Abstract:
In this paper we propose novel, audio-visual analysis techniques for event detection in broadcast TV sports video content. The scope of the design is constrained to the specialized domain of 'field sport', and specifically, Gaelic Football is presented as an experimental case study. We show that a combination of speech-band energy tracking in the audio domain, coupled with colour dominance pattern recognition in the video domain, provides a useful contribution to event detection for broadcast Gaelic Football matches. It is projected that, any conclusions made therein may be extended such that they function on sports content of a similar nature such as American Football, Australian Rules, Rugby Union etc.

Audio Data Verification and Authentication using Frequency Modulation Based Watermarking
(2008)
Blackledge, Jonathan; Farooq, Omar
Abstract:
An approach to watermarking digital signals using frequency modulation - ‘Chirp Coding’ - is considered. The principles underlying this approach are based on the use of a matched filter to reconstruct a ‘chirp stream’ code that is uniquely robust. The method is generic in the sense that it can, in principle, be used for a variety of different signal (the authentication of speech and biomedical signals, for example). Further, by generating a bit stream that is signal dependent, chirp coding provides a method of self-authentication, which has a wide range of applications including copyright protection and digital rights management. However, in this paper, we focus on the application of chirp coding for the verification, authentication and self-authentication of audio signals. We also consider the effect of using a multi-level chirp coding approach to increase the ‘volume’ of data that can be embedded into a host signal. The theoretical and computational aspects of the matched filter w...

Convolutive non-negative matrix factorisation with a sparseness constraint
(2006)

Abstract:
Discovering a representation which allows auditory data to be parsimoniously represented is useful for many machine learning and signal processing tasks. Such a representation can be constructed by non-negative matrix factorisation (NMF), a method for finding parts-based representations of non-negative data. We present an extension to NMF that is convolutive and includes a sparseness constraint. In combination with a spectral magnitude transform, this method discovers auditory objects and their associated sparse activation patterns.

Rhythm detection for speech-music discrimination in MPEG compressed domain
(2002)
Jarina, Roman; O'Connor, Noel E.; Marlow, Seán; Murphy, Noel
Abstract:
A novel approach to speech-music discrimination based on rhythm (or beat) detection is introduced. Rhythmic pulses are detected by applying a long-term autocorrelation method on band-passed signals. This approach is combined with another, in which the features describe the energy peaks of the signal. The discriminator uses just three features that are computed from data directly taken from an MPEG-1 bitstream. The discriminator was tested on more than 3 hours of audio data. Average recognition rate is 97.7%.

Time domain attack and release modeling - applied to spectral domain sound synthesis

Abstract:
We introduce a time-domain model for the synthesis of attack and release parts of musical sounds. This approach is an extension of a spectral synthesis model we developed: the Parametric Synthesis Model (PSM). The attack and release model is independent from a preceeding spectral analysis as it is based on the time domain sustain part of the sound. We apply a shaping function to this sustain part to obtain the sound attack and the release. The model has been tested with linear and polynomial shaping functions and produces good results for three different instruments. The time-domain approach also overcomes the problem of synthesis artifacts that often occur when using spectral analysis/synthesis methods for sounds with transient events. Moreover, the model can be combined with any synthesis model of the sustain part and offers the possibility to determine the duration of the attack and release parts of the sound.
