Abstract:
This study investigates the relationship between cultural values and shared leadership preferences, using a sample of 357 potential globally dispersed team members. A signi fi cant positive relationship between both horizontal individualism and horizontal collectivism and shared leadership preferences is identi fi ed. We also fi nd signi fi cant dif- ferences in individual-level cultural values between Asian and non-Asian respondents. Shared leadership preferences exhibited fewer differences, suggesting the possibility for sharing leadership in multicultural teams. Our fi ndings add to the literature by detailing the relationship between cultural values and shared leadership preferences, and furthering our understanding of contemporary team leadership preferences among Asians and non- Asians.

Abstract:
Businesses are coordinated organizations, and cooperation among employees reduces over- all organizational costs. Understanding how important cooperation is among different cultures is important, as business becomes increasingly global. However, cross-cultural literature on cooperation deals with firm alliances, joint ventures, and other firm inter- relationships, but not on societal differences in cooperation. Is cooperation similar across cultures? Using proxies, this study sought to operationalize cooperation and examine its underpinnings in countries, using the cultural dimensions of individualism and power dis- tance. Although the initial hypotheses stated that cooperation would look different across these dimensions, the international set of 6452 respondents showed that the overwhelm- ing majority had a similar view of cooperation. The study adds to our understanding of cooperation in different societies and contexts, and suggests that there may be a universal view of cooperat...

Abstract:
Advances in communication technologies have made great progress in bridging time and distance, but social and cultural differences are still formidable obstacles to effective communication. Communication processes occur in specific cultural contexts, with unique normative beliefs, assumptions, and shared symbols. Culture influences what people communicate, to whom they communicate, and how they communicate. There has been little systematic cross-cultural research to explicate the effects of communication media on communication effectiveness. This article proposes cultural effects on perceptions of media effectiveness. The authors advance conceptual knowledge by presenting new perspectives on the cultural effects on individuals’ perception of media and their effectiveness.

Abstract:
Is the societal-level of analysis sufficient today to understand the values of those in the global workforce? Or are individual-level analyses more appropriate for assessing the influence of values on ethical behaviors across country workforces? Using multi-level analyses for a 48-society sample, we test the utility of both the societal- level and individual-level dimensions of collectivism and individualism values for predicting ethical behaviors of business professionals. Our values-based behavioral anal- ysis indicates that values at the individual-level make a more significant contribution to explaining variance in ethical behaviors than do values at the societal-level. Implicitly, our findings question the soundness of using societal-level values measures. Implications for international business research are discussed.
