(Le)agility in Humanitarian Aid Supply Chains
(2010)
Scholten, Kirstin; Sharkey Scott, Pamela; Fynes, Brian
Abstract:
Purpose - This paper explores the concept of agility in the context of supply chains of humanitarian aid (HA) organizations, particularly Non Government Organizations (NGOs). This responds to the increasing pressure on NGOs to use their resources more strategically if they are to gain donor trust and long term commitment. Design/ Methodology/Approach - A literature based approach that extends the commercial supply chain concept of agility to NGOs is combined with the first exploratory semi structured interviews of these concepts with five NGO supply chain directors. Findings – The commercial concept of agility when responding to disaster relief holds strong potential for increasing efficiency and effectiveness, but this application is restrained by the absence of supporting Information Technology (IT) and the relegation of supply chain management (SCM) to the ‘back office’ by NGOs. This has potential implications for NGOs and other humanitarian aid agencies. Research Limitations - T...

A Career in Tour Guiding: A Case Study of Dublin, Ireland
(2017)
Melia, Detta
Abstract:
Tourist guides are the essential interface between a tourism destination and its visitors, and are very much responsible for the overall impression of the destination and satisfaction offered. However, of the small amount of literature published, very few studies have asked tourist guides their views and opinions, or have built up a profile of the tourist guide. This paper attempts to redress the balance. This study, concentrating on professional tourist guides in Dublin, Ireland. Potential threats and challenges to the future of the industry are explored, particularly threats from unqualified guides and from the introduction of information technology (IT). Primary research was carried out with the Tourist Guides of Dublin, Ireland as this destination contains the largest number of tourist guides on the island of Ireland. The employers of tourist guides were asked their opinions on issues related to tourist guiding in a series of in-depth interviews. Many of the conditions of the r...

A Comparative Framework: How Broadly Applicable is a “Rigorous” Critical Junctures Framework?
(2009)
Hogan, John; Doyle, David
Abstract:
The paper tests Hogan and Doyle’s (2007; 2008) framework for examining critical junctures. This framework sought to incorporate the concept of ideational change in understanding critical junctures. Until its development, frameworks utilised in identifying critical junctures were subjective, seeking only to identify crisis, and subsequent policy changes, arguing that one invariably led to the other, as both occurred around the same time. Hogan and Doyle (2007; 2008) hypothesised ideational change as an intermediating variable in their framework, determining if, and when, a crisis leads to radical policy change. Here we test this framework on cases similar to, but different from, those employed in developing the exemplar. This will enable us determine whether the framework’s relegation of ideational change to a condition of crisis holds, or, if ideational change has more importance than is ascribed to it by this framework. This will also enable us determined if the framework itself is...

A Quantitative Study Into Grade Inflation (Perceived and Actual) in the College of Business, Dublin Institute of Technology
(2011)
Simon, Derek
Abstract:
Most academics have an opinion on the existence or otherwise of grade inflation. Some people deny the existence of grade inflation. Some argue that it is damaging to academia while some argue that it is a normal phenomenon and is not damaging while others assert that it is impossible to measure. Due to the difficulty in measurement of grade inflation this study was devised to measure firsts and distinctions to ascertain the quantity of grade inflation. This study takes a two pronged approach to discovering the real and perceived existence or otherwise of grade inflation in the College. In the first instance a comparative study of the grades achieved by final year students in the year 2000 and in the year 2010 was undertaken, the data used to ascertain this information was collected from the College computer database which serves two of the schools in the College. The information demonstrates that the number of firsts awarded to students grew by one hundred percent. In the second ins...

A Review of Virtualisation and Cloud Computing in Higher Education
(2014)
O'Donnell, Eileen
Abstract:
Virtualisation in the classroom provides students with the impression that they are interacting with applications, services, and files which are stored locally, when in fact the applications, services, and files may be stored on a server off site, or at an alternative location on site. “Virtualization is a technology that permits the abstraction of the software from one computer and its easy deployment in another one, which may house additional virtualized machines” (Martín, Marrero, Urbano, Barra, & Moreiro, 2011, p. 349). Server virtualisation is when an Information Technology manager or computer administrator partitions a server to create several instances of virtual servers, thereby multiplying the working capacity of the physical server.

A Simulation-based Decision Support System to Improve Healthcare Facilities Performance – Elaborated on an Irish Emergency Department
(2011)
Thorwarth, Michael
Abstract:
Emergency departments (EDs) are a crucial access point to the healthcare system in Ireland. High patient demand and limited resources have resulted in long waiting times and long lengths of stay in EDs. Some of this pressure on EDs could be ameliorated by more streamlined hospital processes particularly in managing discharges and managing the volume of work. This research sought to develop a simulation-based Decision Support System (DSS) to enable an accelerated development of a simulation based solution to improve quality and care at Irish hospitals. In order to investigate causes of bottlenecks and insufficient distribution of resources, a novel process modelling approach is developed, where patient pathways are investigated in relation to the work flow of medical staff with the consideration of the dependence on limited resources. This approach is included in the simulation based DSS which aids to consult managers of EDs by providing a comprehensive perspective onto the crucial f...

Abstract:
Security has become the primary concern in many telecommunications industries today as risks can have high consequences. Especially, as the core and enable technologies will be associated with 5G network, the confidential information will move at all layers in future wireless systems. Several incidents revealed that the hazard encountered by an infected wireless network, not only affects the security and privacy concerns, but also impedes the complex dynamics of the communications ecosystem. Consequently, the complexity and strength of security attacks have increased in the recent past making the detection or prevention of sabotage a global challenge. From the security and privacy perspectives, this paper presents a comprehensive detail on the core and enabling technologies, which are used to build the 5G security model; network softwarization security, PHY (Physical) layer security and 5G privacy concerns, among others. Additionally, the paper includes discussion on security monito...

A trust label system for communicating trust in cloud services

Emeakaroha, Vincent C.; Fatema, Kaniz; van der Werff, Lisa; Healy, Philip; Lynn, Theo; Morrison, John P.
Abstract:
Cloud computing is rapidly changing the digital service landscape. A proliferation of Cloud providers has emerged, increasing the difficulty of consumer decisions. Trust issues have been identified as a factor holding back Cloud adoption. The risks and challenges inherent in the adoption of Cloud services are well recognised in the computing literature. In conjunction with these risks, the relative novelty of the online environment as a context for the provision of business services can increase consumer perceptions of uncertainty. This uncertainty is worsened in a Cloud context due to the lack of transparency, from the consumer perspective, into the service types, operational conditions and the quality of service offered by the diverse providers. Previous approaches failed to provide an appropriate medium for communicating trust and trustworthiness in Clouds. A new strategy is required to improve consumer confidence and trust in Cloud providers. This paper presents the operationali...

Accessing International Markets: how Professional Service Firms Internationalise
(2013)
McQuillan, Deirdre; Sharkey Scott, Pamela; Mangematin, Vincent
Abstract:
Professional service firms (“PSFs”) increasingly rely on internationalisation to drive their growth strategy. Their professional reputation and networks of relationships are critical due to the high knowledge complexity of their services. Yet international business process theory, while identifying learning as the critical tool for addressing foreign market risk, provides little insight into how PSFs build relationships and reputation for internationalisation. Our qualitative multiple case research study of the PSF internationalisation process identifies phases of interplay between learning, relationship and reputation building. These findings extend international business process theory by revealing the role of reputation and relationship building during the internationalisation process and contribute to our understanding of how PSFs build international networks and develop their reputations.

Actor-Network Theory and Organizational Forming: An Amodern Path Dependence Perspective
(2008)
Donnelly, Paul
Abstract:
The organizational theory literature has identified the emergence and evolution of organizational forms as a critical issue to be addressed, yet new ways of looking at organizational form have yet to be addressed and there are concerns about the largely ahistorical and aprocessual character of much organizational theorizing. While path dependence, as conventionally conceived, presents an avenue for overcoming the lack of historical contingency in mainstream organizational theories, it does not maintain an opening for forming. Here is where actor-network theory comes in to not only argue that organizational forming is ongoing, but also show how it is made unrecognizable by our modes of theorizing. Of particular interest to this framing is the re-articulation of path dependence as a constructivist endeavor, incorporating the concept into actor-network theory through its reconsideration as ‘irreversibilility’.

Aligning software configuration with business and IT context
(2012)
Dalpiaz, Fabiano; Ali, Raian; Giorgini, Paolo
Abstract:
An important activity to maximize Business/IT alignment is selecting a software con guration that ts a given context. Feature models represent the space of software con gurations in terms of distin- guished characteristics (features). However, they fall short in represent- ing the e ect of context on the adoptability and operability of features and, thus, of con gurations. Capturing this e ect helps to minimize the dependency on analysts and domain experts when deriving a software for a given business and IT environment. In this paper, we propose contex- tual feature models as a means to explicitly represent and reason about the interplay between the variability of both features and context. We devise a formal framework and automated analyses which enable to sys- tematically derive products aligned with an organizational context. We also propose FM-Context, a support tool for modeling and analysis.

An Action Plan for Implementing Responsible Management Education in Business Schools in the UK and Ireland
(2015)
O'Connell, Maeve; Sweeney, Lorraine, Dr
Abstract:
Recent corporate scandals have resulted in criticism of business schools for graduating students who put too much emphasis on shareholder value and profit maximisation but neglect the broader social and environmental context in which businesses operate. The Principles for Responsible Management (PRME) are a set of voluntary standards developed in 2007 under the coordination of the UN Global Compact, to address weaknesses in ethical education. This paper reviews the context of the PRME principles and UK and Irish school signatories’ approaches to implementation through a review of their reports to PRME to outline the range of options available to a business school considering implementing the principles across all aspects of the education portfolio. The paper concludes with an implementation strategy for a business school considering PRME membership.

Abstract:
Recent corporate scandals have resulted in criticism of business schools for graduating students who put too much emphasis on shareholder value and profit maximisation but neglect the broader social and environmental context in which businesses operate. This research fellowship set out to review current literature of ethics education in third level universities and institutions to determine best practice in the area. It also set out to review the reports of the signatories of PRME (Principals for Responsible Management Education) to develop an understanding of the range of options available to the College of Business to embed principles for responsible management across all aspects of the College’s education portfolio. This paper analyses a comprehensive literature review of the teaching of ethics in higher education. It reviews the importance of teaching ethics in higher education and reviews what should be taught and how best to teach this. Traditional teaching methods have been c...
