Mc Manus, Ross; Feighery, Conleth; Kelleher, Dermot
Abstract:
We tested 310,605 single-nucleotide polymorphisms for association in 778 celiac disease cases and 1422 controls. Outside the HLA, the most significant finding (rs13119723, P=2.0 ? 10?7, empirical genome-wide significance P=0.045) was in the KIAA1109/Tenr/IL2/IL21 linkage disequilibrium block. Association was independently confirmed in two further collections (strongest at rs6822844, 24kB 5' of IL21, meta-analysis P=1.3 ? 10?14, OR 0.63), suggesting genetic variation in this region predisposes to celiac disease.

DE SOUSA MENEZES, FABIO
Abstract:
2-Pentylpiperidine, named conmaculatin, a novel volatile alkaloid related to coniine was identified from the renowned toxic weed Conium maculatum L. (Apiaceae). The structure of conmaculatin was corroborated by synthesis (8 steps starting from cyclohexanol, overall yield 12%). Conmaculatin?s strong peripheral and central antinociceptive activity in mice was observed in a narrow dose range (10-20 mg/kg). It was found to be lethal in doses higher than 20 mg/kg.

A Theoretical Overview of Unlearning in Engineering
(2016)
MOONEY, ROBIN
Abstract:
Unlearning is the deliberate undoing or reversal of what has been previously learned. This skill has been acknowledged in business and academia as being increasingly important for engineers in a highly changeable 21st century environment; additionally, industry have recently flagged a real-world skill deficit in graduates that can be remedied using the concept of unlearning. This paper shows that modern learning theories and engineering teaching initiatives implicitly rely on unlearning to successfully influence and appropriately prepare engineering students for industry.

Abstract:
Activation of CD1d-restricted invariant NKT (iNKT) cells with the glycolipid ?-galactosylceramide (?-GalCer) confers protection against disease in murine models, however, clinical trials in humans have had limited impact. We synthesised a novel thioglycoside analogue of ?-GalCer, denoted ?-S-GalCer, and tested its efficacy for stimulating human iNKT cells in vitro. ?-S-GalCer stimulated cytokine release by iNKT cells in a CD1d-dependent manner and primed CD1d+ target cells for lysis. ?-S-GalCer-stimulated iNKT cells induced maturation of monocyte-derived dendritic cells into antigen-presenting cells that released IL-12 and small amounts of IL-10. The nature and potency of ?-S-GalCer and ?-GalCer in human iNKT cell activation were similar. However, in contrast to ?-GalCer, ?-S-GalCer did not activate murine iNKT cells in vivo. Because of its enhanced stability in biological systems, ?-S-GalCer may be superior to ?-GalCer as a parent compound for developing adjuvant therapies for huma...

Adaptive Design of a Prototype Electricity-Producing Biomass Cooking Stove
(2015)
ROBINSON, ANTHONY; O'SHAUGHNESSY, SEAMUS
Abstract:
This work is a second iteration of an adaptive design project aimed at developing an appropriate off-grid technology for small-scale electricity generation in rural Malawi, and possibly for other developing countries. Stakeholder and user feedback gathered from the initial technology demonstrator field trial has been used to inform design improvements of a re-engineered technology demonstrator which has subsequently been deployed in a different region of Malawi to assess its viability, robustness and appropriateness. The ultimate aim of the project is to develop a domestic electricity generator that can provide adequate, affordable and reliable electricity for charging low-powered electrical appliances such as mobile phones, LED lanterns and radios. The technology under development is a thermoelectric generator that is powered from the heat produced by biomass-fed cooking stoves. The re-engineered generator utilises a single thermoelectric generator (TEG) to produce up to 4 W of ele...

Abstract:
The increasing emphasis on aid effectiveness, accountability and impact measurement in international development and humanitarian work has generated a requirement for high quality internal systems for the management of programmes. To help to address this requirement, Trócaire adopted Results Based Management in the 20 countries in which it works. This paper provides an overview of Trócaire’s RBM journey, including the process of embedding the new approach in the organisation, lessons learnt from this process, the subsequent benefits that are emerging at field programme level and the challenges going forward.

Another cog in the anti-politics machine? The 'de-clawing' of development education'
(2011)
Bryan, Audrey
Abstract:
This issue of Policy & Practice: A Development Education Review is devoted to the theme of ‘Professionalisation and Deradicalisation of Development Education’ and is centrally concerned with a number of paradoxes and contradictions that characterise the field in an era of neo-liberal shaped globalisation. It addresses, in particular, the question of why the development education sector endorses, tacitly or otherwise, the very ideologies and political-economic arrangements that are responsible for producing or exacerbating conditions of poverty and injustice, while simultaneously encouraging people to take action against this poverty and injustice? It asks: What are the implications of retaining a politically detached stance on crucial policy issues that the sector is ideally positioned to respond to? Why does the sector sometimes have surprisingly little to say about key development issues and crises as they are played out in local contexts? What are the consequences for develop...

Abstract:
Abstract Ethnopharmacological relevance Couroupita guianensis Aublet, ?macacarecuia?, ?abric?-de-macaco?, ?castanha-de-macaco? and ?am?ndoa-dos-andes?, is found in tropical regions and is widely used in the treatment of tumors, pain, and inflammatory processes. Aim of the study Ethanol extract and hexane and ethyl acetate fractions were evaluated in models of inflammatory pain (formalin-induced licking) and acute inflammation (carrageenan-induced peritonitis). Materials and methods Ethanol extract, hexane and ethyl acetate fractions (10, 30 or 100 mg/kg, p.o.) and the reference drugs dexamethasone (5 mg/kg), morphine (5 mg/kg, s.c.), and acetylsalicylic acid (100 mg/kg, p.o.) were tested in formalin-induced licking response and carrageenan-induced peritonitis. Results All three doses from Couroupita guianensis fractions significantly reduced the time that the animal spent licking the formalin-injected paw in first and second phases. However, only higher doses (30 and 100 mg/kg) ...

Antinociceptive activity of Cistanche salsa stolons, growing in the Republic of Kazakhstan
(2017)
Boylan, Fabio
Abstract:
Herba Cistanche (Cistanche species) in Traditional Chinese Medicine is used for the treatment of several diseases and symptoms, to include pain. The objective of this study was to evaluate the antinociceptive effect of the hydroethanol extract of Cistanche salsa (C.A.Mey.) Beck, Orobanchaceae, stolons in animal models of pain. Chemical composition of Herba Cistanche was analyzed by HPLC-UV. Mice Swiss Webster (25?30 g, n = 6) were orally pre-treated with Herba Cistanche (10, 30 or 100 mg/kg) and evaluated in the formalin test and in the capsaicin- or glutamate-induced licking response. Kazakh Herba Cistanche is composed mainly by phenylpropanoid glycosides, from which echinacoside, acteoside and tubuloside B are the main constituents. When Herba Cistanche was administered to mice it had an effect in both phases of the formalin test (77% activity at 30 mg/kg for phase 1 and 62% activity at 100 mg/kg for phase 2) suggesting analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. Kazakh Herba Cist...

Banking supervision and external auditors: Theory and empirics

Abstract:
This paper investigates the role of external auditors in banking sector supervision from a theoretical, institutional and empirical perspective. We first present a simple principal-agent framework that highlights the importance of several institutional characteristics in determining the optimal involvement of external auditors in supervision. We then construct a new index that captures the degree of involvement of external auditors in the oversight of the banking sector in 115 countries. Consistent with our theoretical arguments, we find that countries that increase the role of central banks in supervision are also more likely to involve auditors, suggesting that the added complexity of a supervisory function is likely to benefit from the expertise of an external auditor. Having experienced a financial crisis is also associated with a higher use of auditors, particularly among central banks with an increasing role in supervision, which suggests some reputational concerns of the supe...

Battery Charging Considerations in Small Scale Electricity Generation from a Thermoelectric Module
(2014)
ROBINSON, ANTHONY; O'SHAUGHNESSY, SEAMUS
Abstract:
This project involves the development of a prototype electrical gen erator for delivering and storing small amounts of electricity. Power is generated using the thermoelectric effect. A single thermoelectric generator (TEG) is utilised to convert a small portion of the heat flowing through it to electricity. The electricit y produced is used to charge a single rechargeable 3.3 Volt lithium - iron phosphate battery. This study investigates methods of delivering maximum power to the battery for a range of temperature gradients across the thermoelectric module. The paper explore s load matching and maximum power point tracking techniques. It was found that, for the TEG tested, a SEPIC DC - DC converter was only beneficial for temperature gradients less than 100 ? C across the TEG. At a temperature gradient of 150 ? C, the effective re sistance of the battery was close to the internal resistance of the TEG. For ...

Borders and violence in Burundi: regional responses, global responsibilities
(2021)
Gaynor, Niamh
Abstract:
Situated within the volatile Great Lakes region of Africa, Burundi has suffered decades of violence, displacement and re-displacement. As violence and insecurity continues, most notably following a third term bid in 2015 by the country’s President, an estimated 400,000- 500,000 have been re-displaced, mostly across regional borders into neighbouring Tanzania, Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda. This chapter exploresthe complex root causes of this ongoing violence, together with regional and global responses to this. Highlighting the role played by international actors and institutions in setting the ground for and sustaining the violence, it argues for a globalised politics of responsibility in responding to the ensuing crisis.

CFD modelling of fixed photocatalytic inserts for a continuous flow CPC reactor for water disinfection
(2012)
GILL, LAURENCE; Misstear, David
Abstract:
The design of a suitable fixed photocatalytic support for water disinfection in a continuous flow reactor was researched. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was used to simulate the percentage of tracked particles coming into contact with the irradiated surface of different support geometries, cylindrical: conical and consecutive frusta and a spring. The number of particles striking each insert was presumed to give a good representation of the respective disinfection efficiencies of each design, as photocatalysis is effectively a surface phenomenon. It was found that a conical frustum design was more than three times as efficient as a similarly-sized conventional cylindrical insert with regard to this parameter, and arrangements of shorter frusta exhibited even more promising traits. A further regime of laboratory testing is proposed in order to determine the practical efficiency of the insert designs, which may have important applications in the solar disinfection of drinking water.

Characterising Cytokine Gene Expression Signatures in Patients with Severe Sepsis
(2013)
DOHERTY, DEREK
Abstract:
Introduction. Severe sepsis in humans may be related to an underlying profound immune suppressive state. We investigated the link between gene expression of immune regulatory cytokines and the range of illness severity in patients with infection and severe sepsis. Methods. A prospective observational study included 54 ICU patients with severe sepsis, 53 patients with infection without organ failure, and 20 healthy controls. Gene expression in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) was measured using realtime polymerase chain reaction. Results. Infection differed from health by decreased expression of the IL2, and IL23 and greater expression of IL10 and IL27. Severe sepsis differed from infection by having decreased IL7, IL23, IFN??, and TNF?? gene expression. An algorithm utilising mRNA copy number for TNF??, IFN??, IL7, IL10, and IL23 accurately distinguished sepsis from severe sepsis with a receiver operator characteristic value of 0.88. Gene expression was similar with gram-po...
