The path to the Aras: (the role of political communications in the election of Mary McAleese as the eighth President of Ireland)
(2001)
Collins, Suzanne
Abstract:
This thesis will attempt to explore aspects of political communications in Ireland. The political communications strategy of Fianna Fail will be focused upon, through an examination of the electoral campaign of Mary McAleese in her bid, in 1997, to become the eighth President of Ireland. The various components of the election campaign will be assessed and appraised as they came together to result in a victory for Fianna Fail. McAleese’s campaign will be examined in two phases. Firstly, her successful campaign to gain a nomination from Fianna Fail, when she was not a member of the party, and secondly her campaign to convince the electorate to vote for her. In an examination of both phases of the campaign McAleese’s target audience, core message and the role of the Fianna Fail party will be discussed. The second phase of McAleese’s campaign will examine her use of non-mediated and mediated political communication and the role of political communication in her success.

The political economy of Irish television broadcasting policy 1997 - 2007
(2009)
Murphy, Kenneth W.
Abstract:
This dissertation is an analysis of the political economy of the Republic of Ireland's television broadcasting policy in the period between 1997 and 2007. It is primarily concerned with Irish policy approaches to the introduction of digital terrestrial television (DTT) and the restructuring of public service broadcasting (PSB). Whereas policy addressing these two policy areas had been articulated in the late 1980s, it was not until the period under review that significant policy endeavours took place. The research is primarily concerned with identifying the articulation of state/market relations as manifested in policy making and assessing the relative effectiveness/success of such policy changes relative to specific policy aims in communications and media and the larger strategies and activities of the Irish state.

The Politics of Pilgrimage Through the Prism of Mass Media

The Politics of Pilgrimage Through the Prism of Mass Media
(2016)
Das, Alokparna
Abstract:
Pilgrimage involves the movement of people either as individuals or as groups in search of what can be described as the sacred. Since pilgrimage is an integral part of Indian culture and has significant participation, pilgrimage sites and centres are being used by political and corporate organisations to communicate specific messages. The political relevance of religion in our contemporary world cannot be disputed, particularly in the context of a growing consumerist culture and the divisive tactics of most political organisations. In such a scenario, pilgrimage traditions and centres are periodically taken over by political groups. As a particular pilgrimage tradition evolves, sacred sites become formalised into organised socio-political systems with economic overtones. Pilgrimage sites and traditions, both old and new, are promoted through various tools of the mass media, including newspaper articles, television and radio programmes, cinema, tourism literature or advertising campa...

The roles of “old” and “new” media tools and technologies in the facilitation of violent extremism and terrorism
(2020)
Scrivens, Ryan; Conway, Maura
Abstract:
This chapter describes and discusses the roles of media tools and technologies in the facilitation of violent extremism and terrorism. Rather than focusing on how media report on terrorism, we investigate how extremist and terrorist groups and movements themselves have exploited various “traditional” and “new” media tools, from print to digital, outlining the significance that they have had on extremists’ ability to mark territory, intimidate some audiences, connect with other (sympathetic) audiences, radicalize, and even recruit. Underlined is that violent extremists and terrorists of all stripes have, over time, used every means at their disposal to forward their communicative goals. Also worth noting is that ‘old’ media tools are not extinct and while ‘new’ media play a prominent role in contemporary violent extremism and terrorism, ‘old’ tools—everything from murals to magazines—continue to be utilized in tandem with the former.

The state and cultural policy in Ireland: the case of the Irish audiovisual sector

The state and cultural policy in Ireland: the case of the Irish audiovisual sector
(1991)
Keenaghan, Celia
Abstract:
This thesis examines the relationship between the Irish state and the Irish audiovisual sector in an attempt to examine where the future of Irish cultural policy lies. Chapter one examines the nation as an "imagined community" and the importance of the media in that imagining. It establishes how important the media were to developing the cultural basis of the Irish nation-state. It indicates that with increasing internationalism and consumerism, the importance of the cultural field is becoming more unclear and how a redefinition of the public sphere is occurring in increasingly consumerist terms. Chapter two presents a history of broadcasting and film in Ireland, paying particular attention to concepts of nation-state, consumer-citizen and the changing definitions of public service. Chapter three extends this into the present day and shows how policy in the area of film and television is more and more being based on commercial rather than cultural criteria. Chapter four ...

The Tribune’s turbulent times
(2018)
Brennan, Pat; Trench, Brian
Abstract:
The Sunday Tribune’s 30-year-story starts with Hibernia’s demise, as an attempt to continue by other means that magazine’s dissenting journalism. Set up by an unlikely partnership of John Mulcahy, proprietor-editor of Hibernia, and Hugh McLaughlin, commercial magazine publisher and Sunday World co-founder, the Sunday Tribune went through several distinct phases in its three decades: 1980- 82, under the control of McLaughlin, with various associates; 1983-94, under the editorship and partial control of Vincent Browne, with changing investment partners, finally Independent Newspapers; 1994-2011, under the effective control of Independent Newspapers, with a succession of four editors. This chapter concentrates on the first two phases, from the founding years through Vincent Browne’s editorship. In these 13 years, the Tribune sought to maintain a structure and perspective that was independent and distinct within the mass-market media of the time. We review several key features of the Su...

The wire and the world: narrative and metanarrative

The wire and the world: narrative and metanarrative
(2009)
Sheehan, Helena; Sweeney, Sheamus
Abstract:
Rarely, if ever, has a television drama constructed a narrative with such a strong thrust to metanarrative. Its intricate and interwoven storylines dramatise the dialectical interaction of individual aspirations and institutional dynamics. These build into a story of a city, not only the story of Baltimore in its particularity, but with a metaphoric drive toward the story of Everycity. Every character and storyline pulses with symbolic resonance radiating out to a characterisation of the nature of contemporary capitalism. While the text itself does not name the system, the metatext does so with extraordinary clarity and force. David Simon, the primary voice of this collective creation, has engaged in a powerfully polemical discourse articulating the world view underlying the drama. This paper will explore that world view. It will examine how specific plots open into an analysis of the social-political-economic system shaping it all. It will moreover argue that The Wire has demonstr...

Three Ireland, two teams, one nation: an exploration of sport sponsorship and digital cultural nationalism
(2019)
Kearns, Colm
Abstract:
This PhD project focuses on the intersection of sport, advertising and national identity. Specifically, it examines the period in which telecommunications brand, Three, were the primary sponsors of both major international sports teams in Ireland. Through exploring sponsorship campaigns Three commissioned for the Republic of Ireland international football (soccer) team and the Ireland international rugby union team, this project will expound on both the contextually specific nuances and wider international significance of the contemporary commercial leverage of the sport-nation nexus. Thus, it incorporates a variety of perspectives on Irish cultural studies and sports studies in order to shed light on the factors which shaped the production and reception of each campaign. In addition, the cultural and commercial significance of both campaigns are placed within a wider international context with a view to illustrating the distinct potential of sport as a vehicle for commercial expres...

To the Crucible: An Irish engagement with the Greek crisis and the Greek left
(2013)
Sheehan, Helena
Abstract:
A monumental drama is playing out before our eyes. It is a true Greek tragedy. The plot: A society is being pushed to its limits. The denouement is not yet determined, but survival is at stake and prospects are precarious. Greece is at the sharp end of a radical and risky experiment in how far accumulation by dispossession can go, how much expropriation can be endured, how far the state can be subordinated to the market. It is a global narrative, but the story is a few episodes ahead here. Greece is the crucible. It is a caldron where concentrated forces are colliding in a process that will bring forth either a reconfiguration of capitalism or the dawn of its demise.

Underrepresenting reality? Media coverage of women in politics and sport

Abstract:
Objective. How do surges in female representation in public life affect media coverage? Can the media underrepresent the reality of women’s progress? If so, is the source of underrepresentation the media itself or the selectorates that brief the media? Methods. Using automatic content analysis, we study two remarkable step changes in women’s role in public life in Ireland: the 2016 elections and 2012 Olympics. Results. The increase in female participation was associated with a new and substantial gender gap in coverage, which we attribute to the media, not selectorates. Conclusion. We cannot assume that media coverage will increase proportionally as women advance in public life. The re-emergence of bias when female representation jumps may also exist outside the media in any context where there are large numbers of decisions about whether to favour males or females.

Voice of the people? Objectives versus outcomes for community radio in Ireland
(2012)
O'Brien, Anne; Gaynor, Niamh
Abstract:
Research has neglected to address the question of whether practitioners and the community groups served by community radio see it as a conduit of community empowerment and social change. This article explores this question through in-depth analysis of four community radio stations in Ireland. The central finding is that while community stations subscribe to most of the ideals of community radio, practitioners do not generally see the stations as sites of social and political empowerment. Moreover, this outcome is not recognised as a benefit by the communities served by the stations. This is the case because of the policy framework, cultural traditions and training programmes central to community radio in Ireland, the weakness of linkages between stations and community groups and the failure of the latter to understand the unique remit of community radio.

What can a community radio contribute to health promotion in response to a health crisis/the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Africa?
(2016)
Ziba, Muyanga Innocent
Abstract:
This thesis argues that a community radio station can have a complementary role in encouraging people to go for health services in a community that is plagued by a health crisis. There is evidence that the Mzimba Radio Station has managed to encourage people to go for voluntary counseling and testing, condom use, antenatal clinics, among others, because of the utilization of the journalism of attachment. A total of 600 people were interviewed from five different constituencies in the district to gauge the extent at which they use the health services. The interviews with people show that the Mzimba community radio has contributed to the increase in the number of people attending the health services. Qualitative methods such as focus group discussions, interviews and questionnaires were used to get this information from people. In these interviews, it was revealed that people use the two flow model of communication in addition to the traditional one flow model of communication. Of muc...

What’s love got to do with it? Framing ‘JihadJane’ in the US press
(2012)
Conway, Maura; McInerney, Lisa
Abstract:
The purpose of this article is to compare and contrast the US press coverage accorded to female terrorist plotter, Colleen LaRose, with that of two male terrorist plotters in order to test whether assertions in the academic literature regarding media treatment of women terrorists stand up to empirical scrutiny. The authors employed TextSTAT software to generate frequency counts of all words contained in 150 newspaper reports on their three subjects and then slotted relevant terms into categories fitting the commonest female terrorist frames, as identified by Nacos’s article in Studies in Conflict and Terrorism (2005). The authors’ findings confirm that women involved in terrorism receive significantly more press coverage and are framed vastly differently in the US press than their male counterparts.

When the Old World Unraveled

Sheehan, Helena
Abstract:
What made 1968 such an iconic year? What forces were in motion to erupt in the dramatic events of that year? What was it like to live through those times? What were the consequences of those events? What conclusions can we draw now about the meaning of those events? What reverberations can we still feel 50 years later? Helena Sheehan, active in 1968 and still going, addresses these questions.
