A collection of papers on drug issues in Ireland
(2001)
Moran, Rosalyn; Dillon, Lucy; O'Brien, Mary; Mayock, Paula; Farrell, Eimear; Pike, Brigid
Abstract:
This collection of papers was developed as part of the work undertaken by the Drug Misuse Research Division (DMRD) in the context of its work as Focal Point to the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA). The EMCDDA is a European Union (EU) institution providing information concerning drugs and drug addiction and their consequences. The EMCDDA works to improve the comparability of drug-related data in the member states, and to disseminate information and co-operate with international bodies dealing with drug-related issues. In fulfilling its role, the EMCDDA co-operates with a network of 'focal points' or national centres dealing with drug-related issues in the member states. This network is called the REITOX network (European Information Network on Drugs and Drug Addiction). The DMRD of the Health Research Board (HRB) is the designated Irish Focal Point for the REITOX network. Focal Points act as an information resource to the EMCDDA in relation t...

A consensus statement on how to conduct inclusive health research
(2019)
Garcia Iriarte, Edurne
Abstract:
Background: The active involvement of people with intellectual disabilities in research, or inclusive research, is relatively common. However, inclusive health research is less common, even though it is expected to lead to appropriate healthcare and increased quality of life. Inclusive health research can build upon lessons learned from inclusive research. Method: A total of 17 experts on inclusive (health) research without intellectual disabilities and 40 experts with intellectual disabilities collaborated in this consensus statement. The consensus statement was developed in three consecutive rounds: (1) an initial feedback round; (2) a roundtable discussion at the 2016 International Association for the Scientific Study of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities World Congress; and (3) a final feedback round. Results: This consensus statement provides researchers with guidelines, agreed upon by experts in the field, regarding attributes, potential outcomes, reporting and publis...

Action plan for health research 2009-13
(2009)
Department of Health and Children (DOHC)
Abstract:
he purpose of this Overview is to set the scene so as to assist with a fuller understanding of the Action Plan. It begins by outlining the purpose and objectives of the Action Plan. This is followed by the identification of the changes that the Action Plan will bring about over its timeframe. The Overview concludes by elaborating the structure and philosophy of the Action Plan. he Action Plan has been prepared to prioritise a programme of actions that are essential to creating a health research system which supports outstanding individuals, working in world-class facilities and conducting leading-edge research focused on the needs of patients and the public. Ultimately, a strong health research culture is vital if the health service is to offer the best standards of care to patients across a range of specialities and to provide robust evidence that these standards are being achieved on an ongoing basis. Health research – examples of real success, improvements in health and economic...

Abstract:
Intervention fidelity is crucial to facilitate accurate interpretation of research outcomes, but has been inadequately addressed within complex health behaviour change interventions. Recent research has highlighted a need for practical guidance to improve understanding and use of existing fidelity frameworks and models within complex health behaviour change intervention research. The aim of this paper is to present a protocol for a scoping review of existing intervention fidelity frameworks and models. In accordance with scoping review guidelines, the following stages will be conducted: (1) identifying the research question, (2) identifying potentially relevant studies of fidelity frameworks and models, (3) study screening and selection, (4) charting and extracting data from identified frameworks and models, (5) collating, summarising and reporting the results and (6) consultation with stakeholders. Two reviewers will independently conduct the screening and extraction stages. Ident...

Bibliometric analysis of HRB-supported publications 2000-12
(2014)
Thomson Reuters (Evidence)
Abstract:
This report was commissioned by the Health Research Board (HRB) which contracted Thomson Reuters (Evidence) to conduct a bibliometric analysis of HRB-supported publications between 2000 and 2012. HRB-supported publications were matched to the Thomson Reuters Web of Knowledge? and supplemented with data from the funding acknowledgement text, and then linked with HRB funding schemes and grant types. This report analyses trends in research output and citation impact (Section 4) using HRB-supported journal papers. These are articles, reviews and some peer-reviewed proceedings papers used in citation analyses. It analyses the performance of HRB-supported papers by HRB strategic pillar areas and funding schemes (Section 5) and Web of Science? journal categories (Section 6). It also analyses patterns of domestic and international co-authorship (Section 7) by volume.

Decoding the Genetics of Inherited Retinal Diseases in Ireland
(2019)
DOCKERY, ADRIAN
Abstract:
Title: Decoding the Genetics of Inherited Retinal Diseases in Ireland Short Description: The Target 5000 study aims to provide genetic testing for the estimated 5,000 people in Ireland who are affected by a genetic retinal condition. Currently, nearly 1000 patients in Ireland have been sequenced and approximately 80 novel candidate variants have been discovered. Purpose: While clinical trials are in progress for patients with inherited retinal degenerations (IRDs), many such trials require patients to have a known causative mutation to participate in these trials. The Target 5000 research project aims to genetically characterise the estimated 5,000 people in Ireland affected by IRDs. Approach: The IRD patient cohort used in the study has been obtained via a collaborative network of ophthalmologists whereby if an IRD is suspected, given consent, a DNA sample is taken and provided to a central laboratory for genetic analysis. The study seeks to detect previously identified, together w...

Abstract:
There is a substantial body of literature on the principles of good partnerships and the rationale for such partnerships in research capacity strengthening. This paper illustrates the long term effects of a multi-country (8 countries) global partnership for health systems research capacity development (Connecting health Research in Africa and Ireland Consortium - ChRAIC) in relation to its contribution to capacity strengthening, public advocacy and policy influence at different levels and its practical achievements in Sudan in addressing access to maternal health services.

Health Reseach Board (HRB)
Abstract:
SUMMARY The second year of operation of the Health Research Board has been characterised by a period of consolidation combined with some further rationalisation. At the beginning of the year the Board decided to engage in an execise to review its research activities and to establish research and funding priorities for the future. As part of this process a wide consultation took place with the research community and research users and the feedback received from both individuals and groups proved extremely valuable to the Board in planning its future programmes. Although the funds available to the Board remain severely limited it did prove possible to develop some new research activity through its various grant schemes. A total of 46 new high quality research projects were initiated and funding support for a further 43 on-going research projects was renewed. The support of high quality bio-medical and health research projects is the primary means by which the Board contributes to main...

Abstract:
The Health Research Board continues its strong commttment to a vigorous innovative programme of health research. Against a background of formidable funding difficulties the Board has continued to support h1gh quality studies in Basic Science. Clinical Medicine. and Denistry. Additionally. in a radical and comprehensive review of its funding strategy. the Board has launched important new programmes designed to create enhanced Irish expertise in epidemiologic and health services research. These initiatives stem directly from the wide ranging Corporate Plan for Health Research submitted to the Department of Health. a document which represents a dynamic blue-print for systematically tackling the key health problems and health services issues in Ireland. The Board is firmly of the view that enlightened State investment in this programme would pay enormous dividends both in the short and long-term.
