(2006)
O'Connor, Marion; Mangan, John; Cullen, John G.
Abstract:
Purpose – Drawing upon survey and interview data, this research paper aims to explore the usage and impact of management development processes and practices in Ireland from an organisational perspective. Design/methodology/approach – The paper examines numerous related issues including: the issue of aligning management development needs to business strategy; the usage of management development methods; the development of high potential managers; and the assignment of responsibility for management development. Tbe paper is the result of a study which included a combination of 13 semi-structured interviews with HR/training managers and the completion of postal questionnaires by 53 respondents from the HR/training management population in Ireland from a cross section of organisations. Findings – The study suggests that organisations are both concerned for their management population, see their development as a key priority and are willing to invest in them. Mediating High Conflict Matters.
(2017)
Whatling, Tony
Abstract:
To what extent is practice and training adapting to meet the challenge of an increase in high conflict levels in dispute resolution – including developments in social media and electronic communications? This article explores recent changes in disputants’ conflict behaviour, together with potential implications for practitioner skills, strategies, values and training. It will provide some theoretical frameworks related to conflict behaviour and conflict ideologies that can be applied to practice. Recent developments in electronic and social mass media communications are explored, together with the impact these have had on conflict patterns in dispute resolution. It considers the extent to which developments in conflict behaviour may need to be challenged more overtly by mediators, for example through a more pro-active mentoring dialogue, including in individual pre-mediation meetings. Finally it offers some recommendations as to how such challenges and ideas for change, can be util...

Abstract:
Trust and mentoring are two well researched concepts within the field of management science. However, very few studies have sought to explicitly look at the role of trust in the mentoring relationship. This study seeks to contribute to the linking of the two fields. The mentoring experiences of 289 second year trainee lawyers who were interns in law practices in the Republic of Ireland were surveyed. Their levels of trust in their formally assigned mentor was assessed and their perceptions of the effectiveness of their mentoring experience using Scandura's (1992) three function conceptualisation were measured. The role of trust in the experience of the three functions is highlighted. The research also reveals how trust in mentor and the experienced career development aspect of mentoring, predict trainee intention to stay or leave their organisation. Implications for mentoring programme development and practice are suggested.

Young, gifted and underachieving: examining the role of mentoring in assisting underachieving highly-able students achieve their educational potential.

Laurenson, Pauline
Abstract:
The education of gifted and talented pupils is a topical issue and one of growing concern to many parents and teachers. This was of particular concern in the school in which I was a teacher. The school determined students as being of high ability when they scored in the top ten percent of the school population as indicated by standardised tests they completed prior to and upon admission. These tests were the Cognitive Abilities Test 3 and the Drumcondra Reasonsing Test. Teachers were also encouraged to identify students who they perceived to be highly able in their subject area. The aim of this study was to examine reasons why pupils of high ability might underachieve and to address these issues through the use of a mentoring project. The mentors used positive psychology and metacognition strategies in an effort to get the students to achieve their potential. Another aim of the study was to consider how a project of this nature might be managed in a large secondary school wit...
