Architectural Plans and Drawings
(1995)
Seymour, Valerie
Abstract:
In this essay I propose to discuss some of the architectural plans and drawings in the library collections and their relation to existing buildings. These drawings are the work of architects Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin (1812-52) and James Joseph McCarthy (1817-82) in the main, and illustrate the mid-nineteenth- century building programme at Maynooth. Pugin's influential writings on architecture, ornament and all matters Gothic, which are well represented in the collections, will also be discussed.

Finding Furlong: insights into the library of a nineteenth century theologian
(2015)
O'Dwyer, Mick
Abstract:
The Russell Library at Maynooth University is home to many unique treasures. In amongst cuneiform tablets from the Babylonian period, incunabula from 1470 onwards, and medieval manuscripts, resides a lesser known collection of significant importance – the Furlong Collection. Comprised of the personal library of the former Bishop of Ferns, Thomas Furlong (1802-75), this collection is a unique treasure of the Russell Library.

THE BIBLE IN MAYNOOTH
(1995)
Seymour, Valerie
Abstract:
The story of the Bible in Maynooth mirrors the separate yet parallel development of the translation, publishing and dissemination of the Scriptures by the two main Christian denominations in the post-Reformation period. Before the middle of the fifteenth century manuscript bibles were for the exclusive use of the clergy and nobility. The Latin Vulgate version reigned supreme, well under Church control. Some hundred editions of the Vulgate were printed by the end of the fifteenth century. Many vernacular versions emerged in Europe from the mid-1450s onward. There were over 75 versions of Scripture in German,French, Dutch, Italian and Spanish before 1540. In the same period some 50 English versions were printed.2 The emergence of these vernacular versions in European languages represents another strand in bible production. For a short period there were many versions of the Vulgate and increasing numbers in the vernacular being produced simultaneously. The bible collections in Maynooth...

THE LIBRARY: LOOKING BACK, 1995-1800
(1995)
Neligan, Agnes
Abstract:
Catholic seminary and religious libraries in Ireland, with a few notable exceptions, are almost invisible institutions and their collections are largely unknown. An occasional photograph or a mention in passing in their institutions' history is all the information readily available. The library at Maynooth, because of the status of the college as national seminary, pontifical university and recognised college of the National University of lreland, has fared better. The two government commissions1 which, inquired in some detail into the administration of the college in the nineteenth century give an interesting insight into the functioning of the library in the early years. Several passing travellers give brief glimpses of it and there is a whole chapter on the library in the centenary history of the college.

The Pamphlets Considered
(1995)
Woods, Penny
Abstract:
Take a sheet of paper, demy, pot or royal, with eight pages printed on each side; fold it once, twice and a third time; stabstitch along the back fold to hold it together-and you have a pamphlet, in its simplest form. A slightly longer text, and an extra half-sheet, or a second and third, folded to match, can be incorporated. The title-page must serve as cover for there is no binding. It is left to the title to bait the reader.

The religious mind of Maynooth's Gaelic manuscripts

The religious mind of Maynooth's Gaelic manuscripts
(1995)
Ó Dúshláine, Tadhg
Abstract:
By a happy coincidence the byline for Maynooth College's bicentenary celebrations, 'for faith and fatherland', is a precise description of that last great flowering of native spirituality during the Baroque Age (1600-1700). James Fitzmaurice Fitzgerald, leader of the 1579 rebellion, insisted that 'zeal for God's honour and their own country' was the rebels' prime motivation, just as Hugh O'Neill declared in 1615 that all his acts of defiance against the crown were 'in defence of the Catholic faith and of his fatherland'. From the defeat at Kinsale in 1601 to the Famine of1847-8, the old Gaelic order suffered political, military, social and economic disaster. Paradoxically, and perhaps consequentially, no other period produced such a volume of native poetry and prose, of such literary and intellectual merit. The native bardic tradition, isolated for the most part from the mainstream of the medieval Continental tradition by the conserv...

The SndObj Sound Object Library
(2000)
Lazzarini, Victor
Abstract:
The SndObj Sound Object Library is a C++ object-oriented audio processing framework and toolkit. This article initially examines some of the currently available sound processing packages, including sound compilers, programming libraries and toolkits. It reviews the processes involved in the use of these systems and their strengths and weaknesses. Some application examples are also provided. In this context, the SndObj library is presented and its components are discussed in detail. The article shows the library as composed of a set of classes that encapsulate all processes involved in synthesis, processing and IO operations. Programming examples are included to show some uses of the system. These, together with library binaries, source code and complete documentation, are included in the downloadable package, available on the Internet. Possible future developments and applications are considered. The library is demonstrated to provide a useful base for research and development of au...

The Varying Impact of Geographic Distance as a Predictor of Dissatisfaction Over Facility Access
(2012)
Comber, Alexis; Brunsdon, Chris; Philips, Martin
Abstract:
This research uses a Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) analysis to compare perceptions of public service accessibility as captured by an attitudes survey against measures of geographical distance to those services. The 2008 Place Survey in Leicestershire, UK, captured data on respondent dissatisfaction about their access to different services and facilities. In this analysis, survey responses about access to Post Offices and libraries were summarised over census Output Areas. Road distances to the nearest facility were calculated for each Output Area. GWR was used to model the spatial variations in the relationship between facility distance and access dissatisfaction and how these relationships vary within and between different socioeconomic groups (in this case OAC groups). The results show that for Post Offices, the effect of geographic distance as a predictor of access dissatisfaction is stronger than for libraries, that its effect varies spatially and that there is consid...
