'It Took a Leap of Faith.' Care and Connect: A Model for Practitioner Research in Ireland
(2017)
Donnelly, Sarah; Anand, Janet
Abstract:
Irish social work has been slow to develop a research culture and professional structure to support research capacity. International literature suggests that one of the major reasons for the lack of research activity amongst social work practitioners is the absence of collaborative links between university based researchers and social work practitioners in the field (March and Fisher 2005; Shaw 2003:2005; Gibbs 2001). In 2006, senior staff from Tallaght Hospital, Dublin and the School of Social Work and Social Policy, Trinity College Dublin, recognised the need for a strategic approach for the promotion of research capacity and activity amongst social work practitioners. This paper discusses an academic/hospital partnership project "Care and Connect", that sought to explore the opportunities for developing practice based research in a health care setting in Dublin.

McMahon, Conor
Abstract:
The present study investigates the social network experience of a group of young people who have experience of long-term foster care. The study area is the North West area of the HSE-West and the study group is composed of two groups of young people: a group who are currently in care and a group who have left the 3 care system. The research focussed on the following issues: the composition of the young people’s social networks, the significance and importance of the individuals and groups within the social network to the young people, and the connection between foster care and the social network experience of the study group. The central focus is to examine the impact of Foster Care on the social network experience of the young people. The study utilised both qualitative and quantitative methods in it’s approach and can be described as qualitative dominant mixed methods research, with the use of a qualitative semi-structured interview being supported by two standardised measures. ‘ People think it’s not the real world - but it’s our world’ The significance of relationships found on the threshold between the private and the public: Exploring engagement between mothers and early years practitioners in a changing Ireland./ [PhD thesis]
(2014)

Abstract:
Irish society has undergone significant economic and social transformation in the past two decades . The rapid development of the early years sector, supporting unprecedented levels of female employment, is indicative of this transformation. While the use of early years services can be perceived as a functional act, the process is also an emotional one, as a parent’s basic obligation to care is transferred to another. This thesis focuse s on these newly established social and familial behaviours , offering an exploration o f relationships between parents and childcare practitioners, within a changing Irish context. The exploratory approach to research employed an ethnographic methodology, underpinned by a social constructionist epistemology to investigate these under - studie d relationships. The research findings were analysed through the theoretical lens of the ethic of care, as well as drawing on theories and literature from relevant areas. Key research findings reveal ideas and ...

Evans, William; O'Connor, Tom
Abstract:

The original article is available at http://www.oatext.com

Analysing qualitative data can be challenging for novice researchers and is best summarised by Silverman [1]: ‘You have gathered your interviews, selected your documents or made some observations. Now what do you do?’ [2]. There are many different ways to analyse data and decisions about which analytical approach to choose from can be challenging. The paper will introduce a number of analytical approaches from different research traditions and introduce how they can be employed when analysing qualitative data. In addition, the benefits of utilising computer assisted technology to complete qualitative data analysis will be presented.

5 ways to increase the impact of your research!
(2014)
Bracken, Fintan
Abstract:
Introduction: In recent years, the growth of published health-related research articles has increased substantially. As a result there is a huge challenge for authors to get themselves and their research papers noticed by academia, health professionals and the wider public. This poster presentation outlines some of the main methods that authors can employ to increase the impact of their research. Methods: A review of current literature was conducted to establish best international practice for improving the impact of research outputs. This was supplemented by a review of blogs, websites, seminar presentations and other online material from bibliometrics experts and reputable universities. Results: The results of the review found many different ways in which research impact can be improved but for clarity the five most important methods are presented. Researchers can increase the impact of their research by:1. Publishing in high impact journals;2. Collaborating with other researchers;...

Abstract:
Person centred planning (PCP) has an essential part to play in ensuring self determination for the lives of people with intellectual disability. It is typically taken as an indicator to the quality of services and it is regarded as especially important when considering its effectiveness in impacting on the lives of people with intellectual disability. Robertson’s et al (2005) six indices of PCP efficacy of social networks, community involvement, scheduled day services, contact with friends, contact with family and choice are regarded as a standard measure. This research examined the PCP process and its impact on the reality of the life of the person with intellectual disability. It considered the understanding of various stakeholders in the PCP process and investigated whether PCP brings added value to the lives of people with intellectual disability in community settings. Finally, it explored the relationship between the theory, policy, and outcomes of PCP for ongoing practice. Usi...

A guide to the Disability Federation of Ireland affiliated organisations for people with physical or sensory disabilities or with mental health problems.
(2000)
Kiernan, Judith
Abstract:
Early last year, Disability Federation of lreland (OFI) decided to undertake research into physical, sensory and mental health services provided through its affiliated organisations. The federation considered that it was still difficult to get a picture of the general state of development of these organisations, their ranges of services and other activities. The federation also observed that the recent, major strides forward in the learning disability voluntary services' sector were facilitated and underpinned by an understanding of the opportunities and challenges facing that sector. In the light of these considerations, the federation commissioned the present research.

A handbook for research in general practice
(1986)
Comber, Harry; Irish College of General Practitioners. Education and Research Committee
Abstract:
Why do research? Medical students and doctors in training are asked to accept two incompatible view. of medicine - firstly, that it is a scientific discipline based on objective research, and secondly, that everything which they are taught is true and not to be questioned. In the environment of examinations and career competition, the second view tends to gain precedence, and only occasionally does the young doctor glimpse the very shaky foundations on which 'scientific medicine' is actually based. As a practicing general practitioner, however, he soon discovers facts that conflict with the 'facts' which he swallowed whole in medical school; he discovers that what he has learned is one part fact to every ten parts of educated guesswork; and that there are very few definite answers to the questions which arise in his daily work. For most of us then, our practice is mainly a matter of trial and error.

A holistic overview of software engineering research strategies
(2015)
Stol, Klaas-Jan; Fitzgerald, Brian
Abstract:
Empirical research studies are the principal mechanism through which the software engineering research community studies and learns from software engineering practice. The focus on empirical studies has increased significantly in the past decade, more or less coinciding with the emergence of evidencebased software engineering, an idea that was proposed in 2004. As a consequence, the software engineering community is familiar with a range of empirical methods. However, while several overviews exist of popular empirical research methods, such as case studies and experiments, we lack a ‘holistic’ view of a more complete spectrum of research methods. Furthermore, while researchers will readily accept that all methods have inherent limitations, methods such as case study are still frequently critiqued for the lack of control that a researcher can exert in such a study, their use of qualitative data, and the limited generalizability that can be achieved. Controlled experiments are seen by...

Abstract:
The Academy's review, 'A new pathway for the regulation and governance of health research' was published in January 2011. The report was prepared by a working group, chaired by Professor Sir Michael Rawlins FMedSci, convened in response to an invitation from Government to review the regulation and governance of UK health research involving human participants, their tissue or their data. The report proposes four key principles that should underpin the regulation and governance framework around health research in the UK, and makes recommendations to:Create a new Health Research Agency (HRA) to rationalise the regulation and governance of all health research. Include within the HRA a new National Research Governance Service to facilitate timely approval of research studies by NHS Trusts. Improve the UK environment for clinical trials.Provide access to patient data that protects individual interests and allows approved research to proceed effectively. Embed a culture that ...

A relative impact ranking of political studies in Ireland
(2009)
Benoit, Kenneth; Marsh, Michael
Abstract:
Against a background of the Irish government?s concerns with Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and the British government?s wishes for a more quantitative Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), our study conducts a relative impact assessment of the study of politics, government, political science, and international relations in Ireland. Impact is measured as citations from the publications of permanent staff in eight Irish politics departments, based on data compiled in April 2008 from two leading academic indexes ? ISI?s Web of Science and Scopus ? as well as the now popular Google Scholar. We discuss some of the criticisms that naturally arise in a study of this nature. Then, following similar exercises in other disciplines (e.g. economics), we use the impact measures to compare and rank individual scholars as well as departments. We also explore the extent to which the choice of different indexes, and different measures, influences the results that we obtain. While there are differe...
