An áit ina bhfuil t-anam is ann a thógas do chosa tú (your feet will always take you to the place of your soul): A study of transformation through indigenous ways of knowing in a County Kerry Community
(2013)
Kennelly, Anne
Abstract:
People have known from earliest times that the arts have the potential to heal and transform whatever needs attention in inner life. This study illustrates how a group of County Kerry adult learners with visual impairment communicated an understanding of their lives to their communities through various arts media. Exploring their worlds creatively through six stage performances and preparatory workshops, over a seven year period, brought them into deeper relationship with the self, other, community, the earth, their ancestors – their customs, traditions and their ways of being and knowing. Finding voice to tell the stories of the challenge between their internal and external worlds, the surface and the deep, was a transformative experience for them, changing their approach to learning and living. As they transformed their experiences of life on the theatre stage, life was transformed also for their everyday communities and those journeying with them as they co-constructed knowledge ...

An analysis of final year student project performance in mechanical engineering
(2008)
Karazi, Shadi; Brabazon, Dermot; Smyth, Philip; Molloy, David
Abstract:
This paper describes a statistical analysis of the students' results in mechanical engineering Final Year Project (FYP) at undergraduate level eight. Project marks of the final year students obtained over the past six years (2002-2008) were recorded and analysed. A detailed and comprehensive assessment of the marks achieved was examined. This included assessment of the presentation, report and progress results. This study provided an interesting insight into the trends of assessors' marking and students' performance. A gradual statistically significant reduction in student marks over these six years was noted. Reduced student performance over the last 10 years in Leaving Certificate mathematics along with the general fall of in the numbers of engineering students are discussed as possible contributing factors. Care must also be taken to ensure that marking is consistent and standard such that it fully and fairly expresses student performance.

An analysis of mathematical tasks used at second-level in Ireland
(2017)
O'Sullivan, Brendan
Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with the analysis of mathematical textbook tasks at second-level in Ireland, in the context of the introduction of the revised curriculum entitled ‘Project Maths’. This work aims to gain greater insight into the mathematical tasks that students and teachers encounter on a daily basis, to attain some understanding of the teaching and learning taking place in Irish classrooms. A total of 7635 tasks on the topics of Pattern, Sequences and Series and Differential Calculus contained in three textbook series for senior cycle, in editions available before and those available after the curriculum change were analysed. The analysis was informed by the use of five frameworks: an amended version of the Project Maths problem-solving objectives, a novelty framework designed during the course of this research, Levels of Cognitive Demand (Smith and Stein, 1998), Lithner’s reasoning framework (Lithner, 2008) and Usiskin’s model of mathematical understanding (Usiskin, 2012)....

An Analysis of Road Safety and Older Driver Behaviour
(2011)
McHugh, Tara
Abstract:
This paper analyses road safety and the behaviour of older drivers in the area of County Monaghan. County Monaghan is a border County with many of the interviewees living in border towns. The literature review covers aspects related to issues regarding road safety and driver behaviour, not only to older drivers but to drivers of all ages. The literature review revealed the importance of road safety worldwide, highlighting the hazardous outcomes of negative driver behaviour. A methodology was planned and carried out to analyse older driver behaviour. A pilot study was conducted to determine the suitability and relevance of the methodology. The use of semi-structured interviews revealed solid data, displaying older driver behaviour and attitudes to road safety. In total 50 older drivers were interviewed, all of whom reside in the area of County Monaghan. Self reported behaviour including speeding, mobile phone use, drinking and driving, accident involvement and seat-belt use were exam...

An Analysis of Teachers’ use of ICT in a Selection of Irish Schools
(2005)
Mulcahy, Patricia
Abstract:
The Government of Ireland has made a large financial investment in the field of Information and Communication Technology in the Irish educational sector. The Author was interested to discover how teachers have benefited from this investment. A questionnaire and interview based study was conducted in a number of primary and secondary schools. This allowed for the selection of ICT interested teachers for interviews. The interviews were designed to cover the range of uses that teachers were making of the technology. This included class preparation and in class use. The interviews concluded by offering the teachers an opportunity to voice their opinions as to the future of ICT in Irish classrooms. The teachers suggested strategies that could be implemented to increase the amount of ICT usage by teachers in Irish classrooms. This study showed that only a minority of teachers are actually making regular use of ICT for class preparation or in class with their students. However, the majorit...

An analysis of the impact of formative peer assessment and screencast tutor feedback on veterinary nursing students' learning
(2016)
Brereton, Bernadette; Dunne, Karen
Abstract:
This paper examines the ways in which the learning environment can be enhanced for higher level learners by means of feedback via screencasting and peer assessment. A group of final year veterinary nursing students in DkIT were given tutor feedback via screencasting and encouraged to formatively peer assess each other’s work. Their attitudes to these feedback methods and their reflections on the usefulness of these methods for their learning form the basis of this paper. Deep learning, improved communication leading to greater social cohesion in the learning group and increased self-confidence are positive outcomes which such methods can evince if learner fear and apprehension is carefully addressed and controlled.

An analysis of the philosophy of Paulo Freire for the purpose of structuring community education programmes
(1976)
Rouine, Brigid Barbara
Abstract:
A model had been designed for a Community school for a small town in fulfilment of a written assignment during the first year of the writer's post-graduate course. This model embraced education from pre-school through primary, middle and senior levels to further education for individuals and for community. The population of this parish is approximately three thousand. Within the entire parish there is a variety of "communities", from at one extreme, those living in affluence, prosperity and luxury to the other extreme where exists social and economic deprivation that impinges on the day to day efforts to live in a community that offers a meagre sense of fulfilment as well as constraints of human development and of self-actualization. The further education plan of this proposed community school was characterized by a diversity of courses, a flexibility of methods, an adaptability of curricula and a variety of educational venues in order to embrace effectively this com...

An analysis of the training needs of staff in the further education sector in the Republic of Ireland.
(2005)
McNamara, Gerry; Mulcahy, Carmel; O'Hara, Joe
Abstract:
This article examines the training needs of educators working in the further education (FE), adult education, and Second Chance sectors in the Republic of Ireland. The research on which it is based was funded jointly by the European Union Leonardo da Vinci Programme and the Department of Education and Science of Ireland and took place from 1998 to 2002. It consisted of a survey of the coordinators of 162 further education (FE) centres and follow up interviews with 13 of these coordinators. The paper concentrates largely on the skills and competencies identified as the key to providing a quality service for the clientele of FE in Ireland. It begins by describing the different types of provision which the FE label refers to in Ireland and then presents some quantitative data which establishes the training deficit suffered by staff in the system. The main part of the paper is based on the interview data obtained, which offers a very complex picture of the skills and competencies percei...

An Appreciative Inquiry into the Preparation of Undergraduate Education Studies Students to Value and Embrace Diversity
(2010)
Keane, Margaret
Abstract:
This study is a qualitative appreciative inquiry into how students of an undergraduate Ed. and Training programme are prepared for diversity. The setting for the study is the School of Education Studies at Dublin City University and the research involves a review of programmes and moudule intentions and qualitative data collected from final year students, academic staff and alumni of the programme. The study includes a literature review that examines the conceptualisation of diversity and looks at diversity as a consequence of a changing world. It then examines current policy and practice in relation to diversity and education in the EU and in ireland. The philosophical basis for the study is constructivism and aspects of an Appreciative Inquiry (AI)approach are used to give a structure and a focus to the gathering and analysing of data. The study further suggests how AI can be used as a model of course evaluation. Findings arise directly from the observations made by study partic...

An Approach to Designing Services in a Technological University: Re-engineering or Seduction?
(2016)
Quinn, Eileen; Edge, Olivia; Feeney, Sharon
Abstract:
This paper is written in the context of three Irish higher education institutions negotiating a merger in order to become Ireland’s inaugural ‘Technological University’. To be designated as a technological university (TU), the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT), Institute of Technology Tallaght (ITT) and Institute of Technology Blanchardstown (ITB) are first required to merge and to then transform how they approach and deliver education and the services that support it. In this study, an experimental approach to entice into existence newly designed student- related services in the TU was trialled. The design of the study comprised a series of mini-projects. The authors sought to create within small teams, an embodied experience of the messiness of change as they initiated a move towards becoming a flexible, agile and responsive organisation. The assertion of this study is that by embodying such experiences, change moves from being a process-driven re- engineering project towards a...

An approach to teaching PID controller tuning
(2006)
O'Dwyer, Aidan
Abstract:
This paper discusses an approach to the teaching of PID controller tuning methods to students in control engineering at Dublin Institute of Technology. The method involves analytically calculating the gain margin, phase margin and maximum sensitivity for PI and PID controlled systems whose process is modelled in first order lag plus time delay (FOLPD) form. Students can examine the performance of many tuning rules from graphical results, allowing insight to be developed as to the most rational choice of the tuning rule for the application. Some preliminary work done to develop an expert system to allow a greater automation of the procedure for recommending a tuning rule, for user defined requirements, is also described.

An embedded approach to learning to learn online: strategies to increase student retention through developing subject-based competence
(2006)
MacKeogh, Kay; Lorenzi, Francesca
Abstract:
Increasing student retention on elearning courses is a matter of great concern to providers. One of the strategies employed by Oscail – the National Distance Education Centre has been to address the preparedness of students to learn online, and ways in which student expectations can be ascertained and managed (see Lorenzi & Mac Keogh, 2006; Stevenson, Mac Keogh & Sander, 2006; Mac Keogh and Lorenzi, 2005; Lorenzi, Mac Keogh and Fox, 2004). Oscail’s SPEL programme is a preparatory course for students intending to enrol on an undergraduate BA programme and represents the ‘embedded’ approach (Wingate, 2006) to developing skills for learning. However, on tracking the performance of students transferring to specific subject programmes, it has become evident that a generic, once-off, elearning study skills programme is insufficient to prepare students for learning within a disciplinary culture. Even students who have successfully completed the SPEL module drop out when faced with ...

An evaluation of a blended programme of teacher education in Ireland
(2015)
McHugh, Bernadette
Abstract:
The purpose of this research was to examine the blended-learning primary teacher education course, the Higher Diploma in Arts in Education (HDAPE), offered by Hibernia College in Ireland with a view to ascertaining what can be learned from this unique course that might inform future practice at college and national levels. An investigation of this blended-learning course is warranted as it has not been conducted previously and thereby this research adds to the bank of knowledge on teacher education. Hibernia College is unique because it is the only private provider of Initial Teacher Education (ITE) for primary and post-primary teachers in Ireland. Furthermore it is the only provider to utilise a blended-learning approach and now as the largest provider of primary teachers in Ireland, Hibernia College exerts a significant influence on the number of primary teachers trained using the consecutive model of ITE. This researcher used a mixed methods approach gathering both qualitative ...

Abstract:
This paper describes a collaborative project conducted by the three principal universities in Dublin to implement and evaluate a competence assessment tool for use by nursing students and their assessors while on clinical placements. In the greater Dublin area, students from three universities are required to share clinical placement sites in specialist practice areas. Accordingly, a liaison group was established among the three universities, in order to develop a common competence-based assessment tool and related protocols for its use. The newly developed competence assessment tool was implemented in 2004, and in 2006, an evaluation of its use was conducted by means of a survey among a non-probability sample of students and their preceptors. Results from the survey data indicate generally positive attitudes to the structure of the tool and positive experiences of its operation in practice. However, respondents indicated dissatisfaction with the amount of time spent completing the ...

An evaluation of An Bord Altranais on-line e-learning programme: introducing competence assessment

Ryan, Ann Marie
Abstract:
Background An Bord Altranais, like most statutory and regulatory nursing bodies worldwide, is responsible for, and concerned with, the promotion of high standards of professional education, training, practice and professional conduct among nurses and midwives. The emphasis on "quality" through standards in education, practice and conduct is now considered as being at the heart of clinical governance. Departments of health in the UK and Europe now espouse similar principles under the general term "clinical governance". Clinical governance is concerned with continuing professional development as well as issues of audit, risk management and evidence- based practice. Training institutions are expected to develop capabilities that will enable graduate nurses to function efficiently in the workplace. This is the basis of the competency movement - for each profession a number of necessary competencies should be identified. Educational institutions and practice placement...

Abstract:
In 2010/12 an innovative children’s palliative care interprofessional educational project funded by the Irish Hospice Foundation was undertaken in a University faculty (AUTHORS NAMED). This initiative responded to international educational recommendations to meet the palliative care needs of children. The project involved the development and delivery of 3 standalone modules at Master’s level and a substantive research evaluation of the project to examine stakeholders and students perspectives to provide an insight into their experiences and to gather data for future developments. The research evaluation was conducted in two parts, part one sought students’ evaluation and part two sought stakeholders’, curriculum developers and lecturers’ feedback. This paper reports the students’ evaluation. Findings indicate that students perceived undertaking the modules provided them with the opportunity for improved interprofessional learning and they found modular content and assessment challeng...
