'From the Russell Library…'
(2009)
Woods, Penny
Abstract:
In 1808 the following story about a Maynooth student appeared in Watty Cox’s 'Irish Magazine and monthly asylum for neglected biography': A Hungarian, who translated some of Ovid's elegies into Greek verse, travelled through these countries in 1802. He had been in both the English universities, in Edinburgh, and at the College in Dublin [TCD]; at each of which places he conversed with the cleverest men in the Greek and Roman tongues. After spending some time in Dublin College, curiosity led him to Maynooth. It was during the summer recess, and most of the professors were from home. He met a lad about twenty years of age, with whom he entered into conversation. He asked several questions concerning the internal economy of the college; and, among the rest, if there was a professor of Greek on the establishment. The young lad, indignant at the affront offered his Alma Mater, spoke to him in that language with the greatest fluency. The Hungarian was struck with wonder, a...

A cost-effectiveness study of ownership versus access
(1997)
Payne, Valerie J.; Burke, Mary A.
Abstract:
This paper describes a method which was used to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of three different ways of supplying periodical articles in an academic library. The methods considered were: subscribing to a periodical title (ownership); individual article supply provided by two electronic document delivery services, ArticlesFirst of OCLC FirstSearch and UnCover; and traditional article supply through the British Library Document Supply Centre. The operational costs of the alternatives are obtained by taking a management accounting approach and are examined in relation to the provision of the services within the library of St. Patrick's College, Maynooth, Ireland. The cost-per-use of owning a periodical title is calculated based on the operational costs of the Periodicals Department of the library, its subscription price and a lifetime use determined by examination of the current requests for articles made through the library's Inter-Library Loans Department. The cost-p...

A quantitative analysis of biographical data from Ainm, the Irish-language Biographical Database
(2019)
Bhreathnach, Úna; Burke, Cathal; Mag Fhinn, Jeaic; Ó Cleircín, Gearóid; Ó Raghallaigh, Brian
Abstract:
This paper looks at some trends identifiable in the biographical data contained in the Ainm collection of Irish-language related biographies. The data structure is described and the reasons for its particular structure are outlined. The structured data is then analysed to identify some notable patterns and significant gaps in the Ainm biographical collection. These features and omissions are discussed in the context of the creation of both the original print biographical dictionary (the Beathaisnéis series) and the more recent digital version (www.ainm.ie).

A user-oriented study of metadata in focal.ie
(2014)
de Barra-Cusack, Fionnuala
Abstract:
Subject-field classification systems are implemented in every major termbank to facilitate the internal management of terminographic work, and this study begins with an account of how the DANTERM subject-field classification system was selected to meet such needs in the bilingual Irish-English termbank focal.ie. Little is known, however, about how subject-field labels and other metadata are actually used by users of termbanks. The current study thus also sets out to investigate users’ beliefs and opinions about how the presentation of metadata, and especially subject-field labels, affects user behaviour and success in the context of English-Irish translation, including use of the bilingual Irish-English termbank focal.ie. Users’ opinions and beliefs are investigated in a series of five focus groups involving nineteen users of focal.ie. Actual use of the termbank is subsequently observed in a contextual inquiry, involving observation of and interviews with nine professional translato...

A writing support programme for Irish academic librarians
(2009)
Fallon, Helen
Abstract:
Abstract Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore the benefits of a writing support programme in developing the skills and motivation of librarians to write for academic publication. Design/methodology/approach – A brief review of the literature is presented. The model developed and implemented by this author is outlined. Findings from a survey of participants are discussed. Research limitations/implications – The formal programme commenced in 2007. The publication process takes time, particularly in the case of peer-reviewed journals. This is exploratory work. It will take time to build up a body of information and a community of librarians writing for publication. Initial evidence indicates there is significant value to the programme. Practical implications – The model is transferable and could help in building skills and confidence in academic writing. In addition academic writing could serve as a bridge between lecturing and library staff, addressing issues of common co...

Ancient artefacts at Maynooth University
(2015)
McCormack, Barbara
Abstract:
The Russell Library, Maynooth University, recently exhibited some of the oldest material from the collections of St. Patrick’s College, Maynooth – a series of four thousand year old Babylonian clay tablets and stamp seals from ancient Mesopotamia. The collection of sixty-five cuneiform tablets in the Sumerian language and a pre-writing stamp seal were amassed by an Irish army chaplain during the First World War. The material dates from c. 3,500-1,900 BC and includes both cuneiform tablets and cones bearing royal inscriptions from the early Babylonian period, as well as administrative and economic accounts from the Ur III period (c. 2100-2000 BC).

And So It Is Written: Supporting Librarians on the Path to Publication
(2010)
Fallon, Helen
Abstract:
This article describes a program developed to support Irish academic librarians writing for publication. While writing support programs for faculty are well established, this is the first formal writing program specifically for librarians in Ireland or the United King-dom. The program comprises three elements: a one-day workshop, an optional peer-feedback day, and an academic writing blog. The one-day workshop focuses on the craft of writing, identifying appropriate publishing outlets, knowing audience and pur-pose, and developing the confidence to “put work out there.” Participants are encour-aged to attend a peer-feedback day to give and receive feedback on their work. The value of looking outside the literature of librarianship for publishing opportunities and for collaboration with colleagues is stressed. The benefits of writing support programs are identified and some American models are described. Guidelines for establishing writing support programs are offered.

Can information literacy motivate students to become global citizens?
(2007)
Antonesa, Mary
Abstract:
Can information literacy (IL) help students to become global citizens? Contemporary citizenship encompasses a wide range of political, civil, social and cultural rights and responsibilities. Formal education is becoming more aware of this and of the need to equip students with the skills they need to exercise their rights and responsibilities in their workplace and beyond. This article will briefly reflect on the nature of these concepts and on their place in higher education. Higher education institutions are no longer producing 'graduates' and are instead expected to produce lifelong learning global citizens. Learning is not complete on graduation. Rather it is hoped and expected that learning is a lifelong practice related not only to a career but also to the wider experiences of life and living.
