The 1st S. Pellegrino Sommelier Scholarship LIVE final took place on Wednesday 28th February 2012 at the DIT Green Room Training Restaurant, Cathal Brugha Street, Dublin. This initiative between the DIT School of Culinary Arts & Food Technology and Stafford Lynch Ltd offered hospitality students the unique opportunity to improve their sommelier skills in harmonizing water, wine and food to create a fine dining experience for their guests. Water continues to be one consumed the most, it’s the beverage that best accompanies every dish and perfectly harmonizes with all cultures. S. Pellegrino and Acqua Panna have developed a unique Water Codex to provide a clear outline of how to appreciate, serve and perfectly harmonize water with fine drinks, wine and food with the aim of completing the consumer’s pleasure on the table for a fine dining experience. Irish Pubs Global is spearheaded by Irish entrepreneur Enda O’Coineen it is the global network linking the owners and managers of more than 6,500 Irish Pubs. The 2015 conference theme was ‘Together is better’a truly unique event which was held over three days at the Dublin Convention Centre , open to all working in (and supplying to) the Irish hospitality sector both locally and internationally. The 2nd DIT Monin Cocktail Challenge took place on Thursday November 20th 2014, this initiative between the DIT Bar Management Studies and Monin attracted 70 mixologists. Prizes were awarded for the top non-alcohol cocktails presented and best technical performance. All cocktails were based on Monin premium syrups and purees, points were awarded for the appearance, aroma, taste and the commercial appeal of the cocktails. Irish Pubs Global is spearheaded by Irish entrepreneur Enda O’Coineen it is the global network linking the owners and managers of Irish Pubs. It contains 20 chapters worldwide and a database of more than 4,000 Irish Pubs. The Gathering event which started on September 29th was also supported by the Licensed Vintners Association and the Vintners Federation of Ireland. The three day programme focused on the ‘Next Generation of Irish Pubs’. A special feature of the Irish Pubs Global Gathering Event was the Beam Cocktail Challenge which took place on Monday 30th September 2013, this initiative between the DIT Bar Management Studies, Irish Pubs Global and Beam brought together DIT students in a unique cocktail challenge for all the delegates from over 22 countries. The objectives of this study centre on researching the complexities inherent within the development of Irish owned consumer brands. This is with particular emphasis on the international development of Irish brands and the ways by which International success can be realized. There has been a notable lack of Irish successes in International markets since that achieved by brands such as Guiness, Bailey’s, and Kerrygold. Through examinination of the literature on branding and contextualization of the study considering the Irish business environment, the research aims to explore ways in which indigenous Irish brands can grow and achieve international success. Abstract:
Empirical evidence strongly suggests that R&D increases a firm’s "absorptive capacity" (its ability to absorb spillovers from other firms) as well as contributing directly to profitability. We explore the theoretical implications of this. We specify a general model of the absorptive capacity process and show that costly absorption both raises the effectiveness of own R&D and lowers the effective spillover coefficient. This weakens the case for encouraging research joint ventures, even if there is complete information sharing between its members. It also implies an additional strategic pay-off to policies that raise the level of extra-industry knowledge.

Abstract:
This paper analyses the Public Transport Regulation Act 2009, published on September 8, 2009. The Act provides for the regulation of public bus passenger services, changes the name of the Dublin Transport Authority to the National Transport Authority and abolishes the Commission for Taxi Regulation. The economic importance of the Act is that it retains the restrictions on new market entry to the bus sector and continues to subsidise the sector by direct award subsidies. The policy options foregone by the Act are the alternatives of competition in the market by independent bus operators and competition through competitive tendering to provide bus services where subsidies are deemed necessary.

Abstract:
This paper analyses strategic market allocation by two auctioneers holding substitutes. It characterizes both the cooperative and competitive outcomes. Under cooperation or competition with close substitutes, bidders are allocated according to the expected total surplus each generates. This market division is efficient if and only if the distribution of bidders' tastes is not skewed. If skewed, reserve prices distort participation towards the least preferred item. For greater degrees of product differentiation competition leads to multiple equilibria. Finally, competition with close substitutes sellers leave participation rents to their weakest bidder. They do not in other cases, whether they compete or cooperate.

As biodiversity loss reaches critical levels, greater knowledge of its distribution is needed to concentrate conservation efforts. Biodiversity can be measured at several levels, with the species typically the unit used in conservation planning. Attempts to set accurate conservation priorities face a number of prominent challenges; 1. species distributions are often poorly known, particularly in the tropics where the rate of biodiversity loss is highest, 2. the number of currently described species is known to be a huge underestimate, with many cryptic species awaiting formal description, and 3. much remains unknown about the drivers of speciation, particularly what adaptations are associated with population divergence in the early stages of the process. Abstract:
Banks are seen as having informational advantages in the market for risky securities. The competitive implications of these advantages are explored in a model of asset prices. The impact of capital adequacy requirements on shareholders and borrowers is explored. The paper concludes with a brief extension to the analysis of required liquidity ratios and of competition between banks which are subject to different regulatory regimes.

Abstract:
This paper considers the extent to which Michel Foucault's conception of power gives a useful explanation of power relations between firms. It examines the perceived shift in the nature of interfirm relations from the traditional model in which firms operate as autonomous units within a competitive industry, to the co-operative competition model whereby firms engage in co-operation at certain levels of their operations and compete at other levels. It argues that the concepts of power and competition are closely intertwined and that an understanding of how power operates can give a greater understanding of the nature of competition within an industry. However the issue of power relations in the presence of co-operative competition has not been adequately explored by the literature. An analysis of the type of power reflected in interfirm relations is held as being the key to understanding the simultaneous existence of co-operation and competition between firms.

Abstract:
Animal contests govern access to key resources and are a fundamental determinant of fitness within populations. Little is known about the mechanisms generating individual variation in strategic contest behavior or what this variation means for population level processes. Cognition governs the expression of behaviors during contests, most notably by linking experience gained with decision making, but its role in driving the evolutionary ecological dynamics of contests is only beginning to emerge. We review the kinds of cognitive mechanisms that underlie contest behavior, emphasize the importance of feedback loops and socio-ecological context, and suggest that contest behavior provides an ideal focus for integrative studies of phenotypic variation.

The aim of this project was to explore the relationship between the entomopathogenic nematode Heterorhabditis downesi and its two symbionts, Photorhabdus temperata subsp. temperata and P. temperata subsp. cinerea, and the relationship (co-existence and competition) between the two symbionts, which co occur on Bull Island in Dublin Bay. There was no effect of Photorhabdus subspecies on the reproduction capacity of H. downesi in insects. Also there was no difference due to bacterial subspecies in the number of bacteria carried by H. downesi infective juveniles (IJs). The IJs carried around 200-300 bacteria on average. Infected insect cadavers were dried for up to 61 days and then rewetted. More IJs emerged from cadavers with P. t. cinerea than from cadavers with P. t. temperata. Clearly, P. t. cinerea provides an advantage to its associated nematodes under dry conditions, such as may occur at the front of a dune system, where this subspecies predominates. In biological control programmes introduced natural enemies compete with indigenous enemies for hosts and may also engage in intraguild predation when two species competing for the same prey attack and consume one another. The large pine weevil, Hylobius abietis L. (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), is an important pest of coniferous reforestation in Europe. Among its natural enemies, the parasitoid Bracon hylobii Ratz. Abstract:
I explore the interactions between comparative, competitive and absolute advantage in a two-country model of oligopoly in general equilibrium. Comparative advantage always determines the direction of trade, but both competitive and absolute advantage affect resource allocation, trade patterns and trade volumes. Competitive advantage in the sense of more home firms drives foreign firms out of marginal sectors but also makes some marginal home sectors uncompetitive. Absolute advantage in the sense of a uniform fall in home costs tends to raise home output in all sectors but also leads both countries to specialise less in accordance with comparative advantage.
