‘….All the most approved modern arrangements': Building for mental health care at Monaghan, 1886-1950s
(2015)
NicGhabhann, Niamh
Abstract:
n/a
This essay considers the building of St. Davnet's Hospital in Monaghan town, which was opened in 1869 as the Cavan and Monaghan District Lunatic Asylum. Based on extensive primary research from the records on site, this essay explores the history of this building within the context of institutional architecture in Ireland, across the British Empire, and the fate of the asylums within the Irish Free State.

A Fire Risk Assessment Technique for Educational Establishments
(2003)
Hrymak, Victor; O'Reilly, Noel
Abstract:

It is now widely considered as good practice to include fire risk assessment techniques when developing a fire risk management system. However there is little guidance as to how to evaluate the influence of organisational culture and human behaviour on the resultant level of fire safety. Since most accidents are caused by the failure of management systems, quantified risk assessment must take into account local safety management practices, or else it will not provide reliable information”.

This study tries to address this issue by developing a new fire risk assessment technique for assessing the fire safety management system of a multi-site, third level educational organisation .

Information gathering

The new technique used the traditional risk assessment technique of knowledge based surveying, to assess the bu...

A Lightweight classification algorithm for external sources of interference in IEEE 802.15.4-based wireless sensor networks operating at the 2.4 GHz
(2014)
Zacharias, Sven; Newe, Thomas; O'Keeffe, Sinéad; Lewis, Elfed
Abstract:
IEEE 802.15.4 is the technology behind wireless sensor networks (WSNs) and ZigBee. Most of the IEEE 802.15.4 radios operate in the crowded 2.4 GHz frequency band, which is used by many technologies. Since IEEE 802.15.4 is a low power technology, the avoidance of interference is vital to conserve energy and to extend the lifetime of devices. A lightweight classification algorithm is presented to detect the common external sources of interference in the 2.4GHz frequency band, namely, IEEE 802.11-based wireless local area networks (WLANs), Bluetooth, and microwave ovens. This lightweight algorithm uses the energy detection (ED) feature (the feature behind received signal strength indication (RSSI)) of an IEEE 802.15.4-compliant radio. Therefore, it classifies the interferers without demodulation of their signals. As it relies on time patterns instead of spectral features, the algorithm has no need to change the channel. Thus, it allows the radio both to stay connected to the channel an...

A Methodology to Develop Judgment Skills in Sustainable Architectural Education
(2011)
Kenny, Paul; Brophy, Vivienne
Abstract:
Students of sustainability, in particular architectural students, are faced with a vast body of published work that forms an important part of their reference library. The idea of the precedent study is, traditionally, central to the education of an architectural student, introducing them to exemplary projects of all types. However many of the buildings published and purporting to be ‘sustainable’ or ‘green’ lack rigorous and impartial review. In the absence of such credible evidence how is a student, or for that matter, their instructor, to know that a particular building is an authentic exemplar upon which to base research or teaching. This paper presents a project and the methodology used by second year architectural students in University College Dublin designed to instil a strong sense of discernment in the student, developing critical and research skills that enable them to differentiate between an authentic sustainable exemplar and one over which there may be doubt. The proje...

Across Disciplinary and National Borders: a Pedagogical Tool for Re-use
(2016)
Pereira, Sandra Marques; Roche, Jim
Abstract:

This paper examines the process and results of a multinational, interdisciplinary pedagogical experiment aimed at exploring design options for the reconfiguration of dwellings in Portela: a modern middle-class, high-rise estate in north-east Lisbon.

The experimental workshop entitled “Contemporary Living Patterns in Mass Housing in Europe” occurred in the ISCTE - University Institute of Lisbon in the summer of 2014 under the aegis of OIKONET, a global multidisciplinary network on housing research and learning funded by the EU Lifelong Learning Programme.

Three framing steps preceded the design work of the students. Firstly, a lecture focused in three issues: i) the social and demographic changes that are affecting Portugal; ii) the characterization of the Lisbon Metropolitan Area (LMA), the context of Portela and its development after the 1950’s; ii) the evolution of housing in the LMA and its sociological ...

Abstract:

Agent design has to date concerned itself with the issues pertaining to a single body embedded in a single environment, whether virtual or real. This paper discusses the notion of an agent capable of migrating between information spaces (physical worlds, virtual reality, and digital information spaces). An architecture is presented that facilitates agent migration and mutation within such environments. This will in turn support agent

evolution the ultimate in agent adaptivity

An Introduction to Building Contracts: an Irish Context
(2016)
Cunningham, Tony
Abstract:

A contract is an agreement which is capable of being enforced at law and whose essential characteristic is that of a bargain. Contract law focuses predominantly on commercial transactions and in the construction context these range from simple every-day transactions such as purchasing a box of nails to procuring multi-million euro building facilities. In Ireland construction clients typically engage designers and quantity surveyors to formulate designs and they subsequently contract with building contractors to construct the designs. The contractors, in turn, typically outsource much of the work to subcontractors and order materials from numerous suppliers. All of these activities involve contractual relationships and each of the participants is linked to others within the supply chain by means of a contract.

The legal principles underpinning Irish building contracts derive for the most part from the general law of contract. Statute law may, however, regu...

An Introduction to Taking Off Building Quantities:an Irish Approach
(2014)
Cunningham, Tony
Abstract:

The purpose of measuring building work is to establish the correct amount of work to be executed. Calculating well presented accurate quantities in a clear manner while adopting a logical approach will help to reduce errors and will save time if the measurements need to be referred to at a later date. This paper describes and demonstrates an approach to hand-written taking off procedure informed by the techniques adopted by Irish consulting quantity surveying practices. The paper also discusses the ‘direct billing’ system used inIrelandand contrasts this with the procedures demonstrated in various UK textbooks, identifying key differences between the two approaches.

The study is addressed to Irish students commencing building measurement studies on undergraduate and conversion masters courses in quantity surveying and construction management related disciplines.

Appointing Main Contractors for Construction Work in the Republic of Ireland. – An Overview.
(2015)
Cunningham, Tony
Abstract:

This study examines the various options available for a client to appoint a contractor. The study investigates open tendering, selective tendering, prequalification, two stage selective tendering, competitive dialogue, negotiation and serial tendering. In most building contracts the contractor is selected on the basis of competitive tendering. The price which the contractor quotes for the job is heavily influenced by both the amount and intensity of the competition. Even in the case of negotiated tenders there is implicit competition, as the employer can break off negotiations. If there is no competition the contractor can, in effect, ‘name his price’. This study examines the factors which influence one of the most cost significant decisions a client will make in the course of a building contract. It explains the characteristics, advantages and disadvantages of the various tender options and seeks to inform decision making concerning selecting a suitable tender arrangement ...

Architectural Registration and it's Diversity Vortex.
(2004)
Chance, Shannon
Abstract:

Architects: take a serious look at your demographics. While other professions are making strides to represent the diversity of America's population, yours lags markedly behind. Most U.S. architecture schools began admitting women and minorities between 1965 and 1972, but many who completed architecture degrees in the interim haven't yet received professional licensure. The ranks of licensed architects remain mainly white and mainly male, which denies society fair representation in shaping the built environment. Consider that African-American females comprise roughly 7% of the U.S. population but less than 0.2% of licensed architects; they've achieved proportionally higher success in law, medicine, and engineering. The architecture profession has done little to attract, foster, or retain diverse talent - a problem that both mirrors and exacerbates the profession's detachment from general society. To mend gaping disparities, the profession must take seriou...

ARM4 - A Working Guide - Section B - Preliminaries
(2015)
Cunningham, Tony
Abstract:

This paper is a companion to Section B – Preliminaries of the Agreed Rules of Measurement 4th Edition (2009) and is provided as a guide to help better understanding of ARM and to clarify its contents. It is hoped that it may remove some of the disagreements which can arise on construction projects due to differences of interpretation. The paper follows ARM sequence, stating the rules first and following these with notes and commentary on the individual rules.

Because contractual terms and arrangements are a central concern of the preliminaries bill, this paper has been written with a particular focus on the principal Irish standard forms of contract which may call for a bill of quantities to be prepared in accordance with ARM. These are the Royal Institute of Architects in Ireland (RIAI) ‘yellow’ form of contract and the Public Works Contracts PW-CF1 and PW-CF5. The employer provides the design as part of all three of these contract...

Assessment Formats: Student Preferences and Perceptions
(2010)
Seymour, Michael; Chance, Shannon
Abstract:

This paper provides a student perspective on the variety of forms of design critique available to educators. In architecture and landscape architecture, the design jury remains the dominant format for providing feedback to students. In recent years this format has come under scrutiny and its effectiveness called into question. However, little research has been done into the variety of alternative or supplemental formats available to educators. This paper explores an array of techniques that the authors have employed in design studio courses (which include techniques suggested by students in Webster’s 2007 article in the Journal of Architectural Education). These include written and verbal forms of feedback, peer and self evaluations, feedback provided during the design process and variations in the jury format. The benefits and limitations of each of the techniques are explored through presentation of the results of two web-based surveys of students. The student surveys wer...

BackToBack: a Bio-cybernetic Approach to Production of Solid Timber Components
(2014)
Wójcik, Marcin; Strumiłło, Jan
Abstract:

This paper investigates the potential and implications of using naturally occurring material phenomena as a connecting mechanism for solid timber components. Proposed and discussed are connections based on anisotropic shrinkage and geometrical variability of trees. Using the notion of material agency in design, following the bio-cyberntic and biomimetic frameworks, solutions are devised to reduce energy usage, environmental pollution and utilise low-processed material. Finally, consequences of the fusion of the natural (analogue) and the digital realms are discussed, with an example of a workflow integrating inherent material traits with digital manufacture.
