Abstract:
This article integrates the business model concept with an understanding of industry recipes to show how competing business models can co-exist in a competitive market. Drawing on data from the English Premier League, we show that alternative models – based on the acquisition of talent on one dimension and the internal development of shared team experience on the other – lead to differing value creation and value capture outcomes. Drawing on the time series nature of our data, we also show that transitioning between business models can involve a decline in performance (which may be temporary), and draw some implications for managers faced with the challenge of changing their business models.

Abstract:
Open innovation is a paradigm that proposes that firms can and should use external as well as internal innovations/ideas. A popular example of open innovation has been open source software (OSS). The key issues facing organizational decision makers considering OSS strategies is, how does the firm create value for the customer while simultaneously extracting value for itself? However, the adoption of OSS as part of an open innovation strategy is a recent phenomenon and many unanswered questions remain. Taking the viewpoint of seven IS/IT decision makers in European firms, this paper reveals how decision makers considered aspects of value creation, capture, and networking in making decisions on adopting open source software. Abstract:
This chapter reviews the professional accountancy literature to gain an overview of extant definitions of sustainability and value, starting with the Brundtland report and the Triple bottom line (TBL) report on “people, planet and profit”. Sustainability or social accounting is traced up to the most recent Integrated Reporting (IR) initiative. The Accountability framework called Enterprise Governance devised by the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) is discussed. The two dimensions of conformance or governance and performance are explained and the value creation imperative is shown to rest within the performance dimension. The drive for openness in government, with open data as a key component, has seen governments around the world devote a large amount of resources to publishing government collected and held data. Scarce resources are being devoted to this goal with the primary goals designated as economic growth and increased innovation. A somewhat overlooked aim is the creation of public value which can be deployed as an openness and trust enhancing apparatus. This preliminary work addresses this gap by aiming to develop the core knowledge of how public value can be co-created with open data. Through an extensive survey of the relevant literature, this research seeks to build an initial framework of public value as applied to co-created open data. Abstract:
Our study explores the potential for developing a hybrid business model for public-private ecosystem that emerged around the smart cities project in Dublin Docklands Strategic Development Zone. We focus on stakeholders’ expectations in relation to value creation and value capture, trying to understand to what extent the interests of stakeholder groups are diverse, and whether it is possible to create consensus that delivers economic, social, and environmental value for participants. The findings of this study seek to advance the literature on the business models of hybrid organisations and to test some assumptions of the research on the governance of public-private partnerships.

Referring to simultaneous competition and cooperation between firms, coopetition is emerging in practice as a promising source of value creation. However, the scholarly literature is dominated by a widespread assumption that opportunism, a core behavioral assumption of transaction cost economics, hinders value creation and requires formal safeguards in coopetition. The assumption of heightened opportunism in coopetition is at odds with rising adoption in practice, which often proceeds without formal safeguards. This raises concerns about the utility of existing theory for explaining coopetition dynamics and their implications for value creation. Building from theories of competitive dynamics and the resource-based view, my research challenges the dominant assumption of heightened opportunism and develops an alternative explanation to better explain coopetition dynamics. Purpose – Open innovation is an emerging paradigm which exposes organisations to networked capabilities and competencies though collaboration relationships. The traditional view of the organisational environment raises concerns regarding the mismatch in the methods used to assess business value and understanding service process maturity. The purpose of this paper is to address this gap. Design/methodology/approach – This paper employs a systematic literature review to present a state-of-the-art literature review with particular focus on the applicability of capability maturity models (CMM) within an open innovation context. The role of universities is changing. In the last century, the primary focus areas of universities were education and research with key goals of creating and diffusing information and knowledge. Now, a third and equally important role, expectation and responsibility is emerging – that of value creation. Value in this context refers to both business value and societal value. With increasing scrutiny of funding into the third-level sector, governments and the public alike are expecting more accountability and proof of added value from universities. Open Source Software (OSS) is seen as an excellent exemplar of both peer production and open innovation. Nonetheless, the very concept of OSS represents phenomena that require firms to rethink their strategy as the shift in focus from ownership to one of openness requires a reconsideration of the processes that generate value creation and capture. Existing research suggests that engaging with external parties in networks or ecosystems represent growing sources of value creation and capture. The activities conducted in these networks are usually supported by traditional inter-organisational structures like hierarchies, markets and brokerages. Despite the rapid emergence of cloud technology, its prevalence and accessibility to all types of organizations and its potential to predominantly shift competitive landscapes by providing a new platform for creating and delivering business value, empirical research on the business value of cloud computing, and in particular how service providers create value for their customers, is quite limited. Of what little research exists to date, most focuses on technical issues. This paper aims to address this research gap by exploring how cloud technologies are used to create business value and identifying factors that may impact the realization of business value. Drawing on four case studies that considers the perspective of both service provider and customer, this study takes a more comprehensive perspective of the business model concept in examining business value than has been done to date in the cloud domain, thus contributing to the limited literature surrounding the area.
