A study of the use of Twitter by students for lecture engagement and discussion
(2014)
Tiernan, Peter
Abstract:
Research indicates that student engagement with lectures, and participation in discussion and debate, greatly improve their learning and experience of University. The nature of some lectures means they can lack opportunities for interaction and active learning. For this reason it can be difficult for some students, especially students new to University, to fully engage in lectures, and interact with their peers. This study attempts to use Twitter as a means of increasing these opportunities for interaction and engagement for students, especially those who may lack the confidence to engage traditionally. As a first step, the study analyses the use of Audience Response Systems to understand the role technology can play in providing opportunities for interaction. Following this, a review of experiments conducted using Twitter is carried out. While there is a dearth of research in this area, these cases provide some valuable insights into the use of this technology and its integration i...

An inquiry into the current and future uses of digital video in University teaching
(2013)
Tiernan, Peter
Abstract:
Research indicates that student use of digital video has increased dramatically in recent years, both for personal and academic use; suggesting an opportunity to further incorporate its use in education. Educators too have recognised this trend, and see the value in providing students with academic video content. This inquiry begins by examining current uses of digital video in a wide range of educational settings, to establish the role it plays in supporting and enhancing student learning. Following this, some of the challenges present in the literature are outlined, specifically the challenges of providing relevant video content, and developing teaching and learning methodologies for use with digital video. Future opportunities and directions for the use of video in education are then examined and discussed, with attention given to the prospect of academic online video platforms. In the methodology section, the process of integrating digital videos into lectures is explained, alon...

An investigation into environmental waste enforcement in Ireland
(2014)
Palomo Navarro, Alvaro; McDermott, Aidan; Dooley, John; Farrell, Ronan
Abstract:
Despite a number of campaigns conducted in Ireland to increase awareness about appropriate waste management, waste enforcement is still a significant issue. Decisions such as the privatisation of waste collection services and the introduction of new waste charges have contributed to some of the classic waste enforcement issues, like illegal dumping. In addition, the current economic recession affects the resources that local authorities have available to implement enforcement actions. In order to analyse the current situation of waste enforcement in Ireland, a survey was carried out amongst the 34 environmental departments within the Irish local authorities. This paper presents the survey findings. From the results, the principal current waste enforcement issues are extracted and compared with previous studies in the field. In addition, an analysis of the resources employed with regard to technology, personnel, legal prosecutions and best practices is also performed. The technologie...

An Investigation of Students' Attitudes to Science, Mathematics and the Use of Technology in Lower Secondary Education
(2019)
Burke O'Connell, Niamh; Dempsey, Majella; O'Shea, Ann
Abstract:
This paper explores lower secondary school students‟ attitudes to mathematics and science, to the teaching and learning of these subjects and the use of technology in the classroom. The data analyzed in this paper were obtained as part of an international project, Formative Assessment in Science and Mathematics Education (FaSMEd), which examined whether technologically enhanced formative assessment practice could improve the attitude and attainment of learners in science and mathematics at lower secondary level. This paper is focused on data from a survey and Q sort activities which investigated students‟ viewpoints in the context of mathematics and science classes in Ireland. The analysis showed that in general students have a positive attitude and self-image about learning science and mathematics, however the science students had a significantly more positive view of the subject, of their ability, and of the use of technology than their mathematics peers. The Q sort data showed th...

Buys, Roselien; Claes, Jomme; Walsh, Deirdre; Cornelis, Nils; Budts, Werner; Woods, Catherine; Moran, Kieran; Cornelissen, Véronique
Abstract:
Background Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) can slow or reverse the progression of cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, uptake of community-based CR is very low. E-cardiology, e-health and technology solutions for physical activity uptake and monitoring have evolved rapidly and have potential in CVD management. However, it is unclear what the current technology usage is of CVD patients, and their needs and interests for technology enabled CR. Methods A technology usage questionnaire was developed and completed by patients from a supervised ambulatory CR program and an adult congenital heart disease clinic and from two community-based CR programs. Results were described and related with age, gender and educational level by Spearman correlations. Results Of 310 patients, 298 patients (77 % male; mean age 61,7 ± 14,5 years) completed at least 25 questions of the survey and were included in the analysis (completion rate 96 %). Most (97 %) patients had a mobile phone and used the internet...

Challenging times: some thoughts on the professional identity of the academic librarian
(2007)
Antonesa, Mary
Abstract:
This article reviews the professional identity of the academic librarian within higher education in the 21st century. It considers the challenges that libraries and library staff face in supporting learning. Massification and technological advancements are two key changes that have signnificantly impacted on library users and library usage. This article will review these developements and will focus in particular on how they have transformed the professional identity of the librarian working in higher education. 'Librarians function in a series of larger enviroments and these enviroments are dealing with a growing number of contexts for information. This article suggests that the concept of librarian as teacher is increasingly strengthening in library discourse and that this role will shape the future professional identity of the librarian working in higher education.

Conceptualising Trust : A Literature Review (NIRSA) Working Paper Series. No. 40
(2008)
De Paoli, Stefano; Kerr, Aphra
Abstract:
In this paper we lay some theoretical foundations for examining governance, users and trust in online environments. Trust has been a central concern in the social sciences since, at least, the pioneering work of Georg Simmel's “The Philosophy of Money”, in which the author described trust as fundamental for the integration of the society. Later sociologists – like Niklas Luhmann and Anthony Giddens -, have attended to the problem of trust, clearly relating the concept to the issue of “risk in modern societies”. The goal of this paper is not to provide an exhaustive survey of 3 the sociological literature in this area but rather to begin to explore different disciplinary conceptions of trust. The PRTLI funded project from which this paper has emerged is an interdisciplinary team of mathematicians, computer scientists, engineers, designers and sociologists and it emerged early on that people had different understandings of the key challenges facing the internet, particularly as t...

Crafting Code: Gender, Coding and Spatial Hybridity in the Events of PyLadies Dublin. The Programmable City Working Paper 19
(2016)
Maalsen, Sophia; Perng, Sung-Yueh
Abstract:
In this paper we look at the integration of the digital and the resurgent interest in crafting artefacts. We do this by focusing on the work, relationships and spaces occupied by Pyladies Dublin - a coding group intended for women to learn and 'craft' code in the programming language of Python. Pyladies offers an interesting and fruitful case study as it intersects gender, relations of making and places of making, nested firmly within the digital world. The relations of making within the Pyladies group provides salient insight into the production of code, gender and space. Pyladies is predominantly attended by women with the focus to encourage women to become more active members and leaders of the Python community. By producing code in a friendly space, the group also actively works towards producing coding subjectivities and hybrid, mobile spatiality, seeking to produce coding and technology culture that is diverse and gender equitable. We base our ethnographic study to s...

Cultivating Campus Citizens, the Economy and Technology: On the New Alchemy in Higher Education.
(2006)
Harpur, John
Abstract:
Writing philosophically about the purposes and values of higher education is a delicate process and problematic to boot. No amount of admiration can conceal the present funding concerns of higher education institutions. Some facts of the matter require acknowledgment, though more in the interests of common sense than peace of mind. Throughout the developed world higher education funding is under increasing scrutiny. Administrations have responded by examining models of reform and transformation to preserve their institutions. These models are giving rise to a ‘change agenda’ promoting greater efficiency (reform) and novel configurations of disciplines (transform). Changes across the sector are deconstructing ancient academic divisions. There is uncertainty about what will be different in the aftermath of change. Merely arguing against change, in the expectation that it will be convincingly deflected, is a Sisyphean task. The range of interests with attachments to the sector makes pu...

Emotional streaming and transconnectivity: Skype and emotion practices in transnational families in Ireland
(2015)
King O'Riain, Rebecca
Abstract:
In this article I explore how transnational families, living in Ireland, use Skype to stay in touch with their loved ones. From 2010 to 2012, data were collected from a purposive, but broad sample of 36 qualitative ethnographic interviews with mixed couples (one partner identifies as Irish and one does not), throughout various parts of the Republic of Ireland. I outline how the use of Skype allows transnational families to create spaces of transconnectivity as they practise simultaneous and ongoing belonging across significant temporal and geographic distances. This affects how people ‘do’ emotions. These emotion practices often consist not only of ‘affect storage’ but also of what I call emotional streaming, promoting ongoing interaction over distance, which includes keeping Skype turned on for long periods of time. Through these attempts to try to recreate everyday practices via continuous use of Skype, transnational emotions of love and longing are deintensified.

Entrepreneurial Renaissance: Cities striving towards an Era of Rebirth and Revival
(2017)
Formica, Piero
Abstract:
This book explores the parallels between the Renaissance during the 14th to 16th centuries and the upheavals in human and physical sciences in the 21st Century that herald an insurgent entrepreneurial renaissance. The first Renaissance, conceived and developed in an urban environment, with the Medici family in Florence as pioneers, was a melting pot of art, culture, science and technology. It is in that context that entrepreneurship derived from artisan tradition and, hence, customized, was born to meet the demands and anticipate the needs of individual consumers. Starting with the mechanical technologies of the first industrial revolution, art, culture and science became separated from entrepreneurship. The latter took on Fordist features which depersonalized and, therefore, standardized the producer-consumer relationship. The emerging model of entrepreneurship returns to its origins in customization (e.g., 3D printing technologies, sharing/on-demand economy) strongly linked to the...

Experiences of using iPads in physical education teacher education
(2019)
Marron, Susan; Coulter, Maura
Abstract:
We live in an increasingly technology- driven world. Most individuals under the age of 25 have grown up with technology readily available to them. They are consistently having technology integrated into their personal and social lives. As such, they are comfortable with the use of technology and even expect the use of technology in most areas of their lives. The purpose of technology for many university students is to communicate, whether through applications such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Snapchat or Instagram when communicating with peers, or through email and online student learning portals such as Moodle or Blackboard when communicating with faculty members. This chapter explores how two initial teacher educators (ITEs) became empowered, through situated learning, to use iPads as a pedagogical tool to enhance learning in pre- service generalist teachers’ elementary physical education modules. The process of learning how to integrate technology into pre- service teachers’ teaching p...

Abstract:
The recent technological revolution has produced a new type of adult learner. This thesis will examine the educational needs of this new learner, and suggest ways in which adult educational practice can adapt in order to meet these needs. In doing so it will examine the concepts of digital game-based learning and the "gamificaiton" of adult education and training, in the context of Howard Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences and Paulo Freire's problem-posing approach to education.

How can I use video to improve teacher engagement with my school’s abundant ICT equipment?
(2011)
Sloyan, Laura
Abstract:
This paper examines how video can be used to enhance teacher engagement with ICT as a teaching tool. The Connect School Project, South Dublin County Council’s ubiquitous computing initiative, equipped St. Aidan’s with a vast amount of information and communication technologies (ICT). A review of appropriate literature indicated that the use of such technologies in class could lead to effective teaching and learning environments, increase student self-esteem and could bridge the ‘digital-divide’ that might exist between students in disadvantaged areas and those in more affluent communities. Through two cycles of enquiry, I planned and produced a video which modelled how the laptops and associated hard and software could be used effectively in class. The video aimed to represent all stakeholders in the school: management, teachers and students. In this way a top-down endorsement of the use of ICT as a teaching and learning tool was communicated. I feel that if teachers are to embrace ...

How to sell your soul and still get into Heaven: Steven Covey’s epiphany‐inducing technology of effective selfhood
(2009)
Cullen, John G.
Abstract:
Steven Covey’s The 7 habits of highly effective people, one of the most influential and popular contemporary self-help texts, has resulted in the development a large multinational consulting business, several spin-off texts, and much imitation since its publication in 1989. An examination of the text, informed by Critical Discourse Analysis, is conducted with a view to unearthing the textual, discursive and socio-cultural practices that have enabled the work and its message to become so popular. 7 habits is an epiphanogenic (or epiphany-inducing) technology emerging from an ‘effectiveness’ discipline supported by three socio-cultural trends: the postmodern, saturated self; the coming of neo-liberal society and the financialization of the self; and the subjective turn. Covey’s discipline of effectiveness aims to produce a self that is simultaneously de-saturated, financialized and expressivist, but supportive of conservative, universalist and late capitalist modes of being.

Identifying opportunities for supporting caregivers of persons with dementia through information and communication technology
(2012)
McHugh, Joanna Edel; Wherton, Joseph P.; Prendergast, David; Lawlor, Brian A.
Abstract:
With the demographic shift towards an older population, the contribution made by informal caregivers of persons with dementia is becoming increasingly important. The ongoing demands of the caring role can often impact mental health and physical well-being. Information and communication technology (ICT) may offer new ways of reducing caregiver burden through information provision and social contact. Interviews were conducted with 14 spouse caregivers of persons with dementia. Grounded theory analysis of interview transcripts revealed specific areas where ICT could help. These are summarised under three main themes: ‘Support needed’ (education and informal), ‘social isolation’ (leaving the house and sustaining networks) and the ‘relationship’ between patient and caregiver (disappearance and interaction). The findings demonstrate the importance of consulting caregivers to ensure that technology design is grounded in an understanding of the problems being addressed.

Interfaces and divisions in the Dublin Docklands 'Smart District'. The Programmable City - Working Paper 37
(2018)
Heaphy, Liam
Abstract:
The study of physical and social divisions in divided societies has long been an area of study, such as the continued usage of ‘peace walls’ in Belfast, hostile architecture to prevent anti-social behaviour and rough sleeping, and the securitisation of private spaces. In the context of a new drive to create a smart district, this paper looks at the relationship between smart urbanism and planning, and at the spatial and social divisions between a new ‘gentrifying’ and well-educated community in the Dublin Docklands and established communities in the area. The Dublin Docklands redevelopment marks a significant break from a pattern of suburbanisation and inner-city decline and repurposes part of the former port area as a city centre extension. The paper accounts for the reshaping of the Dublin Docklands as a ‘smart district’ in collaboration with the city authorities, based on over thirty semi-structured interviews and participant-observation at consultation events. It argues that red...

International Regulatory Regimes for Nanotechnology

Abstract:
This paper represents a very early stage of a collaborative research project on transnational NT regulation. In this project, we seek to apply a multidisciplinary perspective to the question of regulation of nanotechnology (NT). We begin in Section I by considering the nature of NT and some risks it may pose as it is more fully developed and utilized over time. We next consider the nature of transnational "regulation," suggesting the range of legal, institutional and substantive forms this term can encompass. Because NT and its regulation are (like our project) at such early stages of development, we emphasize the importance of regulatory flexibility. In Section II, we consider a series of strategic choices that must be faced in designing transnational regulation in any issue area, including NT; these include the level and scope of regulation, the actors authorized to promulgate regulatory norms, the legal and institutional form of regulation, and finally its substantive...

Rethinking the role of users in ICT design: Reflections for the internet
(2009)
Kerr, Aphra; De Paoli, Stefano; Storni, Cristiano
Abstract:
This paper reports on work from an interdisciplinary project exploring the design of future telecommunications services, networks and applications, particularly focusing on the Internet1. A starting point for this work is our contention that users and technology are co-constructed in the design process and that in some cases it is difficult to distinguish between designers and users since users may play a variety of roles. Some academics argue that the future of the Internet depends on controlling and limiting what users do. Others argue that the future of the Internet will depend on maintaining its openness and enabling users. In our project we seek to critically explore these assertions and empirically examine the role of the user in internet design. This paper outlines some key concepts and presents two case studies to support our approach.

Abstract:
Estimates suggest that Ireland will have 50,000 people with dementia by 2016 and over 100,000 by 2036. Combined with European total costs estimated in 2005 at €130 billion. In the absence of a cure for dementia there is a real need to develop pervasive, user-centered technologies to enhance the well-being and quality of life of people with dementia. This study explores the use of Microsoft SenseCam images within the principles of Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST) to engage people with early stage dementia in meaningful discussion. The SenseCam intervention, like the CST approach, is aimed at general enhancement of quality of life and global cognitive and social functioning.

Subsidising Accessibility
(2015)
Ferri, Delia
Abstract:
Accessible technology encompasses a series of different universally designed and assistive products. The market for these products is wide and highly diversified. However, a common trend can be identified: Private industry is hesitant to engage in experimental products which require massive development and production costs, and is reluctant to invest in developing goods without a clear consumer demand. In this context, the role of public subsidies is of key importance. This article aims to explore whether and to what extent accessible technology has been fostered under the current EU legal framework, and to investigate the potential role of State aid in the future. In particular,t he article discusses whether accessibility has been taken into consideration in the evaluation of support schemes by the Commission (especially under Article 107(3)(c) TFEU), and whether there is the opportunity to consider it. Particular attention is paid to aid for R&D in the field of technology, and...

Abstract:
In spite of its recognition as a fundamental human right, privacy is sometimes criticised as an anachronistic value in modern life [James Rule, Privacy in Peril (OUP, 2007) xi]. While the prominence of this view has lessened in the wake of the Snowden revelations and increased public concern with online privacy [Maria Helen Murphy, ‘The Pendulum Effect: Comparisons Between the Snowden Revelations and the Church Committee. What are the Potential Implications for Europe?’ (2014) 23(2) Information and Communications Technology Law 192], the right continues to struggle for support when it is portrayed as being in competition with national security, personal safety, and economic prosperity [Daniel Solove, ‘“I’ve Got Nothing to Hide” and other Misunderstandings of Privacy’ (2007) 44 San DLR 745]. As developments in technology continue to threaten the right to privacy, interest in technological solutions to privacy problems continues to grow. This article seeks to consider current privacy ...
