Towards Non-expert Users Monitoring Networks and Services through Semantically Enhanced Visualizations
(2010)
HAMPSON, CORMAC; KEENEY, JOHN; CONLAN, OWEN
Abstract:
Managing networks and services in large virtual enterprises often requires significant expertise to decipher and reconcile information coming from several heterogeneous sources. This presents a significant challenge as the person with the network management expertise is not necessarily the person who has the task or vision of how to maximize the value of these services. Conversely it would be valuable for dedicated network managers to have insight into the meaning of the services running over the network. This paper presents an approach to empowering users to monitor and eventually manage network devices and services that they are not necessarily expert in. This paper details this challenge, presents two enabling technological frameworks and offers two compelling case studies currently being addressed in the Federated, Autonomic Management of End-to-End Communications Services (FAME) project.

A Framework for the Analysis and User-Driven Evaluation of Trust on the Semantic Web
(2014)
Clarke, Peter
Abstract:
This project will examine the area of trust on the Semantic Web and develop a framework for publishing and verifying trusted Linked Data. Linked Data describes a method of publishing structured data, automatically readable by computers, which can linked to other heterogeneous data with the purpose of becoming more useful. Trust plays a significant role in the adoption of new technologies and even more so in a sphere with such vast amounts of publicly-created data. Trust is paramount to the effective sharing and communication of tacit knowledge (Hislop, 2013). Up to now, the area of trust in Linked Data has not been adequately addressed, despite the Semantic Web stack having included a trust layer from the very beginning (Artz and Gil, 2007). Some of the most accurate data on the Semantic Web lies practically unused, while some of the most used linked data has high numbers of errors (Zaveri et al., 2013). Many of the datasets and links that exist on the Semantic Web are out of date a...

Accounting for the features of Shape and Transitivity in a Functional-Typological approach to the Ring Languages
(2020)
BROWNE, CIARA
Abstract:
The Ring languages, an understudied sub-group of the Grassfields Bantu family is examined from a function-typological perspective in relation to features of [Shape] and [Transitivity] as per Rijkhoff (2002, 2003). The word classes of noun, adjective and verb of a selection of these languages are examined as to their sensitivity to these features along with implications of these findings in areas such as the position of modifiers in the NP, how these relate to the notion of iconicity and NP word order, and the impact on voice and valence-changing constructions. Evidence to suggest that the Ring languages do not a have a large distinct adjectival class suggests that its nominals may be characterised by the feature [-Shape]. While Rijkhoff (2002) largely points to sortal numeral classifiers as evidence for [-Shape] nominals, an examination of the semantics of Ring noun classes along with the presence of partially grammaticalised numeral classifier systems in line with findings form Dim...

An open Approach to Contextualising Heterogeneous Cultural Heritage Datasets
(2007)
McAuley, John; Carswell, James
Abstract:
This paper describes a semantic museum application, which aims to present a holistic impression of the Etruscan civilisation. Through the use of a distributed computing paradigm and the CIDOC CRM ontology, the system presents a unified view of a fragmented heritage, while supporting browse and search at a semantic level. Within the cultural heritage world, however, much value is placed on ‘context’, both in describing and presenting heritage artefacts. From this perspective, a platform built upon the distributed search paradigm, although useful in many respects, does not convey how an artefact sits within a broader setting. Narrative concepts are proposed as a way of reconciling heritage artefacts with their original context. A community of domain experts (i.e. Etruscan archaeologists and heritage professionals) is supported in contributing their knowledge and interpretation through a comprehensive authoring process. Narrative content is then organised according to several broad, hi...

Design and Implementation of an Archetype Based Interoperable Knowledge Eco-system for Data Buoys
(2017)
Stacey, Paul; Berry, Damon
Abstract:
This paper describes the ongoing work of the authors in translating two-level system design techniques used in Health Informatics to the Earth Systems Science domain. Health informaticians have developed a sophisticated two-level systems design approach for electronic health documentation over many years, and with the use of archetypes, have shown how knowledge interoperability among heterogeneous systems can be achieved. Translating two-level modelling techniques to a new domain is a complex task. A proof-of-concept archetype enabled data buoy eco-system is presented. The concept of operational templates-as-a service is proposed. Design recommendations and implementation experiences of re-working the proposed architecture to run on ultra-resource constrained data buoy platforms using templates-as-service are described.

Abstract:
2015 Annual Conference on Genetic and Evolutionary Computation (GECCO 2015), Madrid, Spain, July, 2015
Semantics has gained much attention in the last few years and new advanced crossover and mutation operations have been created which use semantic information to improve the quality and generalisability of individuals in genetic programming. In this paper we present a new selection operator in grammatical evolution which uses semantic information of individuals instead of just the fitness value. The semantic traits of an individual are stored in a vector. An unsupervised learning technique is used to cluster individuals based on their semantic vector. Individuals are only allowed to reproduce with individuals from the same cluster to preserve semantic locality and intensify the search in a certain semantic area. At the same time, multiple semantic areas are covered by the search as there exist multiple clusters which cover different areas and therefore preserve semantic diversit...

Abstract:
Broadcasters around the world are in desperate need to automate content production as much as possible. This need is twofold on the one side automatic production for good structured program parts is needed on the other hand production for different target devices is an issue. The EC project SALERO has developed a range of tools enabling automatic template based production of animation clips with virtual presenters over the past years. In this paper we describe the workflow devised by the project to automate major parts of media production based on 3D content. This is accompanied by a description by the individual tools developed and examples from the experimental productions implemented with this tools.

Semantic community portals
(2018)
O’Murchu, Ina; Zhdanova, Anna V.; Breslin, John G.
Abstract:
Many virtual communities have surfaced and come together on the World Wide Web. Web-based community portals serve as a one-stop place for all information needs serving a group of users that have common interests. As organizations become highly dynamic and the people that join them become more geographically dispersed, the need for improved ways to share and distribute data and information amongst the community or organization members has increased dramatically.

Semantic markup in discussion fora

Abstract:
Discussion tools in existing LEs have few or no integrated tools to analyse student learning. This paper proposes tools not only for integrating social network analytics, but also why we need to semantically tag and track key concepts within posts in order to make student learning in discussions visible. This paper will argue for the importance of semantic markup in discussion tools using screenshots of existing LEs and UI mockups of semantically aware discussion tools to argue the case for this element of next generation LEs

Susceptibility to a multisensory speech illusion in older persons is driven by perceptual processes

Abstract:
Recent studies suggest that multisensory integration is enhanced in older adults but it is not known whether this enhancement is solely driven by perceptual processes or affected by cognitive processes. Using the McGurk illusion, in Experiment 1 we found that audio-visual integration of incongruent audio-visual words was higher in older adults than in younger adults, although the recognition of either audio- or visual-only presented words was the same across groups. In Experiment 2 we tested recall of sentences within which an incongruent audio-visual speech word was embedded. The overall semantic meaning of the sentence was compatible with either one of the unisensory components of the target word and/or with the illusory percept. Older participants recalled more illusory audio-visual words in sentences than younger adults, however, there was no differential effect of word compatibility on recall for the two groups. Our findings suggest that the relatively high susceptibility to t...

The genesis and emergence of Web 3.0: a study in the integration of artificial intelligence and the semantic web in knowledge creation
(2009)

Abstract:
The web as we know it has evolved rapidly over the last decade. We have gone from a phase of rapid growth as seen with the dot.com boom where business was king to the current web 2.0 phase where social networking, Wiki’s, Blogs and other related tools flood the bandwidth of the world wide web. The empowerment of the web user with web 2.0 technologies has led to the exponential growth of data, information and knowledge on the web. With this rapid change, there is a need to logically categorise this information and knowledge so it can be fully utilised by all. It can be argued that the power of the knowledge held on the web is not fully exposed under its current structure and to improve this we need to explore the foundations of the web. This dissertation will explore the evolution of the web from its early days to the present day. It will examine the way web content is stored and discuss the new semantic technologies now available to represent this content. The research aims to demon...

Abstract:
As more and more data becomes available on the Web, as its complexity increases and as the Web’s user base shifts towards a more general non-technical population, keyword searching is becoming a valuable alternative to traditional SQL queries, mainly due to its simplicity and the lower effort/expertise it requires. Existing approaches suffer from a number of limitations when applied to multi-source scenarios requiring some form of query planning, without direct access to database instances, and with frequent updates precluding any effective implementation of data indexes. Typical scenarios include Deep Web databases, virtual data integration systems and data on the Web. Therefore, building effective keyword searching techniques can have an extensive impact since it allows non-professional users to access large amounts of information stored in structured repositories through simple keyword-based query interfaces. This revolutionises the paradigm of searching for data since users are ...

Two-to-one color-response mapping and the presence of semantic conflict in the Stroop task
(2019)
Hasshim, Nabil; Parris, Benjamin A.
Abstract:
A series of recent studies have utilized the two-to-one mapping paradigm in the Stroop task. In this paradigm, the word red might be presented in blue when both red and blue share the same-response key (same-response trials). This manipulation has been used to show the separate contributions of (within) semantic category conflict and response conflict to Stroop interference. Such results evidencing semantic category conflict are incompatible with models of the Stroop task that are based on response conflict only. However, the nature of same-response trials is unclear since they are also likely to involve response facilitation given that both dimensions of the stimulus provide evidence toward the same-response. In this study we explored this possibility by comparing them with three other trial types. We report strong (Bayesian) evidence for no statistical difference between same-response and non-color word neutral trials, faster responses to same-response trials than to non-response ...
