A pamphlet in French on the banishment of Catholic clergy from Ireland in 1653
(2012)
Ó Ciosáin, Eamon
Abstract:
The city of Nantes was a focus for Irish Catholic clergy in exile from the mid-seventeenth century onwards. Several bishops either resided there or stayed for short periods after the Cromwellian campaign, and Irish clergy can be found there in records from 1640 onwards, as well as a group of nuns. A twelve-page pamphlet Récit véritable du bannissement du clergé catholique du royaume d’Irlande par les commissaires du Parlement de la République d’Angleterre en 1653 was printed in Nantes some time after the declaration by the parliamentary commissioners banishing clergy from Ireland in January 1652 (old style). Only one copy is known to exist. It is held in the Bibliothèque Nationale de France. The document appears not to have been used by historians, although it was listed in the bibliography of George Ascoli’s important study of Franco–British relations, La Grande- Bretagne devant l’opinion française. It is reproduced below in order to make it available to historians and students of ...

Maher, Eamon
Abstract:

The year 2013 marked the centenary of the birth of Albert Camus. In this article Eamon Maher considers Camus' writing on religion, focusing in particular on two novels, The Outsider and The Plaque. Attitude of French Writer-Priest, Dead 33 Years, Reflected in Word and Deed by Pope Francis
(2014)

Abstract:

On October 30th, 1913, in the French village of Montauban-de- Bretagne, Joseph Lemarchand was born, the only child of a tenant-farming family that was ripped asunder by the death of his father in the Great War. A few decades later, as a writer-priest stationed in the Breton capital, Rennes, Lemarchand took the pseudonym Jean Sulivan, a name inspired by his fascination with the movie Sullivan’s Travels . When reading Pope Francis’ groundbreaking interview last August, I had the uncanny feeling that the new pontiff’s views strongly echo what Sulivan was writing in the 1960s and 1970s. A commitment to the poor and the marginalised; an unwillingness to pass moral judgments; a dislike of legalism and decrees from on high; and a distrust of monolithic institutions form the essence of Sulivan’s writings.

Abstract:
Some traces remain of the immigration of individuals from France to Ireland, probably for reasons of trade and industry, in the late sixteenth and early seven teenth centuries. However, the arrival of French Protestants on a large scale took place in four successive waves: from 1662, after the Restoration; in 1681 and 1685, following the dragonnades in Poitou and the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes, respectively; after 1691 in the wake of the English Revolution of 1688 and the decisive victory of the forces of William III in Ireland over the Jacobite cause; and finally in 1752, as a result of a campaign in the Languedoc to enforce Roman Catholic baptism on those who continued to worship clandestinely as Protestants. Raymond Hylton is concerned with the first three waves, estimating that a total of between 8,000 and 10,000 French Protestants arrived in Ireland between 1662 and 1700 (pp. 81, 204), although other historians are more conservative in their estimates: 5,000, according t...

Case study: examining the design and educational considerations in developing and implementing a French course using Moodle for use on mobile devices
(2013)
Cormican, Maeve
Abstract:
This case study aimed to examine the effectiveness of a Moodle site designed with mobile devices in mind. Mobile devices can be used in a mobile learning (M-Learning) environment which may prove to be more successful than traditional learning for today’s technically minded students. A potential exists to combine mobility in a learning environment to provide learning anywhere and at any time. Students have the opportunity to communicate interactively with their peers or with their teacher at any time, wherever they may be. This case study involved dividing a First Year French class into two groups. The class was divided into two groups based on access to Internet at home and past exam results. Group A students accessed the learning activities and assessments through mobile devices (laptops, tablets and smartphones) and their textbook. Group B students only had access to their textbook. Qualitative and quantitative data collection tools were employed to highlight the learning benefits...

Challenges and Possibilities for World Literature, Global Literature, and Translation
(2013)
Shields, Kathleen
Abstract:
In her article "Challenges and Possibilities for World Literature, Global Literature, and Translation" Kathleen Shields argues that Goethe's concept of Weltliteratur was grounded in translation practice: in creating a canon representing the best of each nation, translation occupied centre stage. Nation-building in Europe in the nineteenth century was combined with the idea of transnational literature where translation was an important tool of transmission and exchange, as well as a way of decentering from a strong monolingual base. There are four challenges for comparative literature now. Firstly, the nation state is weakening. Secondly, despite the growing interest in world literature since the 1990s, Goethe's idea of Weltliteratur is in decline, replaced by the rise of English as a lingua franca and pivot language for translations. Thirdly, asymmetries in relations between languages, and the very small number of translation languages, are becoming more marked. ...

Collaborative Digital Storytelling for Language Learning Prior to Erasmus Mobility
(2014)
Gabaudan, Odette
Abstract:

Students who avail of an Erasmus mobility gain invaluable experience in an international environment. The period abroad is a unique opportunity for personal, linguistic and cultural development. However, studying in a partner institution comes with its many challenges. As well as dealing with academic matters and day to day living, students need to make a new circle of friends. Preparation prior to departure undoubtedly contributes to the success of the study abroad period. Nevertheless, the language they learn in an academic setting only partly equips them to communicate with their peers in the foreign country. Slang expressions and colloquialism are widely used among young adults. A lack of familiarity with this register of language can hamper the development of new relationships.

This project was developed with a group of students in the Dublin Institute of Technology, Ireland. The Erasmus mobility is a compulsory element of their programme of study. T...

Abstract:
The writing of memoirs in seventeenth-century France was an activity that took place on the margins. On the margins of society: those who wrote memoirs usually did so from exile, from prison, because they had fallen from grace into disgrace, or because they had come to a crisis point in their lives. On the margins of history: memoirs and their writers had a conflictual relationship with the official history of their time, which they set out to contradict, correct, or amend with their own story, their own outsider (yet also, insider) point of view. Memoir writing is a literature of testimony, which points to a tension between individual experience and culturally sanctioned narratives. Thus, to write memoirs in the early modem period is to perform an act of inscription that is always political. It is an act of resistance to the tendency of cultures to remember and forget in partisan fashion, which exposes that tendency by inscribing other experiences and voices into the collective mem...

Abstract:
Professor MacKenzie has made avail- able in English an essay and a novel by François Mauriac, dating respectively from 1929 and 1930. These may not be the author’s best-known works but they are important in the context of his writings as a whole in that they reflect and emerge from the critical years in Mauriac’s personal life and in his career as a writer. Professor MacKenzie illus- trates this point convincingly in his excellent introduction

In the words of the Bishop of Meaux - Julien Green on Bossuet
(2004)
O'Dwyer, Michael
Abstract:
Julien Green's Journal abounds in precise, regularly noted references to his vast reading. Certain dominant trends can be noted in his choice of books. His choice favours titles which have spiritual themes, Anglo-Saxon literature, poetry, books on art and autobiographical writings. In the domain of spiritual literature he reveals a particular affinity with Port-Royal and Pascal. While this affinity with the seventeenth century is well known, Green's reading of Bossuet has been largely ignored. As this year marks the tercentenary of Bossuet's death, it may be of interest to explore his comments on his readings of the Bishop of Meaux. We will concentrate on certain themes which have an appeal for Green, but we will note above all his comments on the tone and style in which they are rendered.

Irish Nuns in Nantes 1650-1659.
(2004)
Ó Ciosáin, Eamon
Abstract:
References by various authors to a small group of Franciscan Nuns of the Third Order Regular who fled from Ireland to Brittany at the end of 1649 or very early in 1650 have been based on hitherto scant sources, principally Travers' history of Nantes (1841)1. The location of their convent of origin in Ireland remains to be ascertained. The following details are drawn from Travers and have been cited by the authors in question: the date of arrival of the nuns in the Loire estuary is 'some six or seven months' previous to the report drawn up for the municipal authorities in Nantes on 17th July 1650; they were eight in number, and were assisted by an Irish orphan girl, Catherine Roche, who had arrived in Nantes circa 1646 and served as their interpreter2, their confessor, an Irish Franciscan priest whose identity remains to be ascertained, and a maidservant (presumably local). They lived a cloistered life in La Bignolière house in Richebourg, a suburb of the city. Accord...

LA DIFFÉRENCE DES SEXES DANS L’OEUVRE D’AGOTA KRISTOF
(2012)
Cutcan, Simona
Abstract:
Agota Kristof’s fictional world shows human existence as pointless and her main characters’ lives are defined by loss of vital relationships, nostalgia and lack of meaning. The purpose of this thesis was to investigate the female characters and their personal relationships. Until now, the critics have focused on the trilogy, with its rhizomatic structure and portrayal of the dislocation of exile, and have neglected her plays, short stories and autobiography. In our study, the texts were analysed through the framework of materialist feminism, examining issues of women’s subordination in society and the family, of which the most extreme form is prostitution. In order to highlight the lack of female voice or perspective in the texts, narratology was used, with an emphasis on voice and focalisation. The textual analysis undertaken shows that, from this perspective, her work can be divided into two different periods. The first one contains her earlier writing in the form of the short sto...

Le Flâneur des deux rives: poétisation greenienne de l’espace Parisien.
(2001)
O'Dwyer, Michael
Abstract:
Our goal is to study how Julien Green brings to light the particular poetry of certain Parisian landscapes: the district of the Bourse, rue Jean-Bologne, crossing the Pont-Neuf, the banks of the Seine... We will underline the effect that outside space has on the inner psychological space and show the relationship between geographical expanse and oneiric and spiritual space. At this point, the boundaries between real and imaginary tend to fade away. The only thing that is important is the "reality of vision" and these precise places are often transposed into his novels, for example in "Dark beauty" (Léviathan) or in "The Strange River" (Épaves) where we find striking and unexpected contrasts. In any case, "the Paris that he stores in his memory and that looks more beautiful to him than that of his neighbor" remains unmistakably present for all (Paris, pp. 45-46).

Léopold Sédar Senghor’s Translations and the Trajectory of a World Writer
(2010)
Shields, Kathleen
Abstract:
Senghor’s seldom-studied translations (grouped with his juvenilia and published in OEuvre poétique in 1964) illustrate a process of identity formation whereby he can variously represent France, Senegal, Africa, and poetry, ultimately coming to occupy a position as world writer. My analysis of these texts takes into account recent articles on translation and African writers: what did Senghor translate, how did he translate, why did he translate, and why did he stop translating? Strategies of universalizing, flattening, and mystification reveal a process of acculturation rather than cultural crossfertilization. Central to my argument is the contrast between Senghor’s concept of métissage and the more current use of the term as Antoine Berman applies it to translation. One optimistic narrative is that as decolonization takes place, more and more translation, increased mutual cultural understanding, and hybridization also occur. Senghor’s translations are part of another process, where ...

Les Paysannes dans Les Romans Champetres de George Sand.
(1994)
Marie-France, Pasquier Mc Manus
Abstract:

Léviathan: A Forgotten Nouvelle by Julien Green
(1996)
O'Dwyer, Michael
Abstract:
Julien Green's nouvelle Leviathan (1926)1 tends to merit only a few passing references in critical works on the author. This is regrettable because this early work in a literary output spanning the years 1920 to 1995 (at least!) can be seen to orchestrate in embryonic form many of the themes and preoccupations which have become permanent features of Green's landscape. It may even be considered a microcosm of his work as a whole.
