A Case Study Investigation on Purchasing Green Transport and Logistics Services
(2012)
Evangelista, Pietro; Huge-Brodin, Maria; Isaksson, Karin; Sweeney, Edward
Abstract:

In the context of green supply chain management, green purchasing has received increased attention over the past decade and the strategic importance of introducing green aspects into purchasing practices has been recognised. Despite this growing importance, little has been written in relation to purchasing green transport and logistics services. Considering the strong environmental impact associated with transport and logistics activities, much remains to be learned concerning buyer’s practices when sourcing more sustainable services from third party logistics companies (3PLs). The aim of this paper is to explore practices of buying green transport and logistics services in three different European countries (Italy, Ireland and Sweden) using a multiple case study research approach. The paper analyses how general environmental company ambitions and environmental purchasing practices are reflected when green transport and logistics services are purchased. The results of the p...

A Comparison of Time-domain Time-scale Modification Algorithms
(2006)
Dorran, David; Lawlor, Robert; Coyle, Eugene
Abstract:

Time-domain appraoches to time-scale modification are popular due to their ability to produce high quality results at a relatively low computational cost. Within the category of time-domain implementations quite a number of alternatives exist, each with their own computational requirements and associated output quality. This paper provides a computational and objective output quality assessment of a number of popular time-domain time-scaling implmentations; thus providing a means for developers to identify a suitable algorithm for their application of interest. In addition, the issues that should be considered in developing time-domain algorithms are outlines, purely in the context of a waveform editing procedure.

Abstract:

After a proliferation of logistics e-Marketplaces during the dot.com boom of 1998-2000, there has been a high rate of failure and survivals are developing much more slowly than expected. This is the case of aviation industry where a large number of B2B e-Marketplaces emerged according to the focus of aviation companies’ strategies on electronic B2B in the late 1990s. However, the current use of e-Marketplaces in the industry is low and many of them have ceased trading. The traditional e-Marketplaces model have been characterised by poor quality of portals and the lack of technical standards. Such an approach is unsustainable in today’s competitive scenario. Improvements in websites quality attributes may strongly contribute to simplify the website functionalities by users and speed-up communication with all supply chain parties. In such context, it appears of critical importance to develop models for the evaluation of e-Marketplaces web sites. This paper, afte...

All-fibre Temperature Sensor Based on Macro-bend Singlemode Fibre Loop
(2008)
Rajan, Ginu; Semenova, Yuliya; Farrell, Gerald
Abstract:

An all-fibre temperature sensor is proposed based on a macro-bend singlemode fibre loop using a ratiometric power measurement scheme. The sensor has a linear characteristic with temperature at a fixed wavelength and bend radius. A direct linear relationship between the bend loss of the singlemode fibre and temperature is reported for the first time. By measuring the change in bend loss of the system a change in temperature can be measured assuming the system is calibrated. The proposed sensor has a higher temperature resolution than other conventional fibre-optic sensors and also benefits from simplicity.

An Efficient Audio Time-scale Modification Algorithm for use in a Subband Implementation
(2003)
Dorran, David; Lawlor, Robert
Abstract:

The Paola algorithm, is an efficient algorithm for the time scale modification of speech. It uses a simple peak alignment technique to synchronise synthesis frames and takes waveform properties and the desired time-scale factor into account to determine optimum alogrithm parameters. However, PAOLA has difficulties with certain waveform types and can result in poor synchronisation for subband implementations. SOLA is a less efficient algorithm but resolves the issues associated with PAOLA's implementation. The authors present an algorithm that is a combination of the two approaches that proves to be an efficient and effective algorithm for a subband implementation.

An Efficient Phasiness Reduction Technique for Moderate Audio Time-scale Modification
(2004)
Dorran, David; Coyle, Eugene; Lawlor, Robert
Abstract:

Phase vocoder approaches to time-scale modification of audio introduce a reverberant/phasy artifact into the time-scaled output due to a loss in phase coherence between short-time Fourier transform (STFT) bins. Recent improvements to the phase vocoder have reduced the presence of this artifact, however, it remains a problem. A method of time-scaling is presented that results in a further reduction in phasiness, for moderate time-scale factors by taking advantage of some flexibility that exists in the choice of phase required so as to maintain horizontal phase coherence between related STFT bins. Furthermore, the approach leads to a reduction in computational load within the range of time-scaling factors for which phasiness is reduced.

An Examination of EU Directive 98/76/EC in Regards to the Irish Road Haulage Industry
(2003)
Plant, Eoin; Allen, Declan; Sweeney, Edward
Abstract:

The Irish economy experienced a tremendous increase in economic growth during the 1990s and early 21st Century (Celtic Tiger). This economic boom was export driven and the Irish Road Haulage Industry transported the majority of products produced at some stage, if not a number of stages in the logistics tunnel. In recent times there has been somewhat of a growing unease in the road haulage industry in relation to increasing costs, squeezing already tight profit margins. A report commissioned by the Department of Public Enterprise illustrated that 48% of hauliers identified themselves as needing training in the area of cost calculation (Indecon, 1999). As a result, many hauliers are unable to accurately analyse costs; this can lead to incorrect management decisions in relation to pricing and rate setting, with the potential to significantly erode profitability levels. The Indecon report stated, “this is an area where there is very little information in the indust...

Audio Time-scale Modification using a Hybrid Time-frequency Domain Approach
(2005)
Dorran, David; Coyle, Eugene; Lawlor, Robert
Abstract:

Frequency-domain approaches to audio time-scale modification introduce a reverberant artefact into the time-scaled output due to a loss in phase coherence between subband components. Whilst techniques have been developed which reduce the presence of this artifact, it remains a source of difficulty. A method of time-scaling is presented that reduces the presence of the reverberation by taking advantage of some flexibility that exists in the choice of phase required so as to maintain horizontal phase coherence along frequency-domain subband components. The approach makes use of appealing aspects of existing time-domain and frequency-domain time-scaling techniques.

Automating Ornamentation Transcription
(2007)
Gainza, Mikel; Coyle, Eugene
Abstract:

A novel technique for detecting single and multi-note ornaments is presented. The system detects audio segments by utilising and onset detector based on comb filters (ODCF), which is capable of detecting very close events. In addition, a novel method to remove spurious onsets due to offset events is introduced. The system utilises musical ornamentation theory to decide whether a sequence of audio segments correspond to an ornamentation musical structure. In order to evaluate the results, a database of signals produced by different players using the three different instruments has been utilised. The results represent a step forward towards fully automating ornamentation transcription

Comparison of Signal Reconstruction Methods for the Azimuth Discrimination and Resynthesis Algorithm
(2005)
Barry, Dan; Lawlor, Robert; Coyle, Eugene
Abstract:

The Azimuth Discrimination and Resynthesis algorithm (ADRess) has been shown to produce high quality sound source separation results for intensity panned stereo recordings. There are however, artifacts such as phasiness which become apparent in the separated signals under certain conditions. This is largely due to the fact that only the magnitude spectra for the separated sources are estimated. Each source is then resynthesised using the phase information obtained from the original mixture. This paper describes the nature and origin of the associated artifacts and proposes alternative techniques for resynthesising the separated signals. A comparison of each technque is then presented.

Development of a Computer-Based Violin Teaching Aid: ViTool
(2005)
Charles, Jane; Fitzgerald, Derry; Coyle, Eugene
Abstract:

This paper considers the development of a violin teaching aid, called ViTool, which is based on violin pedagogy, sound analysis, and comparison of beginner and good player recordings. It is a computer based teaching aid and will ultimately consist of at least four task dependent tools. Typical beginner faults have been identified and features, that best describe them for classification purposes, are considered. The ViTool is not intended as a replacement or electronic teacher, but as a teaching aid. Presently, it seems that no such violin learning aid or tool exists and an opportunity exists for the development of such home learning aids. This paper puts forward the initial steps towards such a teaching aid.

Development of a Construction Sub-Sector Embodied Energy Hybrid Analysis
(2008)
Acquaye, Adolf C.; Duffy, Aidan P.; Basu, Biswajit
Abstract:
Embodied energy analysis is used to evaluate the total energy consumed by any product during all the stages leading up to its manufacture and delivery and can also be used to determine the energy-related environmental impacts such as CO2 emissions of buildings and other built infrastructure. In the wake of increase global awareness on climate change and the strong link between global warming and CO2 emissions, the role of new and improved analytical models to evaluate the energy embodied in products and its associated environmental impacts therefore takes an important role in environmental research studies. The development of a new hybrid embodied energy analysis model which methodologically improves the accuracy of the energy intensity of the construction sector is presented in this paper. This hybrid methodology is applied to four built infrastructure and their respective energy intensities determined. The four construction projects are; a bridge and three different building types...

Development of a Framework for the Assessment of the Role and Impact of Technology on the Public Procurement Process: an Irish Health Sector Study
(2010)
Davis, Paul, (Thesis)
Abstract:

This thesis sets out to examine how the role and impact of technology, in the context of the public procurement process, can be assessed by addressing it as a single bounded structural entity. The thesis specifically examines the procurement process in the Irish Health Sector. This thesis takes the view that context for the procurement process is critical and that adopting a structuration approach to the examination of the process allows for a greater understanding of the role of technology. The thesis is built around a thematic structure which examines the changing relationship between information technology systems and organisational structure. In particular the thesis focuses in on the interaction of technology and people in the context of a process. The methodological approach is the development of case studies. Three case studies are examined in particular, the first two taking the traditional approach of examining technology impact on an organisation. The third case e...

Development of a Theoretical Decoupled Stirling Cycle Engine
(2009)
Cullen, Barry; McGovern, Jim
Abstract:

The Stirling cycle engine is gaining increasing attention in the current energy market as a clean, quiet and versatile prime mover for use in such situations as solar thermal generation, micro cogeneration and other micro distributed generation situations. A theoretical Stirling cycle engine model is developed. Using a theoretical decoupled engine configuration in which working space swept volume, volume variation, phase angle and dead space ratio are controlled via a black-box electronic controller, a model is developed that is to be used as a tool for analysis of the ideal Stirling cycle engine and the limits on its real world realisation. The theoretical configuration approximates the five–space configuration common in Stirling cycle analysis. It comprises two working spaces and three heat exchangers: hot side, cold side and the regenerator between. The kinematic crank mechanism is replaced with an electronically controlled motor/generator system, with one motor/genera...

Ryan, Colm; Wagner, Claudia-Maria; Sweeney, Edward; Esposito, Emilio; Evangelista, Pietro
Abstract:

This paper assesses the effect of non-physicality of a digital product - software - on SCM practice. A number of in-depth, one-on-one interviews were held in 8 software companies that predominantly supply to enterprise customers on a global scale. The aim was to explore distribution challenges within software supply chains and how companies are addressing these challenges. The research has identified three different classes of software distribution models: One, which tends to rely on traditional physical infrastructures and paradigms, and two others that better exploit the properties of the digital products.

Drum Source Separation using Percussive Feature Detection and Spectral Modulation
(2005)

Abstract:

This papers presents a method for the separation and resynthesis of drum sources from single channel polyphonic mixtures. The frequency domain technique involves identifying the presence of a drum using a novel percussive feature detection function, after which the short-time magniture spectrum is estimated and scaled according to an estimated time-amplitude function derived from the percussive measure. In addition to producing high quality separation results, the method described is also a useful pre-process for drum transcription techniques such as Prior Subspace Analysis in the presence of pitched instruments.

Drum Transcription in the Presence of Pitched Instruments using Prior Subspace Analysis
(2003)
Fitzgerald, Derry; Lawlor, Robert; Coyle, Eugene
Abstract:

This paper demonstrates the use of Prior Subspace Analysis (PSA) as a method for transcribing drums in the presence of pitched instruments. PSA uses prior subspaces that represent the sources to be transcribed to overcome some of the problems associated with other subspace methods such as Independent Subspace Analysis (ISA) or sub-band ISA. The use of prior knowledge results in improved robustness for transcription purposes and enables the method to work more readily in the presence of pitched instruments than other subspace methods. The system presented in this paper attempts to extend the use of PSA to transcribe drum sounds in the presence of interfering pitched instruments.

Drum Transcription using Automatic Grouping of Events and Prior Subspace Analysis
(2003)

Abstract:

While Prior Subspace Analysis (PSA) has proved an effective tool for transcribung mixtures of snare, kick drum and hi-hat, attempts to extend it to increased numbers of drum types have met with mixed results. To overcome this an automatic grouping method has been developed to group drum events on their similarity in frequency content. Combined with PSA this creates a system able to handle robustly greater numbers of drum types. The effectiveness of this method is demonstrated in a drum transcription algorithm.

Educating Engineers for the 21st. Century: and why some Elements of History and Philosophy should be Incorporated into the Curriculum
(2007)

Abstract:

It has been said that in some respects the Russian composer Igor Stravinsky was a magpie – borrowing styles and ideas from diverse sources for whatever musical project he was working on. The practice of engineering has this same characteristic in that it willingly takes ideas, knowledge and techniques from wherever in pursuit of completing its goal. Further, Engineering is, at least in part, in agreement with Fyodor Dostoevsky – ‘if everything on Earth were rational, nothing would happen’. Against such a background it is proposed that a framework based on both philosophy and the history of engineering, science and technology constitutes a valid footing upon which engineers can be enabled to see and develop their profession in a suitably rounded manner.
