'Níl aon tinteán mar do thinteán féin' / 'There's no place like home' A mixed methods exploratory study of ageing in place
(2014)
McGrath, Margaret
Abstract:
Background Ageing in place refers to the practice of older adults continuing to live in their own homes. Existing research has highlighted both the importance and complexity of ageing in place for older people, however limited attention has been paid to the associated processes. This study explored these processes among a sample of older people living in Ireland. Methodology This study used a two-phase mixed methods exploratory design. In phase one a cross sectional survey design was used to explore older adults' (N=159) beliefs regarding control over their home environment. Sequential multiple regression analysis was used to identify how housing related control beliefs could be predicted by selected demographic, housing and health related characteristics. Phase two of the research used a case study design. Nine cases were purposively selected from participants who were involved in phase one of the study. Data in the form of in-depth interviews, diary entries and photo elicita...

'Science of the singular'; an explanatory single case study of whole school guidance counselling in Ireland
(2018)
Hearne, Lucy; King, Paul; Geary, Tom; Kenny, Neil
Abstract:
This article will discuss the findings of a single explanatory case study on the model of whole school guidance counselling in the Irish secondary school system, which was carried out during a turbulent period of policy and practice changes in the delivery of guidance counselling services to students from 2012 onwards. Although the case study is positioned within a single voluntary school, the findings may be typical of similar secondary schools settings in Ireland and abroad. Particular focus is given to explicating the key findings of the case study through the specific themes of: concepts of whole school guidance counselling, the Irish integrated model of guidance counselling, stakeholder roles and responsibilities, and the effect of resource re-allocations by policy makers funding guidance school services.

Abstract:

This Case Study Report provides the findings of a mixed methods research project that was carried out by the University of Limerick and Dublin City University between November 2014 and May 2016. It is an explanatory single case study that examined the phenomenon of a whole school approach to guidance counselling (personal and social, educational and career) in one Irish voluntary post primary school since the re-allocation of guidance counselling provision in Budget 2012. The research was conducted in the context of national and international policy, practice and research in the area of whole school guidance counselling to young people within the Irish education system during a turbulent period of funding constrictions and resource re-allocations. The study was funded by an Irish Research Council (IRC) Starter Research Grant (2014-2016).

A Case Study Analysis of Student Engagement and Experiences within a Blended Learning Environment in Irish Insurance Education
(2014)
Griffin, Ian
Abstract:
This study reports on the results of active student engagement and experiences in using learning supports within a blended learning environment (BLE) in the Irish insurance sector. Currently, there is a lack of comprehensive research focusing on this topic in the professional education sector. This paper is of interest to e-learning developers and educators who currently offer or are considering changing an education programme to a blended ‘bricks and clicks’ model, as well as those who want to consider how students can effectively engage in a BLE. From an Irish perspective, the Hunt Report (2011) comments that there is an increasing need for the provision of educational opportunities that differ significantly from the traditional model. The paper highlights that blended learning can be an alternative model to the traditional approach provided the correct supports are in place. The two archetypal learning environments can complement each other and accommodate the different learning ...

Abstract:
In this case study, Irish academics reflect on our involvement in a project – Transformative Engagement Network (TEN). This project aims to transform the nature of the engagement between the various stakeholders impacted by or concerned with climate change and to insert the voice and concerns of the most vulnerable food producers into climate change debates. Throughout the project, the Maynooth University team has become increasingly aware of the complexities of development and of the practical and intellectual challenges to the assumptions and beliefs that underpin our disciplines.

Abstract:
This chapter explores the insights gained by a group of teachers from their lived experience as eLearners participating in a blended module on Designing eLearning. An understanding of the student perspective on online learning was obtained but we were also able to reflect on our participation in the module on the basis of our other roles; as teachers and potential eTutors and as course designers. As a result, important considerations were identified for the design and facilitation of online courses. These include; the support provided to online learners, particularly over the first few weeks, appropriate assessment methods, facilitation of online collaboration, access to the Internet, time management and contextualising and scaffolding learning activities. Some issues relating to implementation of effective eLearning in Higher Education Institutions were also considered. Our lived experience as eLearners was invaluable to our development as eTutors and module designers and this appr...

A review of qualitative case methods trends and themes used in technology transfer research
(2018)
Cunningham, James A.; Menter, Matthias; Young, Chris
Abstract:
The focus of this paper is to review the qualitative case methods that have been used in technology transfer research over the last 20 years from 1996 to 2015. Case methods allow for more in-depth analyses and provide the opportunity to place research into a certain context due to the selection of e.g. specific sectors, institutions, countries, etc. Using a systematic literature review of five of the top journals in the field of technology transfer research, namely Journal of Technology Transfer, Research Policy, Science and Public Policy, R&D Management and Technovation, it yielded 107 articles using the search terms: "Technology Transfer'' AND ("Case Study'' OR "Case Method'' OR "Qualitative''). Our findings indicate a clustering of themes using qualitative case methods around technology transfer mechanisms and TTOs, academic entrepreneurship, university-industry collaboration, comm...

A single case study of a whole school approach to guidance counselling in an Irish post-primary school: case report
(2016)
Hearne, Lucy; Geary, Tom; Martin, Noelle
Abstract:
This narrative report will present the findings of a funded research project in the form of a single case study carried out during a specific time period, from the 1st September 2014 to 25th February 2015 in one Irish post primary school. The data collection period took place between late November 2014 and mid-February 2015. This single case study examined a whole school approach to guidance counselling in one post primary school since the re-allocation of guidance counselling provision in Budget 2012. Ever since the Irish Education Act (1998) a whole school approach to guidance counselling has been disseminated by Irish policy-makers as a model of good practice in the delivery of guidance counselling in the post-primary sector (Hearne & Galvin, 2014).

A whole school approach to guidance counselling in the Irish post primary sector: findings from a holistic single case study.

Abstract:
This theoretical paper will discuss the findings from a holistic single case study of a whole school approach to guidance counselling in the Irish voluntary post primary sector in 2015-2016. Voluntary schools are managed under the influence of a specific religious ethos. Prior to Budget 2012 post primary schools were entitled to various levels of guidance counselling staffing (referred to as the ex-quota provision) in addition to the general teaching staff allocation. The removal of this ex-quota provision in 2012 has impacted on the delivery of guidance counselling and schools now have greater autonomy in the allocation of resources and delivery of guidance services to pupils (ASTI, 2013; IGC, 2013). It has also resulted in professionally qualified guidance counsellors carrying out a dual role; guidance counselling and subject teaching (DES, 2012; IGC, 2013; NCGE, 2013). In Budget 2016 a partial reversal of the allocation was announced for autumn 2016...

Achieving a reuse perspective within a component recovery process: an industrial scale case study
(2005)

Abstract:
Identifying elements of existing software that are reused within a system may provide maintainers with valuable insights during system evolution. This paper evaluates an extension of software reconnaissance that can be used to analyse reuse across features in a system, as part of a component recovery process proposed in [18]. We illustrate and evaluate retrieval of reuse information in this fashion using a large, commercial ERP and warehousing application. Results suggest that the approach scales well in terms of reuse information across features in existing software, providing maintainers with a valuable new perspective on the software system in question.

Abstract:
Family Businesses are the backbone of Irish SME's. It is important for scholars to understand why some firms can transfer across generations and others do not. Is it by choice or by design? This study develops two longitudinal case studies of two 3rd generation Irish family firms and looks at the strategies employed by them to reach their 3rd generation.

Abstract:
The concept of usability has evolved in different research communities and the focus of research has varied. During the last couple of years, research has been oriented towards acknowledging more appropriately the social context of IT system use. The purpose of this paper is to investigate further the usefulness of a communicative perspective on user interfaces, as a means to understand the IT artefact as part of social and organizational context. Such a perspective seems to be important to promote designs that are both use-able and act-able.

Between Two Places : Emigrant Integration and Identity: A Case Study of Irish-born People Living in England
(2013)
Winston, Nessa
Abstract:
Despite net in-migration to Ireland in the last years of the twentieth century, large numbers of Irish people continued to leave the country on an annual basis (29,000 is the estimate for 1999). Their primary destination was England where, according to the last British Census (1991), the Irish are the largest ethnic minority in England. This report reveals the findings of a case study of Irish emigrants living in England, drawing on data from a variety of sources including the British census, surveys, focus groups and interviews with employees of Irish agencies in England. The research was conducted by Dr. Nessa Winston of the Department of Social Policy and Social Work, University College Dublin for the Irish National Committee of the European Cultural Foundation.

Abstract:
Blooming Clothing was established in 1985 by O’Byrne and two other partners. The aim was to specialise in a niche of the women’s outerwear market: maternity wear. The company started business with a retail outlet in Dublin and sold maternity wear under the Blooming label, which it outsourced through local suppliers. When this arrangement proved unsatisfactory, Blooming turned to manufacturing its own lines.

Capacity Rationalisation and Exit Barriers in the Irish Printing Industry
(2011)
Hughes, Kathleen
Abstract:
Decisions regarding capacity and capital investment are among the most critical for firms, as reflected in the extensive literature devoted to this subject. However, substantially less work has been carried out on the decision to disinvest. This is unfortunate as in some situations, such as recessionary times, the main competitive moves pertain to disinvestment, rather than investment. This study aims to contribute to this subject, in particular it aims to identify why industries with a concentrated structure can when proactively rationalise when required, while fragmented ones cannot. Research methodology a case study approach, comprising in-depth interviews with six industry experts from the Irish printing industry. This aimed to explore the reasons for the excess capacity in this industry, the impediments to rationalising, and to explore whether any potential solutions to the capacity issues in the industry could be identified. The findings support the theoretical models of a mat...
