(2005)
Islam, Mollah Shahidul
Abstract:
This study presents the results of a research programme carried out on small and medium sized enterprises (SME) of manufacturing industrial capital machinery in Bangladesh. The study is intended to establish the market potential of industrial capital machinery (ICM), barriers to growth and government policy support issues towards the development of ICM manufacturing SMEs. This research involved the study of manufacturing industries, case studies on the manufacture of capital machinery and designing a postal survey questionnaire which was mailed to industries, government departments and raw material suppliers in Bangladesh. The questionnaire was designed with an aim to collect, information on opportunities, barriers to manufacturing, strategy of procurement and sales of ICM, use of locally available industrial indigenous resources, strength of AMT, size and performance of the SMEs and the impact of government policy on the growth of ICM manufacturing SMEs. Based on the result of th...

Determinants of pharmaceutical innovation: the role of technological opportunities revisited
(2017)
Rake, Bastian
Abstract:
Recent empirical contributions emphasize the importance of (potential) market size for the development of new pharmaceuticals. At the same time, many scholars point out the importance of scientific advances for the industry’s R&D activities. Against this background I analyze the relationship between (potential) market size, technological opportunities, and the number of new pharmaceuticals in the United States. Technological opportunities are operationalized as growth rates of the relevant knowledge stock, as proposed by Andersen (Struct Chang Econ Dyn 9(1):5–34 1998, J Evol Econ 9(4):487–526 1999). I analyze a unique dataset by using an “entry stock” Poisson quasi-maximum likelihood estimator. The results reveal a rather robust and significantly positive response of the number of new pharmaceuticals, i.e., new molecular entities or new drug approvals, to market size and technological opportunities.

This work applies established analytical techniques of physical sciences to Irish brick in order to gather evidence of ceramic technologies, provenance and sources of raw materials. Petrographic microscopy, X-ray diffractometry and scanning electron microscopy with an energy dispersive X-ray diffraction attachment were used to study the brick of Rathfarham Castle, Dublin, built c.1618, where clay brick was introduced in 1771. Local clay was fired in the laboratory and analysed in a similar manner. The petrography of the pointing mortar was studied in order to gather evidence of ceramic provenance. This paper concludes that the brick was hand- moulded with a silica-based, predominantly non-calcareous clay of glacial origin gathered locally, including fluxes and a high percentage of non-plastic material. The mineralogy and petrography of the brick together with the presence of pebbles and a coarse-m...

Engineering automated systems for pharmaceutical manufacturing: quality, regulations and business performance
(2006)
Meagher, Diarmuid P.
Abstract:
The pharmaceutical sector is very heavily regulated Drug safety regulations form one of the pillars of this regulation. The manufacture of pharmaceuticals is carried out in an environment of onerous regulatory requirements, often from several national and international regulatory bodies. The quality systems operated by drug manufacturers and their regulatory practices have an important impact on product quality. The quality and regulatory requirements apply not only to handling of the medicinal products, but also to the physical and electronic systems used in the manufacture of those products, and extend to automated systems used to support quality assurance operations. Design, development, building and support of such systems are ultimately the responsibility of the drug manufacturer. The quality and regulatory requirements for automated systems are passed down the supply chain to suppliers. In the last two decades of the 20th century there has been a proliferation in the use of co...

Abstract:
This paper traces the development of a programme of Marshall Plan technical assistance to Irish industrial development. The programme emerged following criticism that US aid policy was downgrading Irish industrial development through an excessive emphasis on agriculture. In 1950 and 1951 the US Economic Cooperation Administration established a relationship with the Department of Industry and Commerce and the newly established Industrial Development Authority through a programme of proposed technical assistance projects. This programme covered the country’s untapped industrial potential, statesponsored companies and companies in the private sector. In relation to the private sector, the programme sought to tackle the issue of inefficiencies in the industries established behind high tariff walls since the early 1930s mainly by bringing US industrial consultants to Ireland. Just as an ambitious and elaborate Irish industrial TA programme was about to get under way, it was wrecked by th...

Modelling and simulation of a Puma 560 manipulator for control system appraisal
(1988)
Anderson, George P.
Abstract:
The PUMA 560 Industrial Manipulator is presently controlled using a gain-scheduled PID control strategy. The implementation of adaptive control techniques can improve manipulator performance, [20]. One of the principal drawbacks with adaptive control is the difficulty in guaranteeing robustness over the complete operating range. This is particularly important when the plant is expensive and potentially self-damaging. An accurate, tuned, dynamic model, which includes the system’s main dynamics is a great asset to the control engineer. A complete model for the Puma 560 has not previously been developed. The research presented in this thesis derives a tuned and fully tested third order dynamic model for the first three links of the PUMA 560. A mathematical method of specifying the manipulator link structures and inter-relationships is discussed. By treating the manipulator as a connected chain of rigid bodies the Euler-Lagrange method is used to formulate second order dynamic equation...

Quality control for automatic inspection of threaded components
(1991)
Basmage, Osama Mohammed
Abstract:
Manual inspection and testing of threaded components, specially in high volume manufacturing processes are time consuming and costly. There are three different types of error which may occur within the tolerance zone specified by the metric thread ISO system, which are as follows: (i) Error of the flank angle. (ii) Error of pitch over the length of fitting. (iii) Error of effective diameter. Additionally, material build-up which blocks the threaded zone may also render the component to be rejected. These error may occur due to the manufacturing process itself, either by cutting or rolling, such as tool and die wear, materials defects , etc. This thesis describe the design and development of an automatic inspection system for threaded components. The system consists of a mechanical sensor, which is interfaced to a PC and the operational tracing cycle of the system is controlled to carry out the following operations. (1)- Belix path inspection. (2)- thread form inspection. The re...

Regional and structural analysis of the manufacturing industry in Turkey
(2017)
Gezici, Ferhan; Yazgi Walsh, Burçin; Metin Kacar, Sinem
Abstract:
The geography of the manufacturing industry has been changing due to technological development, flexible production and reducing transportation costs regarding the new specialization and distribution process in the world. While manufacturing production has been moving from developed countries to the relatively less developed ones, which have become the emerging economies over the last two decades, the concentration of these activities within the countries has always received the attention of researchers. On the other hand, not only the geographical shift but also structural shifts have increasingly been an important phenomenon of the twenty-first century. It is known that the level of technology and innovation makes a significant contribution to regional economic development. Determinants of manufacturing agglomerations have created a wide literature based on different empirical studies. Moreover the structural changes of industry need to be investigated regarding the spatial agglom...

Repointing Mortars for Conservation of a Historic Stone Building in Trinity College, Dublin
(1993)

Abstract:
With atmospheric pollution causing building stone to decay at accelerated rates, conservation of historic stone monuments is becoming an increasingly important issue. Mortar joints have a marked effect on how moisture moves in a wall and, hence, on how the wall weathers. Not only does mortar bind stones together, but also a good mortar will prevent the ingress of moisture (and pollutants), enable the buildings to dry out, accommodate movement and will not act as a source of harmful chemicals capable of attacking the surrounding stone. Thus, poor mortar can have deleterious effects on the stonework. This paper, which is the result of research sponsored by the Commission of European Communities, considers a number of commonly used, and some more rarely used, pointing mortars, and assesses them with a view to using the most successful for repointing a historic stone building in Trinity College, Dublin.

Sectoral differences in determinants of export intensity
(2016)
Mac an Bhaird, Ciarán; Curran, Declan
Abstract:
This study investigates firm characteristic determinants of export intensity in small firms. The originality of our approach is a comparative analysis of export intensity between firms in the computer software and manufacturing sectors, using a quasi-maximum likelihood estimation to test for the correct specification of the conditional mean model. Results indicate that larger, younger firms have greater export intensity in the computer software sector than in manufacturing. Research and development expenditure is equally important for export intensity in both sectors, but patent income is not significant. Sourcing managerial advice and expertise from the national development agency is important for firms in the manufacturing industry, but not for computer software firms. It is therefore important for export promotion organisations to publicise supports, as a few small firms are aware of their availability. Our findings are especially valuable for policy makers concerned with low lev...

The drivers of transnational subsidiary evolution: the upgrading of process R&D in the Irish pharmaceutical industry (NIRSA) Working Paper Series. No. 38
(2008)
Van Egeraat, Chris; Breathnach, Proinnsias
Abstract:
This paper contributes to the theory of subsidiary evolution in large corporations through an examination of the driving forces behind recent upgrading of process R&D activities in the Irish pharmaceutical industry. It is based on a survey of 80 pharmaceutical establishments in Ireland and a follow-up set of 52 semi-structured, face-to-face interviews with senior staff at 12 of the surveyed establishments carried out in 2006. We show that vigorous growth is occurring in the incidence of process R&D activity among manufacturing subsidiaries of transnational pharmaceutical firms located in Ireland. The paper supports the utility of a multi-level systems perspective on subsidiary evolution as proposed by Tavares (2001). The external environment, internal (corporate) environment and subsidiary drivers are seen to drive upgrading in a systemic way, whereby various drivers mutually interact, co-evolve and operate through each other. In further support of Tavares, the primary drive...

The Eastward Shift of Computer Hardware Production: How Ireland Adjusted (NIRSA) Working Paper Series. No.27

Abstract:
Computer and component assembly operations tend to service each of the triad markets (the Americas, Asia and EMEA – Europe, the Middle East and Africa) from locations within each triad. Over the course of the 1990s, assembly shifted to lower-cost locations within each triad region. Within the Americas, operations shifted from the US and Canada to Mexico. In Asia they shifted from Japan to Singapore and in Europe from the richer core countries to the Western EU periphery of Ireland and Scotland. Two thirds of all computers sold in Europe in the 1990s were assembled in either Ireland or Scotland. More recently the sector has been shifting again. In Asia the shift has been from Singapore to lower-cost economies such as Thailand, Malaysia and the Philippines. In Europe the shift has been from Scotland and Ireland to Central and Eastern Europe. Electronics component production, meanwhile, has also been shifting eastwards – primarily to Asia. The purpose of the present paper is to chart h...

The Manufacturing Sector.
(2007)
Van Egeraat, Chris; Breathnach, Proinnsias
Abstract:
Manufacturing industry is a crucial ingredient in national economic development. This is because of the value which is added to natural resources and intermediate products through industrial processing. Where this value is retained in an economy, its circulation can sustain many more jobs than are created directly in manufacturing itself. Even in so-called 'post-industrial economies', rising industrial output continues to be a key source of wealth creation despite rapidly contracting employment in manufacturing industry per se. The extraordinarily high rate of economic growth which Ireland experienced in the 1990s was largely driven by rapid expansion of its manufacturing sector, arising principally from a surge of inward investment by transnational firms which began around 1993. This chapter outlines the historical background to this recent phase of strong industrial growth, before examining in some depth the key dimensions of this crucial feature of the so-called 'C...

The performance of Irish aggregates in the 'ultra-accelerated test' for alkali-aggregate reactivity with particular reference to chert content
(2010)
McNally, Ciaran; Richardson, Mark G.
Abstract:
Presented at the 5th Canmet/ACI International Conference on Durability of Concrete, Barcelona, Spain, June, 2000
Irish aggregates have a satisfactory history of service regarding alkali-aggregate reaction despite containing significant amounts of chert and use for a period in conjunction with cements of high alkali level. An investigation was conducted of the performance in the draft RILEM ‘ultra-accelerated mortar-bar test’ of 23 individual aggregates and 14 combinations found in Irish practice. An X-ray diffraction study was also carried out. Definitive expansion limits have yet to be finalised but a value of 0.15% after 14 days immersion has been suggested as the innocuous/deleterious threshold and 0.25% expansion is suggested as the lower limit for reactive aggregates. Despite their satisfactory history of use, almost half of the aggregates tested individually and one third of the combinations exceeded the innocuous/deleterious threshold value. However, the lower limit for...

The Short-Term Effects of Mortars on Salt Movement in Stone
(1997)
Perry, Simon H; Duffy, Aidan
Abstract:
Salt-induced decay processes are one of the most important reasons for the decay of many stone buildings and monuments. This paper investigates the role played by masonry mortars in the movement of salts within Baumberger sandstone and Portland limestone. The methodology used involved the monitoring of stone units containing mortar joints which were exposed to a city-centre environment. Rain-water run-off was collected from the stone/mortar units during the exposure period; the units were subsequently destructively analysed. The methods of run-off and destructive sample analysis used included ion chromatography and atomic absorption spectrophotometry; stone and mortar samples were also analysed petrographically. Mortars were found to act as sinks of environmentally derived ions and as sources of mortar-derived ions in well washed surface environments. Mortar enrichment by sulphate (SO~-), sodium (Na2 +) and chloride (CI-) ions, which may lead to salt damage of stone around joints, w...

Theoretical solutions for strength-scaled unreinforced masonry for scaled soil-structure experimentation
(2011)
Laefer, Debra F.; Erkal, Aykut; Cording, Edward J.; Long, James H.; Truong-Hong, Linh
Abstract:
Reduced-scale masonry testing offers advantages of lower costs and shorter schedules compared to full-scale testing, but achieving results reflective of full-scale behavior requires development and fulfilment of appropriate scaling relationships. In many model-scale experiments, geometric scaling occurs but kinematic and/or dynamic similitude is not fully satisfied. This paper describes the theoretical basis and evolution of the equations necessary to achieve kinematic similitude for soil-structure testing at one-gravity for unreinforced masonry. Critical considerations relate to preventing the soil from being overloaded. By adopting a standard linear relationship of increased soil stiffness with depth, the controlling principle becomes the application of restricted, scaled loads throughout the entirety of the structure-soil system. As such, material strength and stiffness must be scaled accordingly to respond appropriately under the reduced stress. An example is provided for an adj...
