Abstract:
This paper details the control of a pilot scale laboratory heating and ventilation system. The system is represented in 2x2 multiinput, multioutput (MIMO) form. A process reaction curve identification technique was used to model (in first order lag plus delay  FOLPD  form) the flow process and temperature process portions of the system, over a range of operating conditions. Tests revealed that both processes were continuously nonlinear. A gain scheduler with static decoupling was designed, using lookup tables, to continuously interpolate for the most suitable proportionalintegral (PI) or proportionalintegralderivative (PID) controller settings and decoupler gains. The contribution of this paper is the careful application, using wellknown techniques, of a complete controller design cycle for a laboratory scale system.

Abstract:
An extensive literature exists on the compensation of time delayed processes. It is possible to identify themes that are common to many of the available techniques. The intention of the two parts of this paper is to provide a framework against which the literature may be viewed; Part 1 of the paper considers the use of parameter optimised controllers for the compensation problem, with Part 2 of the paper considering the use of structurally optimised compensators. Conclusions are drawn at the end of Part 2.

Abstract:
Traditionally, both explicit and implicit selftuning controllers have employed time domain techniques for the identification and tracking of plant and controller parameters. The use of the frequency domain provides concise information on the dynamics of the process which has led to its wide acceptance as a domain for controller design. This paper demonstrates a method employing recursive, online measurement of the process frequency response, with a straightforward calculation of PID controller parameters. The computational effort involved is comparable with that of a time domain technique.

Abstract:
The basic PID controllers have difficulty in dealing with problems that appear in complex nonlinear processes. This paper presents a practical nonlinear PID controller that deals with these nonlinear difficulties. It utilises a local model (LM) network, which combines a set of local models within an artificial neural network structure, to adaptively characterise the process nonlinearity. Then a local controller network is formulated through a gating system deduced from the LMN to handle the nonlinearity. A continuous stirred tank reaction (CSTR) case study illustrates the practicality of this method in the modelling and control of nonlinear processes. PID controllers are still alive and appropriate for the control of nonlinear processes.

Abstract:
An extensive literature exists on the compensation of time delayed processes. These compensation methods may be broadly divided into parameter optimised controllers, in which the controller parameters are adapted to the controller structure (the most common such controller is the proportional integral derivative, or PID, controller), and structurally optimised controllers, in which the controller structure and parameters are adapted optimally to the structure and parameters of the process model. Important structurally optimised compensator strategies are the Smith predictor and its variations. The purpose of this paper is to extract the essence of the developments in design, tuning and implementation of these controllers. In addition, an original variation on the Smith predictor structure is detailed.

Abstract:
This paper reflects on, reports on and evaluates the use of multiplechoice questions, in both formative and summative assessment modes, on control engineering modules taken by advanced undergraduate and postgraduate engineering students, over four academic years. The material covered by the modules is analytical in nature. The rationale for examining the assessment strategy was the poor performance by students in a closed book traditional terminal examination on one of the advanced undergraduate modules over some years. The change in assessment strategy has improved student learning, as measured by assessment data; student feedback on the assessment methods is broadly positive. The assessment approach has been extended with success to some postgraduate modules. Overall, an evidence based approach is taken in the reporting and analysis.

Abstract:
This paper discusses an approach to the teaching of PID controller tuning methods to students in control engineering at Dublin Institute of Technology. The method involves analytically calculating the gain margin, phase margin and maximum sensitivity for PI and PID controlled systems whose process is modelled in first order lag plus time delay (FOLPD) form. Students can examine the performance of many tuning rules from graphical results, allowing insight to be developed as to the most rational choice of the tuning rule for the application. Some preliminary work done to develop an expert system to allow a greater automation of the procedure for recommending a tuning rule, for user defined requirements, is also described.

During voiced speech, the larynx acts as the sound source, providing a quasiperiodic excitation of the vocal tract. Following a total laryngectomy, some people speak using an electrolarynx which employs an electromechanical actuator to perform the excitatory function of the absent larynx. Drawbacks of conventional electrolarynx designs include the monotonic sound emitted, the need for a freehand to operate the device, and the difficulty experienced by many laryngectomees in adapting to its use. One improvement to the electrolarynx, which clinicians and users frequently suggest, is the provision of a convenient handsfree control facility. This would allow more natural use of body language, as well as enabling the user to perform other manual tasks whilst speaking. The proportional gain and the integral time, in the PI controller, are chosen such that the closedloop step response exhibits an underdamped response. From this response data, five characteristic points are used to determine a second order plus deadtime model and subsequently, the frequency response of the closedloop system. Knowing the dynamics of the closedloop system and the dynamics of the controller, the openloop dynamics of the process can be determined by separating the dynamics of the controller from the closedloop dynamics.

This paper discusses the estimation of process parameters and time delay, in a Smith predictor structure, using gradient algorithms in the time domain. A number of estimation algorithms are outlined and applied in simulation to the estimation of the parameters of an appropriate process model. An analytical exploration of the technique is also provided.

Abstract:
The paper presents a review of a comparative study of two separate techniques for obtaining important frequency and time domain characteristics of a system consisting of a process in series with a PI/PID controller in closed loop. The first technique involves the use of a Pseudo Random Binary Sequence (PRBS) to obtain the closed loop frequency response of the system. This closed loop frequency information may then be manipulated to obtain both open loop frequency response information and process model parameters. A further mathematical simulation using Matlab may then be performed independent of the actual process in order to obtain important time domain characteristics of the system such as rise time, settling time and overshoot. Abstract:
Transfer functions which are a composite of delay terms cause problems for computer packages, such as MATLAB, in calculating the frequency response open loop transfer function, as the form of the open loop transfer function is irrational. So, the delay terms have to be approximated. There are several ways to evaluate a delay term. A calculator such as MATHEMATICA uses the exact representation of the delay called the Euler form. A computer package such as MATLAB uses a rational approximation for the delay. Using the MATLAB builtin function pade(n,tau), the open loop transfer function of a system with delay can be calculated and the Bode plot may be obtained using another MATLAB builtin function bode(transfer function). Unfortunately, it was noticed that the phase was shifted by an angle from the correct phase, due to the trigonometric properties of the arctan function. Consequently, methods to construct the correct Bode plot were studied and developed.
