?They?re Always Complicated but That?s the Meaning of Family in My Eyes?: Homeless Youth Making Sense of ?Family? and Family Relationships
(2018)
PARKER, SARAH; Mayock, Paula
Abstract:
Analyses of the relevance of family for young people are more visible than previously within youth research. Nonetheless, understanding of the nature and meaning of family relationships for those who experience separation from their family, including homeless youth, is relatively weak. Based on selected findings from a qualitative longitudinal study, this article explores the meaning-making processes of homeless young people with explicit attention to the ways in which ?family? is produced and (re)negotiated in their lives over time. Four themes are presented?family as reliable and supportive; family as interrupted and ?broken?; family as fragile and elusive; and family as fluid and ambiguous?revealing the unfolding nature of young people?s constructions of family and family relationships. The enduring impact of separation, dislocation, and conflict on how young people ?make sense? of familial experiences is discussed, and we conclude with the practice implications arising from the ...

'Blessed are the young for they shall inherit the national debt': Solidarity between generations in the Irish crisis
(2014)
CONLON, CATHERINE; TIMONEN, VIRPI
Abstract:
Ireland has gained a reputation for peaceable acceptance of austerity following a European Union/International Monetary Fund bailout in 2010. While proponents of austerity praise Ireland?s stoicism, critics of global capitalism argue that individuals and families are paying for mistakes made by elites. However, little is known about the strategies people adopt to cope with cutbacks to welfare entitlements. Drawing on a study of solidarity between generations living in Ireland in 2011-12, this article explores the lived experience of economic crisis and austerity. One hundred interviews with people of all ages and socio-economic backgrounds are analysed using constructivist grounded theory. Data show how austerity impacts differentially according to socio-economic status. While solidarity between generations leads to re-distribution of resources within families, providing some security for people with access to family resources, it reinforces inequality at societal level. We conclude...

'One of the best members of the family': continuity and change in young children’s relationships with their grandparents
(2015)
Geraghty, Ruth; Gray, Jane; Ralph, David
Abstract:
As societies age, there is growing scholarly and public policy interest in the relationships between grandparents and grandchildren. Much of this research has focused on grandparents’ role as carers, since mothers are more likely to remain in the labour force, and as grandparents live longer and healthier lives, making them more available to descendent generations. The scholarship therefore focuses on grandparenting from adult perspectives – either from that of the grandparent or the ‘middle’ parent generation (Timmonen and Arber 2012, p. 10). This chapter examines the grandchild/grandparent relationship from a child’s-eye perspective. Drawing on two major archived qualitative datasets, it brings retrospective life history narratives into dialogue with contemporary qualitative interviews in order to unpack continuity and change in young children’s experiences of their relationships with their grandparents from the 1930s to the present. We show that there has been continuity in the w...

'Working away in that Grey Area...' A qualitative exploration of the challenges general practitioners experience when managing behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia
(2017)
Jennings, Aisling A.; Foley, Tony; McHugh, Sheena M.; Browne, John P.; Bradley, Colin P.
Abstract:
Background: general practitioners (GPs) have identified the management of behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) as a particularly challenging aspect of dementia care. However, there is a paucity of research on why GPs find BPSD challenging and how this influences the care they offer to their patients with dementia. Objectives: to establish the challenges GPs experience when managing BPSD; to explore how these challenges influence GPs’ management decisions; and to identify strategies for overcoming these challenges. Design: qualitative study of GPs experiences of managing BPSD. Methods: semi-structured interviews were conducted with 16 GPs in the Republic of Ireland. GPs were purposively recruited to include participants with differing levels of experience caring for people with BPSD in nursing homes and in community settings to provide maximum diversity of views. Interviews were analysed thematically. Results: three main challenges of managing BPSD were identifie...

‘Systemic Trauma’: The Impact on Parents Whose Children Have Experienced Sexual Abuse
(2014)
Kilroy, Sarah J.; Egan, Jonathan; Maliszewska, Aneta; Sarma, Kiran M.
Abstract:
This paper examines the impact on parents in an Irish context whose children have experienced sexual abuse and aims to explore the pathways to distress. This is in order to understand what factors facilitate or hinder parents from supporting their child to the best of their ability, given that parental support is a crucial moderating factor in children’s recoveries. Semi-structured interviews were carried out with 13 parents in this context and analyzed using a grounded theory methodology. The overall concept that emerged was termed ‘systemic trauma’ and was composed of eight categories that help to explain the pathways of impact for parents. This model can help clinicians understand and respond to the needs of parents in the aftermath of CSA.

“Doing the Job as a Parent”: Parenting Alone, Work, and Family Policy in Ireland
(2012)
Bradley, Ciara
Abstract:
Recent studies of family life in Ireland have focused on changes in “traditional” family structures, including the increase in one-parent families. This article illustrates the impact dominant conceptions in Irish society that privilege the family based on marriage have on one-parent family policy. The authors focus on two key areas of social interaction associated with family life— parenthood and (un)paid work—to identify both congruences and tensions between social policy and the needs of one-parent families. The article draws on interview and survey data collected in Galway in 2007 to show how existing welfare policies create some opportunities for those parenting alone while at the same time perpetuating inequalities within the gendered family context and across multiple generations.

“It’s Like Throwing a Pebble Into Water and There is a Ripple Effect Throughout the Entire Pond” The Effect of Drug Use on the Family System
(2010)
Stack, Aoife
Abstract:
Alcohol and drug problems affect not only those using these substances but also family members of the individual substance user. There has been a historic neglect within the addiction sphere of both research and practice pertaining to the effect of drug use on the family. Each family member is uniquely affected with negative outcomes ranging from economic hardship to violence being perpetrated against them (Csiernik, 2002). Thus, treating only the individual with the substance problem is limiting and serves an overly narrow orientation for the enhancement of both family and community health. This study addressed an important gap in literature with regard to the experiences of families affected by drug use. The research involved qualitative in-depth interviews and focus group interviews undertaken with a broad range of participants. In total 51 individuals took part in the study. The sample comprised two subgroups: family members (47) and professionals (4). The family member’s subgro...

A Decade of Reflection: Early Childhood Care and Education in Ireland 1996-2006
(2006)
Hayes, Noirin; Bradley, Siobhan
Abstract:
You are welcome to the first seminar in a CSER series intended to consider aspects of early childhood education and care1 [ECEC] from a policy, research and practice perspective and promote discussion and debate. In this introduction to the seminar I want to outline some of the thinking behind the topic for today and present - with limited elaboration - a personal reflection to add to the discussion and debate. In choosing to reflect on the development and impact of early childhood education and care policy in Ireland it is no surprise that the decade 1996 - 2006 should act as the framework. Taking any decade as a period of review has a certain danger to it, providing a definition to it which may give a false sense of the reality of policy development and practice. Nonetheless, it could be argued that ECEC became a serious policy issue in Ireland in 1996 following the signing of the final sections of the Child Care Act in December and the implementation of the Preschool Regulations ...

A double segment periodicity underlies segment generation in centipede development
(2018)
Chipman, Ariel D; Arthur, Wallace; Akam, Michael
Abstract:
The number of leg-bearing segments in centipedes varies extensively, between 15 and 191, and yet it is always odd [1, 2]. This suggests that segment generation in centipedes involves a stage with double segment periodicity and that evolutionary variation in segment number reflects the generation of these double segmental units. However, previous studies have revealed no trace of this [3-5]. Here we report the expression of two genes, an odd-skipped related gene (odr1) and a caudal homolog, that serve as markers for early steps of segment formation in the geophilomorph centipede, Strigamia maritima. Dynamic expression of odr1 around the proctodaeum resolves into a series of concentric rings, revealing a pattern of double segment periodicity in overtly unsegmented tissue. Initially, the expression of the caudal homolog mirrors this double segment periodicity, but shortly before engrailed expression and overt segmentation, the intercalation of additional stripes generates a repeat with...

Abstract:
Research evidence suggests that education can play an important role in a family?s acceptance and support of a trans(gender) young person. However, there is a lack of robust evidence around the impact of education programs for these families. This article reports the findings of a mixed-methods evaluation of an online education program developed for families of trans young people. Surveys were administered before and after participation in the education program to assess the impact of the program on several measures, including trans-related knowledge, self-reflection and insight, family problem-solving, family communication, self-efficacy, and views of gender identity. Interviews were used to explore family members? experiences of the program, its perceived impact, and recommendations for further development. The survey findings revealed a statistically significant increase in knowledge scores from the pre-education program to post-education program. Interview participants felt the ...

(1995)
Brosnan, Elizabeth Gary; Le Cheile. Family Resource Centre (Mallow) Ltd.; North Cork Traveller Group.
Abstract:
In October 1997, women from the Traveller community in North Cork identified the need to form a women's group and approached Le Cheile Family Resource Centre to facilitate its establishment. With the provision of a varied programme the group moved from strength to strength and expanded in number. As a result of the commitment shown by the group, FAS, Le Cheile Family Resource Centre (Mallow) Ltd and Avondhu Development Group Ltd. further facilitated their development. The North Cork Traveller Forum was established in 2000 by Avondhu Development Group Ltd and the North Cork Traveller Group. Its aim is to facilitate the inclusion of the North Cork Traveller community in the decision making processes which affect their lives. The North Cork Traveller Forum hopes to develop integrated responses to Traveller needs, through encouraging the engagement of statutory agencies, community groups and voluntary groups in addressing Traveller issues. From the outset the Travellers were encour...

Abstract:
Since 1988 services to meet the collective needs of Family Carers were established, such as Caring in Home Training and Carers Groups. It emerged that 12 Family Carers needed time for themselves and required access to services and support. In 2001, Caring for Carers in partnership with the Mid Western Health Board agreed to establish a Nurse Led Carers Clinic in Co. Clare (on a pilot basis) to meet the needs of Family Carers of older people and older people who were themselves Carers. Around the same time the Midland Health Board followed by other Health Boards appointed Carer Coordinators almost all of whom had a background in Public Health Nursing

A non-apoptotic role for caspase-9 in muscle differentiation
(2018)

Abstract:
Caspases, a family of cysteine proteases most often investigated for their roles in apoptosis, have also been demonstrated to have functions that are vital for the efficient execution of cell differentiation. One such role that has been described is the requirement of caspase-3 for the differentiation of skeletal myoblasts into myotubes but, as yet, the mechanism leading to caspase-3 activation in this case remains elusive. Here, we demonstrate that caspase-9, an initiator caspase in the mitochondrial death pathway, is responsible for the activation of caspase-3 in differentiating C2C12 cells. Reduction of caspase-9 levels, using an shRNA construct, prevented caspase-3 activation and inhibited myoblast fusion. Myosin-heavy-chain expression, which accompanies myoblastic differentiation, was not caspase-dependent. Overexpression of Bcl-xL, a protein that inhibits caspase-9 activation, had the same effect on muscle differentiation as knockdown of caspase-9. These data suggest that the ...

Abstract:
This report presents the results of a qualitative, process study evaluation of the Ballyhaunis Community Preschool and ‘Greater Tomorrow’ crèche services, conducted by the UNESCO Child and Family Research Centre (UCFRC), NUI, Galway in 2015. Currently, the community preschool and the crèche facility are located in the grounds of St Mary’s Abbey and the Old Convent grounds respectively, close to Ballyhaunis town centre, Co. Mayo. Together, both services provide childcare spaces for approximately 60 children, employing seven staff in total. In both services, all staff members are qualified to NFQ Level 5 standards or higher. One senior staff member in the crèche is trained to NFQ Level 7, and the manager of both the crèche and preschool services is completing an NFQ Level 8 degree programme in Early Childhood Studies and Practice at NUI, Galway. The Greater Tomorrow crèche caters for children aged between 18 months and 3 years and operates a 4-day service from Monday to Thursday. The ...

A qualitative exploration of ‘coming out’ in the context of a heterosexual marriage in Ireland: the perspectives of children, spouses and self
(2019)
Daly, Siobhán Christine
Abstract:
Despite several decades of research into the sexual orientation of parents and spouses, there is a dearth of literature that explores the experience of having a parent or spouse declare a change in sexual orientation in the context of a heterosexual marriage and a historically conservative, religious culture. Furthermore, studies have largely ignored this experience from a holistic familial perspective. Aim. The aim of this research is to explore how Irish children experience a parent coming out as Lesbian, Gay or Bisexual (LGB), and to examine the ‘lived’ experience of coming out in the context of heterosexual marriage in Ireland from the perspective of the heterosexual and the same-gender spouse. Enhancing understanding of this phenomenon and exploring possible implications for practice is sought. While the thesis initially sought to explore the coming out process, the importance of the parental/marital separation experience became clear as the research progressed. Inevitably th...

A systematic concept analysis of `technology dependent': challenging the terminology
(2021)

Abstract:
There are an increasing number of children who are dependent on medical technology to sustain their lives. Although significant research on this issue is taking place, the terminology used is variable and the concept of technology dependence is ill-defined. A systematic concept analysis was conducted examining the attributes, antecedents, and consequences of the concept of technology dependent, as portrayed in the literature. We found that this concept refers to a wide range of clinical technology to support biological functioning across a dependency continuum, for a range of clinical conditions. It is commonly initiated within a complex biopsychosocial context and has wide ranging sequelae for the child and family, and health and social care delivery. Conclusion: The term technology dependent is increasingly redundant. It objectifies a heterogenous group of children who are assisted by a myriad of technology and who adapt to, and function with, this assistance in numerous ways. What...

A tie that blinds: family and ideology in Ireland

Abstract:
This paper examines the origins of the role of the family as a social symbol in Irish society. The source, it argues, is in the nature of the inequalities that were present in late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Ireland. These were not simply through classes but also through families. The ideology of the family emerged to deny and to displace the tensions created by the nature of these kinds of inequalities.

Adolescents Who Sexually Abuse: Exploring the Impact on the Family
(2010)
Carroll, Tracey
Abstract:
This research project considers a frequently ignored dimension of adolescent sexual abuse, the parents and families of the adolescent perpetrator. This study focuses on eliciting professionals‟ views of the impact on the family when an adolescent member has sexually abused. The context for the study is outlined with an account of the prevalence of and explanations for adolescent sexual abuse. The study proceeds to look at legislation and the impact on labelling. Areas relating to the family on the impact of disclosure, parental reactions and the process of engagement are explored. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with five professionals working within the child welfare and criminal justice system who worked with young people who had sexually abused and their families. The purpose of the study was to explore with professionals their perceived perception of the impact having an adolescent sexual abusing member has on families, from their contact with family members.
