Abstract:
The current study examined the EEG of young, old and old declined adults performing a visual paired associate task. In order to examine the eVects of encoding context and stimulus repetition, target pairs were presented on either detailed or white backgrounds and were repeatedly presented during both early and late phases of encoding. Results indicated an increase in P300 amplitude in the right parietal cortex from early to late stages of encoding in older declined adults, whereas both younger adults and older controls showed a reduction in P300 amplitude in this same area from early to late phase encoding. In the right hemisphere, stimuli encoded with a white background had larger P300 amplitudes than stimuli presented with a detailed background; however, in the left hemisphere, in the later stages of encoding, stimuli presented with a detailed background had larger amplitudes than stimuli presented with a white background. Abstract:
'A budget is not simply one facet of a plan, nor is it merely an expression of organisational policy: it is also a control mechanism' (Meredith and Mantel, 1995). Following an extensive literature review on budgeting within Corporations and Third Level Educational Institutions a mail survey questionnaire on the subject of budgeting and ERP control systems was sent to a selection of universities and third level institutions in the Republic of Ireland and the United Kingdom. The comparisons between budgeting within corporations and the third level educational sector are examined as well as the changing attitudes towards the 'traditional' budgeting methodologies. The emerging role ERP and information technology is having on budgeting processes is also investigated. Abstract:
Event-related potentials (ERPs) are indicators of brain activity related to cognitive processes. They can be de- tected from EEG signals and thus constitute an attractive non-invasive option to study cognitive information pro- cessing. The P300 wave is probably the most celebrated example of an event-related potential and it is classically studied in connection to the odd-ball paradigm experi- mental protocol, able to consistently provoke the brain wave. We propose the use of P300 detection to identify the scientific interest in a large set of images and train a computer with machine learning algorithms using the subject’s responses to the stimuli as the training data set. As a first step, we here describe a number of experiments designed to relate the P300 brain wave to the cognitive processes related to placing a scientific judgment on a picture and to study the number of images per seconds that can be processed by such a system.

Abstract:
The role of cognition is becoming increasingly central to our understanding of the complexity of walking gait. In particular, higher-level executive functions are suggested to play a key role in gait and fall-risk, but the specific underlying neurocognitive processes remain unclear. Here, we report two experiments which investigated the cognitive and neural processes underlying older adult gait and falls. Experiment 1 employed a dual-task (DT) paradigm in young and older adults, to assess the relative effects of higher-level executive function tasks (n-Back, Serial Subtraction and visuo-spatial Clock task) in comparison to non-executive distracter tasks (motor response task and alphabet recitation) on gait. All DTs elicited changes in gait for both young and older adults, relative to baseline walking. Significantly greater DT costs were observed for the executive tasks in the older adult group. Abstract:
High-density event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded during an object recognition task which involved task-irrelevant changes in the location of studied objects. Participants categorised objects as studied or novel while data were analysed to ascertain the effect of the location changes on performance and waveform topography. Our results indicate that humans can classify objects faster and more accurately when using implicit spatial memory. Individual differences observed in object recognition proficiency were absent if objects were presented in their ‘correct’ location. In a second experiment we replicated the behavioural findings while manipulating viewpoint to discount scene recognition as an underlying factor. We propose a model which includes activation of the right medial temporal lobe prior to P300 elicitation to account for the prophylactic effect of implicit processing on object recognition. Abstract:
With the increase of digitalisation, data in social media are often seen as more updated and realistic than the information system representations. Due to the fast changes in the real world and the increasing Big Social media data, there is usually certain misalignment between the social media and information system in the enterprise such as ERP, therefore there can be data deficiencies or data quality problems in the information systems, which is caused by the differences between the external social media and internal information system. In this paper, underpinned by the work of ontological data quality from Wang and Wand 1996, we investigate a set of data quality problems between two representations - Social Media and ERP. We further discuss how ERP system can be improved from the data quality perspective.
