmo salar) skin mucus proteins during smoltification (1999 and 2001)
(2004)
Kennedy, Paul, (Thesis)
Abstract:

Smoltification is a complex process which involves morphological, physiological and behavioural changes which allow Atlantic salmon to migrate from fresh water to seawater. The biological interface between the salmon and their environment is the mucus coat, which is composed of a wide variety of biochemical secretions primarily from goblet cells on the surface of the epithelial layers, but also other cells such as sacciform cells and acidophilic granular cells. Skin mucus has been implicated in a diversity of roles including respiration, osmoregulation, reproduction, excretion, disease resistance, communication, feeding and protection ( Shepard, 1994). Further investigation is warranted with regard to the role of the mucus proteins in smoltification. This study is part of an ongoing investigation into the role of mucus proteins during smoltification using electrophoresis (1-D and 2-D). Mucus samples were taken from Atlantic salmon at the salmon management service. The sampl...

A biochemical study of mucus lysomzyme, proteins andplasma thyroxine of atlanctic salmon (salmo salar) during smoltification
(2004)
Fagan, Maresa, (Thesis)
Abstract:

Atlantic salmon prepare to migrate from fresh water to sea water during a phase of great physiological change known as smoltification. In the context of stock enhancement programmes and the conservation of Atlantic salmon stocks, the release of smolts from freshwater to sea is of major significance. Accordingly, this study set out to monitor some of the physiological and biochemical changes, which allow the Atlantic salmon to migrate from freshwater to seawater. Our research focused on skin mucus as a possible candidate for the development of a non invasive test and sought to elucidate biochemical or significant protein changes in mucus during parr-smolt transformation. Mucus and blood were sampled from hatchery reared Atlantic salmon during smoltification in 1996 and 1997 to investigate changes in mucus proteins and enzymes and to monitor plasma thyroxine. Mucus protein analysis for both years was carried out by SDS-PAGE. The mucus protein profiles for individual fish with...

A Case Study in Modeling and Process Control: the Control of a Pilot Scale Heating and Ventilation System
(2006)
Mooney, Robin P.; O'Dwyer, Aidan
Abstract:

This paper details the control of a pilot scale laboratory heating and ventilation system. The system is represented in 2x2 multi-input, multi-output (MIMO) form. A process reaction curve identification technique was used to model (in first order lag plus delay - FOLPD - form) the flow process and temperature process portions of the system, over a range of operating conditions. Tests revealed that both processes were continuously non-linear. A gain scheduler with static decoupling was designed, using look-up tables, to continuously interpolate for the most suitable proportional-integral (PI) or proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller settings and decoupler gains. The contribution of this paper is the careful application, using well-known techniques, of a complete controller design cycle for a laboratory scale system.

A Case Study of Student Engagement in Collaborative Group Learning in a Blended Community Based (Service) Learning Module
(2009)
McGarrigle, John
Abstract:
A participatory action research case study employed mixed methods to examine student collaboration and engagement in a Community Based (Service) learning module. A quasi experimental testing of Coates (2007) typology of student engagement found little agreement between students and lecturers in assigning the terms, passive, intense, independent or collaborative to student postings to discussion fora. Qualitative analysis of discussion threads using conversation analysis provided evidence for collaboration in deeper knowledge construction when supported by lecturers’ contributions. Discourse analysis examined interviews with students and focused on their constructions of community revealing the beneficial role of developing multiple perspectives to integrate their learning experiences. A possible role for examining facilitative communication in small group learning and the Zone of Proximal Development is suggested and an argument for the role of student centred approaches in Pedagogi...

Abstract:

Spam filtering is a particularly challenging machine learning task as the data distribution and concept being learned changes over time. It exhibits a particularly awkward form of concept drift as the change is driven by spammers wishing to circumvent spam filters. In this paper we show that lazy learning techniques are appropriate for such dynamically changing contexts. We present a case-based system for spam filtering that can learn dynamically. We evaluate its performance as the case-base is updated with new cases. We also explore the benefit of periodically redoing the feature selection process to bring new features into play. Our evaluation shows that these two levels of model update are effective in tracking concept drift

Abstract:

Clearly, machine learning techniques can play an important role in filtering spam email because ample training data is available to build a robust classifier. However, spam filtering is a particularly challenging task as the data distribution and concept being learned changes over time. This is a particularly awkward form of concept drift as the change is driven by spammers wishing to circumvent the spam filters. In this paper we show that lazy learning techniques are appropriate for such dynamically changing contexts. We present a case-based system for spam filtering called ECUE that can learn dynamically. We evaluate its performance as the case-base is updated with new cases. We also explore the benefit of periodically redoing the feature selection process to bring new features into play. Our evaluation shows that these two levels of model update are effective in tracking concept drift.

A Chemical and Sensorial Analysis of the Flavour of Irish Grown Organic and Conventional Tomatoes
(2011)
Gilsenan, Clare; Burke, Roisin; Barry Ryan, Catherine
Abstract:
Tomato flavour is generally attributed to aroma factors, detected by the nose, and taste factors detected by the tongue. The aim of this study was to examine if there are differences in the flavour of Irish grown organic and conventional tomatoes (cv Amoroso). Three batches of organic tomatoes and three batches of conventional tomatoes were tested, using chemical and sensory analysis, each month for three months (July, August and September) during the growing season. GC-MS (n=6 each month) volatiles, pH (n=9 each month) values, and sensory analysis scores for aroma and taste (n=42 each month) were recorded. Markers of tomato aroma intensity and acceptability, overall taste acceptability, sweetness and sourness were identified in both organic and conventional tomatoes using GC-MS. Differences between organic and conventional tomatoes were recorded in each of these categories. Acidity values ranged from 4.2 +/- .04 for organic tomatoes to 4.27 +/- .07 for conventional tomatoes. A comp...

A classification of techniques for the compensation of time delayed processes. Part 1: Parameter optimised controllers
(1999)
O'Dwyer, Aidan; Ringwood, John
Abstract:
An extensive literature exists on the compensation of time delayed processes. It is possible to identify themes that are common to many of the available techniques. The intention of the two parts of this paper is to provide a framework against which the literature may be viewed; Part 1 of the paper considers the use of parameter optimised controllers for the compensation problem, with Part 2 of the paper considering the use of structurally optimised compensators. Conclusions are drawn at the end of Part 2.

A combinatorial creativity approach to composing traditional Irish reels.
(2007)
Zheng, Nan; Duggan, Bryan
Abstract:
In this paper we describe a system that uses a corpus of 864 traditional Irish reels as input into an algorithm that composes new tunes. The system performs a structural analysis of the tunes in the corpus and also counts n-gram note sequences in the tunes. It then recombines n-gram note sequences together in structures from the corpus to generate new tunes. We further present our evaluation of the generated tunes as performed by 29 domain experts.
