300 years of copyright: have we gone full circle? On the use of technology to address limitations in distributing public performance broadcast royalties.
(2009)
Healy, Ron; Timoney, Joseph
Abstract:
This paper briefly examines the concept and rationale of Copyright at the time of its inception and considers whether current legislation and, more distinctly, the administration of some of the rights specified by Copyright legislation has created a situation whereby authors of works in the music industry are being adversely affected and even exploited by such schemes thereby completing the circle by returning many authors to the point which made Copyright legislation necessary. This paper also outlines the design and implementation of a completely automatic, open and transparent blind-detection digital audio watermarking system that will enable automatic monitoring and reporting of public performance of both digital and analogue radio and television transmissions using modern computer technology in order to generate accurate royalty distributions to ‘authors’ in order to administer their rights more equitably.

Best and worst practice: a case study of qualitative gender balance in Irish broadcasting
(2017)
O'Brien, Anne; Suiter, Jane
Abstract:
This article focuses on the gender of voices chosen as sources and presenters of radio news coverage in Ireland. The study examines the best and worst case studies across public and private sector broadcasters and argues that the question of gender balance in broadcasting goes beyond the simple issue of quantitatively proportionate participation to require a more complex and qualitatively fair and balanced presentation of women within news programming. We find a very clear gender bias with male-dominated coverage in both public and private sectors but with greater stereotyping by the latter.

Cultivating Habitats of Meaning - Broadcasting, Participation and Interculturalism
(2003)
Titley, Gavan
Abstract:
At the time of writing, buenas vistas of the digital landscape ar e far fewer than when this publication was first conceived. The last year (2002) has witnessed high profile European digital failures, a fraught domestic franchising process and a serious financial crisis at RTE. These factors, combined with the as yet ambiguous direction of post- election policy, conspire to make the future of digital terrestrial television very uncertain. More broadly, reports from Ireland and abroad suggest that there is still a significant battle for the ‘hearts and minds’ of potential digital converts. At least partially this involves convincing people that proposed analogue switch-offs are somehow in their best interests, and not heavy-handed (and failing) attempts at technological determinism. Nevertheless, the uncertain appeal and future of a service that may not be able to offer anything more than a diet of re-runs and interactive shopping for ab- crunchers creates at least a usable vacuum. The continuing story of Irish television drama: tracking the tiger

The continuing story of Irish television drama: tracking the tiger
(2004)
Sheehan, Helena
Abstract:
Irish Television Drama: A Society and Its Stories appeared in 1987. It traced 25 years (1962-1987) of Irish society in a process of social transformation and the role of television drama in a struggle to define the nature of that process. This book is a sequel to that, advancing the story another 15 years (1987-2002). From Fair City to Family to Father Ted, it examines television drama in the time of the tiger, striving to come to terms with the flux of Irish life in an increasingly globalised world, in a time of significant changes in the climate of broadcasting and its structures of storytelling.

The copyright regulatory system in Ireland: its development and effects, 1700-1990
(2001)
O'Gorman, Michael
Abstract:
This study investigates the formulation o f copyright regulation in Ireland, within the administrative and political structure, in the con text of wider cultural and political debates in the period between the eighteenth century and the late twentieth century. Political, cultural, industrial and economic inputs to the formation of policy are identified and analysed. A critical examination of the development of the country’s copyright regulatory system is provided, in order to give an assessment of its effects on specific Irish cultural industries in each of the major periods which were researched. The printing and publishing industries are a consistent focus, but this is extended in later chapters to include broadcasting and some developing new media. The influence of copyright legislation on the balance between the development of the cultural industries in Ireland and the importation of cultural goods from outside Ireland is demonstrated in parallel with this assessment. A lack of...

The parameters of the permissible: how Scrap Saturday got away with it
(1992)
Sheehan, Helena
Abstract:
Scrap Saturday was a satirical radio production running on RTE from October 1990 to December 1991. It was much discussed at the time and has lived on in popular memory since then. This article examines how it pushed out the boundaries of what could could be broadcast in Ireland.

To the Crucible II: a further Irish engagement with the Greek crisis and the Greek left
(2013)
Sheehan, Helena
Abstract:
“Things have gone very quiet in Greece, haven’t they?” So many people said that to me in the past six months or so. I responded that there was a lot going on, even if international media weren’t covering it. There were civil mobilisations of teachers and transport workers, as well as rising unemployment, emigration and impoverishment, being met with continuing protest, strikes, occupations. Even so, I sensed a lull in the rhythm of resistance, since the big demonstrations opposing the passage of the third memorandum last autumn. Obviously people couldn’t keep going at that pitch all the time, but how many were succumbing to exhaustion, despair, defeat? How many were quietly going about their work in solidarity networks, policy development, political education?
