Conflict, territory and new technologies: Online interaction at a Belfast interface
(2012)
Ó Dochartaigh, Niall
Abstract:
This article examines the relationship between new information and communication technologies and territorial boundaries through an analysis of online interaction oriented around a sectarian interface in north Belfast. It is widely argued that new information and communication technologies are contributing to fundamental changes in the nature of territory and boundaries, with many arguing that they contribute to a deterritorialisation of social interaction. This article argues that new technologies neither transcend nor obliterate territorial boundaries but in certain senses reinforce and extend the role of physical boundaries as orienting locations for hostile interaction. Focusing on the interlinked territorial strategies of penetration and surveillance it argues that online interaction facilitates the extension and elaboration of territorial strategies oriented around physical lines of confrontation and the associated development of new material practices oriented around the phys...

Finn’s Seat: topographies of power and royal marchlands of Gaelic polities in medieval Ireland
(2018)
FitzPatrick, Elizabeth; Hennessy, Ronan
Abstract:
Hill- and mountain-top cairns and mounds in Ireland are often viewed as epiphenomenal features of the medieval landscape. In recent years, research on early medieval ferta, ancestral burial places cited in the legal procedure of taking possession of land and invoked during disputes over land, has highlighted the role of some sepulchral cairns and mounds in boundary maintenance. This paper proposes that particular cairns and mounds, imagined at least as early as the tenth century as Finn s Seat (Suidhe Finn), acted as territorial markers in boundary formation and continuity, and signified royal marchlands (mruig ríg) where Gaelic kings went to hunt and to fight. It is argued that such lands were essentially forests, where a range of natural resources were available. A window onto royal marchlands is provided by the medieval Finn Cycle of Tales (fíanaigecht) which encodes knowledge of medieval territorial boundary zones in the names of the places where the quasi-mythical warrior-hunte...

Gaelic service kindreds and the landscape identity of Lucht Tighe
(2018)
FitzPatrick, Elizabeth
Abstract:
This paper discusses the character of the lands of householders who served the courts of Gaelic lords in later medieval Ireland and how their association with those lands, which were mostly of early medieval royal origin, was integral to their identities as hereditary service providers. It demonstrates that this approach has the capacity to reveal a more total picture of later medieval settlement in Gaelic polities than

Reconfiguring the contours of statehood and the rights of the peoples of disappearing states
(2016)
Skillington, Tracey
Abstract:
Many of the elements that have traditionally supported state level normative self-organization, most notably territory, are being actively undermined by rising sea levels, flooding, desertification, amongst other climate change effects. As more and more states come to be redefined as â disappearingâ , that is, states losing their territories to the natural environment through no specific fault of their own, a question arises as to how displaced communities will be assisted in their desire (and right) to continue to practice principles of self-determination and self-government? What is clear is that the international community can no longer continue with the fiction of a unified or unchanging model of the liberal democratic state. Instead, alternative ontological models of sovereign community are required, as is a re-imagining of how statehood might be re-constituted in the future in response to deepening ecological problems. The international community must now begin to address th...
