Depressive symptoms among older adults: The impact of early and later life circumstances and marital status
(2013)
TIMONEN, VIRPI
Abstract:
Objective: This article contributes to the literature on depression and the life course by examining the impact of both early and later life circumstances on depressive symptoms among men and women aged 65 and over in Ireland. Method: Data are from the first wave of The Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (TILDA), a nationally representative sample of 8,504 community-dwelling adults aged 50 years and older. 3,507 respondents aged 65 years and over were included in the analysis. Multinomial logistic regression was used to examine the childhood and early adult life circumstances associated with marital status. A series of nested models were estimated to evaluate which childhood and adulthood circumstances are associated with depressive symptoms. Models were estimated separately for men and women. Results: Ill health in childhood and in later life has a strong and direct effect on depression in later life for both men and women. Other early stressors are mediated by later circumstance...

Expatriates' identity salience, work stressors, and work–nonwork conflict: moderating role of gender and marital status
(2019)
Vijayakumar, Pooja B.; Cunningham, Christopher J.L.
Abstract:
Drawing from identity theory, we proposed individuals with high work salience experienced high work stressors (interpersonal conflict, workhours, and workload), resulting in positive work‐nonwork conflict (WNWC), and individuals with high nonwork salience experienced lower work stressors, resulting in negative WNWC. Furthermore, we tested for the moderating role of gender and marital status in the relationship. The sample for this study consisted of 415 Indian expatriates working in the U.S. information technology (IT) industry. Findings supported the proposed model where work stressors completely conditioned the relationship between work/nonwork salience and WNWC. Work‐salient men worked longer hours compared to work‐salient women and were more prone to WNWC. In married individuals (in both work‐ and nonwork‐salient individuals), increased workload was positively associated with WNWC and long working hours were negatively associated with WNWC. These findings further suggested nonma...

Abstract:

BACKGROUND: To understand why treatment referral rates for ESRF are lower in Ireland than in other European countries, an investigation of factors influencing general practitioner referral of patients developing ESRF was conducted.

METHOD: Randomly selected general practitioners (N = 51) were interviewed using 32 standardised written patient scenarios to elicit referral strategies. Main outcome measures: General practitioner referral levels and thresholds for patients developing end-stage renal disease; referral routes (nephrologist vs other physicians); influence of patient age, marital status and co-morbidity on referral.

RESULTS: Referral levels varied widely with the full range of cases (0-32; median = 15) referred by different doctors after consideration of first laboratory results. Less ...

Overview of the extent of discrimination in Ireland
(2013)
Cantillon, Sara; Vasquez del Aguila, Ernesto
Abstract:
Irish legislation prohibits discrimination in employment and service provision under nine grounds: age, disability, family status, gender, marital status, race/ethnic group/nationality, religious belief, sexual orientation, and membership of the Traveller community. This paper shows that despite the extensive equality legislative framework and “optimistic” perceptions of the general population about tolerance and openness, vulnerable populations continue to experience discrimination in their everyday lives. The unprecedented wave of immigration from different cultural and racial backgrounds during the economic boom have changed the face of Ireland. The term “diversity” has become part of the discourse of Government and private institutions as well as in the popular media in Irish society. This paper analyses the situation of people who are covered by the nine grounds of non-discrimination and provides an important context to understanding discrimination, equality and diversity in co...

Singular Identities Managing Stigma, Resisting Voices
(2012)
Byrne, Anne
Abstract:
This paper argues that single women are stigmatised in contemporary Irish society and that this is particularly evident in people's everyday interactions with single women. Stigmatising interactions are apparent in relation to singleness itself, marital status, the bearing of children and sexuality, indicating the pervasiveness of heterosexual, familistic ideologies in Irish society. The paper describes a set of stigma management strategies deployed by women in response to single stigma. Within these responses, emerging forms of resistance to dominant ideologies of womanhood are evident in women's explanations of 'why I am single'.
