Abstract:
As architecture is a culprit in physically detaching people from their surrounding environment I hope to create an architecture of layers each enclosing a particular climate or atmosphere expressed through a specific use of materials. Given the unique climatic and ecological context of any location and by studying this at a micro level, climate becomes the main protagonist of the design and a hierarchy of spaces emerges whereby "form follows climate".

A context and housing for students in Belfast
(2011)
O'Callaghan, Eugene
Abstract:
Architecture is better understood in a context, and this dissertation tries to provide the context for student housing on a city block in the centre of Belfast. The dissertation embodies the thesis idea of the building as a material organisation of the spatial and temporal history of its place; and in particular, how this reading might address a city that too often seems empty. The writing is structured as a spiralling description of context; from the widest, most generic terms towards the narrow and the specific.

A fire risk assessment technique for educational establishments
(2003)
Hrymak, Victor; O'Reilly, Noel
Abstract:

It is now widely considered as good practice to include fire risk assessment techniques when developing a fire risk management system. However there is little guidance as to how to evaluate the influence of organisational culture and human behaviour on the resultant level of fire safety. Since most accidents are caused by the failure of management systems, quantified risk assessment must take into account local safety management practices, or else it will not provide reliable information”.

This study tries to address this issue by developing a new fire risk assessment technique for assessing the fire safety management system of a multi-site, third level educational organisation .

Information gathering

The new technique used the traditional risk assessment technique of knowledge based surveying, to assess the bu...

Architecure is a social art form
(2011)
Cahill, Jeremiah
Abstract:
The spatial perspective of human society has become widely recognized as an influential force in shaping human behaviour and societal development. The design of our everyday spaces, which we interact directly and indirectly, impact on our social progress as a society and as individuals. As designers of the built environment we must understand the social standing of our work and its interaction with the people who use, inhabit or simply view it. I will hope to investigate and design this interaction between people and the built spaces on a social and physical level.

Coast (blurred) line: when productive activity meets spectacle at the coast
(2011)
Higgins, Orla
Abstract:
Through investigations of local vernacular and historical building along the coast of Ireland, I’ve sought to add new value along the coastal edge. The thesis explores the impact of the natural condition on how manmade structures are constructed at the coastal edge. It investigates flora and fauna indigenous to the coastline whose metaphysics are influenced by the changes in the tide. The area about the coastline has been referred to as an in-between space as it neither belongs to land nor sea and I’ve used architectural precedents of in-between spaces, be they on the coastline or not, to explore this. As the tide moves in and moves out spectacular events occur on large and small scales that draw people to the seashore-this is where man can explore ocean life. The research suggests that by dealing very carefully with a specific natural situation and cultural condition, the identity of a place can be strengthened. The outcome of the thesis is to produce an architectural project parti...

Developing a living city process : an architect's approach to enabling interdisciplinary practice in infrastructure development
(2011)
Webb, Rosemarie
Abstract:
This research project develops a methodology for creating multifunctional infrastructure projects. It focuses on enabling an interdisciplinary approach to the establishment of a brief for the redesign of a road, the orbital route, in Galway City, Ireland. The research begins with the premise that infrastructure projects are unavoidably multifunctional in nature, having both social and utilitarian aspects. The project defines a method of conceiving of these projects using mapping, case studies and interactive networking to include social, aesthetic and ecological concerns as well as technical criteria. The hypothesis being explored is that employing multidisciplinary, creative forms of practice in conceiving of infrastructural development can both assist in creating a healthy, humane and liveable public environment to improve civic life and can facilitate participatory urban planning. The research concentrates on defining an alternate process of project inception and definition for i...

Evolutionary design using grammatical evolution and shape grammars : designing a shelter
(2010)
O'Neill, Michael; McDermott, James; Swafford, John Mark; Byrne, Jonathan; Hemberg, Erik; Brabazon, Anthony; Shotton, Elizabeth; McNally, Ciaran; Hemberg, Martin
Abstract:
A new evolutionary design tool is presented, which uses shape grammars and a grammar-based form of evolutionary computation, grammatical evolution (GE). Shape grammars allow the user to specify possible forms, and GE allows forms to be iteratively selected, recombined and mutated: this is shown to be a powerful combination of techniques. The potential of GE and shape grammars for evolutionary design is examined by attempting to design a single-person shelter to be evaluated by collaborators from the University College Dublin School of Architecture, Landscape, and Engineering. The team was able to successfully generate conceptual shelter designs based on scrutiny from the collaborators. A number of avenues for future work are highlighted arising from the case study.

Experimental Energy Performance of Open Cooling Towers Used Under Low and Variable Approach Conditions for Indirect Evaporative Cooling of Buildings
(2003)
Costelloe, Ben; Finn, Donal
Abstract:

The success of chilled ceilings and displacement ventilation systems as a means of sensible cooling in buildings has prompted a review of evaporative cooling technology as an effective means of generating the required cooling water. When such cooling water is generated at low approach conditions (2–5 K), at the higher temperatures required in these systems (14–18°C), very high levels of availability result. In many north western European locations the levels of availability are such that the prospect of supplanting rather than simply supplementing the refrigeration system, for sensible cooling purposes, arises. The viability of the technique, however, largely depends on achieving low approach conditions, at acceptable levels of energy performance. Hence the need to investigate the energy performance of the process. This paper presents the results of recent experimental research into: i) the achievement of low approach conditions in an evaporative cooling test rig; and ii) t...

Extracting geometric models from medieval moundling profiles for case-based reasoning
(2000)
BRADSHAW, GARETH; O'SULLIVAN, CAROL ANN
Abstract:
peer-reviewed
Cross-sectional profiles of medieval mouldings are often considered to be a vital form of data for art historians. Mouldings have often been used to highlight salient areas of buildings, and they provide a wealth of information. To date, little use of computer technology has been made in their acquisition, storage and analysis. The paper presents a representation for such planar curves, and an algorithm for its extraction from planar curves. The representation uses geometric primitives, specifically line and ore segments, which allow the curves to be represented in a compact form, approximating the circular sections more effectively than using linear segments alone. These idealised models provide templates which provide a means for the identification of specific features, within profiles, which can then serve as characteristics for use in case-based reasoning.
