(Re)connecting children with nature? A sociological study of environmental education in Ireland.
(2014)
O'Malley, Sarah
Abstract:
The outcome of environmental education to solve the ecological crises by producing an environmentally sustainable society is uncertain. The marginalisation of environmental education in mainstream education, its precarious position within broader concepts of (environmental) sustainability and the lack of critical evaluation of current practices finds it characterised by anecdotal narratives. It is claimed that modernisation is leading to childrens growing (dis)connect with the natural environment and brings additional responsibility to the relationship between society and the natural environment. But does environmental education (re)connect children with the natural environment, and to what extent is it (in)effective? Through a detailed examination of the evolution of environmental education in Ireland, this thesis makes an original contribution to the field of environmental education research while also offering useful insights for environmental education policy and practice. Educational Buildings as Educational Buildings: Can sustainable architecture help support sustainability in the curriculum?
(2017)
Speedie, Claire; Mulville, Mark
Abstract:
This paper explores whether the architectural design of educational buildings - by incorporating an expression of the sustainable design - helps to educate users towards adoption of sustainable practices. Utilising observational studies from primary schools incorporating sustainable design measures, the research explored their impact on the curriculum. School buildings accommodate the educational process but design briefs do not require that buildings educate their users. The paper demonstrated that sustainable features of the buildings were not well integrated into the curriculum and that one explanation was the lack of interpretation incorporated into the architecture to support teachers lacking an appreciation of sustainable built environments as part of a global ecosystem. Primary schools tend to deliver environmental education focussed on nature study and outdoor education rather than sustainable development. Sustainable buildings often exhibit a performance gap for which build...

Evaluating Effects of an Exhibition Visit on Pre-Service Elementary Teachers’ Understandings of Climate Change
(2016)
Saribas, Deniz; Doganca Kucuk, Zerrin; Ertepinar, Hamide
Abstract:
This research aims to investigate the extent to which a visit to a climate change exhibition embedded within an environmental education course affects pre-service elementary teachers’ understandings about climate change. The sample comprised 58 pre-service teachers, enrolled in the environmental education course offered as part of the Elementary Education program at a private university in Turkey during the 2011/2012 academic year. The course lasted 13 weeks and was composed of various environmental issues as well as an exhibition visit and student reflections. Pre- and post-reflections written by pre-service elementary teachers’ were analyzed and coded to examine the effect of the visit on their understanding of climate change. It was found that the course, and specifically the exhibition, had a positive effect on their understanding of climate change and ways in which to ameliorate the problem.

UCC Open Arboretum Project: Trees as a teaching and outreach tool for environmental and plant education

Abstract:
The University College Cork (UCC) Open Arboretum Project aims to re-imagine the original purpose of the University’s tree collection – as a teaching tool. The arboretum represents a unique on-campus learning space which has been under-utilised for teaching in recent times. The arboretum has the capacity to engage students, staff and visitors in a tangible way with important global issues (e.g. the climate emergency and biodiversity loss). It is also an opportunity to combat ‘plant blindness’, i.e. the ambivalence shown to plants in our environment compared to often charismatic animal species. Wandersee and Schussler (1999) coined the term “plant blindness” to describe the preference for animals rather than plants that they saw in their own biology students. Knapp (2019) has argued that, in fact, humans are less ‘plant blind’ and more ‘everything-but-vertebrates-blind’ with school curricula and television programming over-emphasising the role of vertebrates at the expense of other gr...
