A follow-up project on perceptions of women about fertility, sex, and motherhood: probing the data further
(2006)
Murphy-Lawless, Jo
Abstract:
This report is the result of a follow-up study to the Crisis Pregnancy Agency study Understanding how sexually active women think about fertility, sex, and motherhood (Murphy-Lawless, Oaks and Brady 2004). The original study was based on in-depth qualitative interviews with 66 Irish women from across the country in the age range 18- 34. The study focused on the women’s: – perceptions and experiences of sex – feelings about dealing with fertility and motherhood. The rationale for the follow-up study arose from two constraints on the original project. First of all, the timeframe meant that the research team was unable to collect data from an important group: younger, low-waged women from rural communities. Secondly, the large amount of data collected for the original project was not able to be fully utilised in the published report in respect of several themes involving how women deal with being sexually active and how they feel they are perceived in that role, specifically: – being l...

Abstract:
Abstract Background Universal screening using the International Association of Diabetes and Pregnancy Study Groups (IADPSG) criteria has identified a prevalence of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) of 12.4% in women living in Ireland. Women with prior GDM are at increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life. A number of risk factors linked to the development of type 2 diabetes are potentially modifiable through lifestyle and behaviour changes, and medical management. No previous Irish studies have adequately investigated the efficacy of lifestyle intervention programmes in reducing these risk factors in women with prior GDM. Through a two-group, parallel randomised controlled trial (RCT), this study aims to assess the clinical impact, cost-effectiveness and psychological experience of the Croí MyAction intensive lifestyle modification programme for women with prior GDM. An Investigation into the Dietary and Health Behaviours of Pregnant Women in Ireland

An Investigation into the Dietary and Health Behaviours of Pregnant Women in Ireland
(2016)
Mullaney, Laura
Abstract:
Maternal obesity increases the risk of metabolic complications in pregnancy such as gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Effective weight management following childbirth may reduce long-term metabolic risks among women of child bearing age. The aim of this study was to investigate the diet and health behaviours of pregnant and postpartum women in Ireland. Accurate dietary assessment in pregnancy is often difficult to achieve. We have shown that dietary under-reporting is more likely among pregnant women who are younger, materially deprived, obese and who have increased adiposity. These findings suggest that dietary underreporting represents a source of potential bias in obstetric obesity research. Obese pregnant women of low socioeconomic status may require more specialised dietary assessment methods. Technology increasingly dictates the way in which we collect and communicate information, highlighting the potential utility of innovative web-based dietary assessment and intervention...

Abstract:
In the event of failure to secure the airway by conventional means, it may be necessary to perform invasive airway access via the cricothyroid membrane. No studies have addressed anatomy of this structure in the obstetric population. We aimed to review the anatomical variation of this structure in a population of childbearing age.

Body fat distribution in Turner syndrome and the influence of puberty
(2014)
Nadeem, N; Roche, EF
Abstract:
Girls with Turner syndrome (TS) may encounter a wide range of problems. We aim to describe the body composition and its relation to the pubertal development, in affected girls. Precocious pubarche has been found to be associated with excess total body and central fat mass throughout all pubertal stages 1 . Early menarche has impact on body fatness 2 . In girls with TS, growth hormone (GH) was associated with favourable changes in body composition 3 . The consensus, with respect to the association between body composition and pubertal development, has still not been reached in those with TS. We therefore set out to determine the body fat distribution in Irish girls with TS who have attained with breast Tanner stage 2 or more with or without menarche. The influence of pubertal development on fat distribution was also examined. The fat mass of the total body, trunk, arms, and legs was estimated by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Fisherâ s Exact test or Mann-Whitney U test was used t...

Caring about Women and Cancer (CAWAC): results of the survey in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.
(2000)
Codd, Mary B. on behalf of the CAWAC National Advisory Board of Ireland.
Abstract:
This report presents the results of a unique survey of Irish women with breast and gynaecological cancer. The survey in Ireland was part of a collaborative pan-European initiative known as the "Caring about Women and Cancer" (CAWAC) project, which was set up to investigate and report on aspects of the diagnosis and treatment of breast and gynaecological cancers in 15 European countries. Over 700 Irish women participated in the self-administered questionnaire survey. Information was sought on their knowledge and perceptions of cancer prior to diagnosis, their use of relevant screening tests prior to diagnosis, their satisfaction with aspects of the diagnosis and treatment of cancer and the impact of cancer on their relationships and lifestyle. The key findings of the survey are: Women are relatively uninformed about cancer prior to diagnosis. When asked about sources of information on cancer, television, radio and magazines are identified as the principal sources. Use of sc...

Community Mothers Programme annual report 2010
(2011)
Health Service Executive (HSE), Dublin North East; Molly, Brenda; Health Service Executive (HSE), Dublin Mid-Leinster
Abstract:
The Community Mothers Programme is facilitated by the Health Service Executive (HSE), and operates in the HSE areas Dublin North East and Dublin Mid-Leinster. Its aim is to develop the skills of parents of young children with a focus on health care, nutritional improvement and overall child development. It is a parent support programme in which friendly local women known as Community Mothers carry out monthly structured visits to first-time and some second-time parents by appointment during the first two years of their babies’ lives, providing empathy and information in a non-directive way to foster parenting skills and parental selfesteem. Through the Programme the parents become empowered to believe in their own capabilities and skills for parenting without being dependent on professionals. The Family Development Nurses who facilitate the Programme have moved away from the biological model of health care which is working for people, to a model which involves working with people. I...

Dementia care: challenges for an ageing Europe.
(1999)
European Institute of Women's Health.
Abstract:
The European Institute of Women's Health is to be congratulated on the publication of Dementia Care: Challenges for an Ageing Europe, which highlights the challenges posed by Alzheimer's disease and other dementias to European Member States. The cross-country comparison of policies and practices undertaken in this report provides a valuable assessment of the variation that currently exists regarding treatment of dementia and support of carers. The European Institute of Women's Health rightly points out that the challenge facing Europe as a community lies in developing an interdisciplinary combination of medical, clinical, social, economic, governmental and personal approaches to those with dementia and their families. The recommendation of the report that special emphasis should be placed on the "personhood" of the dementia patient is to be welcomed particularly. It reiterates key policy principles that the underlying goal across the European Union must be t...
