Residential exposure to port noise: a case study of Dublin, Ireland
(2012)
Murphy, Enda; King, Eoin A.
Abstract:
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has recently acknowledged that contrary to the trend for other environmental stressors, noise exposure is increasing in Europe. While a considerable amount of research has recently been undertaken assessing the extent of noise from road, rail and air transportation in the EU, relatively little research has been conducted internationally assessing the extent of environmental noise within the vicinity of major European shipping ports. Accordingly, this paper reports on research examining the extent of noise exposure for residents within the vicinity of Dublin Port, Ireland using the nation’s largest port terminal as a proxy for port noise. Three gantries were erected without planning permission in 2002 but no enforcement proceedings were brought against the operating company prior to a seven-year enforcement period under planning laws expiring. Space and the Geographical Imagination on the Dublin Docklands’
(2012)
Sweeney, Moira
Abstract:

In my practice–based doctoral study Dublin Dockers, Visualising a Changing Community, I am foregrounding the application of ethnographic documentary methods and investigation in examining the world of a docker and stevedore community on Dublin's docks. Through excavating and recuperating narratives which are absent from mainstream media hegemony, the study is unraveling the transformations experienced by a stevedoring constituency as a consequence of globalisation, urban regeneration and the current recession. This paper engages with arguments for the revitalisation of our imaginations on space in the context of an audio visual and textual study of the urban and maritime Dublin dockland space.

The port of Dublin
(1955)
Hegarty, Denis A.
Abstract:
My purpose this evening is to tell you something about the Port of Dublin. I shall endeavour to do this in three stages, first I shall touch briefly on its history, then I shall describe the services which are required of a large modern port, and I shall explain to you how the port is organised, controlled, operated and financed, and describe the recent improvement schemes. In the second stage, I hope with the aid of some pictures to take you on a short visit to the port so that you may see it for yourselves and, finally, in the third stage, I shall put before you some statistics relating to the shipping, trade and financing of the port.
